Simply put, Minneapolis did not defund the police. It’s the opposite. The police are defunding Minneapolis.
How? Well, first there are the costly settlements from the violence the police committed: $27 million for George Floyd’s family; $2.4 million for protester Soren Stevenson; $650,000 for journalist Linda Tirado. Tirado and Stevenson both have an eyeball missing as a result of the police firing so called “less lethal” rubber-coated steel bullets at them during protests. There is $1.5 million for Jaleel Stallings, a Black army veteran who was hit by a less-lethal round from MPD officers riding around in an unmarked van five days after Floyd’s murder. Under the impression it was a real bullet, Stallings fired a real gun in self defense. He was beaten by the cops and charged with attempted murder only to be acquitted on all charges. His friend Virgil Lee Jackson Jr., who was with him and beaten and tased for two minutes, also received a $645,000 settlement. The total is staggering. An actuarial study by the city in 2021 estimated that legal claims made in the fifteen days after Floyd’s murder would lead to Minneapolis paying out $111 million in lawsuit settlements.
Then, there is the cost of the police officers themselves. Nearly 300 officers have left the department since Floyd’s murder, over one third of the force. Over 200 have left with workers’ compensation settlement checks and lucrative disability pensions, based on claims that policing the protests gave them post-traumatic stress disorder. Are these civil servants reaping the benefits of hard-won public-sector labor protections after bravely fulfilling their duty? Or is this a permanent version of what labor organizers would call a “sick out”?
Either way, some of these cops are getting generous retirement packages (costing the city money) after a career of complaints (costing the city money). One officer racked up more than $344,000 in misconduct settlements over the course of 12 years. He’s now receiving $56,000 a year in disability pension, on top of $195,000 in a workers comp settlement, according to records reviewed by Winter. Another officer—one of five involved in the 2013 SWAT Team killing of a Black man named Terrance Franklin (after new reporting by Time the case has undergone renewed scrutiny)—is making more than $128,000 a year on disability pension, on top of $195,000 in his workers’ comp settlement. Those officers who fired at Stallings from an unmarked van, and fractured his eye socket? Three of them are getting a combined $22,000 a month in disability pension for the trauma inflicted upon them.
Since Floyd’s murder, Minneapolis has paid more than $23 million in workers’ compensation settlements to police officers, according to the Star Tribune. Ronald Meuser, an attorney representing 200 MPD officers (a large portion of which he says were inside the 3rd Precinct station, and were forced to flee the building before the station eventually was set on fire by protesters), estimates that the city will eventually pay out $35 million dollars.
This is a great deal of money. The combination of these payouts and police misconduct settlements is approaching $150 million dollars. That’s more than three fourths of what the MPD’s budget was in 2020. The city’s self-insurance fund, which it uses to pay out settlements, is expected to be at negative 94 million dollars by the end of 2022.

crazy good medical knowledge, which I've mentioned before lmao. dosages, different medicines, cpr, advanced life support, suturing, intubation? he knows all that and more.
fluently speaks three entirely different languages, which is surprising when you take to account how dumb he portrays himself to be, and even messes up his english sometimes.
... he technically knows how to play the violin, but if you treasure your life, don't ask him about it.

maybe not too surprising, but the birthdays of every club member, past and present.
besides knowing all her motorcycle brands, makes, and models, she's adept at telling horse breeds apart as well.
also, most people don't expect her to be as good of a fighter that she is, only the club people. just because there aren't any black belts or whatever doesn't mean she couldn't 1v1 someone in a ring and win. she has such vast knowledge about different fighting styles, disciplines, professional moves... just no medals to show for it.

looking at them, you would never expect them to know how to hack into things. but they do, frequently, with great success.
while they recently learned to shoot a gun, not many people know that they're super nerdy on archery and can name so many different bows and little fun facts about them.
somehow also knows how to manipulate people, which is so weird when you look at their little cherub face. useful against cops though.

they do know how to let loose, okay? they know how to relax. they do, i promise. (skeptic eyebrows raised all over the precinct, i can feel it)
aside from that, great gardening knowledge. if they had a bigger yard (and any free time), they could live off it for eternity.
surprise of the century! they know how to drive a motorcycle. they just don't want to. or talk about it. usually just lies about not knowing how to drive one.

while they're a superstar on a superbike, they also know how to fly a helicopter. not that they have a need to do it by themselves, but of the need arises, they got you.
they know a lot of... things. about people, mostly powerful people, and they are a master of blackmail of they put their mind to it. usually they don't though, a bit too detached from humanity like that.
as mysterious as they are, they do know how to... drumroll please... bake. yeah. not just pot brownies either, but real good recipes. that's a fact no one knows about them. (usually they just bake treats for their cats because humans are judgemental)

Jenny: pov after lunch i decided to hang around a bit me and Ryan wanted to ask Kate and Castle something. We want them to be the baby's godparents. We already picked the other godparents since we are picking two sets. Since Esposito and Lanie are Sarah Grace's godparents it was decided Kate and Castle would be this baby's godparents.
Kate: pov Ryan says he and Jenny need to talk to me and Castle, it must be important. Ryan, do you want to talk in my office or the breakroom? He suggested my office. I tell Jenny to be careful. Castle just scraped the slime off my couch, which he dropped.
Jenny: pov who's slime was it. Kate says Castle's. He says it's not his fault it was too slippery.
Kate: pov it is your fault Castle you made it. What did you want to talk about Jenny.
Ryan: pov we want you and Castle to be the baby's second set of godparents, Jenny already told her family members who is going to be the other godparents. Since we want two sets just in case.
Castle: pov Kate gets back to work while I get some writing done on my computer which I brought with me.
Kate: pov I'm very honored that Jenny and Ryan picked me and Castle as one of the sets of godparents for the baby. My cousin Sophia is calling me on the phone and wants to know if I want to get food or drinks with her and her boyfriend later. He wants to meet me since I'm her only cousin. Sophia, how much does he know about me? She says that you're a homicide Captain and that your mother was murdered. I didn't go into details. It wasn't my place, I'm not sure about this. I don't do well in tight spaces with large crowds like that. She convinces me to come. should I bring Castle or not, not sure if your boyfriend wants to meet him. We make plans for after work. Me and Castle will stop at the loft beforehand to get dressed.
Castle: pov I got a good amount of writing done. I can hear Kate on the phone with someone she says they have a body drop. She walks out into the bullpen to tell Esposito and Ryan they have a body. It is also decided I'm getting dropped off at the loft since it's on the way to her crime scene. I’m so disappointed that I can't go with them or stay at the precinct but my leg is still not 100 percent.
Lanie: pov the body is a white male possibly Russian and 5ft 8 cause of death looks like stab wounds. There is a trail of blood leaving the crime scene. The boys are checking the crime scene for any evidence. I need to get this body back to the morgue. In his back pocket is a baggie with some white looking powder in it. Esposito says he will test it but more than likely it's drugs.
Esposito: pov so far I have found no useful evidence, the blood trail eventually ends. Besides what Lanie found on the dead guy. On the floor is a piece of paper with the name Illvan Kravitz and a time and meeting place. Hmm I wonder what this could be about
Kate: pov if this is about drugs and the guy was Russian, we have to be careful. Our best evidence is what Esposito found. Since I speak Russian it might be better if I make the meeting while Ryan looks up Illvan Kravitz. Esposito, do you want to, canvas for witnesses to see if anyone saw anything.
Esposito: pov sure boss, do you need backup for the meeting? She says I'm going to ask the guy from the drug unit to help, he speaks Russian just in case it's needed. See you later.
Kate: pov I call the captain of the drug unit. It turns out his officer, who is Russian, got injured recently while working undercover. Just great I guess I can ask the guy from the gang unit. I head to the precinct and hit the button on the elevator to take me to the gang units floor. Captain Fillion isn't busy at the moment so I head into his office after explaining my case to him. I ask if I can borrow one of his detectives. I know he speaks Russian. Illvan Kravitz is possibly our dead body or a suspect and this case likely has to do with drugs. If we pretend to be Russian drug dealers and not cops we might get more info out of the guy. I don't know what the drug unit did wrong to get their officer injured.
Captain Fillion: pov I call the officer in question into my office and ask him if he is willing to help Captain Kate Beckett out, he says sure. His name is Nicholas (Nick) Stephen McSwarek.
Officer Nicholas (Nick) Stephen McSwarek: pov the meeting is for 5 o'clock, Captain Kate Beckett thinks we should use my truck that way it would look less suspicious. The drive isn't too long. There is a box of snacks in the back if you want something.
Kate: pov I say no thanks. Instead of saying I can't have that type of snack, I don't want him worrying about me. He finds a parking spot and we get out, some man is walking towards us and he looks scary. The guy asks what we are doing here. A guy gave us this note earlier, me and Nick are new to this area, been In the drug business for over 15 years in a different state, needed a fresh new start plus we're running from the law back home and we were involved in a shootout that didn't end well. My name is Stana and this is Grieg, my husband and business partner. Looks like he is buying our story and sets up a meeting for tomorrow to discuss business. To be continued. …….

MEXICO CITY -- The ruling party of Mexico's President Andrés Manuel López Obrador won the governorship of the country's most populous state, dealing a life-threatening blow to the old ruling Institutional Revolutionary Part y — or PRI — which had governed the State of Mexico without interruption for nearly a century.
With over 99% of precincts counted in a preliminary report, electoral authorities said Monday that Morena's Delfina Gómez won 52.7% of votes in the State of Mexico — which surrounds Mexico City on three sides — to 44.3% for the PRI's Alejandra del Moral.
Del Moral later gave a concession speech acknowledging her defeat.
The result was a new low for the PRI, which held Mexico's presidency uninterrupted for 71 years until losing power in 2000 elections; the party had governed the State of Mexico and its 17 million inhabitants for 94 years until its loss Sunday.
The PRI managed to hold on to the governorship of the sparsely populated northern border state of Coahuila, and governs the neighboring state of Durango in coalition with other opposition parties. But the PRI is now a shadow of the old days when it ruled Mexico with a combination of hand-out programs and corruption.
PRI party leader Alejandro Moreno said Monday that speculation about the PRI's demise was wrong and that the party would survive, but as part of a broad opposition coalition of left, right and center groups that will seek to field an alliance candidate in the presidential elections a year from now.
“Elections are won with total votes across the country, not with governorships,” Moreno said, although state governments in Mexico historically have been a base to mobilize power and cash that can play a key role in federal elections.
Morena now governs 22 of Mexico’s 32 states, propelled by López Obrador's personal popularity — and more generous payments to the elderly and students than the PRI offered. The conservative National Action party governs five states, the Morena-allied Green party governs one and the small Citizens Movement holds two states.
López Obrador said he was pleased with the results, but struck a magnanimous tone Monday, saying his administration would deal fairly with governors from all parties.
“We have to serve all citizens, whatever party they belong to, that is our responsibility,” the president said.
Gómez celebrated her victory as the first woman to serve as governor in the State of Mexico.
“This is a victory for working families, this is a victory for us women, who have fought for years for the recognition of our rights,” Gómez said in a victory speech late Sunday. The state has been plagued by a bloody series of killings of women in recent years, and widespread poverty among female-headed households.
The State of Mexico covers everything from Mexico City suburbs, industrial sprawl and rural communities plagued by violence, and displays stunning extremes of inequality, violence and corruption.
The contest was closely watched, too, because of its potential implications for next year’s presidential elections. Even without having selected its nominee yet, Morena is considered the frontrunner in that national election and will be even more so with control of the State of Mexico.
Political scientist Georgina de la Fuente of the Tecnologico de Monterrey university noted that Sunday's results highlight several things: the PRI has been defeated, though perhaps not as soundly as expected; Morena is not invincible; and parties are going to have to reconfigure their agreements. She added that the smooth elections also confirmed the effectiveness of Mexico's electoral system, whose authorities had come under heavy fire from López Obrador.
The loss of the State of Mexico could spell the end of the PRI's political relevance on a national stage.
Turnout was only about half of eligible voters in the State of Mexico.
“It doesn't seem like the elections have excited” people, said Miguel Agustín López Moreno, a political scientist and social worker in Ecatepec, one of the state's largest municipalities. He was uncertain the situation for residents would change significantly, attributing the Morena party's success in large part to the amount of resources it invested in the state.
Adair Ortiz Herrera, a 21-year-old information systems student from Coyotepec, a rural area in the northern part of the state, said before the results were known Sunday that he was sure “a new direction” was coming. “My vote is to end the current government's hegemony,” he said.

The story of Capt. Abiel Packard

On this blog, I have briefly written about Capt. Abiel Packard, but mostly in passing. Pages 25 and 26 of Moses Cary's book, A Genealogy of the Families Who Have Settled in the North Parish of Bridgewater, which Mr. Dale Cook put online, describes him as follows:
[Abiel] lived where Captain Nathaniel Wales now lives; he m[arried]. an Ames, was a Captain in the militia, had eight s[on]s. Abiel [who died in his youth], Josiah [a militia captain who died in 1793 at age 70], Joshua [moved to the state of Maine], Thomas [had varying children], Timothy [died in 1780, age 48], Daniel [moved westward], Eliab [moved westward], and Benjamin [died 1808, aged 59]; and two d[aughter]s. Sarah, and Betsey. Sarah m[arries] Deacon Ebenezer Snell. Betsey m. Jacob Edson. Captain Abiel Packard was the greatest land-holder in the North Parish; he owned a thousand acres of land in one body, aud [sic] settled seven of his sons on the same. Captain Abiel Packard died 1776, aged 76.
However, there are some problems with this description. For one, his gravestone clearly lists him as dying in 1774, two years before the Revolutionary War began. Secondly, he is described on Find A Grave as "the son of Zaccheus and Sarah (Howard) Packard" and as marrying "Sarah Ames on January 11, 1722/23 in Bridgewater, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts." Only seven of his children are listed on Find A Grave, apart from his son Abiel, not the ten that Cary claims were the children of Abiel and Sarah. [1] One article in Access Genealogy, which misstates hid death date as 1776 adds to this narrative by noting that
Capt. Abiel Packard, the youngest child of Zaccheus and Sarah (Howard) Packard, was born April 29, 1699, in West Bridgewater, and later became one of the first settlers of the North Parish of Bridgewater, where he was engaged in farming, owning the land afterward known as the Capt. Nathaniel Wales place. He was the largest land owner in the neighborhood, having over one thousand acres in one tract, upon which he settled seven of his sons. He was a captain in the militia. He married Jan. 11, 1723, Sarah Ames, daughter of John and Sarah (Washburn) Ames, and they became the parents of ten children...[Abiel's] wife died in Bridgewater, in 1790, aged eighty-three years.
His birth date on Apr 25, 1699 is definitely confirmed, as I noted in a previous post.
With this, I looked at my entry for Abiel Packard, in which I said at the end that "due to the date of his death, he was NOT a famous captain in the Revolutionary War as some sources claim." I found, from this profile that Abiel, age 37, on December 31, 1736, signed a petition to the Massachusetts legislature (General Court), as an inhabitant of the Northern section of Bridgewater's "West Precinct," requesting to be a distinct township. [2] This shows where he was living at the time, along with the other nine Packards who signed the petition: David, David Jr., James, John, Jonathan, Seth, Solomon, William, and Zaccheus. Also, in that profile I cited Massachusetts, Marriages, 1633-1850 showing that Abiel married Deliverance Washburn on November 16, 1771 in Bridgewater, using the same resource to show he married Sarah Ames on January 11, 1723 in Bridgewater. I extracted information from Bradford Kingman's 1866 book, History of North Bridgewater, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, From its First Settlement to the Present Time with Family Registers, showing that he was a militia captain (originally he was ensign in 1762) with Issac Packard (pp 94, 201, 292-293 at most). [3] In the same book, I found that in 1750/51 he was a selectman (p 203), that he voted to furnish the meeting house and fund school on 15 Aug 1748 (pp 88, 113), with a number of votes concerning him in 1747 (p 112). I also found that for many years he was on the committee of the North Parish (p. 206), specifically 1746-1748, 1750, 1752, 1754, 1756-1758, 1760-1761, 1763-1769, that he sold pews in 1744 (pp 88, 113), and the same year paid a higher tax than David, Solomon, Deacon, Zachariah, Seth, William, Lydia (Widow), and Jacob Packard, possibly indicating that he owned more land than them (pp 211-212). Finally, the book also said that he helped, from 1739 to 1740, along with his brothers David and Solomon, to approve certain preachers, sell of pews, and other improvements to the local church (pp 20, 85), and that he was a treasurer of the North Parish from 1738-1743 and in 1762 (p 206).
If Kingman is right in his assessment than Abiel was an active churchgoer. Clearly he lived in Bridgewater for all of his life. Most importantly, were the original sources I cited on the profile. At age 24, he was mentioned in the dividing up of the estate of his father, Zaccheus Packard, who had died that year (1723). [4] Furthermore, he was mentioned in the inventory and division of his father's estate (all the people who sign it were Zaccheus's children) in May 1725, noting that Zaccheus died on August 3, 1723. He was also mentioned in the settling of the estate the same month, which was signed in the presence of Joseph Edson and Nathaniel Brett. The original documents, linked above, are posted below. Specifically focus on pages 74, 75, and 76, which have the information relating to Zaccheus Packard and his children surviving.

This shows he had nine children, not ten children as others claimed.
Later on, Massachusetts, Wills and Probate Records, 1635-1991 lists him as dying in 1774, and was buried in Brockton.
And that's all I'm writing on Abiel for now.

Ferdinand Marcos Jr set to become Philippines' 17th president
MANILA - After waiting for more than 30 years, Mr Ferdinand Marcos Jr is finally set to become the Philippines' 17th president.
By the early hours of Tuesday (May 10) morning, the 64-year-old son and namesake of the late dictator chalked up almost 30 million votes with over 94 per cent of the eligible ballots counted, surpassing the 27.5 million votes needed for a majority.
He earlier led his nearest rival, incumbent Vice-President Leni Robredo, 57, by an insurmountable 13.3 million by the time almost 45 million out of some 67 million cast votes had been counted hours after balloting closed in the presidential election on Monday.
Data analysts had said the trend pointed to Mr Marcos Jr ultimately getting between 27 million and 32 million votes. Ms Robredo would get 15 million at most, they said.
Mr Marcos Jr’s running mate, Ms Sara Duterte-Carpio, 43, daughter of outgoing President Rodrigo Duterte, is poised to become vice-president, with a lead of 18 million votes over second-placed Senator Kiko Pangilinan, 58, Ms Robredo’s running mate.
Monday night's results were in line with opinion polls that forecast a landslide win for both Mr Marcos Jr and Ms Duterte-Carpio.
Appearing on television just before midnight, Mr Marcos Jr thanked his supporters, but stressed that “it's not over till the final count”.
“Any endeavour as large as this does not involve one person. It involves very, very many people working in very, very many different ways. To all of them, I thank you,” he said.
Celebrating his inevitable win, his supporters cheered, shouted and danced to the marching song Bagong Lipunan (New Society) – the anthem of his father’s brutal, martial law experiment – at his campaign headquarters east of Manila.
Millions of voters swarmed their precincts even before polling started at 6am - queueing under the already searing morning sun for hours - to make sure their votes would count in what was seen as the most consequential and most contested election in Philippine in more than 30 years.
Ms Robredo's supporters had believed the gap was much narrower, citing the mammoth turnout in her political rallies, the fervour shown by her mostly young volunteers, and flaws in the surveys.
But "it was a big gap to close", said Mr Peter Mumford, lead analyst for South and South-east Asia at political risk consultancy Eurasia Group.
Monday's massive voter turnout early in the day reflected how ferociously fought this year's political contest had been, largely because of what the top two leading candidates represent.
Mr Marcos Jr styled himself as the "continuity candidate", one who would pursue Mr Duterte's policies, including his bloody drug war and rapprochement with China.
To critics, he represents the return to power of a political family that court records and historical accounts hold responsible for mass killings and institutionalised kleptocracy during the 20-year reign of his father that ended in 1986, when a military-backed civilian revolt forced the Marcoses to flee the Philippines.
