Finished this book on the plane. Enjoyed it immensely. An ambitious work, it covers everything from the natural history of whales, to whale-based literature & the lives of its writers, to species differences, to the history & geography of the whaling industry, to whale prey & parasite animals, to whale activism & politics. San Antonio Abad y san Pablo, primer ermitaño, de Diego Velázquez, 1634. 

“Las historias de estos monjes del desierto muestran lo mucho que nos hemos alejado hoy de los animales. Evocan una época en la que las bestias y los pájaros significaban algo más que carne o esclavos, puestos que representaban la inexplicable maravilla, pero también el temor de la creación. [...] El cuervo revolotea sobre estos mitos, pasando de creador y sustento a destructor, y luego otra vez a creador. No mucho después de que Pablo fuera enterrado en el desierto, un cuervo protegió los restos mortales de san Vicente de Zaragoza -que había sido asado en una parrilla- de los animales carroñeros. Más tarde, en el siglo VI, san Benito, el fundador de la célebre orden, fue salvado por un cuervo, que le arrebató de la mano un trozo de pan envenenado que el santo estaba a punto d llevarse a la boca.

Para los cristianos, el cuervo representaba el alma inmortal; algunos incluso veían en la negrura del pájaro un reflejo del brillo del sol, igual que los seguidores romanos de Mitras habían considerado a este pájaro como un mensajero solar.”
