1990 Phantom Fic Recs
Since the lovely @wheel-of-fish's stream of the 1990 TV production of POTO, I have been unable to stop thinking about Cherik and know there are countless others who likely feel the same.
Perhaps the only thing more tragic than the ending is the fact that there's so few 1990 fics! And among those tagged many of them take some character inspiration but don't really use the unique premise and setup and characters provided in the Y/K miniseries. So I've decided to compile this list of a few of my favourites! Enjoy!
what i would best like to see by queeenciri
A much gentler and happier picnic unmasking, where Christine reacts a little differently! I love the character work in this fic; the thoughts and emotions of the characters feel so real, and it really breaks down their motivations.
Together We Dream by Anonymous
This one is brand new and I'm in love with the prose and writing style of it! An extra conversation between Erik and Christine, one that could fit into canon or be a turning point. Christine reflects on some similarities between them, and it leads to this emotional conversation with angst and joy entwined gorgeously.
How Deep the Bullet Lies by oprhan__account
This is more of a hurt/comfort and whump fic, where Erik survives the ending of the miniseries. It's mainly him processing the events of the show and musing on what comes next, and does have a ending that is pointing towards things improving! Currently listed as chapter 1/? , but it's still worth reading as a fantastic exploration of an intriguing concept.
Sunflowers by CottagecoreCandlelight
Incredibly fluffy E/C, where Christine gifts Erik some sunflowers. Filled with the adorable shyness and sweetness that this couple has, and I'm in love with the visual image of 1990 Erik and his bouquet of sunflowers. They suit him very well!
Understatement by BrendaDaaeDestler
Erik takes Christine on their first date together! Fluff including a candlelit dinner and slow dancing. This is an AU where Gerard is willing to set up such a date, but the main focus is the budding romance between Erik and Christine.
A Magical World by pippa-writes
This is actually a collection of four ficlets! They're mostly canon compliant, and range from Christmas fluff to Christine regretting the picnic unmasking. The first one is even a Phillipe centric look at Christine's grief post canon (unfortunately with the canon ending), which I find quite unique and fascinating.
Rêver by trace-of-rouge
Somewhat tragic and angsty one shot, this is Erik musing on the nature of dreams and his feelings for Christine. It's a very good short character study, and I really enjoy the insight into Erik's thoughts.
The Strange Case of Monsieur Belladova by NPennyworth
If I constantly reread my own story then I'm allowed to put it on my own phic rec list, and I am seriously quite proud of how this one turned out! I wanted to explore a happier AU where Erik gets to just work at the opera house; this is written from the perspective of the opera company as they debate whether to say anything about the mask, but it seems rude to point it out when nobody else has. Mostly humor and fluff, with background E/C.

Leap Before You Think
My first DPxDC fic, which is still ongoing. I work really hard on self editing this one and I'm very proud of it. Twin shenanigans have a special place in my heart and I'm excited to share where the story is going.
Halves
I have SO many plans for where this DPxDC fic is going and I'm excited to write more for it. I'm currently working on editing another chappy for it, but my ADHD has been bad so I've also been jumping between a lot of projects.
Lightning
This was the first DP fic I wrote and posted, officially throwing myself into the Phandom. It's still not complete, but it can be read well as-is I think. I hope to come back and finish it sometime soon though.
Okay
Of the fics I wrote for Phic Phight this year, this was my favorite I managed. I'm just such a sucker for identity reveals (as a lot of these show), and good teacher Mr. Lancer.
Cold Hands
This one was incredibly self indulgent and it's one of my few completed fics that's more than one chapter. Sometimes you just gotta write a ship you like cuddling and sharing emotions.
I have more DPxDC and DP-only fics up on my AO3 profile, but I think these might be my faves :D

Phic Recs
Alright so my turn for the reveal phic recs thing *cracks knuckles* Reveal fics are my bread and butter (besides angst of course) so it was really hard to narrow it down. So I decided on phics that don’t get as much attention as others, given that they’re new or just not really paid any attention. Also I included five instead of three because that’s just extra
All It Takes Is A Sack of Flour by Sonic Squid
Summary: Casper High has its first ever all-boys lock in where Dash and Kwan decide to pull a little prank on Danny (no PP, One-Shot)
Why I Like It: In just a thousand words, this oneshot tells everything it needs to in the funniest way possible with good dialogue execution. Additionally, it’s not ridden with angst like most reveal phics are, and is generally lighthearted and silly - which is often scarce with these types of fics.
Shivers by JadeNoRyuu
Summary: When the Fenton parents went to investigate a strange phenomenon, unforeseen consequences began to stir a chain reaction that would lead to injuries, an odd medical issue (impossible for human standards) and the discovery of weird facts. Above all they're unable to call for help. What will they do?
Why I Like It: First off, the world-building and pacing in this phic is honestly just phenomenal. The plot slowly builds toward the reveal, as the Fenton parents gradually discover more and more information, leaving you anticipating every next moment. What I personally enjoy about this one is how it delves into the aftermath of the reveal, while most fics usually conclude after the reveal.
Summer Reveal by WritingDreamGirl
Summary: All was right in Danny's world. With Summer Vacation coming up, he and his friend's were finally going to get that vacation they so desperately deserved. But things take a slight detour when his mom tells him they can't afford the airfare. Her solution however, is the thing that really shocks him.
Why I Like It: Another short oneshot, this story leaves you wanting more yet is somehow still satisfying? This one really stands out to me since reveal fics are generally focused on drama while this oneshot does the opposite by presenting a casual scenario with just enough suspense to keep you hooked.
Third Time’s the Charm by Shadow Kat-Lyn
Summary: Danny knows he needs to tell his parents about Phantom, but he always backs out at the last second. A Danny/Maddie bonding fiction in four parts.
Why I Like It: Each part of this series just feels so natural whenever I reread it. It establishes the complicated tension in Danny and Maddie’s relationship in the first chapter, realistically straining it until everything eventually comes to light. Really wholesome read that you should check out if you’re a sucker for Danny/Maddie bonding, like me.
Unearthed by DarkNympha
Summary: In the stress of the events that followed the Accident, as Danny struggled to control his new-found ghost powers and as ghosts started attacking Amity Park, the trio completely forgot about the body that they had buried in the woods. Until someone found it.
Why I Like It: Alright, before I read this phic I was writing something very similar last Ectober, but this fic pulls it off much better than I would have. Suspenseful. Angsty. And a few awkward moments in between that at least made me laugh. It’s premise alone stands apart from most reveal fics, and the author’s fluid style contributes even more appeal.

Hey guys!
Fanfiction’s like, my favorite part of the Danny Phantom community. I love it so much, and I’ve read so many fanfictions over the years. Fanfictions I’ve stayed up all night reading, that made me cry and laugh and that inspired me so much. Checking my email every day for the message: That Fanfiction You’ve Been Reading has been updated. The sadness of an author retiring or the joy of finding stories of your rarepair.
On the writing side, fanfiction has helped me to grow so much as an author and storyteller, and I’ve gotten some of the best criticism that really molded me and helped shape my writing style. It’s allowed me to write as an emotional outlet during some of the best and worst times of my life, and writing has allowed me to meet, talk to and even occasionally write alongside some amazing people.
In the past year or so, I’ve been getting some fantastic fanfiction recommendations, and I’ve recommended a lot of fanfictions too. There’s just so many fanfics. So many ideas, so many concepts, so many AUs and headcanons and rewrites and personal interpretations and so many unique, creative sparks in this phandom that sees so much potential in this show. Despite it being so long since the show ended, there’s still new fanfictions every day. I love it.
I know it’s a bit late to announce, but for February, I’m proposing Fic Rec Fridays. Each Friday, recommend 3 DP fanfictions you feel is under-appreciated/not well known, tell us a bit about it (without giving away spoilers!) and what you love about them. Is it the narrative? Is the writing style to die for? Is it just an old, classic, cheesy piece that brings good memories, but people seemed to have forgotten? Does it have a story or premise you’ve never thought of before? Or is it just your old favorite?
I also highly encourage you to reach out to the authors of the stories you recommend to tell them what you told us: Why you love their work and why you’d recommend it.

Fic Rec Fridays
Day 1: Revelations
#1: Home Away by alwaysALOHA
Summary: “When Danny gets a personal heritage assignment for school, he learns some shocking things about his family that flip his world upside-down.”
I love this one so so much. It’s currently unfinished, but it’s a very unique take on an old phandom trope. There’re so many unexpected plot twists that are fluidly worked into the story; nothing seems out of place or rushed. The quality of writing is amazing, and I may or may not have binge read it more than once... Kinda stayed up way too late. Go read it.
#2: Just A Boy by Tay1019411
Summary: “Maddie and Jack finally have Phantom right where they always wanted him: in there lab, helpless, but everything is different now. Now, Maddie faces the truth about what Phantom really is.”
A great short story that takes the typical “Maddie and Jack capture Phantom” and lets undeniable humanity take the reins. Well-written, slow-burning, fluffy angst characterizes this fic best. I highly recommend the read.
#3: You Should Be Dead by SaphireDragon11
Summary: “Dash and Kwan are horrified to discover they've accidentally killed their classmate, but perhaps even more so when he shows up at school the next day. In the following uncontrollable events, Danny's well-preserved secret isn't the only thing at risk.”
Another longer fic, this one takes “horrifying revelation” to another level. Featuring limited immortality, looming threats, and lots of angst, “You Should Be Dead” caught me by surprise and never let me go. This was also one of the first fics I remember reading and truly realizing that fanfiction didn’t have to be corny or conventional. Definitely a must-read.
Honorable Mentions: The Uncanny Danny by Shaed Knightwing and Evanescent Signs by RedHeadsRock1010
I decided to call these “honorable mentions” because while not technically revelation stories, they both prominently feature Amity Park recognizing abnormalities in one Danny Fenton. Both of these are very enjoyable reads and were instant favorites of mine.

Each Friday, recommend 3 DP fanfictions you feel is under-appreciated/not well known, tell us a bit about it (without giving away spoilers!) and what you love about them.
Week 4: Crossover

I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS WEEK Y’ALL LET’S GO
1. Commence Flirt Mode by SweetPotato (Danny Phantom & American Dragon: Jake Long)
This guy is really nice, Jake decided, and cute, and kind of weird.
Why I Like This Fic
I have absolutely zero ideas how this became a thing, but here we are. It’s cute. It’s just so freaking cute! The whole story is Jake being a giant flirt after running into Danny during the fulfillment of a bet. This author did a very good job with Jake’s POV, including all his ridiculous slang, which is surprisingly hard to find a proper balance for, so I really appreciate that.
2. College Nerds by SweetPotato (Danny Phantom & American Dragon: Jake Long)
Jake’s friends force him into a blind date, and one of the best desions he ever made was going along with it.
Why I Like This Fic
SweetPotato steers this ship, y’all, and there’s a good reason for it. They’re excellent at maintaining character. And College Nerds is such a perfect title because Danny and Jake are such fucking dorks. It’s sweet and has 0 angst/annoying trope where a problem can be solved with a goddamn conversation and I appreciate that. It’s just 2 guys being losers together. Always a good time.
3. Spirited Away by CoronaIgnis (Danny Phantom & Harry Potter)
Verb, past tense. Meaning: "To be abducted by supernatural entities." In this case, those entities would be wizards, and their abductee is none other than the very annoyed Danny Fenton.
Why I Like This Fic
Y’all. Y’all. I fucking love this story. A++++ story. The writing, the characterization, the pacing, ALL FLAWLESS.
Danny develops a magical core as a side effect of being half ghost. He does not want to go to wizard school, but when a law is passed that requires him to go, it takes being literally kidnapped to get him to classes.
He does not take this laying down.
Meanwhile, the Golden Trio have their suspicions about the mysterious new transfer who repeatedly insists he doesn’t want to be there but still doesn’t leave.
Even without how incredible this entire story is, hands down, the thing I love most, NO ONE MAGICALLY KNOWS SHIT.
Y’all know those crossovers where the author’s like “Well I know Character A from Fandom A is trustworthy, so obviously Character B from Fandom B will have no problem with telling Character A all their secrets/backstory/hidden powers/etc.?” I FUCKING HATE THAT. THIS STORY DOESN’T DO THAT.
And not only with randomly trusting a total stranger, but with smaller details as well. (Minor Spoilers) During his initial escape attempt, Danny takes the staircases moving as a sign that the castle is actively working against him, not knowing that the stairs just do that. The Golden Trio are suspicious of how angry Danny is at being at Hogwarts, not knowing he was literally kidnapped and held prisoner.
They don’t automatically trust each other, and there are believable misunderstandings due to this.
If you don’t read a single story I’ve recommended all month, let yourself read this one.

Day 1: Revelations

ANYWAY, here’s my list @danphanwritingprompts ! I generally try to reccomend ones that haven’t been sent in yet, but I do still love them. I’m going to put them into two different categories. Enjoy!
Phantom Reveal
Pondus Omnium: The Weight of All Things by NoSignalBlueScreen
Summary: An evil only Clockwork could anticipate is coming. A huntress becomes an ally, a family is made whole, an imperfection is made perfect, a class takes a field trip, a city is enlightened, a man is redeemed, a monster is saved, alliances are formed, and a kingdom is forged. No PP/Phantom Planet. Post D-Stabilized. Reveal Story. DxS TxV & others.
Why do I love it? Not only is this a good revelation fic, but it’s also just in general, a good, slow take on the exploration of Danny and his friend’s lives when they’re older. They’re older, they’re more mature, and the escalation of events really fits that. Plus, there are a lot of little headcanons that you usually see flying around the phandom that are implemented so well here like the whole “Dann uses his ice powers to make little statues to practice” is here. Plot threads from the show are also solved. I could go on and on, especially since this fic is so long, but it’s real good. Real real good.
Not a Ghost by SerasenWind
Summary: "All ghosts are evil." This one fact is the basis of Maddie Fenton's life's work. But when an invisible presence begins keeping her company in the lab, how can she reconcile her core belief with her friendly little Phantom?
Why do I love it? This is such an adorable fic. Plus the revelation itself is just... quiet for lack of a better term. Not big, not shouty, just a realization as much of a reveal. Tbh this is more of a bonding fic than anything, which is even better. This is one of those fics that make me love the Fenton family more. Just good, nice, and sweet.
Road Trip by @emmagineif
First Line: “Tucker is currently sitting on more money than he’s ever seen in his entire life.”
Why do I love it? Firstly, Tucker POV!!! There’s not enough of those. I love this fic mostly for the set-up and dread of it. I always go back and read it thinking “Damn, they’re just kids and yet-”. I think about this one a lot when writing or thinking of any “Reveal gone wrong” scenerio. Plus the detail in this is stunning.
Personal/Non Phantom Related Revelations
The Cake and Cobbler Theory by Rookey
Summary: Who knew that a half-baked metaphor, some iced-to-perfection straight-A students, a sprinkle of basic yet uncomfortable questions, and a dash of lame baking puns were all it would take to explain Danny's very existence? But you know, that's just the way the cookie crumbles. Oneshot.
Why do I love it? It’s one of the best “Why Danny survived the accident fics” EVER. The science behind it is sound, the way it’s confronted is even better, and it’s all so fun and light hearted in a way that you wouldn’t expect in this type of fic. Plus the banter and interactions are so funny and adorable. This is one of my number one recced fics in general.

Summary: Danny accepts an offer from Vlad, and everything begins to unravel at the seems. They don't just send you to hell, they give you a tour of heaven first.
Why do I love it? This one really takes it’s time to wrench your heart out. It’s a bit long, but it’s soooo worth it. The Vlad and Danny interactions are great. Plus, again, you get so personally invested on what’s going on, only to get sucker punched. A+ would read and scream at my computer again.

Heroes Under Drinking Age: Alpha by kineticallyanywhere [Danny Phantom + Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja]
amity park gets a ghost infestation, and its residents move to norrisville. i don't know how to summarize it but it's really hecking good
(theres a side story to this fic with adjl and kim possible, although that one hasn't updated in a long while)
Why do i love it? there are a ton of fics out there about casper high getting destroyed and having to merge with another school, but this one does it so well? like...the characters are ic enough to be able to imagine it happening in canon, but with just enough headcanons mixed in to make it feel original; the pacing on it is right in the safe range between excruciatingly slow and extremely rushed; and there's so much hero bonding, man!! danny and randy just had a really cool dynamic and their heart-to-hearts were really wholesome...i love it
Doors by Elisabeth Hill [Danny Phantom + Coraline]
Coraline's mother gets a new job in Amity Park, causing the Joneses to move. Coraline isn't fazed when she learns that ghosts exist.
Why do i love it? im a hoe for rare danphan crossovers.....i love danny phantom, and i love coraline......of course im gonna love a fic with both in them. (plus tucker flirting with coraline was kind of somehow really cute??)

hogwarts hires a dragon and a ghost to protect hogwarts in a time of war...instead they get two dumbass teens
Why do i love it? hey dots..........did you know.........that your writing is really fucking good? the characters.....are so filled with fluff..........it is such a wholesome fic.......... plus, i dont think "danny gets hired as a protector of hogwarts" is a fic that was done before and i love original ideas

Summary: Long One-Shot Reveal Fic
Why: akshsjdbdl The characterization is Phenomenal and yeah I guess assuming from the Summary not many would notice it. But it’s semi popular with like 420 favorites (eeey) and an absolute gem that I love dearly. It’s in Jack Fenton’s POV and just— agh I love it go read it!

Important Fics I’ve Read This Year
Most of these are popular phandom phic recs but I held off on reading them for multiple reasons depending on what they were about, but either way they were a great experience for me to read.
Pits by Cordria (When I first joined the phandom I was overwhelmed by the angst with this one at first XD.)
Gravity & Other Unreliable Things by Represent (Slow read for me at first - it was only when I read it a year later that I realized that the pacing was like that to make the story flow better.)
A Snapping Sound by Represent (No flaws. One of my favorite fics in the phandom, honestly.)
In Due Time by Risayume (I am trash for Badger Cereal. If you are too, you’d love it. It was a bit hard for me to find because of filtering, but it definitely is a gem. IDT takes a spin on Vlad that I don’t see that often in other Vlad & Danny dynamic fics.)

His tongue feels like lead and he knows, even if he wants to, he can’t tell them. He can't. So instead, he doesn’t meet her eyes, takes one step back, and repeats, “I’m sorry.”
Sometimes, it feels like it’s the only word he can say these days.
Or: When Danny goes down to the lab and enters that portal at fourteen years old, he goes down alone. This changes things.

I gotta be real guys: I am both a very shippy man, and yet not at all. I rarely read PURELY ship phics, mostly just phics that have ships as a main subplot. But I still reached into the depths to find some stuff. As somebody who ships basically everything it feels like, I tried to get a bit of a variety in, and I’ll separate this by ship.

A rarepair phic featuring Danny and Star.
Why I love it? Rarepair!! WELL DONE rarepair!! It's such a beautiful story that just really gives Star some much needed characterization. It has very sweet and loving bonding between Danny and Star, which I feel the ship really deserved considering many of the ship phics I find of Star and Danny seem to be blackmail based. Which makes for good plot!! But LET THEM LOVE EACH OTHER!
Danny Phantom: Confessions of an A-Lister by Saberhawk
A rarepair phic that features Danny and Star as she picks him over popularity.
Why I love it? god give me the rarepairs man. It’s such a good phic that really explores Star as a character and includes her as being part of the main trio. Another rare example of a non-blackmail phic including them.

Gonna be real with you pham. I don’t remember much about the summary of this besides Star begins crushing on Danny.
Why I love it? Like I said, I honestly don’t remember much of it, but I remember the title always catching my eye and keeping an eye for it in my inbox. There was just always something about it that made me always remember it. It just had that something special that always left an impact in me, even though I don’t remember the details.

Why I love it? It's just a classic, cute little Danny/Sam piece. A oneshot that's just really simple and cute, has that really adoring charm to it.

Why I love it? It's just so charming. It's got such a darling spark in the way their relationship is talked about, and it has such good character building. The trio are older, and it captures how they've changed since senior year really well. Very underrated. I got the pleasure of beta-reading this, and I still really adore the passion and charm that went into it.

A phic that's actually based on a challenge I had proposed years ago! It's such amazing story of Danny and Tucker basically pimping out Phantom in a speed-dating thing.
Why I love it? Firstly, this person looked at my idea and went “YES, I want to write this”, and they took that idea and produced this amazingly well written masterpiece. It's got great pacing, and I really love the way the author portrayed a lot of students here, including how Danny deals with Paulina's crush and how Star feels about Danny. So good, so underrated.

Why I love it? This is another fanfiction where I had told people “hey pls do this” and this person went “hmm okay” and DID IT and it's SO GOOD. It's a sweet little oneshot that just has such adorable moments between Danny and Valerie. It's just good shit.

Why I love it? HNNNNNN IT'S JUST SO GOOD! A rarepair? With excellent storytelling? Just FUCK me up, pham. This is so well written and paced. It dives into Danny and Paulina's relationship in such a beautiful and realistic manner, deals with Danny's insecurities as to why Paulina likes him and has Paulina characterized as a person who encourages Danny to try new things and have more confidence in himself. It's such a wonderful portrayal and characterization of somebody (Paulina) who's just so often demonized and basically shit on in fanfics, that people use as a plot device. Paulina deserves better, and that's exactly what imekitty gives you in this.

Why I love it? Clutches chest. MY RAREPAIR MAN! A lovely set of fanfictions that just capture some adorable moments between my babies. So sweet, so good. The author is also just an absolute joy to talk to with so much love for this pairing, and you can really see that in the oneshots.

Why I love it? Honestly? It's just angsty as fuck. I'm not typically a big Dash/Danny fan, but there's just? Something? So charming and angsty about this? It doesn't end well, and it honestly kind of villainizes Sam, but I still love it. That factor to it has a bit of a cheese, but overall? I rarely like Dash/Danny. I'm not a big fan of the ship dynamic, but this one just GOT me man, hook line and sinker. It hurts so good.

Day 2: AU
#1: in a world of by @sapphireswimming
Summary: “Detention is boring.”
Unfortunately, I can’t say too much about this one without giving it away. It’s a short oneshot that I desperately wish were a full-fledged story, because it’s a unique, creative premise that deserves more. I’ve never seen this particular idea before and it’s really interesting to consider. Go give it some love.
#2: Desperado by Lightning Streak
Summary: “During the American Civil War, 19-year-old Sam runs away from home to become a hospital nurse. She stumbles across an injured soldier, and a twist of events lands them in the middle of dangerous conspiracies and ghostly encounters.”
This one may still be incomplete, but it’s one of my all-time favorite AUs purely for how creative it is. The story is captivating, action-packed, well thought out and very well written-- in fact, parts of it have been completely revamped, and it’s even more amazing than it already was. The lore explaining Danny’s powers is brilliantly worked into the setting of Civil War-era America. This is one of the more mature fics I’ve read; the author definitely holds nothing back in terms of what characters will do to achieve their goals. Trigger warnings may apply.
#3: A Fire Shall Be Woken by @sapphireswimming
Summary: “Dragon hunting rarely went according to plan.”
Okay. I love dragons. Add that to my love of Danny Phantom and you get one happy phan. This is another oneshot, but it’s long enough, so well written, and so full of action that every second is an exhilarating thrill. I feel this is probably one of the more underrated fics, mostly because not everyone likes dragons, but I guarantee it’s worth your time. There’s an interesting twist that I wish had a full explanation/full fic to satisfy my undying curiosity. Alas, we make do with what we are given :)
#4: inviso-doodles by attu
Summary: “What are friends for if not making you internet famous?”
This one could technically be considered as in-universe, but since the author calls it an “artist!Danny au” I’ll include it here. Personally I see Danny having artistic skill as being more of a headcanon, but I digress. This is a cute little story that centers around exactly what you might think it does: Danny is secretly a very good artist and Sam and Tucker take it upon themselves to make sure he gets the recognition he deserves. Just... it’s cute. Go read it.
#5: Frozen by DB-KT
Summary: “How Danny has an ice core in an AU way.”
This... This story is really incredible. A surprising amount of angst in such a small package. Again, if I say too much I’ll probably give it away, but it features Frostbite and some interesting headcanons that you definitely don’t want to miss out on. Definitely an underrated gem of a fic.

Phandom Phic Rec Friday!
Each Friday, recommend 3 DP fanfictions you feel is under-appreciated/not well known, tell us a bit about it (without giving away spoilers!) and what you love about them.
Week 1: Revelation
1. Little Fires by Represent
My family's supposed to be geniuses, yet they've never figured it out. Now I know why. Because they already know I'm Phantom. They must know. The better questions are: Have they known this whole time? What's in that vial? What happened to Skulker? And what's in the locked drawer?
Why I Like This Fic
Not technically a “revelation” fic, I suppose, since the Fentons already know, but revelations are made so I’m counting it.
This fic reminds you that the Fentons are geniuses. They’re played for laughs and I love that, but they are geniuses. It also reminds you that, though it is also played for laughs, they are absolutely ruthless when it comes to their research and discusses the ethical ramifications of such singlemindedness.
(Additionally, this story also gives a reason the Fentons decided to become ghost hunters in the first place. Ghosts weren’t really a problem until they made it one -- why decide to hunt something they couldn’t even definitively prove existed? Why build your life -- your children’s lives -- around the idea that you could shoot something you’d never seen? This story is why!)
2. Humans and Ghosts by RedHeadsRock1010
If there was one thing Danny Fenton perfected since receiving his powers, it was how to pretend.
Why I Like This Fic
Most revelation phics center around 1 of 2 things: the Fentons still hate Phantom or the Fentons still love Danny. This story doesn’t give any type of damn about that at all.
It’s a slow burn to the revelation -- the last chapter, actually, which is another refreshing switch up from “Fentons find out CH1, here’s a story of the consequences”. Instead, the story centers around Danny’s feelings and issues about living with people who have repeatedly talked about the horrible things they would do to his alter-ego, if only they could. It delves into the emotional ramifications of this and of being raised by people whose work so completely consumes their consciousness.
Further, it discusses what kind of scientists the Fentons are. Are they ethically sound? Are they intentionally malicious? Are they capable of correctly interpreting data that doesn’t match to their preconceived notions? Nope! And all of this is done without making them “mad scientists”. They love their children, and sometimes that makes it so much worse.
3. Shots Fired also by RedHeadsRock1010 because they do great work
School shooter, meet Danny Fenton. Vlad Masters does not get paid enough to deal with this.
Why I Like This Fic
Because the list needed some humor.
Yes, it handles a school shooting scenario, but don’t let that scare you off. No one, least of all the students, is taking the shooters seriously.
What do you get when you cross a basically unkillable pun master with a bunch of ruthless gunmen? This bullshit. It starts seriously, but steadily loses its grasp on that and then drops it completely, punting it off into the night. This quote, I feel best expresses the tone of this story;
"Students, please," Lancer whispered. "I know you all have zero concerns for your own lives after three years of living in this godforsaken town, but please understand the situation."
Dash sighed, shifting so his legs wouldn't fall asleep. "Dude, we know, but this kind of stuff just gets… what's the word? Boring?"
Plus, this story has one of my very favorite headcanons, but that gets into spoiler territory so you’ll have to read it to see.
