Righto party people, we had a good run, we got a beautiful S1 of OFMD unmarred by bullshit, which was the first time a lot of us had seen queer rep in that way. It meant a lot, it's been my hyperfixation for a couple years at this point! I even met Rhys, Vico, and Samson this weekend gone, which was unfortunately a bit soured by everything going on.
It boils down to this: how can I enjoy a show with themes of anti-colonialism and rising up against oppressive powers, knowing one of the biggest people behind its creation, Taika Waititi, is himself in signing letters in support of Israel as they occupy and mass slaughter Palestinians. The whole thing smacks of hypocrisy. As someone in the UK, I couldn't watch this recent season in a way that financially supported it anyway. But it's about more than that. I don't know how fans can continue to comfortably engage with it.
We had widespread abandonment and condemnation of JKR in queer circles after her TERF bullshit, and yes it took a while to catch on and for people to realise the smear campaign against an entire group of people wasn't worth them holding onto that piece of media. It's hard letting go of something that means so much. Or is it? I personally was never a huge HP fan, so I didn't share that struggle. But here? With OFMD? Yeah it's safe to say this show has been my life for a couple years. I'm heartbroken this is going down the way it has, and I don't mean that to have anything to do with the quality of the media in S2. It's not a relevant factor when its creator starring actor and co-creator is ADVOCATING GENOCIDE*. If that doesn't put you off, I don't really have more to say.
My conclusion? It's not hard to let go, you just don't think it's important.
I think, unless there is significant backtracking and work done to undo this damage, and even then probs not, this will be my last OFMD post.
Fuck you Taika, you betrayed your fans, but you also betrayed yourself by forgetting the things you used to stand for. Eat shit.
*some people have pointed out that pro-Israeli support is not inherently advocating genocide, because Taika may be ignorant to what's really going on. This is possible, however, firstly, if you don't fully understand something, don't fucking advocate for it. Secondly, intentional or not, he has contributed to a pro-genocidal rhetoric, by signing a letter that one-sidedly condemned Hamas taking hostages without awareness that Israel has taken far more, and for someone in his position of influence, that amounts to the same impact. Obscuring nuance pushes a biased narrative. It's insidious and easily denied.

Actually, I am a big fan of celebrities not being informed about stuff and being aware of that, and thus not commenting on things. Those are entertainment people and just some guys. Personally, I am tired of googling a celebrity name and their stance on things. I wish they never spoke outside of their lane.

Okay, I don't wanna reblog unsubstantiated claims. I visit Twitter once per blue moon and am not on any other social media, and have only seen accusations flying around rather than screenshotted evidence. So.
Does anyone more knowledgeable than me have Substantial Info regarding the whole 'Taika and Con are pro-Israel 'Zionists' (a word I am very wary of using as it ties into antisemitic conspiracy theories and can mean so very much), and this is specifically why Guz Khan got fired' thing?
I heard about it vaguely on Tumblr posts but all I can see people quoting as evidence is Taika signing That Letter (which.... yeah is pretty shitty) and Con following a journalist's Twitter who he later unfollowed (which... doesn't really mean anything?)
Guz absolutely should not have been fired for being pro-Palestine. But a post just showed up on my timeline claiming Taika specifically caused his firing and should face consequences. Am I missing More Evidence here? If so, please do let me know.
My disclaimer is: I believe actors shouldn't be pressured to have opinions on complex political issues, and it's kinda fucked up that we have them on a pedestal. But 'should Israel be committing genocide on innocent civilians?' is NOT in any way a complex issue. It's pretty fucking clear cut.
And obviously, it goes without saying that the opinions of various actors is hardly the biggest issue when looking at this whole horrific genocide. I'll keep loving the characters regardless of the actors' opinions, but I do wanna know if several actors are pro-Israel because.... firstly, I'm a firm believer in Not Stanning. And secondly, it makes me even less inclined to support Season 3 of OFMD, no matter what happens plot-wise.

So about Chris Hemsworth as “Blondbeard” Cloudy: Imagine Blondebeard trying to seduce Stede right in front of Ed
Me: I'm picturing Blondebeard being another pirate from Ed's past, but arrogant, handsome, successful, charismatic and charming, and him and Blackbeard have this rivalry where he low key bullys Ed: takes the center of any room he's in, ignores Ed, talks over him, says stupid ideas like they're clever and gets people to think he's fantastic when really he's like--
Me: omfg, I need Chris Hemsworth to be Ed's Captain Hammer
So now I present to you:
Blondebeard: the Captain Hammer of OFMD
And he never sees or acknowledges that Ed's this successful pirate, always condescends to him. Blondebeard is to Ed like Terry's brother is to Terry in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, a cross between that and Captain Hammer. So imagine this asshole, that everyone generally loves but who has never been nice to Ed, from Ed's past, swans in and starts flirting with Stede. In season 2, BEFORE Ed and Stede have reconciled. Stede may be there but Ed is still upset, hasn't decided if he can forgive him or move forward, let alone if he will take him back or give him another chance. So Stede is there to prove himself to Ed, basically. Then: enter Blondebeard. Flirting with Stede, immediately, and being so charming and so winning (Ed thinks) that Ed's immediately jealous, and he hadn't even decided if he still wanted Stede! But he can't stand for Blondie to win him over. And then Blondebeard privately is pissing on Ed's shoes (metaphorically) about it. "Oh, did you like that little blonde man? I thought you weren't interested, that he was fair game and all that. My he looks delicious." Ed: this isn't fair, you always do this! You swan in and spot whatever it is I want most and they you get it first! and you don't even want it! You just get it so I can't have it! And then you leave them in ruins and you’re going to do it again! (I'm paraphrasing, Ed would never say it like that.)
But the whole thing is an abject lesson for Ed to realize what Stede means to him and then act on it.

disappointed but not surprised..... I know we all love taika waititi here but he's coming out with a new show called time bandits based on a 1981 film. the film has a main cast of little people and was super important as far as representation goes. and the new one doesn't have a single little person in the cast list. so when it comes out please don't go flock to watch and support it just because he's directing/co-writing it
here's the article abt the new cast
here's a tiktok from the granddaughter of one of the main actors in the 1981 film talking about how disappointing this is and bringing light to the issue

Taika/Rhys — Over the years
I just can't get that interview comment of Rhys' out of my head, "Taika never changes, despite how huge he is now." I'd like to see a fic set around that, the good and bad of it.
