Hello! I am a novice/hobbyist bookbinder; currently I'm making sketchbooks, but eventually I'd like to bind some fanfic so I can have a hard copy! Your work is awesome! 2 questions: how do you trim your text blocks? (If it's a guillotine, do you have a recommendation?) And do you have any links to tutorials for how to do the k118 binding? I looked up the binding on google and ended up here, hence my asking! (Yeah that's more like 3 questions but oh well! Thanks!)
Ahhh, yes! I do use a guillotine. My model is vevor, but that actual listing is gone now. It's pretty close to this amazon model, it's definitely more POWERFUL than the simple lever ones you sometimes see in craft spaces. Mine handles up to 500ish pages without trouble, and past that, I've tried chisel trimming (without the right press to hold it, i got a bloody outcome and a mangled book) and using a handheld orbital sander (slow and VERY messy, but works)
I do not have a better tutorial for k118 at hand, apologies. I went from the descriptions of the construction that you can find at the top of search results, then used the tightbacked leather covering methods discussed by das bookbinding in his videos. I'm hoping to maybe make a tutorial of some kind soon, because it always makes me sad when I can't answer yes to this question, so one may be forthcoming!
However, especially if you're new to bookbinding, I'd definitely recommend other styles like casebinding or coptic binding first, and getting comfortable with how leather handles on something like a bog-standard case before trying a tightbacked style. I didnt, my first attempts at leatherwork weren't k118, but tightbacked binding with laced on boards, and the learning curve was BRUTAL, it was the closest I've gotten to being completely discouraged away from a bookbinding skill. Whether or not you do a leather k118, you're going to be wrapping a a sheet of material where one side is covered in paste around a three dimensional object, manipulating it to do the turn-ins, and trying not to get adhesive on the pretty side of the covering material
Tumblr media
It's the easiest tightbacked style I've tried so far and i love it! I think it is very attainable. I just also don't want people to get discouraged away from the hobby because this particular style was too hard to figure out. I think it's a little reductive to say 'people shouldn't try this style until they can understand it from the vague descriptions,' which is why I want to write a tutorial, but I also think it's important to level up some other skills first before tackling this one!

I find it so funny that every time they get taken captive kirk is rattling his chains screaming "LET ME OUT" and spock is examining the shackles like "hm. interesting. did you know these are made of a very rare, indestructible metal found underground?"

You don't see them very often - they're native to YouTube comment sections - but some of my favorite Tumblr users are the people who're *really nerdy* about some media, but don't have much experience engaging with other people in fandom, so they'll mosey into the replies/reblogs of Spirk fanart or whatever to earnestly explain that
"Actually, Kirk and Spock aren't in a romantic or sexual relationship in Star Trek. In TOS S3e14, Kirk describes Spock as his 'brother', and Spock describes Kirk as his 'friend' in TWOK. In fact, in the novelization of TMP, Gene Roddenberry explicitly states, through Kirk, that Kirk and Spock aren't romantically or sexually involved even though they're t'hy'la, which is Vulcan for 'friend, brother, or lover', in a footnote. Even though Kirk dies single in Generations, Spock eventually marries Saavik according to beta canon, and this is confirmed in TNG S3e23 when Picard says he 'went to [Sarek's] son's wedding'. He couldn't be describing Sybok's wedding because Sybok died in 2287, and Picard was born in 2305. Furthermore, Spock couldn't have married Kirk because Kirk died at 65 and was born in 2233. You are a very talented artist."

I like posting these wips but I usually just forget to take pictures of the process until it's too late...
Btw this is one of my 'cleanest' sketches. Usually they are more chaotic and/or ambiguous

I know not all Jewish people keep Kosher, but the fact that they decided to have Spock eat bacon of all things to show that he's no longer participating in Vulcan vegetarianism is such a baffling choice

someone said “kirk sucks and spock deserves better” implying that spones is the “better” relationship for spock
i’m sorry what? like ship what you want but literally every chance he gets (whenever kirks gone lol) bones is calling spock names and making fun of his lack of emotions while also undermining his authority
and other people in the replies were actually explaining their reasoning, (for shipping spones over spirk) like how the relationship development is more interesting than spirk (valid) or how they like the dynamic better (i don’t but also valid)
so like, yeah it’s a show and obviously it doesn’t actually matter what you ship but personally i very much disagree with the idea that bones is what spock deserves or that it would be a healthier relationship like that person was trying to imply

also not to be dramatic but spock and the kneeling and the implications of that specific pose with people who were not his betrothed
but also spock and the kneeling in front of reader, and there's no particular urgency for the mind meld like there was with la'an and christopher but maybe spock asked a question that reader's been trying to answer and he suggested a mind meld because he wasn't really understanding and just
the implications of it all
"Mind meld? Is that that thing where you put your fingers on my face?"
"It is far more complex than that, but yes. In essence, I...Put my fingers on your face. In doing so, I--"
"Okay. Okay, fine."
Spock starts raising his hand and Reader stops him like, "When's the last time you washed your hands?"
"I assure you, they are clean."
"Fine. Fine. Going to have to exfoliate later but fine."
Spock begins to reach out again, but--
"Do you have to do it from there?"
"Pardon me?"
"The--kneeling, is that--"
"This is posture is conducive to a mind meld."
"Okay."
Spock begins to reach out yet again, then stops himself.
"You seem tense and apprehensive."
"Pff, what? No, what? No."
"Your attempts at deflection are far more telling than you may believe."
"Please just put your hand on my face."
"I'm beginning to find your oversimplification insultingly dismissive."

Hello! I've been thinking about binding some danmei novels in my native language, but I don't know where to start. I found your blog recently and find it very inspiring! I was wondering if maybe you could share with me what tools and materials would be good to get started with?
Sure!!!! So, I'm on mobile and don't have links at hand, but if you go back through my bookbinding tag, there are other replies I've got about the materials for making a book specifically. The renegade publishing blog also has resource documents that walk through the bookbinding process and include links to educational materials, etc. So for here, I'll focus on the danmei side of things!
So, a fun feature about these books is that they tend to run LONG. I've seen a number of people try to take up bookbinding in google docs, and honestly, it's doing things on hard mode. For many danmei, it's basically impossible. I think my EARLIEST earliest attempt at svsss began in gdocs, and that's not a super long novel, but gdocs was choking on it. A word processor on your desktop is going to be your best bet. Personally, i invested in a microsoft office license, because it was familiar and i could afford it. But the free parallel to that will be libre office, which does basically everything word can do, with just minor differences.
On the fancy end of bookbinding software, affinity, indesign, and microsoft publisher are also names you may hear tossed around. These can do fancier, more artistic layouts, but also come with a heavier price tag. And because i had webnovels on my radar from the start, i wanted something ROBUST. I wanted to be able to dump all of the husky and his white cat shizun into a single file and work from it. And i did eventually do that! Being able to typeset a single file rather than repeat each step across several is great, especially since i tend to tweak design choices as i go.
For danmei, you're also going to want a robust printer. I have a color laser that's been an absolute beast of a machine, but a black and white laser can get you a long ways, and monochrome designs can be very elegant. You don't want an HP brand printer, their toner subscription practices are downright predatory, but Brother and Canon are names I've seen recommended highly. You probably don't want an inkjet printer, because long books take a LOT of ink. The one exception would be if you can find an affordable ink tank printer.
And the last major thing i can think of is that if your main computer is a laptop, consider typesetting with an external mouse and keyboard! Danmei novels are split into lots of short chapters, frequently split across just as many web pages, with lots of footnotes to format, and laptops are convenient but not ergonomic. Doing too much on there is just asking for a repetitive strain injury. I've done it, but often paid for my sins in pain! And your laptop keyboard may start complaining too, I'm almost certain my first typeset of mdzs was the nail in the coffin for my last laptop's keyboard, haha
I hope that helps! Best of luck to you! Ive found binding cnovels to be EXTREMELY rewarding, even though my original reason was because these things would NEVER be licensed in english 😂 I'm delighted to see people experimenting with it for other translations in other languages, I really hope it goes well for you!!!!

@deansapplepie “Hey! I was reading it and I wondered when we’re going to have a part 3. I loved it”
I’m glad you liked it! I’m not sure when I’ll be able to post part three due to personal reasons. I’ve had so much on my plate lately and I’ve been I’ll. I’m sorry to disappoint! Hopefully I will be able to soon!
