rereading PBD every week as I'm giffing and keep rewatching the episode really maximize my full brainrot with MSI. one of my favorite excerpts from the adapted chapters this week is probably joe's inner thoughts when he made the devil's deal with ming.

“How long do you want me to be with you?” “I don’t know,” [Ming] responded straightforwardly. “I need a deadline,” [Joe] smiled sarcastically. “A condo and cash, how long do you think I’m willing to have sex with you?” [Ming] responded coldly, “One year is fine.” “A year it is.” [Joe] carefully stuffed the check into his pocket, then turned and leave. After he walked downstairs, he stared up at this more than 30 stories high apartment building, so depressing, it’s indescribable. He had only been in there for half an hour and it solved the crisis that would have taken him half a lifetime of hard work…but he sold himself. However, this business transaction is considered a good deal. [Joe] thought of [Ing]’s yellow tinted expression, her life that seems to be withering away at any time is his biggest concern at the moment. He patted the check in his pocket and laughed at himself. Just a matter of having sex with someone…it’s really not that big a deal. This deal is worth it… very much worth it.

i know many are lamenting about how joe doesn't want to be saved but i think this is his way of saving himself. with full awareness that he's just a comfort relief for ming, he's walking out of this deal with a condo and money to help his mom. moreover, i've always felt like subconciously this was joe's way of facing his subdued feelings, to completely get over ming, instead of running away to death like he did last time.

full disclaimer: my knowledge of 188 novels is still limited so i might not cover all of the special chapters, these are just the ones i've been able to read/know due to the handful of vietnamese/english translations i've been accessible to.

so there are generally a lot of official extras: the written word extra chapters, additional material like interview with the characters, official chibi/cartoon au... which is why for this post i'll just focus on summarizing the post-canon extra chapters. i'll also be linking a few translations i found.

Daily life a couple: Ming is sulky at Joe for always being so busy with work because he's busy himself but he can always spend time with Joe while Joe has a lot of projects to film. Joe coaxes Ming by agreeing to go on a short trip with him to the beach. They have kinky sex on the beach.

Period of Happiness: Joe surprises Ming by returning home early from his work trip. Joe hears the sounds coming from the bedroom while Ming quickly turns off what he was watching. Joe got curious so he secretly looks at what Ming had been watching, turns out Ming was watching old films which Joe 1.0 starred in. Joe feels conflicted, a bit envy of his old face, is kinda forlorn and down mood. Next morning, Ming notices something's wrong with Joe and apologizes profusely to Joe for watching films of Joe 1.0 while Joe is like it's fine (he was in fact, not fine). In the evening, Joe tells Ming he's gonna take a walk outside but Ming got all paranoid that Joe is still mad at him and starts crying and begging him to stay, promising he'll never watch films of Joe 1.0 again if Joe stays (all this kid knows is how to beg and cry lawd). Joe is like no he's just worried that Ming cannot fully accept his new look compared to his old one. Ming was like no he should be the one worrying here, worrying that one day Joe can get upset and leave him without saying goodbye like Joe once did. Ming does regret that he's never had a picture taken with Joe 1.0 but promises that he only loves the current Joe in front of him. They had hot emotional sex after resolving their conflict.

Injured Xiang-Ge: Joe gets injured on set and broke his rib a little bit. Ming immediately flies home to see Joe and take care of him. Ming expresses his fears and worries about what if one day Joe hits his head and lose all conciousness of Joe 1.0 or if Joe 2.0's soul return to this body. Joe reassures Ming that he will be more careful later on when filming.

New Year Vacation: A snowstorm hit the set where Joe is filming, causing a delay in production. Joe messages Ming to coax him about not being able to come back home in time to celebrate Lunar New Year with him. Ming surprises Joe at the hotel where he was staying to celebrate new year with him.

Jealous Little Gong: Ming is jealous over the news reporting about Joe's new film and dating rumors with his actress co-star. Joe is being sickenly sweet trying to coax Ming.

Summer Limited (adapted audiodrama here): famous actor Joe is invited to Italy for Milan Fashion Week, Ming is somewhere in Europe working around the same time so he received an invitation to the FW by the organizers to walk with Joe. Ming surprises Joe with his appearance and they're all lovey dovey with their public appearance at Joe's hesitance because it's implied that Ming's father still disapproves of his gay son.

Vacation in Munich in 2018 (english tl here): Joe takes some time off acting when he's at the height of his career to travelled with Ming to Germany where Ming is supposed to be working there for some time. They take a walk around the city one day and run into a female acquaintance of Ming. Basically Ming teases Joe about whether he's jealous, they're just being lovey and dovey bantering.

I have typed her and placed her in the queue but am still working my way through posting paid typings, hence the delay.

I see her as an ESFJ 3w2. I know they're arguing STJ for her over on PBD but she seems far too good with people and their emotions and cares way too much about social appropriateness and inclusion to be anything but a strong Fe user. And she really, really cares about appearances -- that's always the first place her mind goes (how does this look / reflect on the school). I liked her a lot. And damn, if Gwendoline Christie didn't look dazzling!

Narratives and Rhetoric

In this entry, I will examine the critical question(s): How does this artifact use narrative elements like scene, character, set up of events, time, etc. to promote a certain ideology or constitute people in a narrative? What is ethically productive and/or limiting about this depiction, and is it more productive or limiting?

To investigate these questions, I examined an excerpt from an episode of The PBD Podcast as my rhetorical artifact. The clip shares a narrative to an intended male audience that society as a whole has deteriorated due to lack of honor, pride, self-control, and self-accountability. The narrative is constructed with the rhetorical use of comparison, causation, and drawing on extremes, which can be productive in understanding cause-and-effect relationships in society but is limiting in that it ignores the gray areas outside the extremes.

The PBD Podcast is conducted by Patrick Bet-David, a multimillionaire and real estate investor. The podcast often has guests and discusses highly-contested societal issues from politics to corruption. The episode from which I pulled this clip is titled “Andrew Tate PBD EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Jail Life, BBC Reaction, Matrix, Religion, Future Plans”. The guest, Andrew Tate, is a former kickboxing world champion, multimillionaire businessman, and social media influencer who about ten years ago began posting advice to young men on social media. Tate’s message is that men want respect more than anything. In order to get respect, they must work to become worthy of it: get up early, work extremely hard, stay sober, maintain physical health, be physically fit, find God, and do not complain. In the past five years, Tate had been speaking outwardly against an intricate network of global corruption, something he refers to as “The Matrix”. At the end of December 2022, Andrew and his brother Tristan were arrested and held without charge for three months in Romanian prison. Upon their release, the Tate’s were officially charged with human trafficking, accused of using emotional coercion to convince their female friends to make Tik Tok accounts, gain popularity, and subsequently seize the money made from Tik Tok views. The complexity of this case and exactly what role “The Matrix” may have played in Tate’s arrest is what drove Patrick Bet-David to reach out to Tate to conduct this interview. In the excerpt I have analyzed, PBD asks Tate what he would do if he were President of the United States. Tate proceeds to extrapolate the question and begins to talk about the deterioration of society, using complex case studies like school shootings as a premise for his argument.

Palczewski, Ice, and Fritch (2012) explain that narratives can work by implying causation and engaging interest to create a certain view on culture and community. Narratives rely on the chronological telling of events and connect them in some way although their connection may not be immediately apparent. Hence, they possess an element of causation, or at least contingency. Narratives also engage interest. Even the most painful narratives can engage interest because it allows the audience to learn more about the human condition. Some narratives do this by adding vivacity. Vivacity is the sense of immediacy or presence created through the use of descriptions, imagery, and colorful language that make an idea come to life. Furthermore, two ways Palczewski, Ice, and Fritch say we can judge narratives are through their character development and the authorial intent. Character development is the process of describing the actions of and relationships among actors within a narrative. Authorial intent asks if the author is attempting to tell a story based off of events which have actually occurred. When the rhetor makes a factual claim, can it be assessed for its truthfulness with empirical evidence?

One of the ways the narrative is built is through the use of causation and contrast of characters. Tate builds two extreme opposites when describing the kind of man who commits school shootings to argue that it’s how men respond to difficult circumstances that matters, not the circumstances themselves. He says, “When a man is sad, there is an inclination towards aggression; that’s how we’re born, that’s how we’ve evolved. We’re evolved with that inclination towards aggression, and we need that to protect and provide, that’s who we are. We need that bravery…A school shooter is not a man with masculine accountability; he’s a man who is told to act how you feel, all the time. Then he gets picked on long enough; throw some drugs on top of it that his psychiatrist gave him; throw in the lack of a girlfriend, and he’s had enough. That’s where school shootings come from.” By creating two separate characters, the narrative suggests a certain ethical standard to strive for: it is not what happens to you that matters, but how you respond. The narrative suggests that masculine accountability and using sadness as a means to protect and provide, not harm others. He engages interest from the audience, who are assumed to be disenfranchised young men, by adding vivacity to the narrative. While not all school shooters may have been picked on, are prescribed medication, are lonely, sad and depressed, it allows at least some of these men to identify with the characters in the narrative.

The narrative can also be understood as having true authorial intent as its fact-based claims can be assessed from an empirical standpoint. “In the 1950s, I’m sure there was a prevalence of guns all around America but there just wasn’t the school shooting. Why? What was different in the years before than there is now. I think it’s because children obeyed their parents, and their parents were a family, and there was a degree of responsibility that was instilled inside of people… and there was a degree of honor and pride.” According to a General Social Survey conducted by the University of Chicago, 28.1% of individuals in 1980 owned guns as opposed to 22.4% in 2014 (Smith & Son, 2015). Additionally, according to a report from Statista.com, the number of K-12 school shootings in the United States has risen from 20 incidents in 1980 to 240 incidents in 2021 (2023). While the data is limiting, as it fails to account for the period Tate refers to, the veracity of his message still stands as this trend is confirmed. We see, through empirical research, that while gun ownership has remained relatively constant, the number of school shootings has increased substantially. This effectively establishes authorial intent.

This narrative might be unproductive for society in certain ways, but overall, is ultimately productive. It might be unproductive as it fails to account for female school shooters and explain how that happens. The narrative is also limiting because of its binary nature in presenting two extreme characters. By merely acknowledging two types of men, those with masculine accountability and those without, and the latter perpetrate these horrible crimes, is severely understanding the issue. It is an oversimplification as it ignores the gray area of the matter, and keeps things in black and white. However, it does give useful tips for how to lead one’s life. Acting with pride and honor makes it much less likely that someone will act in the detriment of others. Caring for others and being selfless rather than selfish in the approach to one’s emotions leads to healthy relationships and a healthy society.

Steno Study Update Post #2

Decided that I'm going to keep a running list of all changes I make to my user.json -- my personal steno dictionary -- in these update posts, as well as the briefs I’m keeping track of when studying.

Today I tried to complete the exercises (2805, 2806, and 2808) at 170-180 bpm to try to push myself further. It was very difficult but when I could get the timing right, it really felt like it was possible for me to get faster. Awesome motivation, honestly.

Also: My top speed has increased from 130 WPM to 140 WPM. That means I went from 120 WPM -> 130 WPM in December, to 140 WPM in January. I’m so happy!

This is one of my attempts at writing Exercise 2805 at 170 BPM on Stenojig:

What do you get when you cross an Oriental Shorthair with a Donskoy cat? Peterbald the cat! These exotic animals are easy to care for with fun-loving, passionate personalities and looks that can only be described as uniquely adorable.

The Peterblood cat has a sense of loyalty that many other cats do not have: in fact, this cat is often compared to a dog because it is so affectionate towards its humans.

These cats are incredibly sociable, and will happily greet newcomers rather than hide suspiciously when friends come to call.

Due to their social nature, they are unhappy when left alone, meaning providing constant companionship is very important. The good news is that friendships don’t have to be human: Peterbald cats are very similar to their Oriental cousins ​​in that they can form close relationships with other cats and dogs.

Peterbald cats are playful and athletic. They spend their waking hours inspecting everything, helping their favorite humans with errands, and finding high vantage points from which to survey their domain.

They have a tendency to talk while they’re at it, voicing their opinions out loud on everything you’re giving them so much attention that they need more food in their dish.

The Peterblud is a cat breed that originated in St. Petersburg, Russia. These unusual cats are carriers of a hair loss mutation that results in them having either bald, flocked, velour, brushed (unique to this breed), or straight coats that can come in a variety of colors and patterns.

History

The Peterbald breed was born in late 1994 in St. Petersburg, Russia, the result of an experimental mating of the Don Hairless Affinogen Myth and the Oriental Shorthair Female World Champion. Russian felinologist Olga S. Named Radma von Jägerhoff by Mironova.

The first two litters produced four Peterbald kittens: Mandarin iz Murino, Muscat iz Murino, Nezenka is Murino, and Nocturn iz Murino. These four Peterbalds were the founders of the race.

In 1996, the breed was adopted into the Russian Selection Feline Federation (SFF) and given the standard and abbreviated name (PBD).

The recent cabinet line up of the unity government is definitely not what Malaysians want.

However, for the sake of the country's political stability, governed under the Premiership of Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the unity government is the only choice under the current political situation in Malaysia which has been steeped in race n religious political sentiments brought on by irresponsible politicians.

PBDS applauds the new cabinet portfolio under Ministery of Unity which had been neglected since the early 1980's.

This unity government is therefore the best formulae to unite all races in Malaysia, by giving and taking, sacrifice and respect of the monarchy and democracy in nation building. It is also a way to fight religious extremism and racist ideology of the ultras 'one race supremacy' that had been a growing concern and that has been rearing its ugly head in Malaysia for the past 3 decades.

Now that the dust have settled on the formation of the Unity government, we in PBDS hoped the Government can get down to business fast to put the country's economy back on track.

Cabinet ministers need no reminder that with position and power, it brings with it great responsibility, and in the context of the present Government, are part of an institution with the highest level of integrity.

PBDS wished to thank PM Anwar with regards to his appointment of Deputy Prime Minister ll, Datuk Fadillah Yusof, the appointment first of its kind in Malaysian history. The TPM II happened to be from the Borneo States.

On another note, as a Dayak based party, PBDS would like to congratulate notably the two Dayak Ministers. The burden now falls upon you both to be the voice of the Dayaks in the Federal Government. Today, you are in the highest position of power and influence. Make the best of it to assist in the development of your community and country. One day too, you will come down to be like the rest of your brethren and you look on with pride what you have done for the Dayaks. If you do nothing to help your community n Malaysians in general to the best of your ability with integrity, the remorse and regret will be yours to bear.

We hope too, as pronounced so many times by the Prime Minister, the Government will go all out to fight corruption. The Government cannot be wrong in going all out after the corrupt. We hereby invite those who abhors corruption to come to Sarawak and make your fight against corruption be felt. When we say 'be felt', it means the law is and should not be selective. We all know the fish get rotten from the head first, as the saying goes.

We in PBDS are watching. The Dayak too are watching for the Gov't to deliver on what it had promised with a policy of fairness to all, zero toleration for corruption, no room for racism and religious extremism. PBDS wants the government to come down hard on those who preach racism and religion as a political tool to gain popularity.

For Dayaks, as the poorest community in Malaysia, PBDS humbly request that:

1. To have a Dayak NationalDepartment with specific objectives and a yearly budget.

2. Quota for Dayaks In Federal Civil Service, GLCs, Agencies and Statutory Bodies

3. Quota For Dayaks to enter public universities, colleges and universities, training institutions

4. Scholarships quota for Dayaks from Federal Government, MARA, Petronas, TNB and Shell.

5. Dayaks must be given allocation of funds for the dayak community like what the Orang Asli are receiving.

6. With Dato Seri Alex Linggi as Works minister, bigger allocations for rural infrastructure should be given due consideration which had been long overdue.

7. PBDS hereby urge the inity government of DS Anwar to recognise Dayak as an entity of Indigenous ethnics. In this regards, PBDS hope that Dayaks will no longer be regarded as lain lain.

PBDS hereby urged the Gov't to quickly ratify UNDRIP - United Nation Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People.

PBDS also hope to see racial harmony, religious tolerance, fairness in wealth distribution and fair opportunities for the people of Malaysia to engage in socio-economic activities and fair representation in civil services based on real meritocracy.

The MD-12 was all metal, with a seating capacity for 22 passengers, having a low cantilever wing and four engines. Leszek Dulęba and Franciszek Misztal were responsible for building the first example of the MD-12 for static tests in March 1959. Soon afterwards, the second prototype, SP-PAL, was built for in flight tests. August 1961 saw the next prototype, SP-PBD (MD-12P) being introduced into test service with PLL LOT Airlines and served for the regular Warsaw- Rzeszów-Warsaw route. The adaptation of the aircraft for photogrammetry was entrusted to a team led by Marcin Fortuński with the co-operation of Leszek Dulęba. For these purposes, both the wing span and wing area were increased. The capacity of the fuel tanks in the wings was enlarged, which increased the duration of flight by 10 hours. The nose of the aeroplane was redesigned and fitted with glass. In the floor, two openings were made for special cameras. In October of the same year, the factory crew flew the aeroplane for propaganda and advertising purposes on the Warsaw-Budapest-Warsaw route. During the International Photogrammetric Conference, the aeroplane received good reports. Despite all the preparations, the MD-12 never came into production, a strong case against it being the crash of 1963, of the prototype SP-PAL during a test flight. The MD-12F came into the museum's collection in 1967, being one of the few exhibits to be delivered in flight directly to Krakow's museum.”
