Samaris - Ég vildi fegin verða (I Would Gladly Become) - transcript/translation
Another anon request! This song's lyrics are actually taken from a poem. Transcript/translation below.
Icelandic transcript
Transcription notes
These lyrics are taken from a poem by nineteenth-century poet Páll Ólafsson. The original poem is from a masculine point of view, and contains the masculine adjectives feginn and dauðtrúr. The official title of the song, on the other hand, has fegin, the feminine form, so I'm assuming she transposed the whole thing to the feminine and thus it's also the feminine "dauðtrú". (The song is slurred enough it's hard to actually audibly make out whether it's dauðtrúr or dauðtrú, but it would make no sense to use fegin but dauðtrúr, unless it was expressly going for some kind of genderfuckery.)
The original poem says "o'ní gröf ég með þér færi seinast", but in the song she's clearly singing "með þér ég". The distinction is purely aesthetic and does not convey any difference in meaning; Icelandic word order can be pretty flexible, especially in poetry.
English translation
I'd gladly become a bright day while sometimes being a dark and silent night while sometimes being dark
I'd wrap around you, be in your embrace until I woke you with my rays of light
I'd gladly become a bright day while sometimes being a dark and silent night I'd be a beacon lighting your way, I'd wrap my arms around you as you soundly slept
I'd be so very faithful to you until the end and at last go down in the grave with you I'd gladly become a bright day while sometimes being a dark and silent night sometimes being dark
Translation notes
The word "dauðtrú" is not exactly a common word (I've found only two examples of it looking around online, these lyrics and other recitations of this poem, and one other example from the early twentieth century referring to farm workers), but it's a compound that means "deathly faithful", i.e. faithful until death.
There's a version of these lyrics on lyricstranslate right now which you may have seen; unfortunately it appears to be translated by someone with a pretty wobbly grasp of the language who's doing a lot of guessing to fill in the blanks. The poem speaks of becoming, not seeing, a bright day, and likewise of being the dark and silent night, not being gloomy and silent at night - and they're definitely not offering anyone a wonderful death.
There are a couple of lines in the poem that are not included in the song, which go between the bit about following "you" into the grave and the ones about wrapping around them:
Og þá menn læstu líkkistunni aftur, ég læddist eins og skuggi í faðminn þinn, (því mannlegur ei meinað getur kraftur að myrkrið komi í grafarhúmið inn),
For fun, this bit translates to:
And when the coffin would be locked shut, I would sneak like a shadow into your embrace, (because no human power can stop the dark from slipping into the shade of the tomb),

I just spent upwards of 30 minutes today trying to find this older comic I read awhile back, which was fantastic but I couldn’t remember the specifics (like character or location names) well enough, and I THOUGHT it was called ‘Lunaris’ or ‘Solaris,’ except that wasn’t getting me anywhere either, so all I knew for sure was that it was:
Pre-1990s
French (possibly)
Sci-fi, but philosophical sci-fi, bordering on fantasy, not ships and lasers
About a man who traveled to a city(?) to investigate it (helpful, I know)
Finally, I just found the website where I read it and started scrolling through the S section, I was *pretty sure * it started with S instead of L…
It was NOT Lunaris or Solaris. It was “Samaris.”
