• This giant PokéDex was surrounded by TOMY figurines for sale on either side.

• Later, during 2003-2004, this PokéDex was remodeled into a giant GameBoy Advance SP with Gen 3 Pokémon data added.

• This idea of an interactive PokéDex for store visitors to play with was actually one thing from the Pokémon Center NY store that was never scrapped! Even today, in Japan, Pokémon Center stores still have an interactive PokéDex— although, the modern ones are much sleeker.

I love Monotype.  I don't really engage with competitive Pokemon anymore, but I always loved Monotype more than anything, because it's as close as I can ever get to being a gym leader.  I always really liked gym leaders.  I also pick favorites really hard, and the idea of building an entire team around a single type just felt like proof of mastery to me.  You need to know your strengths to create a winning strategy, but also know your weaknesses to avoid being too easily disrupted.  I always loved teambuilding through that lens.  So I've been really excited to get started on Monotype: The Event.

No, I'm pretty sure that, like everything else, it's weak to Psychic.

General Overview I have been waiting to do this since 12.5k meta dropped.  Off-type was inevitable, but it was funniest to try here.  And like, they want Monotype.  How am I possibly supposed to deny Mono Psychic their victory?  "Okay but all 15?  Was that necessary?"  Yes, absolutely.  No other types matter, only Psychic.

Parameters were a rough time, because Specific Damage Reduction cannot be selected.  We needed to allocate elsewhere.  All were done under offensive parameters.  But the sure-things were:

Phys/Special Shields (100 total) No Status (50) Sync Buff +5 (100) Offense +3 (100) Ally Healing Halved (100) Power on Hit +1 (100) Phys Damage Reduction (100) Gradual Healing (150) Offense +5 (150) Power on Hit +2 (200) Move Gauge -2 (300) Strength +6 (600)

This provided 2050 points.  As alternates, No Field Effect Changes was used for stages that didn't have Terrain.  No Stat Reduction was used for stages that didn't have Lucian or Anni May, while HP +2 was used for them instead.  Interference Immunity and Offenses +1 were used by most, but depending on parameters you only needed one or the other.  Strength +2 was also popular.  It's a lot more Strength, but nothing too excessive.

Vs. Bruno (Sabrina/Tate/SS Steven) Bruno's first, because he's mostly physical so Reflect matters, and Sabrina is frail.  Sabrina team was chosen because I wanted to clear inconsistency first.  Tate only has a 40% flinch rate, which is never good.  Sabrina's also able to boost speed, which is ideal for the flinch pressure to keep up around Steven's 4-bar spam.  That said, beating this pre-sync did not happen.  Steven needed to take a hit.  In his defense, he's 1/5.  3/5 could've done it for sure.  But Protect + Reflect keeps the whole team alive, as it turns out.  Which is just hilarious.  It took three tries to get it exactly right, but Steven wins again.  I continue to not need candy for him.

Vs. Bertha (NY!Sabrina/Will/Giovanni) Status is more likely to take effect.  I figured since the tips said to Confuse, I'd play into that with the parameter that makes status stronger.  NY!Sabrina applies that confuse status with decent reliability, though Will mostly flinches.  Or at least, he's supposed to.  See, I chose this team for its disruptive effects against a stage with weather in play.  Will was supposed to stall turns, while Sabrina applied Confuse to potentially deny attacks from going through, but Will hit a record low number of flinches.  This fight had to be cleared pre-sync.  Which means focusing damage on center with Psychic, and getting sync twice beforehand; first with Sabrina, then Giovanni.  It shouldn't have been quite as rough as Will made it seem, but oh well.  This was also when I had to really examine parameters and shift things around.  A few adjustments went from feeling impossible to landing immediately on success, so maybe it was the HP +2 parameter being active.

Vs. Grimsley (SS Dawn/Lucian/Caitlin) Bonus special damage.  "Oh cool, so Caitlin can contribute!"  ...yes.  Yes, Caitlin most definitely contributed in meaningful ways, and did not at all struggle with her DPS.  This definitely wasn't mostly just Dawn tanking for Lucian to explode things.  Okay fine, it was, but Caitlin took out the right side!  Which was needed.  Dawn's one serious weakness is getting hit with flinch, because it blocks her heal.  So guess what Grimsley can do constantly.  Good work, me.  I wanted Caitlin to dunk on her friend, and this is what I got.  It wasn't too bad once Dawn could get through without flinching to a 20%.  Which was four failed attempts.  Seriously Dawn?

Vs. Lorelei (MU Mesprit/Bianca/SS Lusamine) Half time to sync, you say?  Sounds like someone's in for the beating of their lives.  SS Lusamine is ridiculous, I love her.  Mesprit can buff special attack, which means you can conserve Lusamine's trainer move for a sudden -2 sync cooldown on the way to the second shot.  Perhaps most notably, Mesprit can apply shields, which Lorelei can't break past.  With half time to sync, one benefit of it is that first sync is much weaker, because the "Power up on hit" parameters don't have chances to activate either, so we survived pretty easily despite offensive parameter sync.  Bianca provided Terrain, because we were not messing with half sync cooldown.  Between this and Mesprit's Master Passive, Lusamine was tossing around bonkers damage.  Easy first try win.

Vs. Champion Serena (C!Bede/Anni May/Lodge N) There is only room for one Neo Champion, and it is Bede!  Because he uses a real Pokemon, and not that bitch frog!  The emphasis here was on Lodge N.  Serena can debuff special attack per hit, so the obvious solution is for N to put her to sleep.  It's guaranteed, unlike flinch, so this has consistency.  I wish I could say this was planned, but truth be told I didn't know how it would play out, and saved this team specifically because I didn't want to try with Lucian/Caitlin and realize it was impossible once I got there (it would've been, smart call).  Bede also just pumps damage to stupid levels, and has the chance to freeze as well.  Anni May was the main damage source, with her Tech sync nuke dealing crazy damage, and her DPS being wildly supplemented by Bede.  All that said, Serena's scary on offense, and N needed to be on top of the sleep game, or Bede would go down.  I think this took us two tries, since the first just...the sleep got away from him.

Final Thoughts Off-type really isn't too awful.  I made a big deal about it being much harder when they announced the bonus and showed off the parameters, but it's completely doable.  None of these are exactly F2P, but if you were looking for F2P, you'd either Stall or find means of clearing on-type.  Off-type is generally for the bigger guns.

That said, fun as Psychic is, they had their turn.  I'll probably do a different type next time.  Not sure which.  Maybe Grass, just for funsies.

Idk if you know anything about this, if not, I apologize.

I somehow convinced my sister that I want to go on a vacation (from canada) to New York to see the trains/subways. I've looked around the internet for some tours, and found some really interesting ones!

Though, do you know of any special places to visit? Either museums or locations that'd be interesting? Apart from the pokemon center shop of course lol

(A few years ago we went to NY and the tour guide told us to stay on the train past the last station -where it would turn around- to see an abandoned station. I spotted the entrance but that's it. Are there any other cool locations in your opinion?

Of course, only if you don't mind! Trains are just so interesting! Like, how the NY subway runs on metal wheels, compared to my city's subway tires (like a car, so rubber tires), and how the NY subway somehow chose to have the interior of the cabs have AC but all the heat is thrown out into the platforms? It's hilarious to me! And apparently they started including the Japanese point and call technique?? I love trains and subways!)

OH MY GOD, THAT WAS CITY HALL! That's my favorite subway station in NYC! It's the oldest, built when the NYC Subway opened in 1904, and it's gorgeous, with Guastavino tile on the ceilings. Here's what it looks like when it's lit up:

City Hall has been closed since the 1940s because the trains got longer and couldn't fit alongside the platform anymore, which is a shame because in my opinion it's the prettiest subway station in NYC. Right now, unless you go in via a New York Transit Museum tour, it might not be the safest to try to do the ride-through, because there's currently an initiative that forces everyone off at the end of lines (they're trying to "combat homelessness," but I suspect that isn't going to use the solution I would, which would be to house everyone so they had stability, give them access to mental health treatment and drug rehab programs, and help them find employment when they were settled).

If you're into trains, I highly recommend these places specifically:

Grand Central. You HAVE to see Grand Central in person to truly appreciate that ceiling. Check out the whispering gallery down by the oyster bar - if you stand diagonally across from someone and talk into the wall, they can hear you all the way on their side of the room! There's a library there that has the carpet from the 20th Century Limited (it's above the Apple store, which is currently trying to unionize), but I haven't even managed to get in there yet - it's by appointment and I've been busy.

If you want to cry, Penn Station. If you can find the brass rails from the original building, touch them and be sad with me. Moynihan Train Hall is an improvement, but it's not the original Penn Station and it never will be. Nothing will be.

The High Line! The High Line is a park that used to be a freight railroad. The New York Central used to own said railroad, and it used to go straight down 10th Avenue at street level to get to St. John's Depot. This did not go very well and a lot of people managed to get hit by trains, to the point that they started calling it Death Avenue. They actually hired men on horseback to precede the trains and warn the public they were coming - these men became known as the West Side Cowboys. Eventually, they figured out that they could elevate the line, which they did, building a new freight terminal (St. John's Terminal). The line was eventually abandoned, and it was rehabilitated into a park. It's a nice, relaxing walk with a lot of cool plants and art, and you get to pass through and near some old factories and drop-off points.

The New York Transit Museum. They're out in Brooklyn, so it can be a bit of a hike if you're mostly centering your trip in Manhattan, but if you like trains it is ABSOLUTELY worth it to go visit. Their collection of vintage equipment is amazing, and the station itself that the museum is housed in was a filming site for The Taking of Pelham One-Two-Three. You have to register for visiting times in advance right now, so if you're planning on including them in your trip in a few months book it now! They also have a secondary gift shop in Grand Central.

Hoboken Terminal. It's just a PATH ride away from Manhattan, and the ceiling of the waiting room has Tiffany glass skylights. Absolutely stunning, and you can then take the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail to...

Communipaw Terminal, in Jersey City, which I talked a bit about in this post. Both Hoboken Terminal and Communipaw Terminal have Bush train sheds, which were considered a revolutionary design at the time and are now historically significant.

Now, if you're looking for non-train stuff...

Nintendo NYC. I’m there frequently because, y’know, video game merch. If they do a Splatoon 3 release event I’m going to try to go to it, actually. If you’re looking for Pokemon plush, go to the second floor!

American Museum of Natural History. My favorite place in the entire world and where I wanted to work as a child (I wanted to be a paleontologist). I did my archival internship and practicum there when I was in grad school, fulfilling my childhood ambitions in a way. If you like dinosaurs, this is the museum for you! (Also has a great subway stop with cool art - 81st Street!)

Metropolitan Museum of Art. If you’re more into arms and armor, ancient Egypt, or historical art in general, this is the museum for you.

MoMA (Museum of Modern Art). MoMA has free admission on Friday nights, and it has some classics, like Andy Warhol’s soup cans and Van Gogh’s Starry Night!

Take a walk in Central Park. If you want to avoid the tourists, get up to the northern part of the park.

If you like Seinfeld, you can eat at Tom’s Restaurant. I was actually there just a few days ago. It’s a good place to get the real NYC diner experience.

Get a hot dog or pretzel from the street vendors. Trust me, just do it.

The real-life Casteliacone can be obtained from a Mister Softee truck, if you happen to see one!

If you want to go to the Statue of Liberty, that has to be booked months in advance, so be warned and plan ahead.

If you’re interested in LGBTQIA+ history, visit the Stonewall Inn. There’s a cool augmented reality history project associated with it called Stonewall Forever that I recommend as an archivist.

If you’re more punk, St. Mark’s Place used to be the center of punk activity in NYC. It’s toned down now, but there’s a rather NSFW (...interesting art within) izakaya called Kenka (lit. “brawl”) that’s the best place to get a meal for under $20 in NYC. You have to get there around 4:30, get your name on the waiting list, and then be there when it opens for the night around 5 pm to get in at a reasonable time without waiting too long. The waitlist WILL get long. Kenka actually appeared in the Love Live movie, and New Yorkers who saw the movie recognized it instantly and were extremely happy.

Nell - A Brief Guide

Annabella Gracia Buonacci is an OC that I typically use in fandom content. They’re usually over the age of 25, single, and use She/They pronouns.

We’ll start with the two Marvel universes first, as those are the “simplest”.

MCU Nell (Current Age: 31)

MCU Nell is a nurse in the “Pro Bono” ER at Flushing general in Queens NY. She befriended May at a grief counseling group, and through her met Peter Parker, and shortly after that found out he was the up-and-coming superhero Spider-Man. Post Civil War, she met and befriended Tony Stark, who introduced her to Thor. She built up a relationship with Thor, starting to see each other just before Infinity War. She survived the Snap, but in the 5 years between Infinity War and Endgame, their relationship fell apart. Post Endgame she divides her time between her full time hospital job, her part time Avengers/Stark Industries/Government-ish position, her burgeoning relationship with Doctor Strange, and gaining grey hairs helping out young heroes.(Tag: MCU Nell)

Spider-Verse Nell (Current age: 36) 

Spider-Verse Nell is also a nurse, working generally in the hospital rather than in a specific wing. She knew Peter Parker, and had a similar relationship to him that she has with MCU Spider-Man. She met and dated Aaron for some time, which was how she met Miles. Aaron and Nell didn’t date for long, but remained good friends after that, and she saw Miles a few more times pre-film. Post-film, she offers Miles advice in the form of Spider-Man 1.0 anecdotes, and medical attention. There’s a running gag that she’s dating a superhero, but no one knows which one. Oh, also, she is the niece of Doctor Olivia Octavius. That’s not as important as you'd think it’d be, but still.  (Tag: Spiderverse Nell)

A Hat in Time:

AHIT “Canon” Nell (Age at “death”: 40) :

This Nell is technically a Prelude to her game self. They are the town apothecary, friendly with all and while reclusive, isn’t seen as weird. She’s divorced, and has been close with the royal family (Read: Vanessa) for well over a decade. She’s also friendly with the prince, and might be related to the florist (I never decided on that)  (Does not have specific tag, typically grouped under “Ahit Nell”, “Subconite Nell” and “Ghost Nell”)

There are two possible endings for “Canon” Nell: One where she is a ghost, and one where she is a subconite.

Subconite Nell: 

Subconite Nell is the most likely outcome, and occurs if Nell remains in Subcon when it freezes over. Subconite Nell remembers next to nothing about their past life, not even knowing that the handkerchief on their head was one they used in life. They do regular subconite things (They quite like being hung for some reason….. ) and they are the only subconite who is allowed alone in Snatcher’s lab. Their personality is quite the same to when they were alive though. Typically the default Nell for all other Post-canon AUs.(Tag: Subconite Nell)

Ghost Nell:

If Nell leaves for the coast just before the fall of Subcon, returns and is traumatically killed by Vanessa, they become a ghost much like Snatcher, but with a few notable differences. For one, They typically keep themselves in a more human shape, but at a far larger size than Snatcher normally uses. Their eyes and magic are cyan, though they don’t use it frequently. They are quite fond of Hat Kid, and the cusp of their arc confronts their mysterious (or not so mysterious now) death. They spend most of their time cultivating a field of flowers and herbs. “”””Coffee Shop AU”””” Nell (Current Age: 40) : 

The School nurse at the local Elementary, She’s jaded and has a somewhat nebulous past that most people don’t even know. She loves coffee, gardening, and listening to music. Very obviously a witch but no one seems to notice. She’s a side character in every sense, but has a good sense of humor about it (self aware). Her best friend, Daph, became obsessed with the local cryptid - The “Snatcher” and started just… sending her all of this merch. Her house looks like a Snatcher museum. She takes it in stride and quite frankly, it’s a running joke at this point

Other AUs: (Might be edited at a later date)

The Little Contractor ( @bittybattybunny​ ): Very similar to Coffee Shop AU, but instead of Daph buying the merch, she does it herself and partially does it to take the piss out of Ru. She babysits for Eclipse and Ru occasionally.

Pokemon (AHIT related): Runs a small, remote Pokemon center in the middle of a forest with a Chimecho as their main assistant. There is also a Blastoise that lives out of a pond near the center. This is mostly inspired by @ahatintimepieces​ Lawyer!Eevee AU

Victorian AU: The doctor of the village of Subcon. Very no nonsense,doesn’t appear very much until the final act.

Whoops, forgot to post this even though I cleared it way back in monday... Anyway, here its my Champion Stadium run from this week. Ill post next weeks tomorrow, If I remember to do it.

This week was kinda easy. Ill try to remember my strategy, but its been a week, so the breakdowns for my strategies will be less detailed than usual

The first fight was Marshall. Sync countdowns were reduced by half. First, all units buffed their stats, Skyla EXed first, so then SS!Elesa can reduce sync countown so she syncs next, and finally Blue so he can hurricane Marshall and his team. I kinda regret pullign for NY!Lillie, since I didn’t get her and only got 1/5 NY!Lance, which isn’t as good as 5/5 Blue, and he won’t be getting any candy any time soon with my SS!Lusamine at 1/5, and that Serena alt coming soon. What a waste of gems. Speaking of that Serena alt, if I pull her early I migh go for that new skyla unit if its still around.

Caitlin was next, and aditional effects were more likely to happen. However, I accidentally put status protection and didn’t notice, so Volkner couldn’t paralyze, so N couldn’t get Static Shock to activate. He still did enough damage to win with the first sync, so whatever.

Grimsley had boosted special damage, so naturally I went with a team that is mostly physical attacks. And with critical hit immunity. Smart moves on my part. However, I went with stalling in mind, so SS!Leaf and Dawn worked great together, and the poison damage finsihed him of. In hindsight, I should have gone with BP!Erika instead of SS!Erika, since the trap damage would have been more effective.

Shauntal was ground weak, and stat lowering effects have greater effects, so I came with my Anniversary N. No need to say more.

Now I don’t remember which parameter i chose for Iris. But judging by the fact I had Champion!Iris in the team, I probably went with stat lowering effects. Halloween!Caitlin buffed and Synced first, Iris debuffed, and Cyrus was the main damage dealer. I think the both synced, Cyrus went after caitlin, to clear the side pokemon, and Iris to finish up the center, but Im not sure, since its been a week, and what I here did is not as clear to me as the other teams.

Did you know?

• One of the relics left of the Pokémon Center NY is the Pikachu Statue; there were 250 of these made and were given to World of Nintendo dealers. They pop up on eBay from time to time. It should also be mentioned that, as of Nintendo NY’s Grand Opening in February of 2016, this statue was removed and replaced with another statue, this time with Pikachu sitting on a Pokéball.

• Another relic of the original PCNY store are the brass door handles below (both join together to form a Pokéball). These door handles have withstood all of the location’s various remodelings and are still present at Nintendo NY today, even through the COVID-19 pandemic. They are one of the only original features from the PCNY store to still exist at the modern-day location, without having been altered in any way.

• The only other item from the original PCNY store to still be at Nintendo NY is the famous “Gulf War GameBoy.”
