Longing - a Picturesque prequel (Klaroline fanfiction)
Hellooo, the Picturesque prequel from Klaus's POV is finally here!
Longing
Summary: Klaus likes his life, mostly. He has his own flat in New York City, a great group of friends, a budding career as an artist, but as he's navigating all the ups and downs the city throws at him, he realises that he's longing for something more. Or rather, someone.
[The long-awaited prequel to Picturesque! As promised, this is from Klaus's POV and tells the story of how in the process of figuring out who he wants to be, he's more and more drawn towards Caroline. Too bad she doesn't think of him as anything other than a friend...]
I cannot believe how long this took! Writing from Klaus's POV was challenging, and I felt like my writing style had changed in the years since I wrote Picturesque. Anyway, here's my labour of love, hope you like it! This will be a two-parter, the second chapter will be up next week. To new readers, this is a prequel to Picturesque so PLEASE read that fic before this! You'll enjoy this fic better *after* reading Picturesque. While chronologically/plot-wise Longing comes first, I feel like from the progression of my writing style and the work I've put in the characterisations, it makes more sense to read Longing after Picturesque. Also, if you're a familiar reader, I'd still suggest you read Picturesque, just to brush up (I've made some slight edits for continuity, especially in the last chapter)
For @recyclingss who's always been such a tireless cheerleader <3

I was tagged by @galvanizedfriend
The best way to describe my music taste is a little bit of everything. The five I’ve chosen are on my repeat playlist that I discovered in the past year. Not included in this list, but also on my repeat music list, is music from the 60s-90s such as Queen, Elton John, Fleetwood Mac, Reba, George Strait, Plain White T’s.
Unsteady by X Ambassadors
Brother by Kodaline
Lovely by Billie Eilish, Khalid
Spinning Bottles by Carrie Underwood
Whiskey Lullaby by Alison Krauss, Brad Paisley
Feel in love with the first two songs when I found the songs in video edits for Klaus and Elijah. The third one was from a video edit for Klaroline. The fourth I found when I listened to Carrie Underwood’s album, Cry Pretty. The last one was introduced to me by a family friend.

SOUND OF SETTLING!!!! WHAT IS GOING ON IN CAROLINE’S MIND WHEN THE RED HEAD ASKS HER TO GIVE KLAUS A DRINK
The way you went full caps lock with this 🥲🥲
This is totally improvised, friend, I hope you like it. 😭😭 Also, sorry about mistakes.
Extra scene in The Sound of Settling through Caroline's POV:
"Hi, excuse me?"
Caroline puts down the receipts she had been organizing, a smile instantly plastered on her face as she looks up at the woman.
Genevieve, the name is still fresh on Caroline's mind. She just finished mixing her a latte, with an added dash of vanilla that wasn't originally a part of the order because she looked like she could use it. It's rare that she gets these things wrong, but it happens.
"Do you not like your drink?" Caroline asks. "I can get you another one."
"No, the drink is fantastic," Genevieve says with a grin. "I was wondering if you could help me with something. I just... Never really did this kind of thing before."
Curiosity immediately prickles at Caroline. She puts down the receipts and props her elbows on the counter, leaning forward as she gives Genevieve her full attention. "Yes?"
Genevieve closes her hands around her coffee cup, whispering conspiratorially. "So... Say I wanted to send a coffee to a guy."
"Ok."
"But I don't really know him."
"You mean like flirting?"
"Yes. Does that sound crazy?"
"No! It sounds amazing. Love the idea."
"Then what would you recommend?"
"You don't know anything about him?"
"Nothing at all."
Caroline chews on her lower lip pensively for a bit. "I guess I'd go with a latte. Non-fat, double shot. It's a classic, most people like it. Not too sweet, not too bitter. Might not be his favorite, but I doubt he'll dislike it. You're sure he likes coffee?"
"Well... He's in a coffee shop."
"Oh?" Caroline's eyebrows shoot up. "He's here?"
Genevieve casts a glance over her shoulders, nodding towards a familiar table at the back, close to the window. Caroline's stomach drops when her eyes land on Klaus, totally oblivious while he works on his computer.
"Oh. Him," she says, her previous cheerfulness all but snuffed out.
"Do you know him? Is he a regular?" Genevieve asks, big eyes full of hope.
Caroline looks from Klaus to Genevieve, taking in her super model features: shiny red hair that cascades in annoyingly natural waves down her shoulders, full lips made fatter by her red-hot lipstick, blue eyes that seem fake so light they are. She is stunning. Suddenly, Caroline can't think of a reason why a single straight man would ever turn down someone like Genevieve, and she cannot help the bite of jealousy.
She's been flirting with Klaus for months, and in spite of all the mixed signals that make her think there might be something there, he's never made a move. He's either not into women, which she doesn't think is the case, or he's just not into her, which... Well.
The bitter side of Caroline considers telling Genevieve that yes, she knows him, and yes, he is a regular, and sorry, but he's off the market. But she doesn't want to do that to the poor woman, and, anyway, maybe this is a sign. If Klaus says yes to Genevieve, then Caroline will know she's been friendzoned and maybe then she can finally drop it, move on and Enzo can stop giving her heat for acting like a school girl with a crush.
If he turns her down, however...
It doesn't exactly mean anything, but it might just mean something.
"Yeah, he's a regular," Caroline says, affecting a smile she doesn't really feel. "I think he'll love a latte. I'll make it extra nice."
She winks at Genevieve's relieved thank you, turns away as the woman goes back to ogling Klaus. Caroline can't really blame her. He is way too hot - and also way too distracted. It's almost an invitation to be stared at.
She might not be a total bitch, but she's not harmless either. She knows Klaus' feelings about lattes - they're ok, but hardly get his heart beating faster. Not like a good four-shots cappuccino, or a Klaus. That's the real secret to his heart, and it's Caroline's to keep.
She'll be damned if she'll make things easy for the statuesque redhead with the face of a freaking angel. The Klaus is all hers.

50k word drabble for Cornelia Street pleaseeeeeee
Came up a *bit* short of 50k words lol, I hope you like this nat!
Caroline finds an apartment in Cornelia Street by pure chance.
She ran into Stefan, her ex-boyfriend from college, in a flower shop that she’d stumbled into as shelter from the pouring rain soaking the bustling city streets. He was there buying a bouquet for his girlfriend but also was stuck there, waiting for the rain to stop.
They struck up a conversation and she mentioned offhandedly how her lease was going to end soon and he mentioned that his girlfriend — who Caroline, by that point in the conversation, had learned from his many mentions of her that she was a stunning, British blonde who he described as a hard candy with a gooey inside (which she absolutely did not want to think about because she didn’t want to get sucked into the logistics of that analogy) — had just moved out of her brother’s place and into his apartment and her brother, Klaus, was looking for a roommate.
He rented a two-bedroom apartment in Cornelia Street, Stefan described him as a bit of a cocky asshole who would (eventually) grow into you.
And really, Caroline should’ve tossed the scrap of paper where Stefan had written Klaus’ number away. She didn’t know him, he could be some murdering psychopath for all she knew, and she was not the type of person to just jump into things without a color-coordinated, alphabetized plan and yet….
She ended up renting an apartment in Cornelia Street.
Stefan was right when he said Klaus was a bit of a cocky asshole, actually not a bit but a lot.
She tried to ignore his existence as much as possible but moving in with Klaus meant seeing Stefan and his girlfriend Rebekah basically on a daily basis.
There were no lingering feelings or any awkwardness left between her and Stefan, they were friends hell, they were probably closer now than they were when they had dated. Rebekah proved to be a great friend too, they had similar taste and got along great — Caroline noted idly that if they had met back in high school they’d probably be mortal enemies from just how similar they were, but right here and now, she was quickly becoming one of her best friends.
Hanging out with them, however, meant hanging out with Klaus too, much to her chagrin.
But, as Stefan had said, he’d eventually wormed into a hole in her heart without her permission, as irritating as he was. Especially after their weekly visit to Rousseau's bar, where Caroline would get drunk, being the lightweight that she was, and Klaus would end up taking care of her, even in the mornings when she was too hungover to hold her head up.
The problem was that she liked him a little too much.
They were sitting in the back of a Taxi, his jacket was around her shoulders as she clung to him like a life-sized teddy bear (in her drunken state she couldn’t help but think that a life-sized Klaus stuffed pillow would sell well). Her cheek was pressed to his neck, her head laying on his shoulder, and her arms clutching to him with all her drunken strength.
She loved to be there enveloped in his arms and where she could smell his cologne, if she was even the least bit sober she would have fought herself on it but he was just so warm. She wanted to stay in his arms as long as she could, so much so that she let him know just that, but the fogginess of her brain made the words that came out of her mind completely absurd.
“I rent a place in Cornelia Street,” she mentioned casually, a sly invitation so she wouldn’t have to part with him.
He laughed, a deep, rich thing that she felt rumbling in his chest, and when she looked up with a frown, noticed his dimples hollowing out on his cheeks.
She frowned, wanting to cross her arms over her chest but having absolutely no energy to do so especially not if she had to pull away from him.
“Oh sweetheart, I know,” he laughed, pressing a kiss to her temple as he saw the car turn to their home from the window.
The first time Klaus kisses her, it’s in the middle of Cornelia Street after they were making their way back home from lunch.
She didn’t really know what spurred it on, one second she was telling him of the party she was planning for Stefan and Rebekah’s engagement party, and boom, a second later his lips were on hers, kissing her like they’d done so a million times before.
Later, he told her it was because whenever she talked about the things she loved her eyes lit up impossibly so and he’d always been incredibly impulsive.
She laughed. “So you just had to kiss me there and then?”
“Of course, Cornelia Street is practically ours, Caroline.”
She figured he was right — that’s where they met, where they lived, where they became friends, where they ate lunch together at the little restaurant down the street and where she forced him into shops with her. Cornelia Street and all of its colorful liveliness made her think of nothing but Klaus; his name was engraved in the pavement, and if she were ever to lose him, she wouldn’t be able to step foot back there without reliving through that unmendable heartbreak.
She hoped she never had to though, she loved Cornelia Street and most importantly, she loved him.
Much later, when their family has grown and they could not keep living in that simple, two-bedroom apartment, they still walked through those streets as if they would forever be theirs.
He held her hand as they walked through those sacred grounds, spotting their old apartment complex, the place where they’d spent so much time together, barefoot in the kitchen.
Caroline smiled. She wondered who lived there now, wondered if it was a couple too stubborn to get with one another like they once were and if they loved Cornelia Street as they did.
But even if they did, Klaus was right all those years ago — this city screamed their names in every turn they took, their love was carved in the pavement and painted in the brick walls and would always be theirs.

Sparks Fly
Tumblr media
Happy Birthday Nat @recyclingss I hope you have had a lovely day (and LOTS and LOTS of cake) and enjoy this little gift.
Caroline Forbes has just started Med School. She’s determined to work hard and not be distracted by anyone or anything. Looks like fate, and an administrative error, has other plans.
Sparks Fly
Caroline Forbes had a mantra when she started college - work hard and with absolutely no distractions.
She promised herself that after her admission to med school she wouldn’t squander her opportunities. She was going to be Dr Caroline Elizabeth Forbes and no one and nothing would interfere with that goal.
All was going well - well, until it wasn’t.
Stanford was beautiful this time of the day, the looming sunset only accentuating the richly coloured array of autumn leaves as they crunched underfoot.
It was a Friday, she remembered because that coming Monday was Labor Day, meaning no classes for three whole days. Most people had either left for the long weekend or were planning to attend the multitude of back to college parties on campus.
She’d been invited, of course, but turned down each one. No distractions and all that.
Also, Caroline had already planned her extended weekend down to the last minute. Although the semester had only commenced two weeks earlier she decided some revision would give her the extra reinforcement needed when classes resumed.
As she made her way through the empty corridors, Caroline realised just how subdued her usually busy dorm was and secretly glad for the peace and quiet it would afford her to study.
It was only when she approached her door that Caroline realised that peace and quiet might not be coming so soon. Her door was slightly ajar and Caroline knew she hadn’t left it that way. Then she heard it, some singing albeit off-key. What burglar had time to sing while he stole her prized possessions?
Caroline rifled through her purse madly hoping the can of hairspray she discovered would be as effective as mace or at least look it. She also made a mental note to buy some mace next time she was at the store because that’s the kind of person she was, always organised even in a crisis.
She nudged the door open slowly only to find her burglar had also found time to undress and was half naked bar the white towel hanging low on his toned hips. He might have not been able to sing but the man could wear a towel.
His back was to the door which was probably a good thing given Caroline was trying to form some coherent words in a sequence that hopefully made sense. She realised after a beat that any words would have to do.
Clearly her thinking was louder than she envisioned given he turned around curiously.
“I am armed and not afraid to…”
“Tame my thatch of wild curls with your hair spray?” He sounded like Mr Darcy, that much she could tell.
“How did you...”
“I saw your reflection in the window,” he explained, gesturing to the glass. “Next time you want to surprise someone I suggest less hesitation and more action, love.”
“Don’t call me that,” she huffed, realising that wasn’t her most pressing concern. “Who are you and what are you doing in my room?”
“Excuse me, this is my room.” A likely story given their dorms weren’t the coed kind.
“Well, last time I checked I am a woman and you are...so not one.”
“What gave it away?” He smirked, those totally non-attractive crimson lips tugging at the edges.
“Don’t you have any clothes?”
“I have an entire suitcase, in fact I was unpacking when you stormed in hairspray in hand, sweetheart.”
“I mean clothes to wear, like right now,” she growled.
“Why? Am I distracting you.”
He just had to go and use the d word, the one thing she wasn’t supposed to be. Avoiding distraction was her number one aim and he was making that so much more difficult.
Bastard.
“No, not at all,” she mumbled. “I just want you gone and if it means pushing you into the hallway half-dressed then that is totally on you.”
“Wow, you really aren’t the hospitable kind, are you?” He offered, his blue eyes clouding over momentarily telling her more than she wanted to know and causing other places to stir that hadn’t in a while. “In hindsight the Taylor Swift paraphernalia should have alerted me but this is clearly an administrative error nothing more.”
“So, you’ll leave then?”
“Not that you cared to ask about my wellbeing but I arrived late in term from the UK due to COVID delays. I did try to call the administration office earlier and no one answered. It is a long weekend so not completely unexpected.”
“So, what exactly are you saying?”
“I stay here for the next few days only. I promise I’ll be well behaved and I’ll even cover myself up appropriately so as not to distract you.”
“I never said that..” she lied. Klaus chose that moment to place a navy henley over his head, covering up exactly what she’d been trying to avoid but also ogle at the same time.
“I will be out of your hair in a couple of days, I promise. In fact we never had to see each other ever again if that helps?”
Caroline wanted to think that it helped and she was pleased he was now fully covered. She was all about no distractions after all.
“Fine,” she replied curtly, sitting on her bed. “I have some study to do so will be busy anyway.”
“What are you studying?”
“Medicine.”
“Looks like we have more in common than first thought,” he smiled, grabbing one of their text books and waving it in her direction. “I can help with studying if you like?”

Currently binge-reading your drabbles and I NEED a Sunday mini for Movie Magic PLEASE ❤️❤️❤️
mini-sequel to this
Movie Magic: 3D
Unfortunately for them both, the movie musical finale was not the end of the spell. Neither was the true crime documentary, nor the superhero blockbuster.
As the rubble of a generic cityscape rippled into a bustling crowd with the nip of sea in the air, Klaus groaned at the odd nausea that overwhelmed him every time. "This better be a horror story, I need to kill something."
"Spoken like a true hero," Caroline bit back dryly. But she looked around, and her hands fell to the modest travel gown she wore, one he thought suited her figure quite well. "I guess it's a period piece? Where do you think we are?"
He tuned his ear to the conversations around them, his eyes searching for familiar landmarks. "The English shore, I think, though I'm not certain. Turn of the 20th century, perhaps a bit later."
The parameters of the spell seemed to carry them along with the plot, and they had learned to collect context when it arose. And when they turned the corner to see a busy dock, the necessary context loomed large ahead. "Oh," she sighed, her hand fluttering to cover her heart. "A-are we..."
Feeling a bit dumbfounded, he felt around his jacket to find a barely noticeable weight. He looked to her briefly, only to find her still staring at the impressive ship and its many passengers. His fingers latched onto the slips of paper in his pocket, pulling them out with an odd sense of reverence. "It would seem so, love." He swallowed, nerves somewhat ruining the effect of his smirk. "I hope you're a strong swimmer."
"I'm more worried about the cold," she said quietly as he handed her the tickets. "Watching that scene gave me such nightmares when I was younger. Before that, it seemed like an adventure."
"It still can be," he promised, his voice just as quiet despite the growing shouts and clamor around them. "At least, until this damned spell runs its course."
She ran a gentle thumb over each printed letter. "Right," she sighed again. "It's just a movie."
But it felt like so much more, Klaus thought, as he guided them down the street to where they would be boarding the RMS Titanic. While Caroline had been the one to play the optimist and demand his patience, he had the strangest urge to commandeer that role. "Did you know that vampires can get seasick? Elijah once ruined his favorite shoes after a particularly indulgent day of feeding, and he's never forgiven me for painting the scene."
Choking back a laugh tinged with disgust, she took the arm he offered - so as not to be lost in the crowd, he was sure. "Tell me you still have it."
"It's tucked in storage somewhere," he answered, grinning at the idea of digging it out for her amusement. "I'll be sure to show you one day."
Her breath hitched as the ship towered over them, her focus stolen once more. "Will you paint this, too?"
He let his hand fall on top of hers, the contact grounding them both. His grin, though, tilted into a wicked smirk. "Like one of my French girls?"
Finally, her laughter broke free in a giggle, not tainted in the slightest. He quite liked the sound of it. When this spell did run its course, Klaus hoped to paint a reminder of this moment. Even if he took extra precautions to ensure nothing of its like could happen again, he found he could treasure the circumstances just this once.

because basically screaming my adoration on ffnet was not enough (LMAO), i NEED a) your director's cut on that scene between klaus and caroline when he's outside her window and stuff.... escalates and b) how did Crowley know about the ~soul~ thing re: Caroline?
Scream your adoration all you want, I live for it!
Crowley is the King of Hell and a crossroads demon—he makes it his business to know the status of various souls, especially the ones that he earmarks as possibly being up for sale.
To me, Caroline didn’t sell her soul per se, but she traded herself to Klaus for Dean, and say what you want about Crowley—he is a gentleman. He doesn’t cross boundaries, and he considers that deal as taking her off the market, so to speak.
(Fun little SPN tie in: deals with crossroads demons are usually for 10 years—like, if you wanted to be the most famous actor of all time, you’d get that life for 10 years, then the crossroads demon would come to collect. Appropriate then, that Klaus gives Caroline no more than 10 years as a human.)
Director’s Cut of That Scene, you say?
So Dean, with whom Klaus had a super contentious relationship (putting it mildly), runs into his house with the girl he loves dead in his arms. Not almost dead, but no coming back from it, really truly actually dead. A void where her heartbeat should be. After he JUST. GOT. HER. He had held her in his arms while she slept only mere hours ago!
Klaus has never felt this way about someone in his entire millennia of living (I didn’t watch TO, therefore it doesn’t exist) and he just found her, what, months ago? And when he found her, she was a vampire, so the odds of losing her, while not at zero, were pretty damn low. Then through circumstances that he was admittedly NOT pleased about, she winds up human again and he warned her. He warned her that she was breakable, that she was weaker this way, and she didn’t listen. She told him off!
So he’s standing there, and he’s feeling all these things he hasn’t felt in a long time—fear, fury, terror (and he told her, didn’t he, he told her he didn’t know what he was supposed to do without her), while Stefan is trying to bring her back and it isn’t working (because of course it isn’t). His blood is roaring in his ears, and he will burn down this entire country, will make it scream—
And then she coughs.
And he’s in shock—adrenaline and rage and fear still coursing through him—and while he’s grappling with all of this, she goes home.
Where he’s still not invited in.
So that shock and fear and rage just simmers until he can’t take it anymore and goes to confront her.
On the one hand, at least she’s alive—but she still is standing there, behind a barrier that she refuses to remove, both available and unavailable to him all at once. And she tells him that she’s okay, she’s fine, really, it’s going to be okay—but it’s not okay because you were dead, Caroline.
Klaus loses his shit.
Threatening her is the last card he has to play, and he doesn’t particularly relish the idea of using it, but—
Well, she won’t let him in.
You're really good with the apologizing, but so far, not great with the follow through.
He loves her. He’ll follow through on that.

Ok so I’m in early season 4. I’ve always really liked Bonnie, but she never gets anything to do and when she does it’s always just “here’s a random guy for you to have a relationship with and that will be your story for a while” (her and Jeremy 🤮) and it’s never interesting (although I wouldn’t mind if they went anywhere at all with her and Damon tbh).
I also very much like Damon, by far the better brother. I really don’t care about anything Elena-related anymore and I think it’s mostly because they’ve played everything out with her several times through already. Also sorry to Nina Dobrev but she’s not a great actor and I’ve kinda had it with the character by now. The less said about Stefan the better. Jeremy and Tyler too.
Now that I’m several seasons in though it really is feeling like they’re stretching for content. The world and season threats got too big and they have no idea how to stop the power creep so they just keep adding stuff that totally breaks established lore. One of the things I love about Caroline is how well she grounded the story (sure she’s a vampire but she’s also still really into regular high school drama and trying to be a normal person still).
(Also sorry for sending anon before. I didn’t realize I’d clicked that until it had sent)
Hello!! It's been a long time since I watched the show so I apologise in advance for any inadvertent spoilers or vague plot recall.
Okay so Bonnie has legit been done the dirtiest even though she's one of the coolest characters. I like some of her plot lines where her witch roots means she's actively opposed to the vampires but she still wants to be on Elena's side, the conflict could have been interesting but it's never mined deeper. I hate her and Jeremy too and I agree that she and Damon have some legit chemistry (explored in further seasons, so you do have something to look forward to!)
Yeah Elena is annoying, and I got tired quickly about how everything was always about her. I'm not sure if I prefer Damon over Stefan, but Stelena is defs more boring. I prefer Stefan as a stand alone character or his friendship dynamic with Lexi, Caroline etc (more on this later).
I agree with you that the world building gets bigger than the writers can handle, but I really enjoyed the cure storyline in s4. I'm in the minority, but I really liked how there are all these factions with their own agendas competing to get the cure, and well, i always like it when the Originals have to team up with the Mystic Falls gang.
Talking about the Originals, I think they're the best thing the show has ever done. The casting, the acting, the group dynamics, the lore, the integration with the core tvd group... Perfection. What do you think? Who's your favourite Original?
Yes, Caroline is such a breath of fresh air in the show. I absolutely love how she's one of the few characters who actually LOVES being a vampire. I related to her even before she turned, when she was talking about being second choice "no matter how much I do, its never enough". She's thriving as a vampire as well as retaining her connection to her human side, without any of the angsty brooding that Stefan and all do. One of the reasons I love Klaroline is that Klaus is the ONLY one who recognises this, that she wants a life bigger and better than this. He accepts her as she is, and I just looove how much he changes throughout the course of knowing her, how he consistently puts her first. Sigh. I can go on and on about Klaroline. They have such epic moments, my god. What have been your favourite scenes??

(Realised I'd written this years ago but never posted. Hopefully this gives me some much-needed inspiration while I muddle through my WIPs. Happy reading!)

Or read below!
It’s Zuko’s 18th birthday and he is nowhere to be found. By all accounts, he’d made an appearance at the Royal Ball for a respectable amount of time and then disappeared into thin air. Katara hurries across the halls of the palace, one hand gathering the skirts of her formal gown, her heels clicking on the marble floor. The palace staff haven’t seen him either—he wasn’t in his bedchambers, nor in the library, and she’d even checked under the willow tree next to the turtleduck pond. Katara fumes, her annoyance rising. She’s laboured over his gift for days, the least he could do is not get kidnapped or whatever.
It’s nearing midnight and Katara is about to contemplate hiring the services of Jun and her shirshu when she remembers the one place she hadn’t yet searched: the rooftop. While the rooftop was largely inaccessible, owing to its steep pagoda architecture, there was a flat alcove, hidden to the public, that opened up to the sky. Zuko had shown it to her a while ago when he was making plans for renovation, but it was dirty and in disrepair then, which is why it had slipped her mind.
The entrance to the roof is hidden behind a tapestry, a rather heavy, ugly thing the colour of blood. Katara twitches the tapestry aside and slips behind it. A narrow spiral staircase stands in front of her, illuminated by a hanging dusty lantern. Clutching the wrought iron railings, she begins the dizzying climb. An unexpected sight greets her at the top.
The place has been transformed into a charming rooftop garden. Vines climb the walls and trail down the parapet. Rows of potted herbs are flanked by beds of exotic flowers, the spicy and sweet scents intermingling in interesting ways. Fat beeswax candles stuck on iron stands are placed strategically in recesses, giving the entire garden a low, atmospheric lighting. And lounging on a profusion of cushions, eyes shut, his top knot undone, is Zuko.
“Took you long enough,” he says lazily, cranking one eye open.
“Happy Birthday,” Katara snaps, flinging the wrapped parcel at his stomach with a little too much force.
Zuko straightens immediately. “What is this?”
“Your present, dummy. I’ve been running around everywhere looking for you.”
He frowns. “Didn’t Oromi deliver you the message?”
“What message?” she asks, sinking into a cushion beside him.
“He must have misplaced the note again.” Oromi was the new palace gardener, a country lad, kind-hearted but rather forgetful. He was a magician at his work, though—he could make the stubbornest of saplings sprout and the most exotic flowers bloom under his care, almost like he was bending them. This little rooftop garden seems to be his doing. “I wrote you a message asking you to meet me here. I could not stand all those dreadful festivities.”
“Yes, yes what a bore having people throwing grand parties in your honour.”
A sheepish smile spread across his face. “I appreciate it all, I really do.”
“The royal cooks roasted an entire hippo-ox in your honour.”
“And I savoured every bite of it…but it exhausts me, having to put on this stern, aloof, regal front.” He does look exhausted, there are lines around his eyes that have no business being there. He also looks older; the planes of his face have sharpened and there’s stubble on his face on days he has no official business. “I hate pretending to be someone I’m not, especially on my birthday, when I’d rather spend time with the people I like.” His eyes flicker to her and her stomach flips.
Clearing her throat, Katara gestures to the package lying in his lap. “Open your gift.”
Zuko picks up the gift, examining it from every angle. Katara watches him carefully as his deft fingers unwrap the parcel, untying the strings and peeling off the layers. Nestled in the folds is a stack of small, unassuming-looking, semi-circular cakes.
“It’s a mooncake,” says Katara hurriedly. “A traditional Water Tribe recipe. Probably not a very special gift but my mom used to make them for birthdays-”
Zuko is already digging into the stack. He takes a bite, makes a sound of appreciation, and polishes off the whole cake. “Is there fruit jam inside?!” he asks in delight, mouth full. He offers a cake to her and picks another for himself.
“Yes!” She grins. “Salmonberry jam. I spent days in the palace kitchen, trying to get the thickness of the filling right. It needs to be the right amount of oozy…”
The words die on her tongue. Zuko is licking the jam off his fingers. She puts down her cake, suddenly very flustered.
Zuko looks up as she falls silent. Their eyes meet and the moment holds still. They’ve been dancing around each other for the past two years, longer than that, if she’s honest. Lingering looks, not-so-accidental touches, charged banter…she’s been noticing it more in their interactions lately, whether it’s quiet picnics beside the turtleduck pond or heated fights during state meetings. And now this connection, whatever it may be, is threatening to make itself known in very real ways. Katara has half a mind to brush off the moment with a flippant remark.
It’s Zuko who breaks the silence. “You look beautiful, by the way,” he comments. She’s wearing a traditional Fire Nation gown, richly embroidered in threads of red and gold, but her hair—
“Your hair is braided Water Tribe style. It looks good on you.”
She smiles, fighting off a blush. “Thank you.”

Hi there!! I was just thinking about Old Love and how I was planning to reread it. And then I found your Tumblr! Just thought i'd pop in and fangirl over your fic. It WRECKED me and I love you for that. :)
Hi there!! I really can’t thank you enough for the boost of joy you gave me with this ask. Old Love is such a special story to me, not the least of which because it was written during a pretty rotten time in my life; and each time it gets a shout out, I reflect on how much solace it gave me to write it.
All that to say, it wrecked me just the same as you and I’m glad you’re able to enjoy it years later. Thank you for taking the time to let me know. Truly a gift ❤️

Director’s cut of The Wolf 2x14 and the necklace scene 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Hi again, friend 🥺❤️
So the necklace scene is.......... stolen from canon, actually. 🥲 But it's Jackson who gifts Hayley a necklace. I thought it was cute, so I wanted to somehow keep it there. 🤣 And it ended up working well for me, because Caroline is about to go through a ritual that will magically bind her to Jackson, and even though they've come up with a way (thanks to Kol) to make sure it's not a wedding ritual, Klaus is very much feeling the heat of jealousy there.
I can't really see the two of them getting married the old traditional way (look away, Ennie). I don't think weddings necessarily mean anything to Klaus. He's possessive, yes. But exchanging vows in front of an audience wouldn't be anything special to him. It is said later that Caroline understands this, and she truly does, because she knows Klaus. He's loud and he's over the top and he's a diva, basically, who enjoys the spotlight and flair of it all way too much, but the things that really mean something to him, he holds close to his heart and is very discreet about. I can see many interpretations for that, but one of the most obvious ones is that he doesn't like to feel vulnerable. So loving something, for him, is the same as keeping a secret. So what that scene ends up being is Klaus taking a moment, behind the scenes, where no one can see them, to declare his undying love for Caroline. Just for the two of them (and the baby who was there third wheeling), no one else needs to know. He has other ways of showing Caroline is his, but making an open declaration in front of people he hates is not one of them. So while the necklace thing comes from canon, everything they say to each other is original (lol), and it is their very own ceremony, if you will.
Klaus doesn't say ILY very often, but when he does say it, it makes Caroline's world spin faster. And after everything they'd been through in TW1 and then half of TW2, first figuring out how they felt for each other, then trying to find their footing after her traumatic transition and being separated from their child, this was *the* moment. When they finally settled. Ok, we're together, we love each other, this is for life. And that's why it's one of my favorites. 🥺
Thanks for asking about TW2 friend! 😭❤️ I like talking about it like a maniac 🥲

Tumblr media
Dear readers,
Thank you. In regards to @klarolinepositivity, I want you to know that today honestly is the most important. Yes, us content makers are a big part of this community but we would be nothing without you because you are what keeps this fandom alive. It is you that keeps us writing, creating and bringing content to this fandom. It is your positive encouragement and kind words that make creating in this fandom (or any fandom) worthwhile because without you, there would be no point in creating at all.
Yes, we may create because it is something we enjoy but we post because we want others to enjoy what we make. We also want to hear your thoughts and feelings our creations evoked. Whether it be happiness or sadness, we want to hear your positive feedback because it will keep us going. It will keep us creating.
I know that sometimes it may seem daunting to reach out to a writer or a graphic maker, fearful that they will be annoyed or that you’re wasting their time but trust me, you’re not. Even if we do not respond to every comment, we see them.
You are the reason why we create.
Because without you, there would be no fandom for anyone to find solace in.
You’re what keeps it alive.
Now, I want to thank some very special people who have given me the nudge to keep on writing.
@delightfullysunny: You read, reblog and review almost everything I write. I find that when I post, I am excited to see what you think. I cannot wait to read the review you leave me, giving me that urge to keep on writing. Some days are bad days but it's kind words like yours that mean the most. When my motivation is low or I have doubt in my writing skills, I go back to some of the things you’ve said and it reminds me of why I love to write. Your words have been noticed and appreciated, so thank you.
@1jemmagirl22: Jemma, you sweetheart. I see those reblogs. I see those reviews. I do. You are beyond kind and wonderful. Your reviews on A03 are always so positive and sweet. As a writer yourself, you know how intimidating it can be to post something, anxiously waiting for feedback so to see you reviewing and promoting me, is something that I not only admire but am thankful for. Your thoughtfulness and standing support is not only appreciated but utterly tear jerking (in the best way).
@enniec123: Everyone knows you and we all love you. You are our constant cheerleader. Bringing smiles to us all and cheering us on from the sidelines. You are always there to bring a smile to our face and squeal about the things you love. Hearing you rave over and over about something you’ve read or a graphic you loved is intoxicating. You breathe life into this fandom with the simple fact that you do not hold back your encouragement. There has been more than once that I thought of you, how something I would write (JAF) would make you smile and it kept me coming back to it.
@diaz-eddie and @recyclingss: I’m putting the two of you together because I have one very specific memory that means the world to me and it's because of the two of you. There was a night that we were in the old server and you were raving about Ballad of the Sea. That series is very near and dear to me and to hear both of you talk about how much you loved it, means the world to me. Both of you show appreciation for the writers you love and still do, that memory will always stay with me specifically. It was honestly that conversation that had me going on to writing the prequel and the sequel…and will have me writing the final part this year. Without that encouragement, Ballad of the Sea would have been a standalone one-shot. So, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for being probably two of the biggest cheerleaders in the fandom.
@carolineforbae: Girl, you’ve been with me since day one. Back when you got first dibs on Demonology to your comment bombs, you are someone to be cherish. I know we have not talked as often as we used to, because of real life being the way it is, but I always think of you and remember how you kept me going during my early days in the fandom. It was your constant friendship and encouragement that made me
@destellolunar: I remember having this really shitty day. Like just a super bad day and I was talking with you. It was around the time I was working on developing Echoes of Sorrow and you made me that graphic, the one I still use today, simply to make my day better. That graphic made me cry, because it made my day so much better. I know that I’ve praised you twice already this week but it just shows that you’re too amazing for this fandom. Seriously, creating content, co-running the library? You really are bringing this fandom together in the best way possible. Keep being that amazing and wonderful person you are. You deserve all the good things in life.
@klavscaroline: Three words. Wanderlust betting pool. We did not know each other when you came to me with the idea for that betting pool and I will be forever thankful that you did. I was still so new to the fandom and to hear that my fic had captivated you to the point of wanting to create something that would engage the readers more than I ever could have. While Wanderlust will always be my baby, it was you who made it an event. It was you who brought so many people into this fandom and if it wasn’t for that collaboration, I honestly do not know if I would have kept writing.
And to everyone who leaves a review, whether it be for me or someone else,
Thank You
Erica
