🤩 ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: pirates016 Hello everyone! It's time to direct the spotlight toward our community members, and today we will get to know better pirates016!

"Hello AFOLs, my name is Grégory and I'm from France.

I was a huge LEGO fan during the 90's. I've collected pirates theme but mostly city with trains. I also was a Star Wars fan and I've built MOCs of it, because there were no official LEGO sets at that time.

Four years ago my kids started to play with LEGO and when I saw my old Eldorado Fortress and Caribbean Clipper the flame reignited in me. At that time there was the new pirates of barracuda bay so I knew I have to build it. With this set I discovered so many new LEGO parts and building techniques that it was the beginning of a new era for me after 25 years of dark age.

My collection was growing but I was sad to see all these sets taking dust on my shelf after building them. It was at this point that I decided to make LEGO photo because it was kind of a new way to play with it.

I started my instagram account three years ago to share my love for pirates theme. Unfortunately I was a newbie in photography (and still I am ) and I began to learn some photo techniques with youtube videos and following account on instagram, like Brickcentral.

At the beginning, the easiest way to progress was to snap outdoors photos because it needs no set up or materials. On the other side, I couldn't shoot all my sets outside so I began to try studio photoshoot, which was more difficult for me because I had to learn how to use lights.

Talking about gear, I'm shooting with a Canon 550D and to light my scene I normally use a LED ring, a lume cube or a small LED kit.

To create my scenes I always use very basics products, like wood, tree moss, sand and printed wallpaper for the background. My goal is to recreate natural scene and so I want to use what I can find in nature."

Pirates of Barracuda Bay

Hey, so here's the new Lego project I mentioned I was working on! Like the Lion Knights' Castle, the Pirates of Barracuda Bay was clearly designed by and for fans from the '80s and '90s, even going to far as to include my dude Captain Redbeard and his scurvy crew. I love that it looks like it's made from a wrecked pirate ship, and I almost immediately wondered if you can take it apart and build a ship out of it. Sure enough you can, and it even comes with instructions for converting it:

And now I'm really freaking torn whether to keep it as a ship or turn it back into the hideaway... Anyway, I love how it turned out, and I'll post more pics when I get a chance!

I have a few days off, its raining like crazy and i know im going to be bored.

Friend suggests to rent a Lego box. All the licenced sets are already rented out. I see a pirate set Barracuda bay).

I think perfect. I can rewatch (listen) to S&S while I build.

I notice two of the pirates are female (way to go Lego).

I realize I have other minifigs I could use to mod ...

1/3 build manuals completed in six hours 😳 fr though this is hands down the most satisfying set I’ve ever built, my last few big ones were from the Ideas theme and there’s a distinct difference in technique + style between fan designs and a lego designers’, and it’s all a far cry from what they were rolling out in the mid ‘00s. they’re all gorgeous (pirates of barracuda bay lego 21322 my beloved!) but this is next level

#it feels like a #j quiltblr momence #even though it’s not. but I’m sitting at my craft desk with my self-healing mat and a mess that will take me a long time to #turn into perfection #same juice different flavour! #tbh the stickers are a little annoying. there are 66 of them and they’re so fiddly and I insist they be straight #so it can take me like two minutes to apply one #but I don’t hate stickers as much as most fans do I think. the process is beautiful #and when this is done I’ll have to reconfigure my whole shelving situation to create a shelf tall enough to hold it. hehe! #lego #ninjago

MOC Showcase: Flying Dutchman Update!

One of my proudest MOCs in the whole collection is my Flying Dutchman ship from the Pirates of the Caribbean film series. And today, I made a drastic change to the model, one that vastly increases it’s aesthetic appeal and overall legitimacy as a build. 

I overhauled the sides of the hull, completely tearing out the angled plate technique and replacing it with a studs-not-on-top building method used in the LEGO Pirates of Barracuda Bay set. I built the new sides using standard 1x bricks, making sure to leave gaps for the cannon ports, and studs for the assorted barnacle details. I then attached them upside down using 1x2 clips. The difference is simply magnificent, and I wish I had some good pictures of the old model that highlight the change. You can notice the subtle change when looking back at the old model. But overall I am ecstatic over this new change.
