i think a lot about exactly 1 thing from the roman empire: the concept of bread and circus. the idea was that if your population was fed and entertained, they wouldn't revolt. you are asking us to give up our one small life, is the thing - for under 15 dollars an hour.
what would that buy, even. i am trading weekends and late nights and my back health. i am trading slow mornings and long walks and cortisol levels. i am trading sleep and silence and peace. for ... this. for what barely-covers-rent.
life really is more expensive right now. you aren't making that up. i make almost 3 times what i did 5 years ago, and despite an incredibly equal series of bills - i am still struggling. the most expensive line item i added was to own a dog. the money is just evaporating.
we were okay with it because it's a cost-benefit analysis. i could handle the customer harassment and standing all day and the manager's constantly changing temperament - i was coming home to hope, and my life planned in a blue envelope. three hours would buy me my dog's food for a month. i can give up three hours for him, for his shiny coat and wide, happy mouth. three days could be a new mattress, if i was thrifty. if i really scrimped and saved, we could maybe afford a trip into the city.
recently i cried in the car about the price of groceries.
business majors will be mad at me, but my most inflammatory opinion is that people should never be valued at the same place as products. your staff should not be a series of numbers in an excel sheet that you can just "replace" whenever you need something at that moment. your staff should be people, end of sentence.
it feels like someone somewhere is playing a very bad video game. like my life is a toy. like someone opened an app on their phone and hired me in diner dash ultra. they don't need to pay me well or treat me alright - they can always just show me the door. there is always someone more desperate, always someone more willing.
but i go to work and know i could save for years and not afford housing. i am never going to own my own home, most likely. i have no idea how to afford her ring, much less the wedding. my dog doesn't have his own yard. everything i love is on subscription. if i lose my job, i have no "nest egg" to catch my falling.
this thin life - they want me to give up summer for it. to open my mouth and throat and swallow the horrible hours and counted keystrokes. they want me to give up mountains and any non-federal holiday. to give up snow days. to give up talking to my mom whenever i want. to give up visiting the ocean and hearing the waves.
bread and circus worked for a while, actually. it was the kind of plan that would probably now be denounced by republicans as socialist commie liberal pronoun bullshit.
but sometimes i wonder if we should point them to the part of the history book that says: it worked until it didn't.

Why not make this because I'm just a filthy commie.
My thoughts on Disability (getting paid because you can't hold down a job due to your disability).
Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
It should at least be minimum wage. (And minimum wage should cover average cost of living in that region.)
Housing, electricity, and plumbing should just be covered. Also accessible transportation.
Medical costs should be covered. 100%
It should supplement food (and restrictions shouldn't be so limiting to the point where people with food allergies can't eat)
You should not lose any amount of your disability just because you make a little income (if you can't make enough to live off of or hold down a full time job due to your disability, you should qualify)
Marriage should have zero impact on your disability.
You should be allowed to own a home (why the fuck can't you own a home? That's dumb shit.)
It should cover any changes that you need to make to your home to make it accessible.
If you rent a place and you suddenly get a short term disability (like cancer). Your apartment should be covered until you recover.
If you rent a place and you suddenly get hit with a long term disability (like long covid or certain types of cancer) and you have to be moved (like if you're renting a condo for $1million a month. It's a bit of an exaggeration but it gets the point across for its reasonable to not expect the government to cover that). Then moving costs should be covered.
Before the capitalists (derogatory) come in my comments "You're just mad because you're too dumb to work so you want free shit." (Because they always do when I post a commie take).
I am disabled, and I have a full time job that pays me quite well (and is very accommodating to my disability). I just don't think people whose disability are more limiting than mine should suffer. Especially because every single disabled person knows that stress exacerbates symptoms.
Like the stress of being forced to live off what is the equivalent $2/hr for full time work, being forced to find a living space that covers that, and trying to find food you're allowed to eat on supplemented income with dietary restrictions (because most disabled people have to eat what most people consider "unhealthy" to manage our disability).
Before capitalists (derogatory) say "Your disability doesn't make you eat unhealthy food". You just want an excuse to eat junk food. People with cystic fibrosis often require calorie counts similar to Olympic athletes because they can't digest food right. People with POTS often require ridiculous sodium intakes to help manage the symptoms of low blood pressure. And people with migraines often need high carb "junk foods" to help manage the low blood flow that comes with a migraine flare-up.
The disabled body is fucking WEIRD and what's healthy to most people isn't necessarily healthy to us, and we've found our ridiculous ways of eating through trial and error to find out what best helps us function. If you don't live in our body, you can't tell us what's good for us.

Tumblr Coming in Clutch
With the "Based on your likes" again. And by coming in clutch, I mean sending me commie garbage.
Tumblr media
I could rant on this for hrs but I'll stick to the shorter version.
Most people that are homeless want to be homeless.
Those that don't want to be homeless fall under 2 categories (People who fell on bad times, and people who are mentally unwell.)
Where does the labor come from to build all these houses?
Assuming we use existing homes (or build new ones), who's to stop the homeless from destroying the home and turning it into a trap house? Who's to stop them from stripping the house for all it's parts and selling it for drug money?
What are you planning to tell people on hard times who are still working to make ends meet? "Just be homeless because then the gov will be forced to provide a home for you"?
Where then does the incentive come in for people to go back to work if they are just HANDED the fruits of someone else's labor.
Do you have ANY IDEA how much money it takes to buy a house in order to rent it out?
And then not just number 7, but also do you not realize how sheltered you are from changes in the market sometimes by being under a landlord? I had a one bedroom apartment with kitchen, bathroom, large Livingroom. For my rent, water, electricity, and trash services, I paid 600$ a month. Gas station around the corner, and 5 min or less from a Walmart. And so long as I was not using WAY MORE than average of the water or electricity, I would not be expected to pay more than that set amount.
Fact is, not just that, but if you own a place, YOU have to pay for the repairs when something isn't working. When you are renting a place, one of the perks is that so long as it's part of the property, and you were not the DIRECT cause of the damage, the landlord has a responsibility to replace it. Hell, if you are renting a home in an area with an HOA, often times the Landlord will deal with the HOA on your behalf. Also, there are often legal things that go into property ownership that people are protected from to some degree by renting.
And it's not a some rich person scheme to keep people out of homes either. THEY worked to get the money they needed to get their properties. And they often lose more than they make depending on the condition of the place they are renting out. And they have to make sure that they bring in tenants that will not destroy their property.
Are some landlords assholes? Yes. Are some landlords just soulless corporations that appoint someone to oversee a property? Yes. Is that MOST of rentals in the US? Absolutely not. And yes. Being a landlord is a job. Because there is legal paperwork, repair bills, you have to still manage the property, IE: lawn care, electrician work, pest control, etc, etc. It's a job where if you are in it alone, and you own very few properties, and you DON'T have an LLC to help you run things, then you are on call 24/7 more or less. Especially if you own an apartment complex. Then you are responsible for the management of every single part of your property. Up to and including any injuries, or other forms of legal liability.
AGAIN. I'm not saying there are NOT shitty landlords out there. But most really are not. And often they do/will want to work with you to help you out when you are having a rough go of it. But they have to pay property taxes and bills the same as everyone else. And they do it on your behalf because you don't own the property. Because if you did? GOOD F*CKING LUCK getting the city you live in to actually cut you a break.
*Addition to this post* Adding to number 4. Where's the money going to come from to buy these houses as well? Because people OWN them. Unless you are just advocating for the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT to confiscate houses. Which is NOT a slippery slope. It's a cliff. Also a great way to make inflation go up while your at it.

The archeo commie retard is angry because you are one of the few Jews on here who dont feel the need to couch your intellectual dismissal of hamas propaganda in "this is also bad for palestinians" or perfectly pc language to assauge the egos of violent antisemites. hamas and antisemitic disinformation are bad because they get Jews murdered. Period.
I'd say I'm happy to live rent free in someone else's head but honestly I had gotten used to way larger living spaces so the fact its for free isn't really enticing anymore :(

Would you say that culture influences religion or vice versa? Everything I've read about cultural Christianity in America is about how Christianity has shaped the culture here, so I'm wondering if it's religion or culture that shapes the other.
I think they both influence each other in a reciprocal way. Culture influences religion which then influences culture.
With America & Christianity, it has been deeply shaped by Protestantism and Puritanism and the like, and the classism, colonialism, racism, misogyny, queerphobia, and general shittiness that comes with it. But there's also a reason why these forms of Christianity appealed to people and why they are dominate. They benefit the social systems that were already in place.
Like, anti-oppressive Christian theologies have existed for a long time. Liberation theology is the main thing that comes to mind, which views Christianity as being fundamentally concerned with liberating the oppressed & Jesus' death showing how God identifies with the oppressed & their suffering, in defiance of the oppressors. Unsurprisingly, liberation theology was conceptualized by Latin American, Black, Palestinian, and Dalit theologians whose experienced of oppression shaped how they interpreted Christianity, as well as feminist & queer activists.
But these theologies do not benefit the people with social capital; the leaders, the bourgeoisie, the church figureheads. They are the ones the most sway over culture & what counts as True Christianity. A megachurch preacher makes enough money to afford multiple private jets, while your local queer Black commie pastor struggles to pay rent. So people with the cultural power shape religion, and then they use religion to shape culture to keep themselves in power. Oppressive Christianity isn't passively oppressive, it makes a continuous choice to center interpretations of Christianity that sustain current systems of inequality, while suppressing & attacking ones that threaten it.

I guess I'm going to passively @edwad on this because it was originally sort of supposed to be an ask for him only because. idk. as a tumblr commie he's our collective econ-theory advice columnist i guess. but i couldn't keep it short enough and it's more about me just talking to myself anyway. but I'm sitting here reading Skidelsky's edited Essential Keynes volume and it gets to the selections from the Tract on Monetary Reform. and Keynes says something about the natural interest rate and I'm trying to dredge something up from my brain about Sraffa's argument against a natural interest rate and end up falling down the rabbit hole on that a little bit and Wicksell's idea vs Hayek's idea of said concept. and I'm thinking about how every time I try to handle these ideas their concepts of things like "rent" and "interest" seems very slippery over time. and maybe I'm just broadly not well read enough. and how long it took me in high school even just to understand a substantialist value-concept from reading the opening chapters of capital.
but like what I really don't understand is the relationship of Marx's Critique taken more in its status as Critique to the conceptually related but still heterogeneous traditions of economics that come after him, in a way that isn't just attempting to rehabilitate the classical approach, or something like Ben Fine's critique of the explosion-implosion of the assumptions of marginalist theory, or like. idk Eatwell's constant insistence that modern macro is built on sand because of the Cambridge Capital controversy or whatever. those feel like attempts to say "the way we're doing economics is wrong" but is that warranted or useful if we're trying to say that the real insights of Marx are the places where he's doing something beyond just "these guys are doing economics wrong." Given the whole thing about the "categories of bourgeois economics" in the section on commodity fetishism, do we not have to follow the shifts in those categories, rather than say "well only the earlier categories were actually right."
in any case. re: the glorious-revolution posting from User @'ed Above I think it's interesting to look at this pivot to examining maybe something like more concrete a) financial technologies and b) policy as something important and like. idk I guess i've been personally meaning to tackle something like broader longue durée history. and I would really hope to end up with something like world-systems theory but more informed by a more critical approach to the economic concepts involved.

wanna rant more about my shitty roommate who prided themselves on being an ancom, but did not have a job, never contributed to the rent, i bought all their food (they were vegan too so i had to buy shit that was way more expensive than what i would usually eat) and they stole alcohol from me all the time as well, (also reminder im disabled and this person was not, but i was still providing for both of us), and they would do coke on my coffee table without wiping up the residue or cleaning up their vomit off the bathroom floor, they never cleaned a single dish or vacuumed the floor, they would play their guitar late into the night and early in the morning not caring that i had to work and needed the sleep, and then when i finally put my foot down and told them they needed to leave they CALLED THE COPS AND LIED SAYING I WAS TRYING TO KILL MYSELF so i would get arrested and they could steal my shit while i was gone and move back in with their parents. and this was all after i gave them a second chance after they had fucked me over so badly 4 years before in MY band that i started by not telling me they were replacing me with a new bassist and when i confronted them about it because they posted a song i didnt play on, blocked me instead of telling me they were an asshole that backstabbed me, and then kept making revenue off of the band that i started and i saw none of it. youve got a hello kitty says acab sticker, sure, but what actions are you taking in your day-to-day life to do your part? everyone wants to be a commie until they have to be communal.

Brutalist social housing anti-communist hate is funny and wrong because
It's always pictures in the winter, and since most of these blocks were built next to parks and such (evil commies forcing you to walk amongst trees) it already looks very grey
It's always pictures of places that are especially unmaintained in the present. I do wonder if there was any significant series of events like 30 years ago that could have caused social housing to fall into disrepair. If anything it's impressive that even the most abandoned blocks still stand, it's a testament to how robustly they were built.
Conversely, it's never pictures of well taken care of blocks, painted nice colors and such
They never address why social housing was even built in the first place. Most places were bombed to nothing by the fascists and the soviets trying to take it back, there were massive shortages so no materials to spare for non-essential decorations
The alternative was homelessness
The rent for these blocks was 5% of the lowest salaries in the GDR. I don't have data on other eastern block countries rn, but they weren't nearly as high as any "pretty" housing in the west
They act like brutalism can't be pretty
It's not even unique to post-war socialist states

BLOOD RED | Haechan x Reader
Tumblr media
A/N: From the vaults. This is a teaser and you can find the full first chapter here. Obviously, red hair Haechan from the latest SM TOWN performance has been staying rent-free in my mind.
Summary: You're a forensic psychiatrist assigned to one of the country's high-profile criminals. You want to unravel him, but he's set on catching you in his web instead.
Warnings: crimes, blood, weapons, toxic dynamics, psychological themes, personality disorder, mental health disorder, multiple personality, possible smut, minors DNI
*******
The creaking sound of the rusty metal door made you look up from the files you were trying to read. None of the words typed there made sense to you, but still you put up the perfect facade of focus and detachment as your eyes met the trio that loomed in the threshold of the room's entrance. Two burly guards—no less than six feet in height—crowded the door, the taser and guns on their sides bulking up their already thick frames. They looked like sentinels shipped straight from alcatraz with their intimidating figures, and yet it was not them that piqued your interest the most. Subtly, your dark eyes moved a little lower, the shadow flickering behind them only partly covered by the gleam of your glasses.
Your gaze was met by the equally intense stare of the boy in the middle of the small party, a young man in his early twenties with a shocking head of bright red hair. His locks were messy, with some falling over his eyes, but even that couldn't disguise the way he looked at you—calm, but with a chilling edge only those trained on your job can blatantly notice. You looked at him steadily, your face never changing, even as his gaze bore on you from a distance. He seemed to be deep in thought too, like he was trying to read you off, but finally, the tips of his lips quirked into a knowing smile that made goosebumps rise at the back of your neck.
"You have 15 minutes. Do anything stupid and we'll fry your brain."
You watched as one of the guards roughly pushed the boy into the room before hauling back the heavy metal door closed behind them. It took you everything not to flinch as it slammed shut, the sound echoing around the room like a threat. You stared at it momentarily, your heartbeat hard against your throat.
"Such ugly brutes, aren't they? Their visuals fit this hellish place."
The lilting, teasing tone made you snap your attention back to the boy who was still standing in the middle of the room. The interview cell only had a grainy yellow light illuminating the place and it threw stark shadows now to the rest of his lithe frame. His features are unexpectedly soft—almost pretty—but the way he smiled and drank you in gave him a wildish edge that teased the edges of your flight and fight response. As a seasoned forensic psychologist who has built a career in profiling some of the most dangerous criminals, you know exactly of his type.
A mastermind predator. The worst of his kind.
"Please take a seat. Lee Haechan, am I right?"
Something changed in the light of his eyes as you called out his name. It was quick, but you caught it anyway before he moved towards the chair across from you. For the first time, you noticed the black choker just peeking underneath the collar of his overalls, a green light beeping faintly on a rectangular piece of metal fixed there. You took it in quietly despite the chill that it brought to your veins. Shock collars. So that's what the guards have been talking about earlier.
"I like your lipstick."
His voice sounded casual when he spoke again, but it was enough for you to straighten your back in slight tension. His hooded eyes were on your lips, and he deliberately smirked before he raised his gaze to meet yours. He subtly ran his tongue over his lower lip as he seemed to try to keep his smile from widening.
"It's the color of blood."
"Do you like blood?" You asked, grateful for the steady voice that came out of you.
"I'm not particularly against it."
"Is that why you committed three arson cases, four bombings, and ten mass cyanide crimes across the city?"
His brows raised, impressed.
"You know my dating profile. That's very sweet of you."
"Answer the question, please."
He laughed.
"Princess, none of those drew any blood, but if you're asking that question to confirm my love for violence, then yes, I did them all."
A slow but measured breath slowly left you. When his case was turned over to you for handling, you've already drawn a specific image of him in your head. Manic, crazy, and reckless—serial, high-profile offenders like him usually fall in those kinds of buckets. The boy in front of you now is the exact opposite of what you were expecting, calm, measured, and a hundred percent aware of his actions. What he has is a specific kind of madness, the worst of what you know of.
He knows what you are trying to do, and you know you need to change your tactic if you want to break through his cracks.
"You sound so confident of the crimes you've done," you said slowly as you flipped through his file. You stopped at the last page which contains the record of his last court hearing.
"Very strange, especially since you gave an insanity plea to the courts," your eyes deliberately met him now to see his reaction. Slowly, you leaned closer to the table, palms flat on the cold metal surface. "Tell me, Haechan, is that just a part of your act? Because you had a lot of people pretty much convinced, with them sending me here and all."
Silence settled in the stale air between you, thick and tense. He looked at you blankly, before his gaze momentarily slipped again to your blood red lips.
"The insanity plea was not a lie. At least that's what Haechan thinks," he said slowly, humor lacing his voice. His smile widened as his eyes trailed up your face. The way his expression changed made a chill run down your spine. If not for your sheer training, you wouldn't have had it in you to ask your next question.
"What do you mean—"
"He is right. He is insane. Crazily fucked up, if I must say. But that's just him, that poor boy whose name you've been calling me with."
Your jaw slacked as his words sank in. This couldn't be what you were thinking. When the federal office called you in, you thought you would simply meet another mentally unhinged convict. You were about to speak through the lump in your throat when he also leaned over, his face now only inches from yours.
"But I'm different. I'm the sane one. And my name…"
"Is Lee Donghyuck."

Here’s one of my favorite things I’ve drawn. A couple years ago but it still holds up for me. There’s definitely a quite a few areas I would retouch but I wanna keep this in its final state. Please look at all of the donation posts I’ve linked and spread the word about all of them so the OPs can get the help they need. This drawing is all about US healthcare so it’s only right to shout out the people the system hurts the most, which is to say people without funds.
