ok so re: logan and racism (and marcia) because i’ve been having Thoughts TM rotating in my mind for a day or two but like. logan, obviously, is a very racist individual, but i think mostly in the sense that he perpetuates and weaponizes racism rather than actively, like, unironically having said bigoted beliefs (for the most part of course lmao)

in the sense that, like, he does not believe that, say, white people are inherently superior, and he knows and acknowledges that they have a leg up in the world because he’s many things but he’s not stupid. but to him, that’s not a bad thing. it’s not a good thing either. it’s just .. a Thing. it’s the way the world works. (same with misogyny and other forms of oppression. “i didn’t make the world,” he says to shiv after saying her being a woman was a minus.) 

he’s got a, like, might makes right natural selection type proto-fascistic sense of morality that prioritizes power and strength above all else.  rather than condemning systemic bigotry that he is very very very aware is real and exists, it’s like -- it is what it is. the world isn’t fair, tough luck. he’s aware that spreading racism, islamophobia, antisemitism, etc is profitable for him and therefore he will do it and he won’t feel bad because he didn’t create the world and it’s not his fault that that’s the way things are. racism and bigotry are tools and he won’t hesitate to use them if it’ll serve his interests. it’s all part of the game.

like he’s one of those people who would look at african and asian countries who have had their resources fucked to hell by colonialism and capitalism and imperialism and white supremacy, like iraq, egypt, iran, ethiopia, etc, and he wouldn’t try to downplay how much they contributed to humanity or whitewash them the way your run-of-the-mill old racist man would, but he’d also have no sympathy for their current suffering. he’d think well it’s their fault they let themselves get lazy and soft. that’s what you get. he wouldn’t downplay the crimes europeans have committed against native americans but he’d say that “they were conquered” and that’s the way the world works. oops sorry tough luck you lost. 

which brings me to: he respects people of color who, to him, “rise above” racism -- like marcia. because to him, human rights aren’t inalienable. you have to claw your way through the world to be respected and perceived as a human being but if you DO manage to do that -- then you’re one of the good ones. you deserve respect. (romanticizing suffering like a good old catholic lol) i think he feels like him and marcia are similar in the sense that they both rose above hardship -- in the sense that they’re both immigrants (obviously with VERY different experiences) who made something of themselves.

so he respects marcia in a way he doesn’t respect anyone else in the show, in a way. he doesn’t respect his kids or the pierces because they were born with a silver spoon in their mouths and he doesn’t respect poor people either because he grew up poor too and he still made something of himself so fuck that everything’s an excuse. he’s like the poster-child of someone who has personally experienced injustice (being abused as a child, living in poverty, etc) and rather than not wanting anyone else to experience these things, you’d rather everyone else did because that’s only fair. like why do YOU get to have a safe space when I didn’t? no fuck that

so like i think if one of the kids were to say something bigoted or micro-aggressive to marcia in his presence he’d be quick to be like, okay, well what do YOU do successfully. quickly. however. he wouldn’t of course actively make the environment they live in safe for her, and he WILL actively promote racism against her people because that’s what works for him, just like he didn’t take measures to keep his kids safe from the people he associates himself with.

So general notes - i was pretty disappointed in 15 but this one has been hyped up. I'm anticipating the Marcia twist but we shall see. Book 8 was a game changer so 16 could also be "Planned since the beginning" ok OK ok One -"Look like an innocent flower, But be the serpent under it." Oh this is Marcia for sure -ok that was a recap chapter (please be the only one) but the deliberate focus on Dean is  for my suspicions Two -if we don't end up with Quentin 's sister taking the throne or some shit so he keeps living with Toby I will actually be shocked -quentin "no title yet" you fucking smart-ass -OK Toby that's ominous. What else DO you plan to do -the luidaeg! My friend the luidaeg -an interesting bit about how purebloods tend to forget "recent" stuff if it didn't affect them personally. And the mention of oberon's wives. Soooo sus. -we keep mentioning the Queens :)))) -simon! My friend Simon -me: man why is Luna being such a bitch to Simon *remembers what he did* oh uh actually that's pretty valid -still always going to be amused that Simon ended up replacing Sylvester as awk dad figure. SIMON of all characters. Probably one of the best things the series pulled off -we bringing back the events of book three? We mentioning blind Michael's "children"? Sus. It's Dianda with the steel chair! -this is so funny cause Raysel is like. The FINAL book one enemy character to become an ally. I think we got all of them now. Honestly not sure I expected it but it makes sense considering lmao -role reversal pokemon, all it took was sixteen books of character development Four -the scent of roses overlaying the whole brown household. And unspeakably ancient roses at that. Like. It's GOTTA be a Queen right. Gotta be I can't think what else. Titania is the most obvs option, but iirc Maeve has a connection to the Rose Roads, right? -the Stacy "no significant others" thing is still ultra sus esp considering how many children she herself has. And them like all being seers. At least the girls. -but I think this narrows down 'who's the secret baddie' to 'not stacy' at least. ((LATER NOTE: LOL LMAO ROFL)) -mfw the title is actually in the story. Has that fucking happened before??? -poor Jessica. Wasn't expecting a kid to get killed off in such a gruesome way -it's odd because the memory seems to be edited so Toby doesn't see who killed Jessica. And Anthony doesn't recognize her. BUT Jessica says "I know her and I can't know her and I WONT know her" which! What does that mean! -like that makes sense if she's one of the Queens. And we have confirmation (?) That the perpetrator is a woman. -and the voice is unfamiliar to Toby, but does that mean anything really -presumably this has to be a character we have met. And like. Obvs my suspicion is Marcia. No guarantee there yet but... since Marcias signature has been notably absent, to have such a strong focus on this woman's magical signature is notable, imo. -and where is Stacy in all this? I guess one interp is she's the one who did it and got... possessed? -Maeve hasn't been outright murderously evil in what little we have gotten of her. So if it's either faerie queen I guess it would have to be Titania right -which. OK. If it's Marcia I'm still basically right I just didn't assume she was EVIL just that she was HIDING something. -and the authors note all but says this was a long con. Like it's GOTTA be SOMEONE we know. Five -there's also a lot of reflection on book one characters and who they used to be. Which. IF ITS MARCIA. -also a lot of book three references and parallels what with the brown family being attacked and big relevant to the plot -which circles back to Maeve, not titania, because blind Michael was hers. And he had the whole Ride thing. And the extended Tam Lin reference happened in that book. -god I will be honest I have no idea why they're all seers though. You got me there. -quentin going Royal Diplomatic mode is always fun -Oh boy is it adventure time with Simon? That's always fun. He is the guy on the cover I think -no way is this Just Evening that would be dumb -ok so there's a line about the direct children of Firstborn having a strong manifestation of the powers their "line" will have. Considering the context of all of Stacy's children being incredibly rare Seers that implies some Stuff -human heritage does not preclude someone from being a Firstborn. Amandine's mother was human-- Janet. Who's to say there wasn't another human woman? OR that Janet didn't have multiple kids? OR one of the QUEENS had a male human consort? -one could also use a hope chest or dochas sidhe to emphasize their human lineage and disguise who they really are. (Notably this concept applies to, you guessed it, Marcia). -this theory is basically that Stacy is a Firstborn. Which would be pretty wild. But it would make blind Michael targeting her family less coincidence and more deliberate -consider also how weird Stacy is about her children dating people. Especially odd considering she herself has had so many kids. -"this is my father Simon Lorden" is a string of words no one would fucking expect Toby to say yet here we are Six -yeesh quentin why are you resenting Toby for like not being dead -"if anyone was going to hurt me, it wasn't going to be [Stacy]" holy fucking shit what a way to immediately frame her as suspicious -she is pretty sus right now and the bit about her surviving by being sweet and non threatening DOES apply to the Shakespeare quote. -toby does confirm it couldn't be her as there was literally no trace of blood anywhere which. Boy do I hope so -..... oh my god is there a CANON reason for Toby's tendency to dismiss vital information. That would be insane -so if Stacy was compelled the question still remains re: who and why. Because they've got to be a character we know. I'm adamant about that. -lmao the magic being booby trapped? Seven -something important and at least a little bit time sensitive -- that sounds VERY familiar but I can't remember from where. Fuck. -it could be a compulsion spell but could it also be a geas? Can they mentally affect people that dramatically? -like stacy seems docile and controlled, not like an evil mastermind. -oh God did Toby get turned into a human. That seems. Hm -I think that actually did happen VERY briefly in another book -but she still has magic so might have been an involuntary blood shift. That has also happened before -so it seems like whatever trap was on Stacy nullifies magic? ... which would mean Toby can't super heal. Or interact with the fae world, maybe? And it's not just her since Quentin also got hit. -i assume that's like a plot device that will go away but sure is a problem! -i am going to SCREAM the whole scene with the GATEKEEPER and trying to trick him with the leaves is THE EXACT THING SHE DOES TO MARCIA IN THE FIRST BOOK. Like are you kidding me. -We are also going to a lot of book one locales. It isn't one to one, but... the Brown's house? A Safeway, specifically? Past a gatekeeper into a (different) park? -im glad the phones still work, probably because it's mortal technology. -.... why did Stacy react badly to Simon. -... unless that's not her? -FAERIE OINTMENT YOU SAY. -MARCIA NEEDS IT, YOU SAY. SHE IS IN GOLDENGREEN WHERE YOU SHOULD PROBABLY GO, YOU SAY. Eight -that's one hell of a trick because it seems to create illusions just so those affected can't perceive magic. Which as Toby mentions, even humans can a little bit. -"if I wasn't married I would have kissed her" October Daye and her latent bisexuality -THE LINE ABOUT MULTIPLE REALITIES AND ONLY PERCEIVING A FEW???? THERE IS A THROWAWAY LINE IN ANOTHER BOOK ABOUT MARCIA BEING ABLE TO SEE BETWEEN RELAITIES THAT NEVER EVER GETS ADDRESSED. I AM GOING TO STRANGLE SOMEONE Nine -oh cool we're setting up a future thing for evening waking up and trying to reclaim Simon, looking forward to that one -october just said with Certainty the smell wasn't Maeve's roses. I'd think that.... probably narrows it down? Probably indicates titania? Shit is fucky but Toby is a bloodhound, it would be difficult to fool her. -but not impossible. *staring at Marcia* -walther! My friend Walther. In distress -yes fucking YELL at Oberon we love to see it -oh so like, valid reason to keep the eldritch deep realms sealed from the rest of faerie. Is it her Ten -the luidaeg being terrified would yes, indicate titania. -holy lore dump batman -i mean it's all stuff we kind of Been Knew just grouped together in an understandable  narrative -but yeah, line about titanias descendents coming into the Maeve descendents homes and murdering them sure is. Apt. -OH COOL. canon reason for the Rides. Probably bad we uh stopped doing those, all things considered. As bad as human sacrifice is, I feel like a wound in reality destroying everything is a little worse. -was blind Michael replacing the Rides? Or was it just a bland imitation for "he was crazy" reasons -and another reference to fairy gold   -titania disguised as the least among them. And stacy having weird fucking kids and not wanting them to reproduce and make their own lines. Like. It makes sense. -but it isn't outright confirmed yet. It's a good twist if so tho -LIKE. MAN. -went on a whole rant but this actually makes me even more suspicious of Marcia cause like. It's a lot. There's themes. There's NEW themes and callbacks in this book alone. Dying on this hill -did an entire crazy wall w/ Katy I won't recreate here lmfao Eleven -"like we were always meant to end up here" lmao shut the fuck up -god the luidaeg is so fucking cool. Jarring to hear her call the Brown kids children of Titania -OK the whole exchange about the Ellylon firstborn is sus as fuuuck. It would be soooo funny if it was Jin or something.  Like Jin is the only Ellylon we've met right? Or at least the only real significant one? To be clear I don't think thats the case but it would make this scene incredibly funny. -The Luidaeg really living up to her mythology with the whole stealing children thing (even if it's for good reasons) -poor mitch :( -the line about her geas and mitch knowing the woman who did it better than he knows is. Oof. Burn -god I love the luidaeg --there was a big reading gap here, I restarted the chapter Twelve -i do have to wonder if Stacy is *really* gone forever. Obvs titania is still bad enough that she murdered one of her kids -the Stacy is gone quote might be The Quote even if it's a spoiler -the luidaeg says Stacy never rightly existed/wasn't a real person, but is that really true? Is the person an amnesia victim becomes less of a person if they regain their old memories and experiences later? Of course not. -the fucking LINE about Maeve hiding under a rock or a pier. AND her loving the water. Is such blatant fucking foreshadowing for Marcia. I don't know what else to even call it. Goldengreen is in a cliff (rock) with a plot critical pier in it next to the ocean (water). Marcia was under the protection of a water fae (Lily, an Undine) before she got killed off. Like. -way way way too much stuff lines up that this book draws attention to. If it's a red herring that comes off as poor writing to me because it's pointless and unfair to do that without a damn good justification. I'd like to THINK McGuire wouldn't do something that cheap. It would be "series rage quit" for me -"alone, the way she always seemed to be." Mmmm. Hm. -I think we are addressing the "Oberon kind of breaks the story" bit decently well. I'm interested to see the role he plays here. Thirteen -"faerie is built on a foundation of falsehoods and hidden truths" how to describe this series in a nutshell -yeah call Oberon out for being a shithead and uh, causing the deaths of dozens of innocent children -an interesting comparison between Eira's compulsion and Oberon's. His sucks but is framed as slightly better because you're aware of it -oberon... does kind of break the world a little. He just gives Toby the answer to her problems here. There is a heavy emphasis on him being a god. I'm questioning how long he can remain an entity in the story, or at least one that is neutral-good to the protagonists. I could see him being killed off as an excuse to have this kind of crazy power (his blood) out of reach for the rest of the series. Would also be a "redemption equals death" type thing.  Conceivably Titania or Maeve COULD kill him, it's vaguely implied they have ways to kill each other. Hmmm -I mean hell it's implied anyone can kill Titania, at least, if they have the right weapon and distraction -simon isn't biologically related to her but Toby is PISSED at the implication he isn't her father. On some level I'm like "yeah we get it" but on the other I eat that shit up -"I decided to stab Oberon at the earliest reasonable opportunity" because of what he (temporarily!) did to Simon. God damn, Toby. -like it makes sense mind control would be a trigger considering his story arc. -the music playing in the house is so creepy dude -THE LINE ABOUT THE SMELL OF CINNAMON. STACY STANDING IN THE KITCHEN MAKING CINAMMON PANCAKES. I AM ACTUALLY SCREAMING. this EXACT THING happens with Marcia in an earlier book. And there's a super heavy emphasis on the smell of cinnamon. Which is SUPER WEIRD and a red herring in context because the disposable bad guy of the book has cinnamon in his magic signature. (And there was no reason for her to have been doing it. It didn't serve a plot function.) -The mask kind of cracking with her calling Tybalt a dick like, to his face, but not like it matters at all in context -also. More deliberate book one references -yup definitely gradual mask cracking. Now just burning Toby for existing -Stacy being evil is ALSO like, the last book one "ally" to turn antagonist. Parallel with Rayseline turning into an ally this same book. I guess there's still some more minor characters like Danny that haven't had a moral shift yet. But... -poor Toby:( -tobyyy :( -like you would expect this to Suck and be Emotionally Harrowing and all but. Boy it sure is. Fourteen -this is soooo oof. God. -the transitions between Stacy and Titania are very well done. -and Stacy begging Toby to kill her. God. -this is good but there are some... weird things in terms of the writing. like. -a lot of back and forth between whether Stacy was ever real or an individual but that contradiction isn't ever really... noted. Both have been conclusively stated which isn't really possible. It is a little confusing -also they made a big deal about Stacy calling Blind Michael a "beast" because of the connotations re: Tybalt. But then Toby straight up calls a vine construct restraining her a "terrible beast". That's just a little odd. A little unfortunate. -maeve if you're out there *staring at Marcia* now would be the time -in before tybalt with the steel chair -calling titania collateral damage in the quest to kill Stacy is an. Interesting reversal -the #lore that Titania can't harm Toby like. Makes sense, but seems very convenient lmao. Like how else would Toby get out of this situation I guess. -the line about heroes always losing because they have scrupules while villains don't is too real -then again titania calling herself a villain seems a little on the nose. Villains rarely think they are. Something something hero of their own story something. Maybe that's nitpicky or pedantic to say? I just hoped for something other than a mustache twirling cartoon villain. Stacy adds a little nuance but she is for all intents and purposes gone -ok it's a LITTLE better that titania blackmails Toby and makes it personal. I can excuse that angle to the whole "do no harm" loophole. Even if we have definitely seen it before (Brightest Fell Amandine, anyone?) -her whole "no one can stop me" bit. MAEVE. IF YOURE OUT THERE *STARING AT MARCIA* -because Oberon wouldn't kill his wife, but his other wife who has every reason to hate her might -oh we have Social Commentary with the whole "don't kick the can for the next generation to deal with" bit. -so ok this does seem like an impossible situation to get out of. My guess is Toby finds an irresistible distraction for Titania and kills her while she isn't paying attention. I don't think we can seal Titania away for later at this point. I think she does genuinely need to be killed off this book or everything breaks. OR the conflict extends directly into next book, but that would be unusual for the series. Then again killing off such a major player set up for so long in the same book she gets revealed is a little underwhelming, the shock value and emotional turmoil aside. So who knows -maybe throw her into the reality wound like they did with Maeve (who we know is alive and semi-aware so presumably is no longer plugging the hole. MARCIA.) -what kind of distraction would work, though? I doubt toby'd use the Brown children as bait. Titania cares about Eira, so perhaps her? -then again if we kill off titania what in the world happens for the rest of the series. WHO is going to be a bigger bad than her. Maeve? Oberon? Theyre supposedly equals power-wise. It starts getting into DBZ territory if we go much further. -there's the implication about dangerous unknowable horrors in the sealed realms so we might go with that, but it would be a departure from Faerie lore. Probably. And McGuire's Incryptid series kinda just did the cosmic horror thing. -iirc Annwn wasn't that terrifying but it IS the only deep realm we've seen. -absolute crack theory: annwn gets unsealed and Riordan comes out but the unknowable horrors have transformed her into... the NEW big bad (this is a joke). Fifteen -oh wow this is the first time tybalt's had much bite in a long time. He's mostly been the trophy boyfriend/husband for a few books lmao -and that's it for that -an Observation I'd like to make is both the Queens are associated with roses. But Oberon really isn't; drinking his blood banishes their aroma at this part. Yet the only Firstborn we know of who is descended directly from JUST Oberon (+ a human) has prominent roses in her magic signature (Amandine). Why is that? -the "oops, all infiltrators" line genuinely got me. That was fucking funny. -MENTIONED DEAN AGAIN. Sixteen -can I just say the minor "Stacy is weird about her kids dating and a couple of them are Seers somehow, which is rare enough to beggar belief" detail turning into THIS, and SELLING IT, was quite a fucking feat. -back to the "Stacy is a separate entity" thing. I guess she's both but the whole "she never existed" thing being tossed around is so contradictory -a liminal state? I guess that's a good way to describe it -nice callback to the confirmation that Maeve is alive that I cited on the crazy wall earlier. -THE LINE "She's alive. She's just not showing her face right now." I am going to scream -like Faerie would be out of balance if Titania were freed. Specifically because Maeve is MIA -Maeve, if you're out there, literally nothing would be funnier than revealing it this book *stares at Marcia* -"she's probably somewhere nearby" you are taking the piss at this point -God Oberon you sure are a dick -oberon: *makes a bunch of problems* how could destiny do this to me -yup here's the setup for "the next big threat". Please don't dbz on us -i like the weather report metaphor to explain why the Three obscure prophecy -gosh we need SOME way to NOT KILL TITANIA but ALSO keep the Browns alive. Are we really doing this is it happening -a little disturbed by the implication that a Dochas Sidhe could destroy the Shadow Roads given enough power and determination -so the fact that magical constructs can become self aware under the right conditions (the knowes, Roads, etc) comes up enough that I think it's going to be Very Relevant soon. I wonder if it has something to do with the larger threat this book alludes to -i think oberons blood probably draws on life energy which is why Toby is so hungry.   Eighteen -quentin still at Muir Woods o_o -oh Sylvester is fucking painting a red shirt on. Good fucking god, man. -I like him disliking Titania despite her being his ancestor tho lmao -is it actually Sylvester on the cover and not Simon? She compelled Sylvester to stab Simon and they're twins, genetically identical... right? And it's not because he's been compelled before (by Evening) because so has Tybalt. And he's not immune to compulsion itself (see Evening again). So what gives -unless there's something fucky with Simon specifically. But we know he's Daoine Sidhe because August was half Daoine Sidhe. -HMMM. -the Luidaeg would have LEFT THE BROWN CHILDREN TO DIE in book three if she'd known they were Titania's kids.. She says it and she can't lie. Yikes. I’m actually planning on making posts on this topic later on so I’m gonna share the basic premise of the UMs for now!

Rosa’s UM is called “Heart’s Desire” and it allows her to change her appearance however she wants, though it requires some practice if she wants to try species other than her own.

Blanche’s UM is “The More, The Merrier” and she can use it to duplicate objects. It only works on inanimate objects however, and she can at this point only make about 7 duplicates before the quality drastically deteriorates. 

Marcia’s is called “Reforged Titan”, and it means she can coat her skin in an extremely hard substance that prevents her from sustaining any injuries. The UM typically coats her whole body, but lately she’s been training to limit it to only certain body parts.

June’s UM is “Overcharge” and it allows her to release high voltages of electricity from her body. It seems that the angrier she gets the more powerful the electrical discharge will be.

Diana’s UM is called “Song of the Wild” and it allows her to imitate any sound that she has heard. These can range from animal noises to human voices, but the restriction is that she must have come in contact with it one way or another at some point.

Cass’ UM is “Thy Fate Is!” and it allows her to look into a very specific point in a person’s future. The more exact the point in time is, the clearer she’s able to see the outcome. 

Agatha’s UM is “Soul Bonds” and it allows her to cover her skin in brightly glowing and intricate tattoos. She can make the patterns whatever she desires and since they barely consume any Magic she can keep them on for as long as she wants.

Vita’s UM is “Dread Presence” and it allows her to induce a state of complete fear into whoever is within her sight. The state may include hallucinations and could even lead to passing out due to fear. Her UM is actually detailed more here!

I’m going to go into the big tent for a moment and become a clown 🤡 and indulge in the idea of “what if how Gerri and Roman survive dickpicgate is they fake a relationship?” 

I’m still not sure if that would really work, but damn if this article did at least sort of persuade me. But let’s be real I am easy to persuade right now because I don’t want the dream team broken up 😭

But along with the other arguments they make one thing I would add is that episode 8 (and really the whole series) kind of showed us examples of other people with lesser status marrying or partnering with the Roys in order to gain status and wealth. 

Caroline is marrying Peter Munion who is clearly a social climber, and it seems that their relationship is based on an agreement between the two and is pretty transactional. 

Connor wants to marry Willa in the hopes that will legitimatize their relationship for his political campaign despite it being clear that eventually people are going to find out about Willa’s past as a sex worker. While she does seem to be gaining some more affection for him, it still seems clear that finances are the reason why she’s with him. If she chooses to marry him, it will be a transaction. 

Tom is the most obvious example of a social climber that clung to a Roy family member. He’s been envying wealthy people like the Roys for much of his life and desperately wanting to be a part of it. Tom gets the wealth and status of being a Roy and Shiv gets to feel powerful and protected in the knowledge that Tom will take her mistreatment and indifference and therefore never hurt her. 

It’s brief but we see Marcia who has become less of Logan’s most trusted companion and now a partner who simply gets financial rewards and presents herself as Logan’s socially appropriate public partner. We’re given ideas about Marcia’s past that she grew up quite poor. 

And also, I hate to say it but both Marcia and Tom have been hurt and humiliated by their Roy partners and yet they’ve always returned because they don’t want to give up their wealth and status. (Granted, for Tom it’s also his feelings for Shiv but that’s at least part of it.) Unfortunately, Roman and Gerri would be another example to add to that list. Gerri would be more of a Marcia type though, let’s be real, and be a boss ass bitch getting what she deserves and not taking Roman’s shit. 

A common theme in Gerri and Roman’s partnership has been the emphasis that just Roman’s status as a Roy is a huge benefit to Gerri. It allows him to shield her. Roman knows Gerri craves more status and power, but she knows she can’t do it without the help of a Roy. While it would be understandable for Gerri to refuse to work with Roman anymore, she also likely knows she’s more vulnerable without him. He’s a loose canon, yes and that’s what got them into this mess, but he’s also the only ally she has. 

Let’s be real, Roman and Gerri were never going to get into a relationship with each other because of love. That basically doesn’t exist in Succession or at the very least not in a pure sense. Every marriage is a transaction, and every marriage is really about wealth and status in this world. Granted, Gerri and Roman do have great affection for each other but, if they do partner up for real, it will be more of a business arrangement. 

I’m not convinced the Roman and Gerri thing will be resolved in the finale, but hey until then I’m going to live in this dream where Roman and Gerri don’t separate lol.

Succession S2E1 Thoughts

Some thoughts under the cut. 

Overall impression: 

Everyone was despicable, with a few exceptions (Greg, Marcia, Gerry, Willa, Kendall, that might be it?). I continue to be amazed at how fucked up all those kids are. My sympathies definitely lie primarily with Kendall, at least for now. The rest of the Roys are terrible, disgusting people--and they hardly deserve to be called people, they just lack so much humanity. Even Tom's blatant self-interest, perhaps even more obvious than ever, made my sympathies for him fall a bit. Don't get me wrong--it's an incredibly written, gorgeously shot, beautifully directed, and well-acted show. Speaking of those technical elements, it's probably the best show being made right now. But...you know, if it weren't for my sympathies for Kendall and general love of Greg and the fact that Matthew Macfadyen's gorgeous, talented self appears in it, I probably wouldn't watch it. It's so hard to watch sometimes, and I can't bring myself to root for a good 98% of the characters. I hope they get to experience some highly unpleasant consequences at some point in the series. That's probably the only thing that would make the content--the story itself--worth it for me. It's also very difficult to watch as an American, knowing what has been happening in my country and how this show portrays at least parts of that. But, hey, that being said, I'll continue to watch and wait for the Tom & Greg scenes. *grin* 

Moment by moment thoughts as I watched: 

Yeah, I like Kendall. He is, for me, the only truly sympathetic Roy. He's just the only one I actually like. I want to wrap him up in a hug.

Because that sounds a hell of a lot more like her and Roman, for that matter, than Kendall. Jesus.

It's so sad that, at the idea of "speaking freely" Shiv immediately finds open communication suspect. It's not her fault--this is the environment she's lived in her whole life. But the way Logan has warped his kids and how they perceive, well, everything, is so fucking awful. He's made them such shitty, distrustful people. 

Again, Kendall is by far the best Roy. He can sometimes be...you know, a human being. Of course, he immediately gets blasted for it, but at least it's there.  

Memory lane is illuminating and I hope we get to take more walks on it.

I sometimes can't quite get over how toxic this whole family is. 

Damn, seriously, Logan fucked up his kids so much. Shiv’s inability to believe her own father is speaking openly and not fucking with her is...really quite sad. It’s also sad that the behavior is ingrained in her so much that she does the same thing as naturally to other people as breathing, but ugh, sad that she ended up so fucked up. 

Oh, Tom. My sympathy for you is dropping. He really can't ask about anything but himself as soon as Shiv is out of that pow wow with Dad. 

If you're disgusted by how Logan treated the contractor...that's basically what Trump did to contractors. Except without...the raccoons.

Toby's narration: this hurt on a personal level because she can't lie so i knew she like REALLY meant it

-ok so theres this weird bit where we learn Stacy is ultra protective of her kids dating. There is some discussion about how that is super weird and doesn't make any sense to toby. Then some more discussion about how a lot of Stacy's past doesn't add up. Specifically, stacy's grandparents were purebloods (who hated her), which actually makes zero sense biologically considering how little fae blood Stacy has. Also worth considering, though not mentioned, TWO of stacy's children are powerful seers which makes no sense from what we know about thin blood in canon.

I think this *might* connect to my ongoing suspicions of Marcia as a character, who is a thinblooded changeling who consistently keeps showing up. Including in this book when she really didn't need to. At this point she has met multiple Firstborn and they initially seem alarmed/disturbed when they see her for no apparent reason. 14 books since her intro and we know nothing about her past or even her heritage, which is unheard of in this series. When that kind of info is obscured its always because there's a big twist associated with it. There is something going on there.

I immediately went and skimmed the two books he was in and caught two instances of foreshadowing.

In Ashes of Honor (#6) when toby meets him she describes him as familiar in a generic way. Like, she recognizes his voice and face immediately but can't place it.. This is never brought up again. In the final chapter of this book he is described the same way, as generic yet strangely familiar. So. A closer reading might be in order to see how other fae behave around him. It's possible Toby has a stronger reaction since he's her grandfather (and is the perspective character.)

And yeah, the fucking THROWAWAY "lady, let alone" line from The Brightest Fell (#11). At the time that just seemed awkward, or I guess a gratuitous Tam Lin reference. Fuck me. Also explains how he didnt implode or die from being trapped in Annwn.

-and it makes sense there isnt much more than that because it seems "officer thornton" doesnt know he's oberon. Like it's basically the situation Simon was in??? There's a throwaway "why in the world was Oberon disguised as a human and couldn't remember anything?" line but it isn't explored, so I assume its addressed in a future book.

-(oh my god Riordan kept him as like. Some sick pet. For a YEAR. she didn't know he was the literal King of Faerie. Fucking hell.)

-his fucking name. Thornton. THORNton. Perfectly human character here hahahaha fuck off.

-and this makes the whole fucking series setup of "toby will be the one to find oberon" way more funny because. Man, mission fucking accomplished. 8 books ago.

-thematically makes sense that he returns in The Brightest Fell, too. Fuck me. fuck me! Bitter irony that Simon is given the impossible task/curse to find Oberon in that book and he was literally like, zonked out two rooms away

-list of "minor/background" characters in this series who later reveal themselves to be Huge Lore Gamechangers: Evening, The Luidaeg, May, August, Janet, and now FUCKING Oberon.

Well umm, hope you like this cuz this is pretty long. I super love these books, and I have thoughts lol. (Also: Projection? In my HCs? It's more likely than you think)

Jenna: ADHD & Anxiety

ADHD: 

she is generally very restless. Jenna never really is into just chilling with stuff. Often being the one to initiate doing things. Likes to stay busy even if it’s just walking through the halls of her palace or tending to the horses.

she can hyperfocus on things sometimes. We can see this when she’ll focus on things, like Maricas shoes in book one and kind of zone out when they walk and the stars outside her window.  In the second book, she remembers the bones in the skeleton and is able to just do it all in one go.

She gets distracted easily normally though bouncing between doing things. And gets bored when people talk around her. Like sometimes being the second one to get annoyed with Stanley.

Hyperfixations. Like the Dragon Boat for a while, the Queen's’ Room and other things.

Usually pretty hi energy. And has pretty large outbursts with her emotions even when trying to keep them under control. Kind of goes along I think with her kind of being described as one of the boys and a lot like her brothers in comparison to other kids. (I got called a tomboy a lot for my not liking sitting still and yes please I will play in the mud lol)

She stims some and doesn’t like not being able to. Comes up when she is trying to be unemotional or is told to play Queen.

Some impulsive behaviour. But even sometimes with more silly stuff as well.

Anxiety: In the later books, we see she can start to ruminate on things. On top of that, she starts to be a bit more cautious about things. Stuff that reminds her of previous stress is more powerful, not to the extent of PTSD like symptoms but it is noticeable. She also experiences anxiety in the run-up to having to make large decisions becoming more overwhelmed. I also think we see in the last to books some sympathy with sep who used to confuse her with his anxiety (like in Syren)

Mandy Marwick: C-PTSD & Selective Mutism

C-PTSD: 

Hypervigilant all the time. Down to the way he sleeps. 

Has identity confusion, kind of picking up new personalities around where he is. Reckless to his own detriment. Easily agitated. Struggles to form relationship really thrive where he can have more simple relationships. 

Also just like the young army, like Septimus he can sometimes slip back into the cations in relation to the young army.

Checks out possible dissociation may be related. He also shuts down in general in response to his emotions turning stress inward. He can even check out as a bit of a survival tool. This helps when he goes to see the Port Witch Coven.

Selective Mutism: He is just literally selectively mute, can talk but doesn’t under most circumstances. Doesn’t talk much, some people haven’t ever heard him talk. Being the most talkative with Septimus and then when necessary. And in Todd Hunter he is more talkative it seems especially with his boyfriend Sam Heap. 

Nicko Heap: PTSD & Depression

Well with this I’m mostly looking post-House of Foryx. It’s explicitly stated he is very different from when he left, never goes completely back but overtime is able to adjust back to home.

He had a lot of trouble reintegrating to things. Has become more passive in a sense, I think slowing down unable to do things and interact with his family the way he used to. Describes being tired, so  I think fatigue could be present.

Struggles to enjoy anything like he used to, even though he still likes boats he doesn’t get the same excitement we see in the early books more searching for peace.

His relationship with Snorri also is strained for a bit because they both feel so disconnected from everything. Preoccupied thoughts with the trauma too.

Sarah Heap: Anxiety and Depression

I think her anxiety is brought on when her very specific way of life in the Ramblings is disturbed and a mother of 7 is turned into really only being mother to 1 kid (Jenna) and even the kid still in the same general lace is essentially never been her kid and is mostly raised by someone else. This disruption caused this I believe. Flyte really describes this and we see it worsen anytime her kids is missing for long periods of time.

Ruminates on her kids and what they might be doing.  was shown to be irritable but in a way more reminiscent of anxious breakdown then anger when fighting with Silas. Obsessively, mothers, the duck Jenna brings back. Struggles anytime things she tries to use to manage stress (like her garden)

Depression: Shown to be very emotional often crying and showing signs of despair. Sometimes feels a bit secondary and useless/helpless when her skills around herbal medicine are not applicable and she really has the pertinent info to her kids' problems. This triggers hopelessness.

Has trouble keeping things clean, borderline hoarding behaviour. Observed in her sitting room.

Isolates from others. Seeming to only see her own family rarely out of her control, but when there is not a major problem like an illness or siege she tends to stay away from most people.

Simon Heap: BPD

BPD:

Deeply insecure needing outside validation and hates rejection and abandonment. This fear tears him up and fuels his worse choices.

Dangerous/Risky behaviour is common. I think his ability to hold his breath underwater is a Darke skill we see used in the port and later in the Todd Hunter books. But to have this and other of his Darke skill they would be practised.  We also see this in being willing to do bad dangerous things like pick fights with extraordinary wizards, neutral things like ride his horse way to fast. use half a flyte charm and use magic that is dangerous/draining/Darke for himself to protect the castle.

Unstable identity looks for a new one a few times when the perception of perfect wizard falls he become full-blown dark wizard breaking ties with his family, this breaks moves to the port tries to be something else but still not really a heap again, then alchemy apprentice and reunites become a family man (later even having his son). This also can be unstable goals after his fixated one is broken.

Volatile and hot relationships. Even his consistent relationship with lucy can be read as dramatic and volatile

Very dramatic emotional reactions, big mood swings. Also very reactive emotional states. Including anger

Is capable of long term planning to get his goal but still acts impulsively very often when his emotion are rilled up. Like joining Dom Daniel in the first place as a huge example.

Depressive symptoms and moods

Splits on people. Jenna, his Parents, and Septimus. Even picking a fight with Sleuth and his horse to some extent.

Lucy is his favourite person

Snorri Snorrelssen: Anxiety

Anxiety:

She definitely ruminates on things and can get stuck in one thought pattern.

She also scripts and will plan out what she is going to do

really doesn't like it when life doesn't go as planned, the seen in sally Mullins is so relatable TBH my poor girl.

Shows similar worsening problems with communicating and interacting after the house of Foryx to Nicko. Seeming even more disconnected and stressed out, Snorri even seeks to return home.

Ullr is a comfort animal. Having the magic ability of synching thoughts, but more commonly she plays off her cat to feel more in control and power. Even just his warmth and presence. She is very sad when they are separated but tells Ullr to work with Jenna.

Is on edge a whole lot in connection to being able to see hidden ghosts. Feels like she has to constantly watch everything she is doing.  

Syrah Syara: C-PTSD & Dissociation

C-PTSD: experience distress at reminders of her trauma. Relates well to sep but not the others. Shows clear signs of anxiety even when not possessed. Definitely shows feelings of helpless earned from her captivity. Has breakdowns.

Dissociation is way more of just a fan theory. I think her memories are not totally gone but a factor of dissociation. This might be more projection but I think the possession played a role in this with trauma. When the stuff with the syren and all of that happen her mind tried to deal with it all by dissociating. So I think it is possible she could remember the stuff. Also just she is relatable so yeah.

Silas: Dyslexia

Rosalia Morgainne: Aline’s dismissive attitude of Rosa as a Prefect would make their relationship quite difficult at the beginning. Rosa already struggles with not being taken seriously and being referred to as ‘doll’ would make her feel like she’s still caught in the shadows of ‘Cherry’ and treated like a child. She wants her dorm mates to take her seriously, which is why she tries to act like a grown-up and Aline’s attitude towards her would be a constant reminder of how much she’s failing at that particular endeavour. She’d try to impose herself before her with little success, but I think it would only make things worse since Rosa is just acting out the part rather than actually believing it.  

“Dumont-senpai? She’s... well, she’s my senior and such relationships must be respected.”

Blanche Dion: Serious and responsible as always, Blanche would disapprove of Aline’s more frivolous tendencies, but because she takes seniority quite seriously she wouldn’t comment on it. The doll comments make her feels rather uncomfortable too because it reminds her too much about what her mother expects her to be when compared to her siblings.  

“Hah... I wonder if I can get her mother to sponsor me? Being a big brand and all that has to have its advantages financially, right?”

Marcia Pyroeis: Not one to lose any opportunity, Marcia would have boldly approached Aline during her first year to attempt to secure a sponsorship from her since she’s always trying to scout a sponsor. She’s easy to get along with so Marcia would ignore Aline’s tendency to call people ‘doll’ in order to remain on her good side.  

“Reminds me of the ghoul too much, that one... creepy lot, ugh.”

June Himalia: Though they’re in the same year, since Aline is in the same class as Vita they don’t really have many opportunities for interaction since June avoids that classroom like the plague. Since Aline comes from a well-off family, June thinks of her as just another rich kid who doesn’t know much about back-breaking hard work. Moreover, she usually sees Rosenhex students as frivolous and superficial so she rarely bothers approaching them.

“...Strife within the herd is often fatal.”  

Diana Arrow: Diana keeps away from things that do not concern her directly, so she would be merely content to observe Aline whenever the two interacted. Her odd tendencies would interest Diana only in the sense that she sees it as challenging Rosa’s authority. She’s a big believer in pack unity within the dorm, so seeing such blatant disrespect towards a Prefect would give her pause. 

“Um, Miss Dumont is certainly a character, isn’t she?”

Cassandra Delphinne: They’re both members of the Photography club so she’s somewhat familiar with Aline. She finds her a bit intimidating, not only due to her height, and generally tries not to get her attention too much. The ‘doll’ nickname confuses her quite a bit, and she isn’t sure if it’s supposed to be a compliment or a thinly-veiled insult meant to unnerve her. Regardless, she’s usually quite nervous in her company, though also tries to be respectful and polite.  

“Rosenhex... whether Prefect... or student... they’re all... the same... annoying...”

Agatha Voisin: Agatha has an overall poor view of Rosenhex students due to their preoccupation with physical appearance and because most of them conform to the standard definition of ‘cute’. Aline’s tendency to call people ‘cute dolls’ would irk her quite a bit because she would instantly assume she’s mocking her. Agatha does find amusement in seeing Aline ‘bully’ Rosa however, since she feels like the latter deserves it.

“Mm, the little one is rather excitable, isn’t she? Still, this much is to be expected of Rosenhex witches.”

Vita Dies: As classmates and seat neighbours, the two end up in the other’s company quite a lot, so Vita is free to witness Aline’s personality changes, She finds it quite amusing to see people fall for the ‘Big Sister’ act she puts on and is content to merely watch things go along at their pace. She sometimes gets to see Aline ‘bully’ Rosa which satisfies her need for chaos and disfunction, and might even occasionally join in to troll her as well.

Okay so here’s a list of my favorite stuff (**will update) :

Biographies 

- The Joan Kennedy Story : Living with the Kennedys, by Marcia Chellis (1985) : Marcia was Joan’s personal assistant for 2-3 years, starting in 1979. They went through the 1980 presidential campaign together. I know Joan felt betrayed by the book saying : “I tried to talk her out of it three years ago when she told me the notes she took on the 1980 campaign would be used in a book. I told her I felt so betrayed. I think it’s a real breach of confidentiality” - but I gotta say, it’s really great if you want to feel like an insider. It’s a must-read, in my opinion. But I don’t agree with how she did all of this - Joan was her friend and she trusted her but she ended up betraying her for money… yeah. - Jackie, Ethel, Joan : The Women of Camelot, by J. Randy Taraborrelli (2000) : “Three women who married into America’s royal family and became forever linked in legend. Randy Taraborrelli (2012) : Taraborrelli’s books tend to be a bit on the gossipy side, but I kinda like his style lol plus he does A LOT of research for his books (the source notes are always like, 40 pages long). The book is divided into the following parts : The lengthy an detailed tome is divided into the following parts: Jackie, Eunice, Sarge, Ted, Ethel, Jackie/Ari/The Lawfords, Sargent Tries Again, The Third Generation In Trouble, Poor Ari, Rosemary and Rose, Shriver for President, Ted’s 1980 campaign, David’s Story, Kennedy Upheaval, Caroline/John/Maurice, William Kennedy Smith and the Palm Beach Scandal, Kennedy Wives Old and New, Jackie: Her Final Years, John and Carolyn, Michael’s Story, A Peaceful Time, Camelot Loses its Prince, Transitions, and Looking Ahead. - Peter Lawford : The Man Who Kept the secrets, by James Spada (1991). (See the review that I made about a week ago). - Joan : The Reluctant Kennedy, by Lester David (1974) : It’s really interesting because he interviewed her a lot for it and you can learn about her childhood, her girlhood, etc. It’s really the only book that is strictly dedicated to her (well Marcia Chellis’ book kinda is too, but it’s more like a tell all, not a biography and it only talks about Joan’s life from 1979 to 1983). The only thing is that since the book was published in the 70s, it doesn’t cover the rest of Joan’s life. - The Other Mrs. Kennedy : Ethel Skakel Kennedy - An American Drama of Power, Privilege, and Politics, by Jerry Oppenheimer (1994). I didn’t think I’d be into this book at first, since I’ve never been particularly interested in Ethel. But it really is a page turner. - The Last Brother, by Joe McGinnis (1993). Excellent book about Ted. I really enjoyed the fact that there is no ass kissing at all (compared to the ‘Last Lion’, published by the Boston Globe). It really reveals the dysfunctionality of the family. I also like how he analyzes Ted, he’s very interesting, psychologically-speaking, cause he was trapped from the beginning: someone (…Joe Kennedy) chose a life path for him and that was it. The Washington Post trashed the book but don’t listen to them lol- The Kennedy Curse, by Edward Klein. (2003)

It’s 8 episodes and it starts with JFK’s election and ends with JFK’s assassination. Greg Kinnear is excellent as JFK, and so is Barry Pepper as Bobby. As for Katie Holmes, sometimes she’s good and sometimes it’s a bit cringy (like when she tries to imitate Jackie’s soft, breathy voice). The new series, The Kennedys : After Camelot (which covers from 1964 to the 1990s I believe), based on J. Randy Taraborrelli’s book, will start in April on Reelz
