Plant of the Day
Wednesday 24 January 2024
A popular insectivorous perennial hybrid, Sarracenia x stevensii (pitcher plant) has tall, slender, reddish-pink pitchers. These plants need a bright light in a frost free position with a moist but well–drained, acidic growing medium.

the little beasts are looking good in the sun today! they always look like they’re laughing at a joke.
some of the new growth on this guy is twisted and cracked - the two weeks in a dark box while in transit made them look pretty sad. but the new pitchers are coming up beautifully!

Crab Spider in a Pitcher Plant
Anyone who knows how pitcher plants work might be surprised to see one take up temporary residence so close close to the point of no return, but really the spider is in no real or imaginary danger at all. It takes its ropes and rigging along everywhere it goes. It makes its living eating flower visitors, including bees and wasps, and right now, this plant is attracting huge numbers of Yellowjackets, Blackjackets and Flys. The food is delivering its self right to the spiders dinner table.
It's almost symbiotic since the plant gets the leftovers 😋
