!!! ALIVE ROWAN !! Would she be pro-Anora? Pro-alistair? Pro herself?
alive rowan is one of my fav dao au concepts ever
i could see her going either way!! on the one hand, alistair is her husband’s bastard (i maintain forever and ever that they were cowards for killing off rowan before alistair was born especially as it’s not at all what was implied in the game, so this au lets us actually deal with that) who she doesn’t know, while anora is probably a beloved daughter-in-law she’s known since childhood. on the other, rowan’s brother eamon is the one trying to put alistair on the throne, and rowan siding with the mac tirs in any way is hugely complicated by loghain having left rowan’s son to die, which is Insane with all the history there
arguably rowan has as much right to the throne by marriage as anora does and i could see her being presented as an unorthodox third option to complicate things even further, but she doesn’t really seem like the type to push for that

Fandom: Dragon Age (pre-Origins) Characters/pairings: Maric x OC Chapter: 6/8 Rating: T Chapter CW: pregnancy Fic summary:
Hoping to cool off his charged relationship with Queen Rowan, Maric Theirin has taken his son Cailan to Redcliffe under the guise of a royal progress to acquaint the prince with his future kingdom. When word comes from Denerim that the queen has fallen ill and that tensions are running high thanks to an impending Orlesian embassy, the pleasant trip loses its charm, and bad quickly turns to worse. The only comfort in this sea of madness comes in the form of Gwawr, a Chasind healer working in the castle kitchens. Well aware of his duties and determined not to take advantage, there is nevertheless something beguiling about her, and as their time together wears on, Maric finds himself facing a choice that could have dire consequences for himself, his family, and the kingdom he has struggled for so long to build. Or, how Maric met and fell in love with Alistair’s mother.
14th Guardian
My lord Arl Eamon,
Allow me to overlook the usual formalities. I regret not having a chance to speak with you before I left Denerim, but the importance of my words here cannot be understated. Perhaps it has already come to your attention that His Majesty, King Maric, has found regard in one of your servants: the herbalist who attended Prince Cailan in his illness during the summer. Perhaps what you do not know is the extent to which she has taken this fondness and enjoined the king to serve herself. I would go so far as to say she has acted in a manner not unheard of in these Chasind witches, and charmed him out of good sense.
It is not my desire to gossip about His Majesty’s affairs, but perhaps my lord has already seen the signs of warning in their conduct. This ill-advised infatuation has the potential to cause great damage to Ferelden, and to the state of Queen Rowan’s delicate health. It is my fear that, if she should learn of the affair, it will cause her great suffering not only in the anguish caused by knowledge of it, but also in the secondary effect of hastening the progress of her illness. I write to implore your aid in this matter, for your sister’s sake and for the good of the Ferelden she worked so hard to see freed. His Majesty must see sense before this woman turns his head completely to her whims.
I await your response and stand ready to heed my lord’s advice.
Faithfully,
Loghain Mac Tir, Teyrn of Gwaren

Since we're being sad about Loghain this morning and I made myself sad writing already. Let's talk about Rowan and Anora.
Rowan was a knight. She was a fighter. She wore heavy armour. She led cavalry charges.
Anora is a knight. She's a fighter. She wears heavy armour. She doesn't take shit from anyone and while she's quiet and composed with Loghain's frozen temper most of the time, I bet she can blow up spectacularly, like Rowan.
So when Loghain looks at Cailan he sees Maric. He sees the ghost of the man he loved and hoped that it was everything good distilled in him.
And when he looks at his daughter, fighting in that heavy armour, taking no shit and being a noble daughter adapt at playing Ferelden politics, she reminds him of Rowan. The ghost of the woman he loved.
And in the way history repeats itself, they're betrothed from a young age. They have to fight battles while young. One of them dies before the other.
And Loghain can do nothing once more but watch and try to keep it all togther.

a bit of a hc for timelines with dead Connor | non-human Inquisitor
... the name is Rowan Guerrin. If you would have any information - any, I would be most grateful. May the Maker watch over you.
Not an arl but a desperate father,
Eamon Guerrin
There where not as much children, as they feared there would be, but still more than it wouldn't be hard to look at. The youngest must be not more then 7-years-old, quiet, clinging to the robes of the elder ones. 14-years-olds, with shy colored sparkles in their palms, shielding with their tiny bodies their friends, brothers, sisters. 19-years-olds, hot-headed, meeting Inquisition banners with ice and flame. Mages that were left after Venatori recruiting had to be scraped off the borders of Orlais and Ferelden, pulled out of cesspits, rescued from rocks and pitchforks, taken from simpathetic parties.
***
Not this time.
Thought circling in mind, blocking every other. Not this time, dammit. The child will live, or there's gonna be a very personal conversation about the soul of the girl with this Maker of theirs. She looks no older then 10. Curly hair with a slight ginger tint to them. Tired brown gaze. Children aren't suppose to have such a look to the eye. Children should observe the world with curiosity, naivity and silly joy. Not as they've seen the worst the world can offer.
She is calm for now, peaceful even. The healer must have put her under some spell. She blinks slowly, long lashes tremble like candle light catching a slight breeze. Little chest rises infrequently, barely noticable. Pale lips part ever so slightly to take a small gasp. Empty gaze rarelly follows some object just to loose interest in a blink.
She saved them. She saved them all by the mere desire to reach out to the light.
When the Inquisition found them, the little ones were dying from hunger and exhaustion, but were surprisingly calm and warmed. It's really hard to detect the magic aura at such a young age but nontheless all the kids gathered around the girl as if she were their little saving bonfire. And she was in a way, as though returning their trust by warming and nourishing. Little one managed to perform one of the advanced healing spells barely having mastered the magic alphabet.
Bull lays a hand on Inquisitor's shoulder. No flinch: too concerned to care that he sneaked up like that.
- With children it's always the hardest.
Be ready for anything, boss.
But the only thought that cicles the mind, blocking every other one.
- We will see.
Not this time.

Fandom: Dragon Age (pre-Origins) Characters/pairings: Maric x OC Chapter: 5/8 Rating: T Chapter CW: terminal illness Fic summary:
Hoping to cool off his charged relationship with Queen Rowan, Maric Theirin has taken his son Cailan to Redcliffe under the guise of a royal progress to acquaint the prince with his future kingdom. When word comes from Denerim that the queen has fallen ill and that tensions are running high thanks to an impending Orlesian embassy, the pleasant trip loses its charm, and bad quickly turns to worse. “Bowed maybe, but I don’t think you’re broken.” She stroked his hair again, and the absurd combination of word and gesture brought forth a harsh, bitter laugh.
“Yes, the crown is the only thing a king should bow to.” He caught her hand. “Gwawr –”
She stood above him, lips parted, eyes a brittle gleam in the winter light. Before he could lose his nerve or think, he turned his desperation into a kiss pressed to the base of her thumb.
“Your Majesty…”
He no longer cared where they were, or who occupied the room next door. Rowan had had her paramour for years – he never begrudged her seeking happiness away from him, but why could he not be allowed the same?
“Gwawr, if I weren’t king – broken and bent as I am – could you love me? Would you call me Maric?” “I…” She held his face, her hands sweet with the smell of herbs. “Maric. I do.”

there’s enough (deserved) shitting on Eamon but it’s INSANE to me that i only just found out Teagan can apparently marry Kaitlyn (the girl from the Redcliffe chantry whose little brother ran off to get their grandfather’s sword)
this same girl who, if you talk to her after the battle in Redcliffe, mentions that she and her brother are both going to end up in an orphanage now that their parents are gone

What the people want they get! @mxkelsifer requested my Why Rowan is a horse girl list.
Again the horse girl list:
horses are love, horses are life
You will put your horse above people and everything else in your life (this includes the love for your country and romantic partners)
You will find a way to talk about horses
Horses are friends not food (you are willing and ready to starve instead of eating your favorite horse)
You have no survival instincts when it comes to horses
You played horse as a child
You have more horse friends than people friends (you spent more time with them than people)
The barn is practically your home
basically we're weird and passionate to a degree that everyone finds concerning
And now Rowan:
She's noble and horses were a matter of independence and freedom. She might have learned to fight but her early betrothal to the prince also still heralds some form of women don't fight all that much class hierarchy no matter what the codex says. We all played the game. When atop a horse Rowan can be someone else, she can fight, maybe even her inferior strength most men like to wield over her vanishes because everyone who dares to insinuate that will get trampled by her horse. Horses are freedom.
Horses can be ridden by everyone, she could do it in a dress or in armour. It's all about what she can do, not what she's supposed to do. It's about expressing herself in a way that doesn't have to be unladylike when she wants to and is still useful to the war. It's something that's just hers.
first time we meet her is on a horse, as a fucking cavalry knight (saving Maric's ass) introducing someone on a horse always means something and introducing someone as a cavalry knight means that person knows how to RIDE. Riding is hard. Riding in heavy armour and fighting? That's badass. So yeah, Rowan gets introduced as a badass horse woman. She'll find a way to talk about them if under the guise of strategy and war.
She leads a cavalry charge, saving Loghain's and Maric's ass, and generally being badass. Like leading the charge is a big deal, cavalry charges in general are a big deal. Not every horse is a war horse, so she probably as one or two specific mounts and while knights do have squires she strikes me as the type to take care of her mount well. Again, she needs them for the war, she won't eat them.
Oh that one definitely. Rowan might be noble but because of the rebellion and everything she grew up wilder than most kids. I bet she mounted a horse really young and did some really dumb and reckless shit when no one was looking.
This one just yes, probably with Maric as well
See, Rowan is known for her prickly temper and having to prove herself to her father and her men (which we know she did expertly), but being a woman in fighting business is hard and some days she'll probably just go hang out with the horses because they get her
I mean, she lived on the road a lot, though I can actually see her not really being a barn person
definitely, both as the woman that loves the freedom she gets on horseback (away from the war, away from responsibilities, be someone else just for a moment) and as a cavalry commander
I might be projecting a bit on Rowan with the fighting and horse girl stuff but that woman has about as much character as flat carboard. She deserves some spice!
Also Maric canonically is bad at riding, so he's the perfect useless and clueless barn boyfriend always running after Rowan
