Uh oh, it's sleepy grumpy Pika. Y'all know what that means, right?

It means I have no filter for my opinions.

If you're dissatisfied with the way Katsuki's bullying of Izuku is handled in MHA because you expected him to be confronted by someone else about it in some way, it's probably because you are unaware of the difference between bullying and attitudes towards it in Japan versus in your country of origin. I believe everyone would benefit from researching bullying in Japan. They do NOT view it the same way the west does, y'all.

And I guarantee when you learn about it, you're gonna find some stuff that makes you uncomfortable and horrified, because it's gonna take a while for you to get enough information to give context to a lot of the history and attitudes you'll find. AND EVEN THEN, EVEN WHEN YOU HAVE THAT CONTEXT, you're still definitely not going to like it.

However, with any luck, you'll see how MHA's portrayal of Katsuki's bullying is shockingly sympathetic and heartwarming to many people. It's because, from the perspective of a Japanese audience, Izuku was not targeted and bullied by Katsuki in the way we're used to seeing such situations portrayed in the west. Izuku was bullied by everyone. His classmates, his teachers, the pro heroes he encountered, and society in general ALL participated in the bullying of Izuku, because societal pressures to conform in Japan are MASSIVE, and that can often manifest as one form of bullying or another.

Katsuki's bullying is just the one that the story chooses to flesh out. It's the one that Horikoshi develops. Katsuki is the bully that changes his own perspective first and drastically, the one who realizes the greatness in Izuku and accepts that and comes to his side long before the rest of society can catch up. It is largely understood by the Japanese audience that Katsuki in middle school didn't seek Izuku out and follow him home every day to beat him up; Katsuki mostly ignored Izuku until Izuku would do something to remind Katsuki of his insecurities, and so he would lash out. And no one else at let's say Izuku's middle school would understand the true reason why Katsuki would lash out because what he does resembles what all of Izuku's bullies do to him: pressure him to conform. Pre-One For All Izuku stands out as different and constantly tries to rise above his position to become something society decrees he cannot be. Therefore, a significant part of Japanese society will generally approve of attempts to make him conform, even when some of those attempts are harsh and cruel and unreasonable and reactionary. MHA presents a caricature of that in the form of Izuku's middle school.

The fact that Katsuki identifies this toxic behavior in himself later in the story and decides to actively do something to change it IS the radical part. It's the piece that fits into the themes of MHA. It highlights a generally-accepted behavior in society that maybe society should rethink. It's asking for society to reconsider how it pressures people to conform, that sometimes nonconformity is good or at least should be tolerated to some degree. That's why Katsuki's story focuses so much on how his old behavior stems from fear. From the perspective of a "properly-functioning" collectivist society, pressure to conform should be done for the good of everyone in the society, not out of fear and misunderstanding. Katsuki's character arc provides one potential map for others in society to see the light and get to where he does.

And that's to say nothing of how Japan's versions of confrontation or retribution often look different from how they do in the west, that many of the forms of confrontation some people in the western fandom cry out for with regards to Katsuki sound absurd to an audience in the know. The karmic punishments Katsuki endures throughout the story are often overlooked by western readers, and is it any surprise? That readers from some societies--societies that laud nonconformity, tolerate counterculture, openly criticize the systems that be, preach about individual freedom and responsibility and justice and fairness, and watch and make movies and TV shows and other media about how victims of bullies achieve their righteous revenge--often miss how MHA doles out subtle, divine, poetic, karmic consequences for Katsuki's actions? That such readers often don't feel satisfied by MHA's dramatic ironies which serve more to guide Katsuki in a harmonious, productive direction rather than vindictively punish him and rest on its laurels as it laughs at his deserved misfortune? I don't blame anyone for feeling unsatisfied when their own societies have built up their expectations in such ways, but I do hope to draw your attention to it.

Now, does that mean you have to like and accept the Japanese attitudes about bullying? That you have to agree with the framing of pressure to conform as beneficial and productive? That, if you're triggered by the lack of overt condemnation of bullying in the story, you still have to like MHA? That, if you have personal traumatic experiences with Japan's bullying situation, you should shut up about it and accept that it's a good thing? No! In fact, I personally would hope that you don't! I think everyone should always have their perspectives on ANYTHING challenged so they can rethink and improve them, and Japan's attitude towards bullying is no exception! (And MHA actually does that in its own way!)

(And even saying that, I will always acknowledge that my perspective and opinions on this issue are heavily colored by my own experiences in life and the society in which I grew up and the ideas to which I've been exposed. This is and always will be my bias.)

But the question of what's the correct take on bullying is an entirely different beast. The question at hand here is about understanding the story and its characters as presented in MHA. If you don't come at this with a basic acknowledgement of how Katsuki's story reads to a Japanese audience in-context, you're going to be upset about what you see (which is a reasonable reaction). But I think if you're going to read a story, it's only due courtesy to understand the context surrounding its creation before you try to hold it to far-removed, foreign standards. There's a reason literature classes go over the history and context surrounding the older works they study. MHA is a Japanese story written for a Japanese audience. To focus on how it does not adhere to the typical western narrative of a bully's character arc is to miss the point entirely. If you are reading the story outside of Japan in a language other than Japanese, it is being translated so that you can read a Japanese story, not a story from your own culture. It's rude and self-defeating to expect stories from other cultures to suddenly cater to your own.

TL;DR Understanding the social context that informs bullying in MHA just might actually make the story more comprehensible and enjoyable for anyone who dares to learn about it, what do you have to lose?

Hot take for Steven Universe

I really hate the "the diamonds are an allegory for bigoted parents and therefore everything they did was okay actually" take that's become popular since the finale.

Now, to preface this, obviously I don't want Steven to start going around stabbing people. I don't think Bismuth was wrong in her anger at the diamonds, but SU is fundamentally a show about understanding and love triumphing, where everyone is capable of changing for the better. The diamonds aren't written as the kind of cartoon villains where you can just punt them into the sun and be done with it. So no, I didn't want this to end with the literal child, who's whole thing is seeing the good in everyone and helping them break harmful mindsets, to suddenly decide murder is okay.

What I did want is for an actual resolution to the diamonds' arcs where they have to make that change. Like, they spent milennia running an oppressive space empire where people who step an inch out of line are executed, that directly harmed every single one of our main characters - their treatment of Pink/Rose and Steven mirroring how some parents treat queer kids, while a good theme on its own, doesn't erase that. Even within that context, as someone who lived through something close to what it's referencing, the diamonds should need to really prove they've changed. Like, the allegory is there, but it's not all they did and the rest of what they did is so much more awful that reducing them to just the allegory doesn't work.

I think the real heart of the problem is not that Steven didn't beat up the diamonds; it's that the diamonds don't actually have to undergo any real change or redemption. Blue and Yellow realise Steven has Pink's gem, and then just assume everything can go back to normal - okay, sure, that's a way in - but where's the moment when they realise they're wrong? Where's the moment when they really have to work towards being a better person and realising their mindset was harmful the way characters like Peridot did?

It just isn't really there; the moment it starts, White steps in, and then White pulls Steven's gem out and starts laughing and then... she's just good now? We go straight into them healing the corrupted gems, and everything's okay now.

Except, it's not okay; there's a whole extra movie and season about how not okay things are. Except the movie is about the lingering effects of Pink's awfulness and it and the series are all about how Steven's loved ones failed him actually and all the fun in the series actually wasn't fun and everyone sucks. They start from a baseline of "the diamonds are kinda hard to get on with but they're good now" - we basically skipped over the kind of emotional shift and growth that was downright necessary for the diamonds' arc to feel satisfying.

So no, I don't think people are wrong to be upset that the main villains got off too lightly, and as a queer kid who had to go NC with an unaccepting parent, I don't think the whole queer-family-allegory thing means the ending is suddenly okay.

If anything, I think the real problem is the show mis-spending its runtime. And I know that it was cut short, and that Rebecca had to fight for every inch of queer rep, and I appreciate that. But I think it's just a badly paced show at times, and it cut things it really needed to keep (giving the diamonds an actual arc) in favour of things it didn't need (Future, in this case).

You know when your brain just randomly remembers some moments of your past, yea my brain just decided to hit me up with something.

And I remember this as clear as day

In grade one I was an kid who mostly was loud to be noticed because you I'm a kid and I want some attention I wasn't actually getting and all

I went to school on my birthday and I was so excited to tell everyone it was my birthday even the teachers... Like 100% no one legit cared, like no one they all brushed me off and went their ways playing with the other kids and I was right in the class not wanting to cry but I was like so sad.

And later that day after school my mom picked me up she usually didn't come for me because she works and my grandma used to pick me up.

Told her about my day because I was almost deadass crying my mom was and still is the best patted my head and told me not to worry.

We had ice cream that day and I could say I still smile to that same day.

Also why I'm mostly quiet now.

♡ glitchy honestly didn't... know something like him could even Happen again. i mean, he does and he always secretly hoped that one day someone, anyone in his game would gain sentience suddenly so he'd at least have someone else to talk to instead of himself and whatever player he had atm. and that makes you... very interesting and special to him.

♡ suffice to say, you two have a lot of shared grievances probably, and glitchy is a very rant-y person. both of you will shittalk and rant and complain about your similar situations and bond very fast over it. honestly, that's probably how you two got closer in the first place. So if you choose that to be the case he finds how different your approach is to that odd. but he supposes your game was probably not as fucking glitchy constantly, or at least wasn't known for its glitches. he's partially envious of that, but part of him is glad you didn't have to endure the hell he did.

I’m sure you get these all the time. But I’ve never read a long fic like Becoming Whole. And more notably, I haven’t read fanfiction in yeeears. But I’m devouring this. You’ve masterfully adapted the characters and in-game dialogue. I love all the details about timeframes, side jobs, and the pacing of when Aloy goes back to the base. Obviously, love Kotallo’s perspective and seeing what he gets up to day to day. Love the evolution of their relationship. Love the smut lmao.

But more than those things, I really admire and appreciate the straightforward, comfortable (and sexy) discussions of sex and consent. I wish I’d read something like this when I was younger. Seeing characters ask intimate questions without shame, set boundaries, communicate what they want, respect and trust each other with such warmth… Honestly, I’m not exaggerating, this is life-changing writing. I feel like reading this is healing something for me.

But omg, what you said about the frank and comfortable conversations about sex and consent. THIS MEANS SO MUCH TO ME -- SO SO MUCH. I will fully say that I agree with you re: wishing that there was better education for THE YOUTH about the importance of these kinds of conversations when you're in a relationship and trying to negotiate very intimate issues especially in a new relationship and/or when sex is new. Writing relationships and conversations like this is one of my passions in part because it's healing and fulfilling for me to write them, too! On a more personal note, my husband and I have been together for 10 years now and even we keep learning and growing together in terms of how we talk about sex to both of our benefits (huehuehue! 😏😂😂) and I take every opportunity that I can to wedge this kind of stuff into my fics, so I'm thrilled that it is healing and meaningful to you!!

As an aspiring writer who never posts my shit i shall also help our little friend.

1. NEVER add too many of , because those make your fics seem slow paced and annoying to read, especially to those with short attention spans. Using less of , makes your writing seem more confident and relaxed.

With the , you speak slower. It also happens with reading something in your head and makes you stop the reading in your mind, and as a person with short attention span that gets frustrating. (also i have noticed that fics with less , per chapter are more favored than those with more)

2. Allow others to comment and suggest shit, but never change a fucking thing unless you actually WANT it and see it as something YOU ARE NOT PRESSURED TO DO.

3. If you feel like you want to rewrite a fic, dont delete the old one. Use it as both a draft and the basis for the rewrite, and a way for you to see your improvements.

4. Write when you are NATURALLY inspired. This is the reason i hesitate over releasing my writings to the internet. My computer and phone are full of many WIPs, but most of them are more like long prompts i havent worked on in like... 5 years or more? I have tried forcing myself to do things that are similar to what originally inspired me to write those things, but i find my work severely lacking compared to when the mood strikes me, in both length and quality. I know the pain of having to wait for a new chapter to release, and the hell of seeing "discontinued" on a work i enjoy, and i swore to myself i would NEVER do it to anyone myself.

(i am a big fat liar. I have one work posted and i havent posted on it for two years, but i am in denial.)

I’m gonna do it. I’m gonna say it again.

1. I warn you against taking the story beats in MHA at face value. Just because something looks one way doesn’t mean Horikoshi won’t make it go a different direction later. He only puts like one or two major story beats per chapter. Don’t be fooled by them.

2. Just because Hawks lost his quirk doesn’t mean he’s done. If you think this, you’re guilty of the exact thing the moral of MHA warns you against: equating a person’s worth to their quirk. Why’re some of y’all agreeing with AFO on this? We literally got a flashback to chapter 1 where this perspective was explicitly debunked!

3. Heroes are heroes BECAUSE they make sacrifices for others. I guarantee that by the end of this, many characters will suffer permanent consequences not as a result of being heroes but because definitionally making these sacrifices is what makes them heroes in the first place. And yet I predict a significant, noisy portion of this “fandom” is gonna cry about how someone losing their quirk or becoming disabled or dying ruins everything because some of these characters can no longer be “pro heroes”--as if the story hasn’t been telling us all along that “pro heroes” aren’t necessarily real heroes. Anybody can be a hero, regardless of their quirk. That isn’t referring to PRO heroes but TRUE heroes. Some of y’all need to listen to Stain more closely.

Okay so, I haven’t really been active on AITA in a while, largely because of this, but back when I was, there was a particular genre of post that cropped up a lot, and always really got on my nerves. They’re almost certainly all fake, just because it’s a genre; the details are always pretty much the same, so either it was one person telling their same favourite story over and over again (which does happen) or it was just popular because it gelled with what that subreddit loved.

The protagonist is always a stern father figure™️ - he typically has some kind of rough past, often a divorce or similar (broken families turn up a lot in these - but they turn up a lot on AITA in general), and believes in good old-fashioned hard work, respect, and providing for his family. The antagonist will be his daughter (occasionally a niece or stepdaughter, but always a girl he has some degree of parental authority over - I don’t think I’ve ever seen it be a son or other child) who is in her late teens or early 20s, who is in some way entitled. She’s used to getting her way, and in particular having her father provide her with everything, until some issue arises where she does something petty/childish/reckless and the dad character gets to drop the hammer on her.

Because that’s what these are always about; they’re about Mr Stern Dad getting to punish his daughter in some serious way (like, suddenly withdrawing her college fund or refusing to let her use it, or forcing her to get a job for a whole summer to pay back thousands of dollars due to an accident she caused by being careless). Whatever the daughter does varies, and it normally is something genuinely bad (taking a car without asking and damaging it, demanding a better gift when given something nice, or in one instant letting the dog out by accident - although I have also seen one where her crime was just… not getting along with her stepfamily); but the dad will always make a point about how she doesn’t respect him, because that’s the worst crime of all, and then drop the hammer on her.

And these get loads of comments of people being like “I’ll be downvoted for this but you’re Not The Asshole she deserves this” - and they don’t get downvoted they just like to pretend they’re saying something controversial when really AITA loves these stories. Because it’s Mr. Stern Dad getting one over on Entitled Girl - and that’s what really annoys me about this genre. It’s set up so you’ll hate the daughter, and what she does is normally genuinely bad, but the dad figure is also just such a huge asshole in his own right who comes across like he doesn’t love his kid(s) and cares only about how much they bend over for him and it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

There’s a probably-related trend I saw in a lot of stories where it’s “parents practice gentle parenting -> have entitled child -> uncle does something mean/cruel/serious -> child miraculously behaves -> look! All it needed was discipline!” AITA just really seems to like stories where someone gets disciplined harshly and will conveniently ignore just how much of an AH the person doing the discipline is because it doesn’t suit their narrative.

Aphrodite: How do you and your f/o(s) like to show love to each other? Feel free to include your love languages, if you find that helpful.

Being supportive, spending time around each other, giving gifts... He likes to make sure that I know that he's there for me emotionally if I need someone to support me, and I do my best to return that by being there for him. When I'm the one in pain, usually that just means letting me cry it out or vent or rant or whatever, making sure that I'm listened to and heard. When it's him, usually he gets withdrawn, so I just tend to quietly chill around him until he feels like opening up about it. My love languages are gift giving and spending time together, so sometimes i'll also try to like, if I find something that reminds me of him, I'll either send him a picture of it or buy it for him as a surprise. And because he knows I love getting gifts, sometimes he'll do the same for me. Not as frequently as I do; his love language is more like acts of service lol.

also, affection. touch starved sarah melts at any sign of physical affection.

Hades: Would you ever consider a pet with your f/o(s)? What kind of pet? If you already have one, what is the pet like?

we have pokemon lol. Most of our Pokemon prefer their original trainers, but theoretically we could probably battle with each others' main Pokemon just fine. My Pokemon have varying reactions to him, as do some of his to me. But more or less, our Pokemon have gotten used to the other trainer and accepted that we'll be in their trainer's life.

Pika has shipped it hard since she saw the telltale signs from me*. I can't think of any Pokemon of mine that actively dislikes him, but I'm sure there are some who might have gotten jealous before. And, ofc, we know my Lucario's feelings on the matter (very proud/happy of whom his namesake is). Several of my Pokemon have helped him and his team with training without needing me to be there.

His Gyarados, since becoming tamed, is affectionate towards me. His Dragonites are varying levels of protective, as are some of his other Pokemon. They know how much I mean to their trainer and wouldn't hesitate to save me because it'd make him happy, or stuff like that.

No I mean I'm talking about how Kizaru was dragged through the Egghead Island arc... I mean the previous chapters showed Kizaru so like not himself, which given the fact that he made light clones of himself EFFORTLESSLY all of us expected Kizaru to go super Sayan God mode... but no he gets slapped like a bitch... or am I missing something??

I know Oda does this at times hyping up characters just to deliver dissapointment... *sighs*.

I think that's a boring strategy to fast pace the story, best comment I ever read is that is that Kizaru is fast but not as fast as plot amor, wow, micdrop cause that's accurate.

The Marines where the first opponent in one piece and I think from the rank of elite vice admiral on, you should deliver..

especially with a fan favourite like Kizaru who's experienced, also may I remind everyone Kizaru knew Basil Hawkins bounty from memory, that means Kizaru isn't dumb... he uses physical strength, intelligence and psychology

Kizarus assests, pika pika no mi, speed is weight we know, physically trained, capable brain even if slow, toys like a cat with a mouse in battle, aka psychological deception, battle experience.

But besides the writing style or story technique, what really bothers me is the gaslighting and projection techniques Oda uses... and as a survivor of a narc well, I'm all too familiar with them.. this is why half of Egghead doesn't feel right.

Now I know Kizaru suffers fighting his former friends and associates. Sentomaru has a good reason, and I think him and Kizaru would be fine. However, Vegapunk, the genius Dr Vegapunk, is the one who acts like a toddler... well here's my response

Friendship goes both ways. If Vegapunk cared about Kizaru, he should have stopped backstabbing him by studying the void century. Besides that Kizaru is like any other Marine in no position to disobey the orders of a Gorosei and Vegapunk should have considered that. Being an intellectual genius doesn't make you a wise man.
