Good to Know: Self-Defense

Hello everyone. Hope all of you had a great weekend and are ready to start a fresh and brand new week. This one is going to be a serious topic. I felt it was important to talk about self-defense this week. I had an incident where a man who was 2ft from me was verbally being aggressive and seemed he would strike me at any second. I was scared and felt my heart was going to burst out of my chest and all I was thinking about was if the pen I had in my hands would be enough to save me. I hope there are pointers and tips that can help, and possibly save, anyone in the future.

As a 5ft 19 year old young women, I'm not known to be strong. I spend the majority of my time traveling alone to work, school and home on public transportation at various times so I've seen situations where a male is being aggressive sexually towards women and even me. According to RAINN, an American is sexually assaulted every 98 seconds. And the majority of sexual assault victims are between the ages of 18-34. The odds seem like they are against us. Many seem to blame the victim due to what they're wearing, how intoxicated they are, or being alone without friends was a dumb choice. All of this is wrong to do. We blame the victim which is absolutely wrong! We should teach men, the majority of sexual perpetrators are males, about consent. A 7 letter word that is simple, No means NO. Unfortunately in the meanwhile, we have to learn how to defend ourselves.

If you're ever stuck in a situation where you're alone and have to get out.

Here are some tips to help you:

Don't try to beat a wrist hold by pulling away from your attacker. Instead, rotate your wrist so your thumbs meet his fingers and jerk sharply by bending your arm at the elbow.

Target your opponent's nose with an upward palm strike. Breaking a nose this way is much more painful than from the front or the side

Using elbow strikes

Closer affective striking range then punching

The point of her elbow may open up cuts on your opponent's face/head potentially blinding them with their own blood

A hard enough elbow straight to an opponent temple can cause immediate unconsciousness or even death

Aim for the parts of the body where you can do the most damage easily; the eyes, nose, ears, neck, groin, knee, and legs.

Items you can use as a weapon

A comb: Press the teeth above your attackers upper lip as hard as you can

Key or Pen: Hold a key or pen between your middle and ring fingers while you're walking home in the dark for more assurance

Hairspray or perfume: Spray into and assailant's eyes
