Hello!

Obligatory however-many-monthly post to say I am not dead and have all my usual intentions to Fandom, but am still dealing with a fucktonne of life shit, which includes but is not limited to:

a) Taking the National Disability Insurance Scheme to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal for my elder sister

b) Getting diagnoses and treatment for the younger sister (however pissed off, unwilling and downright effing nasty she acts toward everyone for everything)

c) Trying to get my own ducks in a row still (mental health and self-esteem ones mostly: they are ever-continuingly obstinate and refuse to do anything I demand of them), however I DID do a trial shift at an Opportunity Shop near me yesterday, so we’ll see how that goes. Got ten to trial and see if I want to stick with it but I was exhausted yesterday mentally and emotionally so who the hell knows??

Have a picture of the bag that took me a solid year to finish, (and am still adding sewn elements to as I use it more and more) but I am so happy with it!!

I’m slowly working on teaching myself to knit and aiming to learn crochet too (and have fallen headlong down the hole that is learning to sew on a machine) so I am doing things that get me talking to people in the “real” world, but THAT is an ever-changing balancing act that I still don’t understand at 30. (It is so very, very frustrating.)

I am moving onto a rainbow blanket next, queen size; lord help me. Therefore, please also see my tentative ‘plan’ for how I want it to look, courtesy of someone who has never written a knitting pattern ever and knows full well this is NOT one of them. 😂

Hope all my buddies in Thunderfam are well. I’m so behind on fanfic updates at the moment for reading, let alone writing but hopefully I get past this several-years-long block I’m dealing with soon, I miss it!!!

fanfic writers love to mention the burning at the stake but that's never actually confirmed as the standard punishment for sorcery in canon. old merlin barely escapes death on the pyre. he tells daegal that arthur would probably hang him if he found out the truth. he tells arthur "you would've chopped my head off". did merlin spend most of his time imagining all the different ways in which he could be executed or did the writers not want to commit

#we also see people get executed in different ways #as the behading in ep 1 #idk i just find it kind of funny #did it depend on the mood of the king #but yeah historically it's mainly burning on the pyre (?) #also more dramatic so i can see why fanfic writers go with that one #i'd like to see a fanfic mention a different method though #for once. it'd be interesting i think #ramblings #merlin

Y'all I have to tell you, every time I see the term "Pyre" used as a name for blazeborn family units (like "flock" for avians), I do a little happy dance. I came up with it for a friend's Rancher fic like two years ago by now and I keep seeing it pop up in new Tango fics, and I friggin' LOVE IT. Keep it up guys, you're making my little worldbuilding heart so damn happy 🥰

Yknow. I do forsee a potential plot point for Netflix-levania to somehow have Dracula as a villain back, even with the end of the previous series. Obligation. He's no longer the weary widower, and with Lisa's return there's closure. He's lived as a man. He understands man. He may not even hate man. Maybe.

And yet he's back because the other Vampires are fucking it up and now daddy's home to bring back order. He's no longer gunning for genocide, but honestly, the politicking of the vampires who are so far up their own asses, they need to be reminded who's really in charge. His death left a power vacuum, a particularly annoying vacuum. Maybe the little things of humanity irk him, but vampires are everything they have but turned up to 11.

So at the end it's a formality. He'll come back, clean things up among vampire society, make enough of a mess to get a Belmont to kill him, then turn in for another 100 years.

Does this make him too noble? Probably. If you want the grandiose "What is a man" Dracula, you can extrapolate from "It's an obligation" and have him actively resent people pulling him out of the afterlife from Lisa so fucking much, that he leans too hard into the role. The part of him who's evil out of obligation and the part who's evil out of resentment begin to blur the lines. Is he the lord of darkness because that's the role he's been cast and is simply going through the motions or his he just so simply done with the whole process that he refuses to give up an inch of power to any other Vampire (or human) because they're all just children in his eyes?

It could still ultimately culminate in a Soma Cruz plot line where after 1999 he quits so hard that he refuses to even return to the role properly but it doesn't matter because his mere presence fills the vacuum, even when he does nothing (not for the lack of trying from others).

Maybe that's a bit petulant in its own right. YMMV, but I think that's the point. For being such an archetypal lord of all evil villains, how he fills it is shockingly dynamic. He's evil for evils sake, a beacon of arrogance, or a truly tragic villain. Depends on what's needed. If he does come back, I do want to really see a "Castlevania does Bram Stoker's Dracula. Genuinely. It's just an adaptation for the original novel because that's Canon to the original Castlevania timeline, and it'd be funny to properly reveal that Quincy Morris is a Belmont (And his son fights WW1 vampires and grandson WW2)."

Weird day of reading today:

Stared at Locked Tomb for a few minutes as I thought about rereads, but at this point I'm just gonna wait for Alecto to go through the series again. I don't think I'm emotionally strong enough atm to endure the memes again anyways.

Reread an old manuscript for a novel that I never finished. 48k and it's just immensely harrowing with a really brutal ending per the outline that I don't think would ever make it past editing lmao. Looking at when I wrote it, that makes a lot of sense. One of the only first-person POV things I've ever written, and it was surprisingly all right. I'd probably rewrite this as third-person close if I were to revisit it. Cool world that I didn't really utilize as well.

Picked through some highlights of Gormenghast and buried myself in indulgent, decadent prose for a while. There's singular clauses with more creativity than entire stories I've written. Just means there's more to aspire to, I suppose!

Wanted to reread some passages from a few Robin Hobb books, but I cannot remember which book is which within a series because all of her novels have just the worst titles. Just meant that I waded through beautiful moment after beautiful moment in search of what I was after. Then wound up reading the ending of Elderlings all over again, much to my heart's deep sorrow.

Hi,

This is my very fleeting post to say a) yes I am still alive, and b) I will eventually make my way back to fandom on some level soon. (Currently working through a lot of Accumulated Crap and trying to do something to improve the parts of myself that have been causing me a lot of problems as I’m getting older. Not that anyone has asked or anything, and honestly please don’t feel bad if you haven’t etc, but I know I like a bit of reassurance from my mutuals once in a while) 😊
