I think the most pertinent, fundamental question to ask at this point is: How canon do we want to make the 1981 musical Cats by Andrew Lloyd Webber to Better Bones? Since you've done so fantastically well at fleshing out alternate but no-less-viable systems of belief, that door has been left wiiiide open. Stripped of the zany dance numbers and stage actors in copious makeup, you can't deny that the underlying Jellicle cat religion / Heavyside Layer wouldn't be out of place. Don't lie to us. Don't you dare.

We don't know when the musical takes place, but as for where, the Jellicle Cats and their religion are centralized in a junkyard somewhere in London. Depending on how far their area of influence extends, there could be a few cats in a sect or two of BloodClan who practice the faith of a land to the south, or otherwise believe in the existence of the Heavyside Layer. Or say, the junkyard is done away with in the late 90's and a diaspora of Jellicle Cats spreads across the land. Their descendants hope one day to make the pilgrimage for one last ball, and are invariably seen as Rather Offputting by everyone. (In-story it'd all amount to rare sequiturs from a nameless extra or two which increase in probability the further one heads south.)

Hey bonefall hey, do you think Skyclan has a word for this? It'd be a corruption of the English "dear little [cats], of which "Jellicle" is a romanization. How would you say Jellicle with Clanmew pronunciation?

If you're going to put the Jellicles in the BB Universe, you fucking BETTER be taking inspiration from the cancelled 1997 Steven Spielberg animated musical adaptation which places the cats in postwar London sometime circa 1945 and implied that the cats had heavily cultural emphasis on song, dance, and performance

Which btw would place Grizabella's Jellicle Ball pretty firmly in the Code Era of my adaptation (built around the canonical tidbit that Turtle Tail was hit by a Ford Model T meaning the Dawn Era was pre-war).

It would be before the main Warrior cast is born (Except Holly due to infamous Time Travel Shenanigans)-- but Jellicles, after all, were there when the Sphinx was built, so it's safe to assume they'd still be around in the future as a cultural group.

Really the biggest barrier is that they live in bloodbourne London. Too far southeast to communicate with Clan cats or even BloodClan, who are northwest. Park Cats are from further south, but no further south than Gloucestershire at most.

So, serious answer, they can absolutely be canon in this universe, or at the very least they can be slotted in easily. I built a brand new religion system exactly to accommodate the existence of multiple cultural groups and honor the afterlives of each.

In fact, Jellicles fit perfectly into it.

They have a heaven (Heavyside Layer) but no hell, exactly the way that a "vanilla" type religion can form on its own. Really there's just one question-- what's their leader power?

Old Deuteronomy...

Is said to have lived many lives in succession (possible continual reincarnation?)

May choose the next cat to ascend to the Heavyside Layer (immediate patronification?)

But at the same time, there are some cats who seem to display magical powers, akin to the Sister's power distribution system. Mr. Mistoffelees is one, able to perform simple magical tricks. As far as I remember, there are two.

Conjuration (Ability to change the location of an object in space)

Levitation

These both seem like versions of the same power, really. It makes sense, too, that culturally they would value agility to the point of veneration. It ties into dancing, avoiding cars and dogs, stealing things.

In any case though-- you begin to lose these sorts of abilities the further you go from a group, without some kind of token. The Sisters are the example I've written so far; Tree needs some kind of item in order to see ghosts when he's not near the rest of the Sisters. The Jellicles are also a pretty proud group, I can't see them making these "tokens" for any old wanderer.

So maybe there's just a few of them, and Macavity has one stolen?

hmmmm... Maybe those reincarnations have to do with who's supposed to Hold The Token, and Old Doot has basically been one of them for eons. Maybe Mistoffelees was the most recent reincarnation from the Jellicle Ball?

Anyway TL;DR yeah Jellicle cats can exist in Better Bones, they're just too far away to interact with Clan cats.

Munkustrap for the ask game? 🥺

1. Canon I outright reject

I CANNOT find the post but there's this one Jack Rebaldi interview where he mentions something about how 'no one likes Munkustrap because he's the leader and nobody really likes the guy always giving you orders' and as much as I love Jack Rebaldi's Munk I just don't agree with that interpretation. Everybody loves Munk. To Me.

2. A canon or headcanon hill I will die on

On the flip side of Munk actor interviews, Michael Gruber saying

'[Munk is] entrusted with giving the information to the other, maybe younger cats who have not been to the Jellicle Ball before. He gets up and says exactly what they're here to do. He's also caretaker of the kittens. He wants to make sure everybody's safe; in all the Macavity scares, he's there to protect the tribe. So he is the protector'

about Munk is really fundamental for me and how I see Munk, Munk's role in the tribe, and Munk's role in the story.

3. Obscure headcanon

His owner is an old unmarried lady who lives in an apartment by herself; she calls him Felix and he feels responsible for her bc she 'has no colony'.

4. Favorite line

Michael Gruber's American-ass delivery of 'or hairier' in Pekes is my favorite comedy moment in any and all versions of Cats I've seen, it gets me every time.

5. Best personality trait

He cares, deeply and personally, about pretty much everyone, and never hesitates to put himself out there to assist if someone needs it. He's a natural leader and a quick decision maker even under pressure, but he's still patient and compassionate with everyone he meets-- even when he's stressed or angry, he still makes efforts to be kind.

6. Worst personality trait

Munk physically cannot remove himself from a situation if he thinks he's needed, even if he's actively making it worse. He also is one of those people who refuses to let people just vent at him and tries to solve everyone's problems even if they don't want a solution to their problem.

7. Age/height/weight headcanon

Munk is shorter than Tugger but significantly stronger than him, so he can just scoop Tugger up in a fireman's carry and remove him from a situation if he's being annoying.

8. Unpopular opinion about them

Honestly I think I'm even more normie about Munk than about Tugger. I don't think I have any truly unpopular hot takes about him.

9. Scene that first made me love (or hate) the character

I do love his part of Jenny's song-- the way he's singing directly to the kittens on the ground, and his section of the song has this lullaby feeling to it that's just so calming and tender. I really love how for that song it's a duet (sort of) between a young dude and an older lady, but the older lady gets the snappy upbeat part and the younger dude gets the slow & sweet part. It really just establishes Munk as this soft and nurturing figure from the beginning.

10. Best moment on screen (or in the book)

Bway revival Macavity fight imo. It's just so damn good.

11. Faceclaim for the role

Michael Gruber is rlly my Munk, even the unique shape of his wig in 98 sticks out to me as a Fundamental Munk Thing™.

In human aus he's kind of this lighter-skinned 'racially ambiguous' kind of guy with dark hair, smile lines, a little bit of stubble, and a frequently worn sweater vest.

12. Crack headcanon

I feel like his human version would be a Beyonce fan, but like in the cringiest middle-aged-dad way possible.

13. Dumbest thing they’ve ever done

Munk's always been a pretty level-headed and mature guy, even when he was young, so there isn't much that he's done that I can label as 'stupid' except perhaps jumping into dangerous situations to protect someone without considering his own safety first. My hc for how Plato joined the Junkyard starts with Munk running straight into traffic on a busy street bc he saw baby Plato abandoned between two lanes and petrified from fear.

Random ass kitten Munk had never seen before in his life, and he charged right into mortal danger without a second's thought about it. Brave, but also stupid.

14. Most heroic moment

Munk's doing heroic shit all the time. My previous answer is actually a good example, plus, you know, he's tangled with Macavity more than once.

15. Worst thing they’ve ever done

Munkustrap Has Never Done Anything Wrong, Ever, In His Entire Life.

16. Deepest darkest secret they won’t even admit to themselves

I don't know if this is 'never admit to himself' levels but Munk wonders a lot if he shares some blame for how Macavity ended up. He and Mac grew up together, and while he always knew his older brother had a temper, he really and truly thought Mac was just rough around the edges, and that he really did care about Munk and the rest of the tribe deep down. But when Macavity betrayed the tribe and started doing Evil Deeds, Munk was left wondering if Macavity had always been rotten deep down, and hid it from all of them for all those years, or if he'd just.... snapped somehow, from the pressure of being Deuteronomy's heir, or something, and maybe there was something Munk could have done to help him before things got too bad.

As is, Munk may never know.

17. Quotes, songs, poems, etc. that I associate with them

18. What they’d go to see a therapist about

Stress & setting too-high standards for himself, probably.

19. Vices/bad habits

Never resting, for one. He basically never gets enough sleep. It's funny, in my human aus both Tugger and Mac suffer from insomnia, but Munk is oftentimes just as sleep deprived as those two despite being the only Deut bro without insomnia, just because he's always doing things. That man is responding to his work emails at 1:24AM for no goddamn reason.

20. Scars

He's got plenty of scars, most of them not huge, but he's been in all sorts of fights and even if asked he wouldn't even be able to identify how or when he got them.

21. Drink of choice (not just alcoholic)

I think he drinks wine in one scene in my human/celeb/soulmate fic, otherwise he's a real coffee man.

22. Best physical feature

I don't know what other cats would consider his best feature! By cat standards Munk is a handsome dude, but kind of in a normal, average way. Just, you know, a handsome guy you'd see on the street. Honestly I think his general vibes are his most attractive trait, though that's not physical. But nobody in all the world can look at a large muscular man being sweet and cute and patient with little kids and go 'nah 3/10 for me'.

23. If they were a scented candle, what would they smell like?

I'm thinking like... forest or campfire or something like that.

24. Most annoying habit

Asking someone to complete a task for him and then changing his mind and completing it himself before they can get to it.

25. 3 things they’d want to take with them if they were dropped off in the middle of nowhere

Again I need more details for this question but a book for sure regardless.

26. What they would do if stuck in an elevator with [insert character of your choice from the same fandom]

Munk I think is a pretty boring character as far as getting-stuck-in-an-elevator shenanigans go. Except for Macavity, that would probably be interesting. Anyone else would probably just be the two trying to escape together and then rock paper scissors for the next six hours.

27. Their guilty pleasure

Human Munk probably has a variety of snackies he considers guilty pleasures, like special chocolates or whatever. Cat Munk would probably say it's 'oh sometimes I go off somewhere in the Junkyard by myself and just sit for a while and enjoy the silence' and the person he's talking to is like THATS NOT A GUILTY PLEASURE THATS JUST KEEPING YOURSELF SANE

28. How they feel about [insert character of your choice from the same fandom]

I headcanon Jemima as being Bomba and Macavity's daughter, though this is a fact Bomba very much keeps to herself-- she's only admitted it to two people and Munk is not one of them. However Munk.... has eyes & he's perfectly aware of who Jemima's father is, though he's never gotten Bomba to actually admit it. This kind of creates a. .. . not 'weird' relationship, but a kind-of sad one, because Munkustrap knows he's this delightful little girl's uncle but she doesn't know it in return, and her finding out will probably be more devastating than anything, because it would come with the knowledge of who her father is.

So Munk just kind of has to treat Jemima just like he does the rest of the kittens and keep the knowledge of their relationship to himself, though he's always wanted a big family.

29. Eating habits

Munk is a Deuteronomy, so in both cat and human aus he can eat for fucking forever. Human Munk likes to cook and bake as well, and he and Demeter make their dinner together every afternoon, and very rarely order takeout.

30. Sleeping habits

Whoops, I already talked about this. He doesn't sleep as much as he should, but he sleeps soundly whenever he does get around to putting his head down.

31. If the had a tumblr what would it look like?

Probably politics. Plus some pictures or art or such that he finds interesting.

32. Something guaranteed to make them smile/laugh

Kittens being cute will very easily get a smile out of him, though he doesn't laugh-laugh terribly often. One thing people don't know about him is that Tugger suffering something that he 1000% brought upon himself absolutely will get an evil grin or two out of Munk.

33. Something guaranteed to make them cry

Just like Tugger's answer, Deuteronomy's death. Munk's not a big crier I don't think, but when he does cry he's usually pretty quiet.

34. How they react when they are feeling X emotion (sad, angry, excited, scared, etc.—can specify as many as you like)

Most of these I think would result in Munk throwing himself into his work with vigor to get his mind off of the Bad Feelings. Munk's not quick to anger but he is quick to calm down after an outburst, and his excitement is usually going to be expressed through singing or dancing.

35. Their idea of a perfect day

This man will honestly be like 'yeah the perfect day would be a bunch of relaxation with my tribemates watching the kittens play and so on and so forth' and then refuse to stop working for ten minutes to make it happen.

36. Their favorite season

Late winter/early spring, the time of the Jellicle Ball and the incoming of the warm season.

37. What they really think about themselves

Munk struggles a lot wondering if he makes the right decisions as a leader and measures himself up to Deuteronomy all the time. He really wishes he could do more even though he's already always busy, and worries a lot whether the trust that the tribe places in him is justified.

38. Favorite holiday

Christmas bitch. Probably also a thanksgiving bitch as well.

39. Favorite game

He probably likes Monopoly. Like an insane person.

40. Favorite book

I imagine he likes reading but I'm not sure what I would say is his favorite book! He probably likes books about history and such a lot, and the occasional historical fiction.

41. If they could have lunch with anyone in the world (living or dead, from any fictional universe or the real world), who would it be?

Probably his mother, whom he doesn't remember well.

42. 3 comfort items

UHH for human aus: he loves the old scrapbooks from when he and his brothers were kids, his favorite flannel jacket, and uh........ does his wife count as a comfort item,,,,

43. 3 favorite foods and 3 they despise

You KNOW Munk has got to be a steak guy. Unlike Tugger he can probably enjoy a good salad, and box mac and cheese is probably one of those things he whips up every once in a while for childhood nostalgia reasons. There probably aren't a ton of foods Munk even dislikes, much less despises.

44. Their happiest memory

Like I mentioned before, this question is hard for me. I hc that he and Demeter have triplets at some point after the events of the musical, so maybe when they were born.

45. Their favorite celebrity

He seems like the type of guy to like Elvis, idk why.

46. The person they most admire

Deuteronomy. I feel like that one is easy lmao

47. Their dream job

I don't think he really had big career aspirations, more of a family man.

48. Scariest moment of their life

Probably when Macavity betrayed the tribe.

He seems like a stuffed elephant kind of guy. Or maybe his collection of the little green plastic army men.

I don't think he really has any memories he's consciously or subconsciously blocked out. There are things he tries not to think about or remember, but not on the level of fully blocking anything from his head.

🧠 Share a headcanon/theory about the show that you like!

So many, but I really love all the hcs about the mating bond :) and the pas de deux. Also any and all headcanons about the Everlasting Cat and how religion works, I've honestly thougt so much about how the whole thing works and it's such an interesting thing to think about. For example, cats are reborn nine times and then just kinda. i dont actually know what happened after that lmao. bad example. also cryptid!misto <3. He be immortal and meeting the reincarnations of cats. and magical. speaking of magic, another of my fave hcs is that all jellicles have magic aside from their terpsichorean powers. like, there are big flashy, obvious magicks like those of misto/mac and the implied magicks of cori/tanto/jem but i also like the idea of subtle magic. i used this example in mistocord before, but skimble's magic being that he knows exactly when the midnight mail will leave and that he can predict which passengers will travel on the train again.

Griz as Munk and Tugger's mom/Deut's mate. I prefer her as Bomba and Deme (and occasionally Vic)'s mother instead :3

Tumblr ate the post so I’m just gonna update and post it again, this time for @the-cat-at-the-theatre-door ‘s oldies’ week!

I’ve collected speculative evidence that fuels my theory that Bustopher Jones is the Everlasting Cat

The strongest piece of evidence is that the melody and instrumentation of the verse Bustopher sings in his song is the same as the part in the Prologue (and Ascent) where the cats are all praising the Everlasting Cat

He’s universally adored and respected, and very much treated as an authority by kittens and adults alike.

Very Big To Contain Power

When I mentioned that Bustopher, Old Deuteronomy, and Gus originally were all played by one actor, my mother said that they were like “the father, the son, and the Holy Spirit” and ya know, she’s got a point

I say this as a compliment; Bustopher is hedonistic, even for a cat. This could very well be interpreted as the Everlasting Cat taking a physical form specifically to enjoy the pleasures of life on earth.

Bouncing off of that, Bustopher acts the least cat-like out of all the Jellicles, and he’s quite clumsy as well. I propose that this is because he isn’t quite acclimated to living in a body.

He appears once out of nowhere and is never seen again. Where did he go? The Heaviside layer?

Going with the popular “Mistoffelees and Bustopher are related” headcanon, it makes sense that The Original Conjuring Cat has godly DNA

Grizabella headcanons under the cut!

Just wanna say thank you for sending a ask for EVERY character, it´s gonna take me a while to get through them all but I´ll will do it!

As always spelling and grammar might be wrong since english is not my first language.

Backstory/family:

Grizabella was born into the tribe, she had a litter brother but he didn't make it. Her father was never there since he was a street cat and didn´t belong in a tribe. Grizabellas mother however was a beautiful grey queen adored by the other Jellicles.

Grizabella and her mother seemed to have a wonderful relationship but behind closed doors her mother would get mad at Grizabella if she ever did anything to ruin her glamorous reputaion. She would make sure Grizabella was always the most beautiful in the room.

Her mother left suddenly when her human family moved and took Grizabellas mother with them.

Later in life she mated with Old Deutoronomy and they had 3 kittens, the oldest Macavity, then Munkustrap and last Rum Tum Tugger.

Grizabellas favorite was Macavity by a long shot, his magic made him special and that in turn made her special, because well, she birthed him. However both Munkustrap and Tugger were severly neglected by her since "they had nothing to bring compared to magic".

This put a strain on her and Deutoronomys relationship and it all came ahead the day Macavity was banished. She ultimetly desided to go with him. Leaving the rest of her family and tribe betrayed and sadden.

Years later Macavity was established as the notorious criminal "The Hidden Paw". But Grizabella refused to see that part of him, delution kicking in real bad.

During her time with Macavity she would meet the two sisters Demeter and Bombalurina. They were the ones who opened Grizabellas eyes too how horrible her son really was when he started abusing them both right in front of her.

But instead of helping them, she escaped by herself and became the street cat we later see in the musical.

Pairings:

Of course Deuteronomy and Grizabella is my main pairing but the idea of Grizabella and Bustopher being together before Grizabella became the street cat is just *chefs kiss*

Personality:

Don't really know what to say here as I've never really thought about just that. I'll just write her 3 words since that's basically how I see her.

Proud, hurt, indomitable.

Though I will add that before she left Macavity she was definitely delusional.

Plotbunnies:

Definitely what happened when Macavity left and why Grizabella came with him. Another one is a fanfic with her, Demeter and Bombalurina while with Macavity. I just feel the angst flow through me.

Food:

She loves being spoiled with fancy food, so anything from humans is always a win. She however hates dry catfood and animals she needs to hunt for herself.

If they had a human home:

She would live in a villa with a rich woman who would spoil her at every turn. "Yes, my cat has her own room? So what? Don't yours?"

What song(s) would fit their character:

This one took me a while to figure out since I would say a song for her would be a more sad song... and I don't really listen to that. But one song that I found I feel like fits well with Grizabella and Deut during the musical.

ramble ab ur favourite moment/s in 1998 (for the ask)

Jellicle Songs is the most energetic banger that gets me ready for the whole experience of watching Cats again. And then there's just...John Partridge being the hottest Tugger with the biggest rockstar vibes singling out Jemima (his favorite kitten) and gently silencing Etcetera's fangirl screams. Demeter and Bombalurina giving us this haunting duet about Grizabella. And then just...the way everyone's voices blend together so beautifully during Old Deuteronomy (and especially with Munkustrap and Tugger's duet bringing that perfect brotherly vibe) and Tugger bowing to his Papa in a way that makes it obvious to the audience that he respects him probably more than anyone else in the Junkyard. How excited everyone is to be able to see their leader again, the happiness in the kittens' eyes as they hug him and sing his praises. Everyone being dorks during the Pekes and Pollicles number. The way Platoria are just so in love. The Jellicle Ball, particularly the moment when Bomba interrupts the young Toms so that the Queens can dance, the way the Toms advance on the Queens, and the beautiful lifts (the Tuggerlurina lift gives me life!!!), how perfectly in-sync everyone is and the expressions of satisfaction and triumph when they nail certain moves (again, Veerle Jemima just makes me smile, she looks so happy to be here!). And then Jemima is singing again and I tear up and my heart hurts because I love her so much and she's just the sweetest, most compassionate, empathetic little thing ever. I can't forget the Macavity song and dance, which is probably my favorite sequence of the whole musical. The inherent sexuality of the song and dance, the realization that Demeter and Bombalurina have both been in relationships with Macavity, the way they play off each other, and just the fact that we get another moment for all the ladies in the cast to show off their moves and sing together. The way Munkustrap and Bombalurina defend Demeter and Jemima just warms my heart and validates all my headcanons for them, and the little Demestrap moment after Deuteronomy's capture is just perfect and lovely and everything I want out of Cats. And then we get Tugger and Misto being attatched at the hip, with Tugger singing Misto's praises and mimicking almost every move. How proud and emotional Tugger is when Mistoffelees brings Old Deuteronomy back (complete with Misto jumping in Old Deut's arms and giving him an affectionate lick). And then, of course, the whole of Memory. The moment when everything comes full-circle and the Jellicles forgive Grizabella. Jemima's song of encouragment (again with the crying and realizing just how compassionate and empathetic this little baby kitten is). The fact that in the moment, it doesn't really matter what she's done, just that she's forgiven. How honored and humbled and happy everyone is after they've touched her. The fact that she gets to go to the Heavyside Layer, and that now she can start life anew...to have a chance at living without a past that hangs around her like a dark cloud.

alonzo, tumble, and pounce would ABSOLUTELY get a song my sweet boys!!! i can see their song being about protecting the tribe and their family, something connecting with my hc of them surviving on the streets and reuniting within the Jellicles!

🎷 Have you ever seen Cats live? If more than once, which was your favorite?

i've been lucky enough to have seen it a total of four times live over the past four years!

i'd have to say that my absolute favorite time was when I saw the U.S. Tour 6 Cast in Rochester! It was their opening weekend, and it was just so much fun finally seeing the show again after theaters being closed, and everyone who follows me knows that the tour 6 cast is probably my favorite cast after the 98 one.

when I saw the show back in March, it was also a lot of fun, not just because of the cast, but because I got to finally finally meet one of my favorite mutuals irl as a complete surprise, and I also had one of the best stage door experiences of my LIFE, just standing around chatting with Michelle and Hank (also Michelle recognizing me from Rochester... the way i was so blessed)

📌 What was Cats 2019's biggest mistake, in your opinion? (OTHER than 'bad cgi') If you don't think it made any notable mistakes, what's your favorite thing about it?

making Bombalurina little more than a henchcat and making Victoria the main protagonist. I will always stand by the fact that Demeter should have been the protagonist, they could have kept the story the EXACT same (taking out the Misto romance and keeping a sweet demestrap romance) and "beautiful ghosts" is SUCH a Demeter song.

OOH okay um. surprising no one my favorite song from cats is mr mistoffelees. there are slightly different versions of this song based on whether or not the performer playing misto has a strong voice (it's such a demanding dance role that they cast it primarily based on that and if the performer isn't a very strong vocal soloist they can make allowances for that bc the dance aspect is so crucial and you need such excellent classical technique to pull off the solo) so sometimes misto sings a verse and sometimes tugger sings the whole thing. if misto sings then my favorite part of the song is his verse:

If you’re up to more bitching about the broadway revival, what are your feelings on Jennyanydots’s number? Personally I was surprised with how much I didn’t mind the new stuff at the end (though I wouldn’t say I PREFER it) but I thought the choreo during the verses was… it irritated me. I don’t remember which boot(s) I watched but it felt like Jenny did a lot more sitting, less moving than I remember her doing in the ‘98 and in the older boots I’ve seen. In general I thought the new choreo took her out of her own number a bit, which is a real shame. Just interested to know what you think, would be happy to disagree haha.

I hate it.

I don't love a lot of the revival changes, but with each song generally there's something I can be positive about? Yeah they removed the horndog parts of Tugger's song, but there's cute tuggoff and platoria dances. Yeah they made all those little changes to Macavity's song but at least they're small. Yeah they changed Misto's choreo, but at least it is admittedly exciting.

Jenny's song? Idk even the spots that aren't bad, I don't think I can point at any element of her new song and say that it isn't a downgrade.

I rewatched it just now, and I'd like to list the parts I do actually like for the sake of being fair:

Andy Huntington Jones? a very cute Munk

That bit with Misto & the little light on the floor which leads to him opening the boot

The Gumbie trio interacting with the 'mice' kittens

you're right, the end is pretty cool

That's it.

Like... let's go over what the '''original''' Jenny song does. Gumbie Cat, like a considerable number of songs in Cats, doesn't really contribute to the plot at all. Some songs do, like Misto's, but many don't. They only thing Jenny's song really 'does', arguably, is tell the audience what Munkustrap's idea of a Jellicle Choice looks like (given his lyrics at the beginning of the song).

So otherwise, all this song does is characterize Jenny.

Which the classic version does very efficiently, I think! The poem gives us an idea of her personality: she's lazy during the day and active during the night. She teaches the local varmints how to be 'upstanding' members of society. It's specifically mentioned she started a 'Beetle's Tattoo' (A tattoo is a military performance of stuff like marching bands, dancing, drill team, etc) so she has this association with a military-esque discipline. The song also talks about her and crocheting and knitting and baking, so she also has this homestead motherly vibe to her as well.

Her nature is two-fold: she's lazy but also hard-working. She's motherly but also militant. The song capitalizes on this dynamic: it starts out with a slow lullaby, and then transitions to an upbeat tune, and then goes back and forth between those two vibes until the Tattoo (aka the tap section) starts. The feeling of the music matches her personality. So does her costume change: at first she has a big floppy coat, then she switches into a flapper-like bodysuit.

The style of the Tattoo is tap, (as we all know lmao). Most songs in Cats build upon ballet, but Jenny uses tap, probably because it's a more ''''aggressive'''' (obv I use that word lightly) style of dance, unlike the flowing and effortless impression ballet tends to give. It matches the military vibe, it seems like something that might actually be in a real Tattoo, and it gives the actress the opportunity to characterize Jenny further by having her act like a little drill sergeant.

(And sometimes the tap battle is included here, which is also nice characterization. It's usually either Misto or a kitten who challenges Jenny, and I think it's hilarious that either A) Misto feels the need to clown on an old lady's tapping skills or B) Jenny rises to the occasion when a literal child tries to clown on her tapping skills. Either way, funny and defining.)

Despite ping-ponging back and forth, the song is well contained. Most of the props are made of garbage: the cockroaches are made from garbage bags, the mice masks are piping bags, the cockroaches hold spoons and forks, etc. The song also builds well: it goes as such.

Munk, alone, introduces Jenny

The revival... sort of follows this pattern. The way the Revival Gumbie was choreographed makes me think of this Blankenbuehler quote that annoyed me.

'mm yes in this play about a tribe theres a lot of tribal energy. in this play about Cats Dancing Together there's a lot of dancing in unison. lets get rid of some of that'

The Revival Gumbie takes forever to get everyone dancing together, and instead of growing momentum-- where characters keep joining the dance and it gets bigger and bigger (starting with just Munk, ending with everyone)-- it feels like a bunch of disjointed nonsense.

The beginning is mostly the same, except you're right, Jenny does do a lot of sitting there. (Also the Gumbie trio has that same thing that the Macavity song has, where they fiddled with their choreo and the changes don't do anything but also aren't that important either)

But the Revival starts to divert after that first section-- instead of the (nearly) full cast wearing cockroach costumes, three (3) characters are given 'beetle' costumes. (Which yeah, the poem mentions beetles, and yeah, the beetle costumes are made of hubcaps so it matches the garbage theme. But they look so unwieldy that the dancers can barely move, and honestly I didn't even realize they were supposed to be beetles until I saw someone on here mention it.)

But yeah, Jenny and the beetles dance together for like 3 seconds, [I just went back to check how long it is exactly? 10 fuckin seconds.] and Jenny changes costumes. It's actually a pretty smooth costume change, because I'm always so busy looking at the hubcap beetles and being annoyed by them I forget to look at Jenny, but honestly classic Cats never really sought to hide/distract from the costume change here, and tbh I feel like that showy deliberate change is relevant to her dual nature? Whatever. Not a big deal.

But anyways so Jenny and the beetles start tapping. Oh, are we going to build on this momentum? Is someone else going to join in? No. That bigass broom prop comes flying in, the beetles go off stage (and probably rip off those huge costumes), and Jenny stops dancing. Then we spend like an honest thirty seconds playing with the broom and then playing with those basketball/soccerball props while pretty much 0 dancing happens on stage at all. Jenny mostly just wanders around during this section (& you're right, she definitely does less in this version).

Then there's the 'tick tock tap' section where that big clock prop in the background makes a bunch of tick-tock noises and Jenny dances to it. While everyone just kind of watches. Which is fine I guess.

The music BUILDS UP, EVERYONE COMES ON STAGE, OH BOY ARE WE FINALLY BUILDING SOME MOMENTUM?

No. Everyone dances for five seconds and then stands there and watches Jenny dance. Some cats are ? scrubbing the floor with brushes like cinderella ?

THE MUSIC BUILDS UP AGAIN EVERYONE IS GETTING IN A LINE OOH NOW THEY'RE SPREADING OUT ARE WE FINALLY GOING TO HAVE OUR BIG FINALE?

Nope pretty much everyone just stops dancing again to watch Jenny. Also Jerrie is breakdancing for some reason.

OKAY NOW EVERYONE IS DANCING TOGETHER! HOORAY! YAHOO!

Then like 15 seconds of dancing later the clock goes off, interrupting the finale, and the song ends.

Yay.

Where classic Gumbie builds up by adding more and more dancers over time, this one just kind of slaps everyone in there and then takes everyone out, a chunk of kittens will join, then leave, a prop will come in and then out, and the Tattoo element that the song was mostly made of is pretty much gone entirely. Instead of one unified piece of choreo, it feels like getting random crap shoved in your face over and over. 'Isn't this cool? Isn't THIS cool? How about this? Or this????'

Then you have the props: only a couple cats wear bug costumes and they don't translate well and look unwieldy. The clock, balls, (tooth?)brushes, and the broom are a disjointed assembly of props. Everything in the classic song characterizes Jenny. These items have nothing to do with her-- they're not even really things you'd find in a Junkyard. What does a clock have to do with Jenny's duality between her militant and motherly nature? What about the balls? With the cleaning stuff, you can at least say she makes the mice and bugs clean, but the poem doesn't mention her making them clean, it mentions 'music, crocheting and tatting', mentions turning them into boyscouts, mentions the Beetles' Tattoo, mentions baking for them, etc.

If the stuff like the balls and the broom were cool enough that I could forgive them being just slapped in there, that'd be one thing. But I got sick of the balls like 5 seconds after they came in, and the broom didn't really do anything for me. The clock wasn't that bad, but I don't know why they took out the Tattoo and instead added these elements. The Tattoo had to do with Jenny's nature, this shit doesn't.

I get why a lot of the tapping was removed, because they added a lot of hip hop and stuff in there and you can't really cast for people who can act, sing, dance ballet, dance tap, and dance hip hop, but regardless of how much tap they decided to use (which is a creative choice, I get it) it just doesn't feel good. It builds to nothing, most of the props say and do nothing interesting, there's big chunks of the song where no dancing happens at all, and there's even bigger chunks where Jenny is the only one dancing and everyone just watches her.

Right after that quote I mentioned earlier, Andy adds, "It’s like that circus in the second grade. It’s completely labor-intensive. You’re choreographing 20 numbers instead of one number."

And like. Yeah, Andy. You're right. This does kind of feel like a circus.

Her design ik its identical to cori’s but like I’ve fallen in love with it more overtime with the 1998 movie makeup she just looks so ethereal? Especially during addressing of cats

one aspect i wish more people understood about them

That she’s fun! Like I don’t get how most of the time in older fics she portrayed as a no nonsense deadpan queen. I personally see Tantomile as being the one who’s more free spirited between her and Coricopat just look at her in rtt. Like yes she’s reserved and stuff but cmon she’s no brick wall.

one (or more) headcanon(s) i have about this character

I like to think she knows where most of the jellicles (who have humans) homes are. It’s sort of like her own protective role in the tribe. No one knows how she’s gathered this information but it’s proved to be very helpful, she doesn’t go off and tell everyone where everyone’s whereabouts are though. She only informs Munkustrap so those cats can be alerted when there’s an emergency/ when they’re needed for something. Basically she’s a professional information gatherer. also the wiki put in the word Sensitive for one of her three words and that got me thinking about whether Tantomile is sensitive emotionally or in terms of her abilities? And now I think it’s a mix of both.

Like her abilities have a sensitive wave length between her and Coricopat and they need each other to keep it balanced. (I.e why they’re near each other when they’re using them like when they sense Grizabella or old Deuteronomy)

on the emotional side of things I believe Tantomile is a little insecure about herself, like she’s aware that her and Cori are quite odd in contrast to the other jellicle’s and even passing comments about them being “weird” can sometimes upset her though she won’t show it in her face it stings. Especially when it happens so regularly.

I could pick the easy route and say Coricopat since they’re always doing something in the background, but I’m going to go with her and Rumpleteazer.

but another character I want to see her interact with more is a tie between Demeter and Old Deuteronomy.

For Demeter again, doesn’t need to be anything to big but you know just have them sit next to eachother during Gus’s song.

similar situation with old Deuteronomy, he gives her and Coricopat the signal but besides that their interactions are expectedly quite limited. I’d like it if maybe during pekes and policies Cori and tanto switch places with jemima and Victoria and get some old Deuteronomy cuddles. Yknow for funzies they’ve earned it. But maybe they can sit there during gus’s song too. I just think we deserve to see more of Tantomile and Coricopat interacting with old Deuteronomy.

ok I won’t be basic and say all of them with her and Coricopat but when her Cori were younger kittens they had serious separation anxiety, they were always worried they’d lose control of there powers if the other one wasn’t nearby. While Tantomile grew out of this Coricopat still didn’t, it’s not as bad as it was before but he still doesn’t like to be away from his twin for too long.

Sharing some of my OCs

Skadi (the mountain cat)

Breed: Norwegian Forest Cat

Three words: alert, skilful, friendly

Colours: Grey, white

How does she look like: Very big girl, long hair, very fluffy, very strong. In her Jellicle form she has VERY fluffy leg and arm warmers, a very fluffy and little bit chaotic wig, and a lot of shoulder fur. You have to tell she is a long haired cat. She also has gloves with nails, cause norwegian forest cats are known for having strong claws. And she is very tall, like Tugger/Munk/Alonzo tall.

Short story: She was brought to London by a rich couple, and she hates it in London because it’s too hot during the summer for her. During the summer she mostly stays in the air-conditioned apartment of her owners and meets the other Jellicles mostly during the winter. She spends like 5-7 years in London before her owners get a child and have to give her away because the child is allergic. Skadi moves to another family in Scotland. She really misses the other Jellicles but she is more happy with the weather there and she finds new friends in wild animals, dogs and other cats She also comes for visits during winter (with the train of course). When she is old she will return to London and have her own song about her life. She propably will get chosen as Jellice Choice.

Character: At first, she is very distant to the other Jellicles and spends her time watching them rather then interacting. At the beginning when somebody tries to nuzzle her, she pushes them away and hisses at them. But after a while she gets closer to them. Once she becomes more integrated into the tribe, she becomes very protective of the others, especially when she senses danger. She is also a great huntress but usually to lazy too hunt because her humans provide her with better quality food than some rats, pigeons or seagulls.

Where I see her as part of the play:

More of a dance character, mostly mute only joining some chorus parts. If the production has that short Macavity song in the first act she would join that.

She sometimes dances with the female groups and sometimes with the male groups. She would definitely join the Munkus-centre section at the ball and maybe the Tugger section too and would pick somebody up during the Bomba section (cause I say so). During the cuddle section (not read as orgy) she would try to cuddle with Tugger if he’s alone or maybe with Cassandra (or both).

She also wouldn’t hesitate to fight Macavity. Her first instinct would be to protect the ones who were hurt by Macavity, like Demeter, Alonzo or Mungojerrie. During Bustopher Jones I have a feeling she would stay with the boys rather than with the girls. Her fur is quite chaotic so Alonzo and Misto would propably try to straighten it so she looks nice for Bustopher but it’s already too late for that. Because she is quite white, she would play a (king) poodle during the Pekes and Pollicles. During Skimble she would mostly sit in the background and sing and then join the train with one of the big wheels.

She is a protector but a little bit more chaotic than Munkustrap, Skimbleshanks, Jennyanydots or Alonzo. She doesn’t mind the boys and girls misbehaving and even joins them sometimes or protects them if one of the adults scolds them. She also finds Tugger very entertaining and joins his number very early on the boys’ side. She would definitely imitate his shoulder shimmy with great joy somewhere in the background during the number. She is also part of the Macavity number as background dancer and she would try to attack him first but would be stunned by his magic. She only wakes up when Alonzo fights him and catches him before he falls to the ground.

During Gus, Misto and Grizabella she would be mostly a mere background character. Thou she falls in the category copy-cat she propably would immitate some of Misto’s moves in the background (especially the shoulder shimmy cause she likes that a lot).

Persephone

Demeter x Alonzo-kitten (look at the name, I’m very creative)

Three words: shy, lively, bright

Colours: White, black, golden

How does she look like: quite small, short hair, mostly white and black with some gold. In her Jellicle form she is small, has long gloves like her mum and of course a studded collar.

Next to Alonzo and Demeter she is coparented by Munkustrap and Cassandra.

Character: She is very playful, has a lot of compassion like her mum and sister, loves flowers (duh) and loves cuddling a lot, even if it’s too hot for the other cats or her humans.

Lucy

One of the seven kittens out of Misto’s hat (can’t decide on her other parent yet, maybe she really just came out of a hat).

Three words: mischievous, playful, clever

Colours: black, brown

How does she look like: small, short hair, mostly black with some brown in it, she has four ears. In her Jellicle form she is small, black arm and leg warmers, some brown on the belly and in the wig. Wig is special, because she has four ears.

Character: She is very mischievous, likes to play pranks and misbehave, but never in an evil way. She hates cleaning but her daddy is very neat, so she has to endure it all the time. She too has some magic.

Sorry this took so long, just school. I think answering all of these will take a long time lets just be honest. But I'll try to work with these whenever I can. ALSO, there might be spelling and grammar mistakes because english is not my first language.

My thoughts and feelings for the twins were like nonexistent when I first got into cats, but after seeing the international tour in november they just shot right up into my top ten. Espessially Tantomile as she was the green eyes that went by me when the show started and was like 4 meters from me during the naming of cats and Mister Mistoffelees (and I swear we had a special moment during the naming of cats cuz we 100% made eye contact and right after that she reached her paw out, TO ME, but sadly there were two people in our way...)

Eh, so with that being said, here are my headcanons for everyones favorite mystical twins!

Headcanons:

Tantomile and Coricopat share the same spirit so if one of them becomes the Jellicle choice, they are both chosen.

Although the spirit is the same, the cats are not. Coricopat is much more um... dumb. It's not the right word but the only one I can think of. Like he's just.. he's there, having fun. While Tantomile is definitely the older and more mature of the two. Their reactions during the Mistoffelees number is the best explanation I can give. Just look at them.

When it comes to their powers they are both very strong with their psychic energy but again Tantomile is just keeping a little secret about her more cryptic side. The only other cat to know about her other side is of course her other half. They are like ying and yang kinda, but not really. Again, this thing with putting my thought into words. Either way, more on that later.

Random but Coricopat loves butterflies.

Backstory:

Now my usual backstory for these two is that they lived with a real witch and that they found the junkyard and the Jellicles thanks to their powers. Quite simple.

But, today I read through the Cats wiki just for fun and stumbled across the hc that Tantomile and Coricopat are Macavitys children. And I just died right then and there.

Is it in my main headcanons for Cats? No... But it sure as hell has it's own little world in my brain now. Just, stop and think about it for a minute and perhaps join me on the floor while I scream about the potential angst.

Family:

This goes without saying but, they're twins.

While they don't really have a real parents, unless you wanna go the Macavity route, Munkustrap has an extreme soft spot for them. So Munkustrap is their unofficial dad even though they are just a few years younger then him.

Pairings:

Personality:

Coricopat is a dork, an adorable dork, and I love him. He gets easily distracted, especially when Mungojerrie is within his psychic range.

Tantomile has a calm presence, even when some cats gets weirded out by the twins. Something she hides extremely well however is her cryptic side. Let's just say it's very much the opposite of the Tantomile we all know and love.

Plotbunnies:

So Macavity is obsessed with magical cats right.. so he kidnaps Coricopat, ya know as you do. The thing is, Tantomile is of course not okay with that.. so um, she ya know. Goes all cryptic and ballistic on Macavitys ass and saves her brother.

Yea, that one has been stuck in my brain for the longest of time and I love it so much.

Food:

Oh uh yeah, they don't eat. Might be a weird hc but it's mine.

Human home:

They primarily live in the junkyard but they do have their little witch hut together with their old little witch lady. It's quite small but it's perfect for the three of them. There is a bunch of pillows and blankest all over the place just for the twins. And there is a lot of purple.
