Something Sweet

If you told Panthera from the first day that she met Miles Gonzalo Morales that he was the needy type of boyfriend, she would've called you a dirty liar to your face. The boy was antisocial as they came and looked like he would break out in hives if someone even hinted at getting too close to him (that wasn't his family, of course).

But nope. 

As they became friends, she found that Miles welcomed her hugs and touch. When they finally got together (to the joy of Aaron and Rio), the boy forgot the meaning of personal space. 

Don't get it twisted; Miles knew there was a time and a place for everything, and he didn't like many people in his business like that anyway. But... that doesn't mean he's not ready to pounce on his girlfriend when they finally have a bit more privacy. And Panthera was by no means a frosty lover. She doted and babied the Afro-Latino.

Kissing, hugging, and taking care of her man. And Miles loved it.

...though maybe a bit too much. Panthera unknowingly created a whiny, needy, and clingy monster.

And that fact became a daily reminder for her almost every time she and Miles were together. 

Today, they decided to walk around the safer parts of Brooklyn as a little impromptu date. It was during the summer, so the couple had ample free time together. They had stopped by a corner store for some snacks, seeing how Panthera would be having dinner at the Morales residence later that evening. The girl had been in the mood for something cookie and cream-related and was delighted to find some Pocky sticks in the flavor she wanted. With some chips, a bit of chocolate, candy, and some drinks, Miles paid for their items, and they went to the park. After finding a clean bench, Miles sat down, pulling his girl into his lap. In the early stages of their relationship, Panthera would've put up a fight by trying to sit next to her boyfriend and not on him, but Miles proved to be very stubborn.

Now, she goes willingly, allowing the boy to curl around her and nuzzle her neck and shoulder.

The pair shared earbuds as they listened to music on Miles' phone. The young couple were listening to a shared playlist filled with love songs or songs that filled them with good vibes.

"i'm yours" by Isabel LaRosa echoed in Miles' head as he stared at his girlfriend. 

This wasn't something uncommon for the boy to do. He couldn't help the fact that he had a literal angel for a girlfriend. Everything about her was just so pretty.

Her dark complexion that was nicely complemented by her dark blue camo dress. Her lovely long sunbleached locs, mostly tamed under a gray and blue silk beanie. The sound of her voice humming along to the beautifully haunting voice of the artist. Those gorgeous dark brown eyes lit up as she eagerly opened her box of Pocky sticks. Her glossy, plump lips wrapped around the treat-

Damn.

"Mami..." Panthera glanced over her shoulder at her boyfriend with a raised brow. She knew that tone. The "you've been ignoring me for too long, and I want some of your attention" tone. The girl finished chewing on the candy before addressing her lovesick boyfriend.

"Yes, Mi?" Miles wrapped his arms around his girl.

"Can I get one," he asked sweetly, leaning in close. Panthera stared back at him with an unimpressed glare. There were very rare occasions when the girl wasn't in the mood to share her favorite snacks, especially if she hadn't had them in a long time. This was one of those occasions, plus she knew that Miles was just using her snack as an excuse to get her attention.

She will not be fooled by those puppy dog eyes that made him even more cuter than he already was-

'Focus, Panthera.'

"C'mon, please," he whined, pouting a little. Panthera took out another stick, slipping it between her lips, staring pointedly at the Afro-Latino. Before she could turn away, Miles pulled her flush against his chest.

"Don't be mean, mami... lemme get a taste," Miles smirked, leaning in to take the remaining end of the stick that poked out of the stunned girl's mouth. With a soft kiss to her lips, Miles bit down on the treat before pulling away with a satisfied grin.

"Sweet, just like you," he said as he licked his lips. He could taste the cookies and cream from the candy and the blackberry flavor of Panthera's gloss. Panthera blushed, trying to brush off his sudden move with an eye roll.

"You had enough, Mi? So I can go back to my snack," she asked. Miles chuckled, leaning in for another kiss.

"I could never get enough of you, mi dulce gatita. And I think it tastes better if you share, don't you think?" Panthera felt her initial annoyance wane as she felt her boyfriend's plush lips against hers. 

She created a lovesick fiend... and part of her can't be mad or annoyed at this.

She thought it was kinda sweet.

What's left of the Steven Universe/Song of the Sea AU and a Transformers dream. Those are always so fun and this one had a really interesting story, I'll put it under the cut for those who want a good read.

Oh, I'm sad!

I was an Autobot for a change and we were going to storm the Decepticon base, which was an entire city. During the charge, I remember feeling great pride as Optimus Prime led us into battle. I switched to my alt mode and snuck deeper into the fray. I looked down from a vent a saw Starscream talking to someone (one of the waves I think...?) Something, something, lost thing, meeting at this place and time.

 I snuck back out and ran excitedly back to the Autobot camp to report my findings. I find Perceptor in a clearing (it was odd, our camp was natural and forest-y and the con's base was dark and metal) and I pounce on him playfully(his personality was closer to G1 than other continuities). We talk for a while and I tell him I'm going back to the city to spy on the meeting. He gives me a nervous look and advises me against it but, psssh, I don't listen.

 I go back in and peer out of a vent again. The room is set up like a business meeting room- a large table in the middle with chairs surrounding it. It’s surprisingly organized, only a few arguments, insults, and tussles. I suddenly get yanked out of the duct by Starscream and thrown on to the floor (”look who decided to show up” I can still hear it) Knowing it would be death if I tried fighting my way out of this, I lower myself into a defensive crouch but keep my claws out. “Look! She thinks she an Autobot!” “They must have wiped her memory.” “You must be joking.”   I yell at them, they all are lying... I was created an Autobot and I was completely loyal to Optimus. The room breaks into laughter. Then Megatron asks me, “Then why do you think you look so different?” I honestly think about this, I’m darkly colored and my armor is pointed, giving me an offputting silhouette compared to my softer, brightly colored comrades. 

Things get fuzzy here on out. I’m talking to Shockwave next thing I know I’m getting my “training collar” put on (in my first ever drawing of Panthera, she was wearing a red spiked collar cause that makes characters look cool. I implemented the collar back into her TFP character. God, I really need to make a complete post on her stories.) Then I went into this crazed phase and ripped Perceptor’s eye out, resulting in his IDW look.

What is the one moment you imagine happening in great, cinematic detail in your muse's character development? The one that makes you want to draw something amazing, or write out in a heartrending plot? Drabble or explain it.

i literally OBSESS over the ever grande takeover.

i have always thought of doing a drabble for it, but lord, it would be so long, i have such little time and focus, and i would want it to be sheer perfection.the build up, the little details, the atmosphere, lord.normally just the right song will come on my spotify or on the radio and i’ll start frothing at the mouth thinking about it, and i swear to god ONE DAY i will write about it.

right now i feel like i am just… gathering up the different pieces of what i want to one day include.the chaos of ever grande as it is stormed, the plumes of fire and smoke rising up into the sky as atticus arrives astride the back of his noivern, sargon.the battle between steven and atticus dueling out the fate of hoenn and the champion’s throne while the rest of the elite are preoccupied with atticus’ forces and his admins, tigris and panthera.steven having to escape via skarmory as a last resort, and the aerial battle that ensues as atticus just flings his fuckin ass right out of the gaping hole in the throne room’s wall onto sargon’s back to take off after him.the vivid image of atticus returning to ever grande to the throne room, once chaotic and loud left eerily quiet and empty as he sits himself down upon the throne, marking the beginning of a new era in hoenn under his rule.just… Everything.i really don’t feel like my writing is ready for that level of Energy and Intensity™ that i yearn to capture as i see so perfectly in my mind’s eye, but, one day, one day.

I suddenly have his image of She ra and Catra's son being a dude named Panthera who dresses in all black, but is really a massive sarcastic dork who loves to sing, and dance and is voiced by Zach Ellison. He fights with multiple knives since he doesn't have claws, is secretly in love with Michelle and both his mom's and Glimmer low key ship the two of them together.

Douglas Gish (Friend): Douglas used to babysit Lillian when she was younger. She hasn’t had much personal contact with him after her teen years but they still work together from time to time on her harder cases. Lillian does not think they understand that she is trying to protect all supernaturals; especially since they almost had a vampire on trial sentenced.

Austin Semler (Ignores): Just like the Boaz twins, Austin has photoshopped or falsified photographic evidence of multiple of her clients; mostly humans.

Tristan Lawton (Dislikes): Lillian has no problem visiting the predominantly witches and warlocks hospital for medical emergencies but Tristan has proven himself incompetent time and time again. He has single handedly ruined a countless number of her assault cases by mishandling evidence while healing and did more harm to her son Flynn’s broken arm when Lillian brought him in.

Pets:

Gambit (Male Capybara): Lillian purchased Gambit after her kids begged and pleaded for a pet. After coming up with impressive PowerPoints and spreadsheets, Lillian and Steven could not deny them.

Rouge (Female Capybara): They purchased Rouge for Gambit after Gambit had reached mating age. Rouge is now pregnant and Lillian is unsure if their family could handle anywhere from 2 to 8 pups. Especially, since Steven has brought up possibly having new additions of their own.

The Last Days of the Big Cat Survivor

Last August, big-cat conservationist Alan Rabinowitz returned home to Mahopac, New York, from an 11-day expedition to Colombia’s remote Darien Gap. He was in the region, on the border with Panama, to survey the health of the forest, which had recently been targeted by miners, prospectors, and poachers—a development that threatened the area’s jaguars, the Americas’ largest feline. When I talked to Rabinowitz afterward, he sounded excited about the expedition, despite the many challenges.

“If we can help the government in Colombia, it sets a good example,” he told me. “Protecting the big cats will save the whole ecosystem from the top down. I realized early on in my career that the way to protect areas most expediently is to work with the sexiest, most charismatic large carnivores, which were the cats.”

    His enthusiasm, though, belied an underlying reality: Rabinowitz’s body was failing him, the result of an ongoing fight with chronic lymphocytic leukemia. In August, the 64-year-old scientist and conservationist succumbed in a Manhattan hospital room, leaving behind a wife and a teenage daughter and son. He also left behind a remarkable environmental legacy.

“Conservation has lost a dedicated, passionate, and powerful voice,” Jane Goodall wrote after his death. “On behalf of the big cats, especially the jaguars, thank you, Alan.”

  During his four-decade career, Rabinowitz was often called the Indiana Jones of wildlife conservation, having spent most of his adult life in the jungles of South and Central America, trekking across Myanmar and Mexico, risking snakebite, plane crashes, and violent drug cartels to protect the animals he loved. “In Thailand, I almost lost my foot when I stepped into a bamboo trap laid by poachers,” he told me last November while talking about his trips. “In Burma, we came across a shotgun trap leading to opium plantations.” It was a life of adventure and purpose that he had always dreamed about.

He traced that passion back to his childhood in Queens, New York. He’d suffered from a stutter so severe he could barely communicate. Instead, he hid in his bedroom closet and whispered to his pet turtles, lizards, and snakes. He saw himself as the guardian of those voiceless animals. When his father took him to the Bronx Zoo and he locked eyes with a jaguar, he knew what his life’s mission would be. “I wanted my life to be searching out all the wildest places on earth and getting them protected as much as possible,” he said.

The Most Adventurous Ways to Experience Colombia

After earning a Ph.D. in ecology from the University of Tennessee in 1981, Rabinowitz spent two years in the jungles of Belize. No one had successfully studied jaguars there, and he set out to determine just how many lived in the tiny Central American nation. In those early days, his bravado sometimes went too far. One of his Belizean trackers died after being bitten by a fer-de-lance. In 1984, Rabinowitz’s plane clipped a wing on the forest canopy and crashed. He smashed through the windshield, breaking his nose and suffering a subdural hematoma that caused debilitating headaches for years. His time in Belize nearly killed him, but it also opened his eyes to the right way to approach wildlife protection. An outsider barking orders wasn’t the answer.

  “People are part of the equation,” Rabinowitz told me. That meant an increasing willingness to take risks in the political realm, working with governments and (often corrupt) politicians.

In the 1990s, he directly lobbied Myanmar’s military junta to survey the country’s unexplored highlands, advised the despotic government as it established a protected park, and caught a lot of heat back home for doing so. “Most conservationists don’t do what I do,” he said. But like his mentor, George Schaller, the German godfather of modern field biology, Rabinowitz was no stranger to realpolitik.

“You don’t set up a reserve by yourself—you have to have government involvement, and to do that, you have to be a good politician,” says Schaller, who worked with Rabinowitz in Myanmar, Laos, and Thailand. “When you are a foreigner, there are always people who don’t like you, so you have to be extra sensitive. That’s the way Alan fought.”

It was in 1988 that Rabinowitz met Salisa Sathapanawath, a graduate student. They connected in Thailand while working with the Wildlife Conservation Society. Four years later, they married.

In 2001, Rabinowitz was diagnosed with the leukemia that would claim his life, and yet he never slowed down. In 2006, he teamed with billionaire businessman Thomas Kaplan to launch the conservation organization Panthera and began work on an uninterrupted jaguar corridor that would stretch 2 million square miles through 18 countries, from Mexico to Argentina. In typical Rabinowitz fashion, he mixed charm, grit, and boundless energy, convincing nearly every nation in the range to consent to the project. Rabinowitz envisioned the corridor as “a potentially hikeable stretch, like the Appalachian Trail,” an eco-tourism incentive for locals. His enthusiasm was contagious, even though he was well aware of the dangers of advocating for preserves in countries where foreigners had been specifically targeted.

“I’ve been doing this for 40 years, and conservation has changed,” he told me. “I always saw it as a battle. Now it’s a war zone. There were insurgents and drugs in the early days, but it didn’t feel as dangerous as it does now.”

  Rabinowitz kept fighting until the end. The Darien Gap trip was especially risky, because until the FARC guerrillas laid down their weapons, the zone was essentially lawless. It also served as an ad hoc preserve—an area so dangerous that no one would go into it. But in the wake of the peace accords, the area was opening up to outsiders, and the jaguars’ home was being threatened. Rabinowitz needed to know how many cats were left and how healthy their ecosystem was. He spent months in the jungle, collecting data that he could use to persuade the Colombian government to create a protected reserve.

The trip was typical Rabinowitz, dismissing his personal safety in an effort to help the big cats he loved. “These kinds of things are taking bigger tolls on me than they used to,” he told me afterward. “My immune system is compromised. I recover more slowly, and I feel it. That’s why the journey of the jaguar is so urgent. I don’t have the energy I’ve had. Passion is still there, but the energy isn’t.”

Rabinowitz had been accompanied on the trip by Howard Quigley, an executive director at Panthera who had worked with Rabinowitz since they studied together in the late 1970s. Quigley says that up to the end, Rabinowitz was doing what he loved, even knowing that he didn’t have long left.

“He could have been home more, but he chose to be away, because that was his passion,” says Quigley. “Next year, we were sup- posed to go to Mexico or the Amazon to have a jaguar ceremony with a shaman.”

Rabinowitz was Jewish but was fascinated with shamanism, and he hoped an ayahuasca purge would let him step into the skin of his spirit animal as he faced his twilight. Says Quigley, “He wanted to see like the jaguars.”
