Taste the Blood of Dracula (1970)
"We'll pay the price."
"You will be repaid a thousand times."
"And may the Devil take good care of you."
#taste the blood of dracula#dracinema#hammer horror#hammer films#1970#peter sasdy#anthony hinds#christopher lee#geoffrey keen#gwen watford#linda hayden#peter sallis#anthony higgins#isla blair#john carson#martin jarvis#ralph bates#roy kinnear#michael ripper#russell hunter#madeline smith#I'd almost completely forgotten it but actually the very first bit of fanfiction i ever wrote was for this film; a little sequel giving Roy#Kinnear's nervous shopkeeper a grisly end. how time flies. anyway‚ this is good Hammer fun; feels like an end of an era in a way‚ the last#gasp of 60s Hammer (gothic aesthetic‚ older established actors‚ thoughtful scripts) giving way to 70s Hammer (more nudity and gore‚ a new#stable of young actors like Hayden and Bates‚ a marked decrease in subtlety on all fronts). not that there weren't some good films from the#studio in the 70s‚ but the innocence was definitely gone. a solid plot is propped up by some great character actors (John Carson!) and in#his first ever film Bates is pretty wonderful. Lee‚ sadly‚ seems fairly unenthusiastic with it all (and probably was; the film was written#without him initially‚ until US backers demanded his presence) and Sasdy seems content to have him hang back and look moody for most of the#film. less forgivable is Sasdy's sexualisation of Hayden (then 17) or an ending which surely counts as Dracula's most pathetic defeat#but it looks very nice and that cast are all very wonderful so i find myaelf revisiting again every few years..
