Pentiment's Complete Bibliography, with links to some hard-to-find items:
I've seen some people post screenshots of the game's bibliography, but I hadn't found a plain text version (which would be much easier to work from), so I put together a complete typed version - citation style irregularities included lol. I checked through the full list and found that only four of the forty sources can't be found easily through a search engine. One has no English translation and I'm not even close to fluent enough in German to be able to actually translate an academic article, so I can't help there. For the other three (a museum exhibit book, a master's thesis, and portions of a primary source that has not been entirely translated into English), I tracked down links to them, which are included with their entries on the list.
If you want to read one of the journal articles but can't access it due to paywalls, try out 12ft.io or the unpaywall browser extension (works on Firefox and most chromium browsers). If there's something you have interest in reading but can't track down, let me know, and I can try to help! I'm pretty good at finding things lmao
Okay, happy reading, love you bye

How big is a sperm whale?
Tumblr media
There are many ways to find out their size.
For example, diving with them and using a really long meter (not recommended, it can be really hard!).
In a more scientific way, you can actually measure stranded animals. This is a highly precise method. Unfortunately, stranding events can happen. On the 20th of September, 14 individuals stranded on King Island, near Australia. Necroscopies and many analyses will be conducted.
With living animals, other cool stuff can be done. Have you ever thought that you can measure them from photographs? Well, you can do it! It's called photogrammetry and it's a matter of comparison between the animal and a predefined measure, usually the distance between two lasers.
And there's a truly amazing methodology that you probably don't know: measuring them from their clicks! Indeed sperm whale's produce a large variety of sounds, including clicks. These are really short sounds, broadband (in frequency) and highly intese (currently, the most intense! They can almost kill a human, but no such events have been reported). They can produce these sounds thanks to a complex, unique to this species, nasal apparatus (consisting also of the spermaceti organ). You can see a representation in the second picture (Caruso et al., 2015). Amazing right? Dotted lines represent the way this sounds travel through the organ. All this complex mechanism leads to the emission of the sound infront of their head, consisting of different pulses due to the sound reflection in the air sacs. Actually, the time distance (delay) between two subsequent pulses can be related to the size of the spermaceti organ, so of the head and finally of the lenght of the animal. Isn't it so cool? So, just recording their sounds, when they echolocate (when they are searching for food) or when they socialize, can give us the opportunity to measure them.
This incredible discovery come from 1972 with Norris and Harvey. In all these years it developed incredibly, with new discoveries, new approaches (like automated ones, so helpful!) and many publications.
This was the core part of what I did for my Master thesis, with data collected in São Miguel Island, Azores. And also thanks to this work, now I am an intern at the Marine Bioacoustics Lab in Aarhus University, under the supervision of one of the greatest names in Bioacoustics and sperm whales' research.
Life can be really unexpected, right?

19, 28, and 40 for the weird questions
thanks for the ask Ria! From this post.
19. Tell me a story about your writing journey. When did you start? Why did you start? Were there bumps along the way? Where are you now and where are you going?
according to my mom, I started writing '2 days after birth''. It's kinda just something I've always done? I was always a quiet kid, always telling stories to myself, writing but rarely sharing. I honestly can't remember a specific time in my life where I wasn't telling myself stories. As for bumps, there's been many. I've suffered from severe depression for over half my life (jfc I'm only 25...) so there have been very long gaps where nothing really got done. I would still tell stories in my head, but I couldn't write them down in any form. I never finished anything I started, and would go through fits of self-loathing that resulted in deleting entire years' worth of work. But, after getting an ADHD diagnosis and some dedicated self-improvement, I got a lot better. I managed to start actually write things down, to save them (sometimes in triplicate), and started thinking of what I could do with a project once I finished it. I can directly track the genesis of Shapeshifter to me getting on medication. Like, almost to the month.
Right now, I'm pretty damn happy with myself as a writer. I've still got places to improve, and I'm never gonna stop trying to improve, but I don't hate anything I write. I've started sharing my writing with others, even hazarding to share the rough drafts with trusted friends, and making friends who I feel comfortable sharing ideas with. What I want to do eventually is to finish Shapeshifter's first draft, share it around, and decide if it's worth it to subject myself to the publishing landscape. After that.... well, there's a whole world in Shapeshifter to explore, another one in War Witch. Who knows what I could do?
28. Who is the most delightful character you’ve ever written? Why?
Ok, so this is going to be a very deep cut, insider-knowledge answer, but I'd have to say Kerr McKay. Nobody who follows me knows who he is, I know :P Truth be told, I've been obsessed with Kerr since the moment he popped into my brain. I was just getting on my meds, still very much trying to dredge myself from the extreme depression I'd lived in for the last few years, and suddenly I had this bright, boisterous little dude hanging out in my head telling my all about the ridiculous exploits he wanted to get up to. I know that writing a Kerr-centric scene will almost always turn my mood for the better. He's just that kind of character.
40. Please share a poem with me, I need it.
"She is hiding in the shadows,
very, very dear,
fondly, fondly near;
But her light step on the threshold
never passes o'er,
and her sweet voice thrills the silence
never, never more.
Midnight, deeper than the midnight
of her wondrous hair,
hides her features fair,
seals for aye the trembling fringes
of her glorious eyes;
Granting me a clearer vision
born of tears and sighs."

Melbourne Video Game Cult(ure)
In an article titled "The Melbourne indie game scenes: Value regimes in localized game development" by Brendan Keogh, the author examines video game culture and discusses how value is constructed within the (indie) gaming community in Melbourne, Australia (Keogh 2021). The author analyses the cultural and economic factors that influence how value is defined in the indie game scene, including; social and cultural significance of games— as well as the financial gain that they can bring (Keogh 2021).
This text defines an 'indie game' as a video game created independently by small teams or individual developers, rather than traditionally being backed by large game development companies that prioritise financial gain over playable experience (Keogh 2021). These are now the broader differences between indie and commercialised games. According to Keogh (2021), this is a non-homogenous way of describing a video game maker, which encompasses a range of different identities, ambitions, aesthetics and themes that may not be as profitable in the eyes of these large corporations.
Indie games appear to value a consumer's experience and overall creativity over "economic pursuit" (Keogh 2021, p. 220), which I believe is what makes a game stand out and stay with a consumer. This idea often leads to customer loyalty (i.e. repeat customers) for upcoming releases. Large brand corporations will generally achieve success for well-marketed game releases due to a larger budget, however, it does not always receive praise, especially when it's clear that money was the motivating factor. Similarly to this idea, large corporations may not rely as heavily on good storytelling when they have huge budgets and great artwork to hide behind, and in many cases, this will be enough for the average consumer— yet when it comes to indie games they need to excel at great storytelling and unique graphics to stand out and perform (MacDonald 2021).
'Game Development as Cultural Industry' by Aphra Kerr (2006) looks at the relationship between game development and broad cultural and economic factors, and discusses potential tension that can arise when cultural and artistic values clash with mentioned market-driven imperatives. This demonstrates the divide between financial success and creative freedom that developers at times will have to choose between, as it is difficult to cater to both in the current climate. However, it is interesting to note that the most popular game in the world, Minecraft, was actually independently developed and has sold 238 million copies since its release in 2011 (Parker 2023). This goes to show that prioritizing player experience and creativity can lead to commercial success. In an environment where big companies with large budgets tend to dominate the market, it is refreshing to see that an independent game with a focus on quality and innovation can still come out on top.

Sexual health
As a part of the vulnerable population, homeless women are exposed to challenges around the integrity of their bodies and health (Barbosa, N. G., 2022). Sex/intercourse is a natural part of most living things life whether it be for the purposes of reproducing or pleasure. People experiencing homelessness share the same desires but this can get particularly dangerous if safe sex practices are not maintained. Young adults of the homeless population tend to engage in sexual activies earlier in life, have multiple partners, and have unprotected sex due to many reasons (Adedze, M., 2022). This opens up numerous opportunities for them to be at risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections (STIs). In fact, homeless people have an increased risk of contracting STIs (Stockwell, S., 2015). These bodily infections can be very harmful, especially to women. Bacterial infections such as gonorrhea and syphilis can increase the risk of acquiring HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) which is a virus that attacks the body's immune system. In the homeless population, HIV is a major cause of morbidity & mortality (Marshall, B. D., 2016). HPV (human papillomavirus) can cause genital warts and/or cervical cancer (CDC). Some more examples include genital herpes, chlamydia, bacterial vaginosis, and hepatitis. For a population whose priorities do not include visiting the doctor's office to receive routine check-ups and medications, contracting such STIs can lead them to live very uncomfortable/painful lives while the infection causes detrimental harm to their bodies. For example, lots of STIs can also lead to infertility later in life as well (CDC). While sex may be a voluntary and pleasurable act for many, a lot of the times, living on the streets can push people to trade sex for shelter or survival (Adedze, M., 2022). This unfortunate scenario can result in individuals having to live with a physical illness for the rest of their lives.  Attached below is an infographic from the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) which shows the rates of chlamydia, gonorrhea & syphilis infections in Canada. You may also click the image to visit the website. To learn more about STIs, link the CDC link below.
