Metalocalypse #36: “Snakes n’ Barrels II” | August 25, 2008 - 12:00AM | S02E16

Well! This certainly is a momentous episode! I guess. Well, it’s the first thirty minute episode, which isn’t nothing. The next season would be presented in the half hour format, I’m guessing in part due to the direct success of this episode. This is sorta the “Fonzie's Getting Married” of Metalocalypse.

This one is basically about the perils of sobriety. Pickles old band Snakes n’ Barrels gets back together without him. The effects of the dangerous drug they were dosed with in the first Snakes n’ Barrels episode turned all but Pickles into a blank slate, prime for reprogramming. Ricky Kixx, an obnoxious sober rock star (voiced by Mike Patton), happens to be the first guy to waltz into the band’s orbit. He does indeed reprogram them as a “bragging about sobriety” band. Pickles intends to settle the score with them, but they have a restraining order against him. Pickles will have to violate a legal boundary!

Meanwhile: Ricky Kixx turns out to be a rageaholic who murders one of his assistants after revealing to him that he hates being sober, and considers it to be a terrible prison. He preaches sobriety just to make those around him as miserable as he is. Murderface feels angst from not having his side project PLANET PISS properly registered, and goes apeshit when he finds out Toki registered every planet piss web domain there is as a mean prank. Murderface goes to confront Toki at the Snakes n’ Barrels concert but Toki has gone absolutely mental beating an especially obnoxious straight-edge fan half-to-death. This is during the show’s climax when lingering effects of the drug in the bands' systems cause mass chaos.

It is time for me to list stuff now. Here are some other things in the episode: Dr. Rockso is in this, no longer a clown and two months sober (give or take). He is eventually tempted by his old clownsona in a series of hallucinations. There is a funny scene where Nathan explosion slaps the vendors at the sober rock show, he just slaps them silly. Uh, that’s only two things, which isn’t really a list. Okay, a third thing: they cut the theme song short for fun. That’s fun!

I like this episode fine, but I don’t think I loved it. It ends fairly strong, it feels slightly experimental in that we get some longer scenes, like when Dethklok bash their manager’s lamp collection, and a fun aside where Pickles gives his tour of LA. Both of these things would have probably been cut from an 11 minute version of the episode. They’re fun, but I wouldn’t consider these among my favorite scenes in Metalocalypse history. I will forever be curious what an edited-down version of this episode would be like. It will haunt me for the rest of my days.

these "tasty tuesdays" have really been running me for a loop

Oh, I don't know... tuesday is tasty to me, but maybe for you? (??)

i log it and there's nothing, every tuesday, for whatever reason. out partying with your friends? hmm? can you at least have a microblog every tuesday about the tastiest thing you had in the past week. people would actually like it. that's the thing.

Okay: for real: My initial post on this blog I basically said "I'm gonna update mostly every day but please don't mind it when I skip a day" and I'm basically exercising that clause right there. But yeah, I have a thing I do on Tuesday nights and I seemingly, no matter what, wind up working later than usual on Tuesday so I almost never have time. I also tend to burn out on the blog when I consciously build up a backlog. Maybe you noticed or maybe you didn't, but MONDAY evenings have sorta become a crapshoot for me lately, too.

Very fun fact: I was going to attempt a Tuesday post last night, and figured I could knock out this episode/write-up very easily, and then put it on and saw it was a double episode instead of the previously-assumed 11 minutes. So I bailed! What could have been!

Also, the elite group of very real hackers who humiliate me by titling my Tuesday posts as some variation of "Tasty Tuesday" have gotten in touch with me and told me that they need more time to come up with new titles. I hate that they are disgracing my blog with their vandalism, but I respect the creative process enough that I feel I must oblige.

Also the tastiest thing I eat each week is always PUSSY

I had most of my impside toons parked on Mek-Sha for Wookiee hugs, because I prefer the straight-shot line-up of the Wookiees so that I can easily count all 12 of them and make sure I didn’t miss any, and there’s a vendor there too, so I can grab some of the event decos as I gather parcels if I like (since I had 70 parcels left over from last year that it took a hot minute to figure out how to convert to legacy currency—pro tip: you have to move them all to one toon’s personal inventory, then mail them to a different toon, then when you pick it up from the mail, the stack will go into legacy event currency). I hate Mek-Sha’s drain on my graphics card, and the fact that if I want to instance-hop to double my hugs, the other choice for an instance is usually pvp, but w/e, usually worth it.

However, tonight, there was a Guardian camping on the pvp instance and stunning or pushing imp players right before the cast finished for their hug and then running away. After they attacked Mena three times in a row without getting a response from me, like seven other imp players just fucking descended on them and beat their ass, because impside solidarity sometimes, and because every so often other players surprise me by looking out for each other. Yes, I know, we were on the pvp instance, and the point of the pvp instance is that you’re able to attack other players. But maybe do it literally anywhere else on the planet? Everyone else from both factions was still politely waiting their turn for hugs and throwing snowballs at each other, and there’s this asshole keeping people from finishing their hugs and pushing them off the boardwalk. And then running to safety behind npcs that it takes a group to kill. So not even actually engaging in actual pvp, just being an asshole for the sake of being an asshole.

I did end up moving everyone over to Narsh, since there is one more Wookiee there than on Mek-Sha anyway, there’s free solo travel there if I decide I want to leave, and there are more of the droids so more of a chance to get the holo trees (and there’s usually more instances to choose from, and even if one of them is pvp, I’m pretty sure the Promenade is “safe” from random aggro, and you can’t just freely attack even if it is a pvp instance). I do know where all of the Wookiees are on Narsh, but it’s more annoying if I think I’ve missed one to have to backtrack.

But I got caught up on the Wookiee Hugging Champion title from last year (I slacked off and barely hugged any Wookiees last year). I’m probably in a pretty good place to be able to get this year’s title without having to stress too much about it. So I should also be able to get in some Rakghoul Tunnel time too. I’ve already maxed out my THORN rep for the week just by sending three toons through a couple times, but I can keep picking up rep items to cash in once conquest resets (and I do kind of like Rakghoul stuff; and maybe I’ll just send Zhorrid down there to repeat the quests now that she’s effectively permanently immune to the Rakghoul plague because I got her a broken level 1 infection last Rakghoul Week, that way I don’t have to spend money on vaccines). (Though Rakghoul Week with Moxie is really fun.)

Fun story about someone who was probably trying to build up their infection so they could go to Fleet or Narsh and spread it: I joined a group for Eyeless on the first night, and we only had one healer (not a terribly big deal, I solo healed Eyeless without knowing I was going to be solo healing it), and one of the dps was infected. Literally every other member of the raid offered them a vaccine, and they turned down the trades, saying “no, I’m fine, just pull.” Raid lead said “dude, we’ve only got one healer, don’t be stupid.” Dude still refused. Healer said, “please kick him.” Dude said “it’s not a big deal, if I die, I die.” Leader initiated a vote to kick him on the basis of being a moron, but he left before we could vote. So we just 7-manned it, which we probably would have ended up basically doing anyway when Eyeless probably immediately killed the dude’s compromised ass at the beginning of the fight, and it went great.

Moral of the story: don’t be a jerk just for the sake of being a jerk. It’s not a good look.

(Split Ends) RP Log: Rising and Riylli help Baldur while Cravs is MIA

Days prior ----- Cravs is gone, but has left two letters for Rising, Riylli, and Lin to read over.

Mindred's letter To the party of Singing Gull: Thank you for reaching out - I will consider extending a loan to your cause. Please meet me at the office of Red Spice Emporium on Windsday at 5:30 pm sharp. Baldur will be waiting by the entrance of the Hawker’s Alley to escort you all to the designated meeting area. I look forward to speaking with you all. ~Mindred R.

Crav's letter Shit happened. Busy. I’ll meet up with you guys on the day we have to see Mindred.

Day of -----

Cravendy Hound - The two of you arrive right on time, but Cravs is nowhere to be seen. Baldur (B) is there to greet you at the entrance of the Hawker’s Alley. The boy gives each of you a casual nod, and then looks around. “Where's your third?”

(Riylli Aliapoh) Riylli tilts her head as she approaches the boy. "...Is Cr... Singing Gull not here yet..?" She asks, looking around nervously. "She left us a super vague note. Hope she's alright..."

(Rising Lotus) grunted, looking just as anxious about the matter as Riylli if not more so. "She'd said she'd meet us here, so she'll probably be here soon." She gave a nod, trying to hide the slightest bit of doubt in her voice.

(Cravendy Hound) Baldur shakes his head no. “Been keeping an eye on the crowd while I waited. Thought you’d arrive all together.” He looks around himself, similarly anxious, then sighs. “We’ve got a few minutes to spare, but we shouldn’t keep Miss Rot waiting long. You said she left you a note?”

(Riylli Aliapoh) Riylli put her hands on her hips and gave a huff. "Barely. Just said she was busy and she'd meet us here. Should... we go see Rot without her..?" She asked, looking up at Rising

(Rising Lotus) "Yeah, didn't say nothin' jus' that she was leavin'." she sighed, running her hand over her head and down her neck. "S-She's not going to jus' leave I'm-" she was interrupted by Riylli, remembering they were here to meet said lady. "Oh...I don't know, maybe? But she wanted to meet Gull, so maybe we should wait?"

(Cravendy Hound) Baldur crosses his arms. “She makes a bad first impression, skipping out on the meeting like this. But since you two are here...maybe we can just have this be a meet and greet?”

(Riylli Aliapoh) Riylli lets out a heavy sigh. "I... Guess..? Maybe it'll help with the mission?" She looked up to Rising again, before remembering their cover story and turned back to Baldur. "Er... Mission to advance her singin' career."

(Rising Lotus) Rising dragged her hand down her face, trying her best to collect herself. "Aye..." she shook her head quickly. "We ought to do somethin' before she decides not to meet with us. We'll jus' have to say that.." she took a few moments to remember the alibi. "..Gull, had some urgent.. singin' matters to attend to."

(Riylli Aliapoh) Riylli grinned. "We can say she had a bit to drink earlier but she's a total lightweight and couldn't make it. Probably not that far off from the truth even!"

(Cravendy Hound) “I’m sure Miss Rot would understand. She’s a business woman too, after all,” Baldur chimes in. He then begins to walk down the Alley, past vendors hawking exotic wares and savory snacks. Eventually, he leads you to a building emblazoned with crimson banners. The Red Spice Emporium awaits.

(Rising Lotus) Merely nodded and hurried to catch up with Baldur. "..Maybe we ought to not say she was drinkin' though..probably gonna leave a bad impression...even if it's true."

(Riylli Aliapoh) The Miqo'te shrugged and followed along, gazing curiously at the various stalls they passed on their way to the ominous building

(Cravendy Hound) Stepping into the building, the boy exchanges a few words with a Roegadyn clerk at the front desk, and then the trio is led into a small conference room. A petite midlander with greying auburn hair swivels in her chair to face you all with a tight smile. “Hello! This is Singing Gull’s party, correct?”

(Riylli Aliapoh) "Mostly! Gull couldnt... really make it unfortunately. But we were hopin' we could still talk to Rot and see if we can't work somethin' out anyroad!"

(Rising Lotus) Nodded along. "Aye, we're hopin' she'll be 'round soon at least, but we can get things started maybe?" she shrugged "We don't want to waste her time an' all, since she's lettin' us see her."

(Cravendy Hound) Mindred’s hair falls loose on her shoulders, and she’s wearing a neat red shirt that has her business logo embroidered at the pocket. At the news of Singing Gull being missing, she pauses, shock flashing in her eyes for a second. Then it’s gone, and her smile is even wider. “Ah...don’t worry. I know how it is with celebrities. Always sending their lackeys to do the actual work.”

(Riylli Aliapoh) Riylli plops herself down onto one of the conference room chairs. "Tell me about it... Barely even left us a note either!" She said with an overdramatic sigh. "She's lucky we like her so much. How does this all work anyroad? I aint really all that familiar with loans to be honest..."

(Rising Lotus) "Aye, she's a right fine singer, but you know..." she turned her attention to Riylli as she started speaking, rubbing her temples as she brought up her unfamiliarity with loans. "...Well I'm fairly familiar with how they work at any rate." she shot Riylli a glare.

(Riylli Aliapoh) The Miqo'te tilts her head, not really sure why she was getting glared at all of the sudden

(Cravendy Hound) The woman laces her fingers together, elbows braced against the fine mahogany table. “You tell me how much you want, and I lay out some options...There are a couple forms I’ll need you to fill out, but given as your Lady isn’t here, you may mail them back to me at your earliest convenience.” She slides out a thin stack of papers.

(Riylli Aliapoh) Riylli accepts the papers and begins to flip through them, before realizing she really didn't understand what she was looking at anyways and hands them off to Rising

(Cravendy Hound) “These papers will allow me to follow up on Gull’s loan history, which I’ll use to determine whether I want to approve the loan or not. If all works out, I’ll have the money ready for you to pick up,” Mindred states. She looks at Baldur for a second, her smile unflinching.

(Rising Lotus) Rising was quick to try and take the lead. "We're lookin' for 'round..." she paused to take the papers from Riylli, trying to think of a believable number. "uh...twenty-five thousand was it? Most to cover...costs an' get her face..well voice.. out there more. I'm sure we'll be makin' it back quick though.." she started flipping through the pages.

(Cravendy Hound) Mindred’s gaze rolls back onto Rising. “Mm, I see. I’ll take note of that. This certainly sounds like a promising deal...so I do hope everything else falls in order.” She slides out her business card to Rising, and seems to be waiting for one in turn.

(Riylli Aliapoh) Riylli stares at the business card for quite some time, clearly trying to figure out what it was but not wanting to actually ask.

(Rising Lotus) "We'll have her look over these soon as we see her next, get it all figured out. You're a busy lady after all seems like." picking up the card and reading it quickly, she then realized what Rot was waiting for. "Oh, sorry...we are lookin' to make some more, caught us right after a show out in uh, Thanalan. Lots got picked up there."

(Cravendy Hound) Mindred chuckles. “Ah. Here, you can borrow this.” She takes a notepad and pen out from a sliding drawer underneath the desk, and presents it to Riylli. “Just leave me with some kind of contact information, so I can follow up.”

(Cravendy Hound) “Business can move fast. I’d like to be able to reach out to your party just in case.”

(Riylli Aliapoh) "...Contact..?" She asked, looking up to Rising for a moment. She wasn't so sure about giving them the name of Heartwood, still not entirely sure whatever they were up to was on the right side of the law. "Can I give you my linkpearl? My clan's a bit hard to find, so it'd be much easier that way"

Rising Lotus started to sweat as she saw the paper and pen placed before Riylli, fingers curling closed as she hope she put something not stupid. Her eyes narrowed at the answer, offering up the linkpearl was a classy move, but the mention of clans...

(Cravendy Hound) “Clans? Is that what you call your....singing troupe?” She gives Riylli an odd look, but accepts the linkpearl regardless.

(Rising Lotus) Rising was fast to butt in yet again. "Oh that's jus' what she calls our little.." she twirled her hand around "Group, like us together, but not what our singin' group is called! It's jus's Singin' Gull is all."

(Rising Lotus) "Jus' a Miqo'te thing, how she was raised, we're her clan. That's what it is."

(Riylli Aliapoh) Happily hands over her linkpearl, Rising able to spy a number of them in her pouch alongside that faintly glowing mcguffin. She looked up at Rising as she spoke. "Uh... Yeah, just a bit of Keeper lingo I guess, don't worry about it. Just contact me on that, and I'll gather up Gull and the crew to come handle the payment. Hopefully she actually show's up next time."

(Cravendy Hound) Mindred seems satisfied with this explanation. “I do not see many of your kind around these parts, forgive me. I did not know.”

(Cravendy Hound) hMMMMM THE mcguffin -eyes- )) (Riylli Aliapoh) (ITLL SEE USE ONE OF THESE DAYS I SWEAR) (Rising Lotus) also did she steal all those linkpearls?)) (Cravendy Hound) “May this loan go well, and both our gilpurses benefit. As soon as you send the forms, my clerks will be at the ready.” Mindred leans back and then directs her attention to Baldur, who had so far been standing guard at the door. “Baldur, I’ve heard you’ve picked up the axe. You should’ve told me that was what your most recent loan was for! Why, you’ll break this old woman’s heart at this rate.”

(Cravendy Hound) Baldur looks awkwardly to the side as Mindred continues, a loving drawl in her voice. “If it’s herowork you’re looking for, why didn’t you come to me? I’ve got just the problem...a troublemaker hounding my caravans as of late. Innocents in need of help. Do your father proud, why don’t you? That’s what heroes do.”

(Cravendy Hound) Baldur looks exceptionally confused, but Mindred cuts him off. From how he responds, you come to realize that she probably talks over him often. “Call it intuition, but I have a feeling you’ll really grow from this encounter. Now, run along and play.” She turns to Rising and Riylli. “Hopefully, I’ll be speaking with your group soon.”

(Riylli Aliapoh) Riylli's ears immediately perked up with undisguised interest. "Oh! I can help out with that! I do a bit of hero work of my own y'know!" She says, leaning forward excitedly

(Cravendy Hound) Mindred smiles at Riylli’s interjection. “Perfect. I’ll be sure to pay you both, then.”

(Riylli Aliapoh) The Miqo'te grins, ears wiggling even. "Sure! You can use that same linkshell to contact me for that too! I'm sure with me and Baldur on the case your caravans got nothin' to worry about!" She says, flashing Baldur a friendly thumbs-up

(Rising Lotus) Rising used all of her restraint to not smack Riylli's ears clean off her head. "Sure, with any luck we'll run into Gull along the way." she punctuated her sentence with a bit, strained smile. "I 'spose we ought to be off then, our singer has kept you waitin' but we won't!"

(Cravendy Hound) Baldur sends Riylli an uneasy look, though it’s not because of her. He gives Mindred a quick bow and then steps out first to hold the door open for Riylli and Rising. There’s something on his mind.

(Rising Lotus) Rising Bows as well, placing a hand on Riylli's upper back to force her to bow as well. "Thank you for your time mam!"

(Riylli Aliapoh) Riylli grunts a bit as she's forced to bow, but manages to keep any particularly offensive comments to herself as she rises and follows Rising and Baldur out of the room. "I was totally gonna do that already y'know! I know how to be polite!" She mutters to the Roegadyn once away from the loan-shark's hearing

(Cravendy Hound) Baldur doesn’t stop walking until you all are gooood distance away. “Um, well that went well for you guys? I guess?” He fidgets at the hem of his glove, then lets out a sigh.

(Rising Lotus) Making sure they were out of earshot from not only the people of Rot's establishment but also Baldur, she glare down to Riylli. "If you don't know anythin' 'bout somethin', next time keep your mouth SHUT." she said the last part sharply. "You know what people like her do Riylli? They break legs an' fingers! She's gonna tell somethin's not right." she brought her hand to her face "An' we still ain't seen Cravs, so much to plan for the fishin' trip, an' now this..." her breathing was growing a bit rapid as Baldur approached. "A-Aye." she pushes it all down for now "considerin' we can't find our star an' all."

(Riylli Aliapoh) Riylli looks up at the Roegadyn. "Pssh, so what, I do that too!" She says dismissively, before wandering off and up towards Baldur to give him a friendly pat on the back alongside a fanged grin. "It did! Sounds like you and me are gonna be workin' together soon too! I'll be sure to share all the tips and tricks I've learned with ya, don't worry!"

(Cravendy Hound) Baldur takes the pat like a champ, does his best to mirror Riylli’s positive attitude. But ultimately, that troubled look returns to his face. “Yeah, I’m really thankful you jumped in too actually. Mindred's got a habit of...well. Let’s just say she tends to teach by tossing someone into the frying pan without any safety guards.”

(Cravendy Hound) In a lower voice, Baldur adds: “Sometimes, I feel like she wants me to fail. Either that, or I’m shit at meeting her lofty expectations.”

(Riylli Aliapoh) Riylli raised an eyebrow. "Ah, that type huh? Don't worry, I'll keep you safe." She said, giving him a slightly gentler pat. She turned back to Rising. "Well, aside from the rough teachin' methods, she seemed nice enough to me? Maybe were lookin' for someone else on the list after all?"

(Rising Lotus) Rising rubbed the bridge of her nose. "Well whatever may attack ain't going to be much a threat with us there. Done this sort of work thousands of times. Bandits aren't a big deal." she rolled her eyes as Riylli brought that up so close to the lad. "Loan sharks act nice at first, once your indebted to them that's when they strike." she'd reply back in a hushed tone.

(Cravendy Hound) “Bandits at my level...seems pretty fast, is all,” Baldur says. He looks over a paper containing the job’s details. “Sheesh. Mindred’s putting us to work right away. You got time? Like...now, now.”

(Riylli Aliapoh) Riylli blinked. "...Wait, like NOW now, now? Uh... I guess I'm free. Ish. Supposed to be huntin' tonight, but whatever... I'm sure Ava'll understand." She shrugged, then looked over to Rising for her opinion

(Rising Lotus) Rising raised an eyebrow at that. "So you're suddenly not runnin' smack into things?" she managed to chuckle lightly, probably really needing a lightened spirit after the night so far. "We might as well, not like Gull is 'round here or nothin'.." she sighed, chewing her lower lip as she glanced around incase Cravs would finally make an appearance.

(Cravendy Hound) Baldur nods. “Yeah, NOW now. This is nuts, right? Like, I’ve never done a guard job in my life, but this is weird, right?” But the money was too good to pass up. He’d risk it.

(Riylli Aliapoh) Riylli nods to Rising and Baldur in turn. "If you wanna be a hero, you gotta be ready to jump into action at a moments notice! Try not to worry so much, I got protection spells to keep you safe and Rising there is a great meatshield. You just focus on learnin', we'll handle the rough parts!"

(Rising Lotus) "Like I said it should be fine. Let's get it over with, I've dealth with a behemoth in Dravania I'm sure whatever might attack it here won't be an issue." she would hurry forward, only to realize Baldur was the one that knew where to go.

The Job -----

(Cravendy Hound) Waiting at the road’s junction is a caravan (C), “Red Spice Emporium” painted on the vehicle’s canvas like a big target. It’s handled by two employees - one to direct the chocobos, and another to ride in the back. They’re expecting guards, but are surprised to see Baldur with you two. One of them gives the boy a proud pat on the back and then, you’re off.

(Cravendy Hound) The first part of the trip is uneventful. Just orange orchards and hills of grass - maybe the occasional stray goobbue at a distance. But at the halfway mark, a small canister tumbles out from the right and you see it only for a second before it goes off. A flashbang!?

(Cravendy Hound) Something attempts to hit when the flashbang goes off. Roll to defend!

(Cravendy Hound) lmao buildup? what's that xD )) Random! Riylli Aliapoh rolls a 211. (Rising Lotus) Random! 267 (Cravendy Hound) Random! 586 (Cravendy Hound) me sweating as I watch the time :-) )) (Riylli Aliapoh) (I warned you!)

(Cravendy Hound) Whoever it was makes contact. You feel something hit you on your shoulder - a sleep dart? It’s fast acting, but with your combat experience, you resist for the moment.

(Rising Lotus) Good thing both of my shoulders are armored)) (Rising Lotus) kind of xD)) (Cravendy Hound) ayyy :D well one of them lol )) (Riylli Aliapoh) (Time to attack or are we still blind?) (Cravendy Hound) it was a flashbang so now your eyes are kinda blearly. can kinda see ))

(Riylli Aliapoh) Riylli was looking directly at the flashbang when it went off, learning a lot of new things about the world today. She tries to swing her staff blindly as she feels the dart hit her, only to realize quickly that wasn't going to help anything. Not able to do much else, she decides to cast stoneskin on herself to try and keep herself safe from whatever was inevitably coming next

(Cravendy Hound) Baldur hits the ground and crawls into the caravan for cover. “Someone’s shooting at us? Anyone catch them?” He looks to his right and finds one of the caravan’s employees, fast asleep. Shit.

(Rising Lotus) Rising had brought her arm up to shield her face as she saw the thing throw into the road, but still was a bit affected by the flash. The dart to her exposed shoulder caused her to shriek out, it didn't particularly hurt but she had a thing about needles now. She felt a numbness moving over her upper body. Cursing, she let her eyes readjust as she looked for their enemy.

(Cravendy Hound) More shots - from the north! At this distance, you see someone aiming a gun in your direction. Dressed in black and blue, their face is obscured by a wide-brimmed hat.

(Cravendy Hound) Baldur doesn’t listen. Instead, he uses his axe to tear open a crate within the caravan, causing its contents to spill. The crate converted into boards, he tosses Riylli her own wooden shields. “Use this! I’m going in!” Makeshift shield held forward, he blindly charges up the road.

(Cravendy Hound) When Rising charges forward, the bandit takes an uncertain step back. The sight of Baldur also moving forward gives them hesitation. Then, without a word, the bandit tosses a gas canister in between them, and it begins to spew an obscuring gas.

(Riylli Aliapoh) Riylli blinks and instinctively accepts the board, staring at it in confusion for a moment before realizing Baldur had run off. "What part of protection magic don't you get!" She called out, throwing the board to the side and immediately chasing after him. She does her best to cast stoneskin on him as well, but casting complex spells like that while moving would prove to be rather difficult. "Would! You! Stop! Running!"

(Cravendy Hound) The bandit seems distracted, or maybe confused. In his recklessness, Baldur chucks his axe at the bandit and grabs their attention. They easily move out of the way of the axe - but the attack succeeds in another way. From dodging the axe, the bandit takes a hit from Rising’s lance!

(Rising Lotus) The bandit was lucky enough to only get grazed in the side instead of being full on shish kabobed, but it was still a clean cut! Once the distance had been fully bridged, she let go of her spear with her armor fist and aimed to punch the bandit in the face, even in her drugged state there seemed to be a lot of aggression behind that strike, the bandit could only wonder how Rising's day was going.

(Riylli Aliapoh) Riylli manages to finally cast her stoneskin spell once they had both caught up with the assailant, showering Baldur in aether in order to ensure he would come out of this skirmish uninjured. She would need a moment to recover after that however, the amount of charging needed for that spell being much greater thanks to Baldur's recklessness

(Cravendy Hound) The bandit wobbles back, one hand at her bleeding side and the other with their gun at the ready. It would seem that the tranquilizer is kicking in, and they easily dodge Rising’s blow.

(Cravendy Hound) But when Baldur draws close, and when the kid and bandit lock eyes with each other, they both freeze in place. As if they’ve seen a ghost, or worse. A demon.

(Cravendy Hound) The smoke thickens, your vision grows grey with it. When it clears, the bandit is gone.

(Rising Lotus) The dashing and strong attacks had left Rising bereft of her strength, all the activity just pumping the tranq through her veins quicker. She stumbled back, swinging her spear in slow wide arc as the bandit vanished, hitting nothing and then falling to one knee, panting heavily.

Rising Lotus drops to her knee winded.

AN: Chapter 2 is here!! I decided to post it on here as normal, I hope you guys enjoy!

Summary: Albus discovers Scorpius is missing and must rely on the help of his family.

Time: Spring 2028

Extra info: James Sirius is married to my OC, Iris. They have two children.

It had been a few hours since Scorpius had left. Now at nearly 2pm, Albus was starting to grow concerned. Scorpius had a tendency to dawdle and get distracted by all the wonderful things at the market, but this was a bit ridiculous. Even for Scorpius. Panicking would do him no good, so he decided to try calling him. One ring...two...three...straight to voice-mail. Well, shit. He sighed, running his hand through his dark curls. He wasn't paranoid, but he decided to send him a text too, just for good measure.

Still nothing. But it hadn't been that long. Surely Scorpius would call shortly. Everything would be fine. But there was a pit in his stomach still, a strong feeling that something was wrong.

'Paranoia be damned.' Albus thought. 'I have to make sure he's okay.'

The farmer's market had cleared out mostly, several vendors were starting to pack up. Heart pumping in his chest, he approached the nearest one.

"Ms. Beaker!" He called.

"Al, dear." The old woman smiled kindly. "What can I do for you? I'm afraid I'm packing up my fruit for today."

"Have you seen Scorpius?" He asked impatiently. "My husband."

"Oh yes." Ms. Beaker said. "He bought my strawberries, such a nice young man. But I haven't seen him since. He seemed to have vanished."

"Vanished?" Albus repeated. "Thank- thank you. I've got to go now."

He walked briskly towards the end of the market, trying not to think of worse case scenarios. Just as he was hovering his finger over his phone, about to call him again, something made him stop in his tracks.

A discarded basket lay clumsily on the ground. Several strawberries were scattered clumsily across the floor. Its handles were bent, clearly messed around with, but at the same time recognizable to him. Scorpius brought it with him on market trips. He often joked that it made him look like Red Riding Hood, a muggle fairytale. Albus had even tied a silver ribbon to the handle as a gift.

"Scorpius..." He murmured, collecting the basket. Okay, maybe panicking was a good idea.

'Draco. I have to find Draco. He'll know what to do.'

Finding a secluded area to collect his thoughts, he apparated to the infamous Malfoy Manor. He didn't waste any time admiring the gilded gates or the fountains or even the proud peacocks grazing nearby. No, he had to find his father in law. Luck was on his side, because he found the older wizard outside, admiring a flowered hedge.

"Draco!" He gasped, rushing forward. He didn't care about being sweaty or rude for intruding. "Please- I need your...sir I need your help."

Draco raised his brow, now puzzled as to why his son in law had apparted to the Manor at such an odd time. "With what? Come here, son.”

"I can't- I don’t." Albus shook his head.

"Where's Scorpius?"

"That's just it. I don't know. He's..." He looked grim. "He's missing."

"What do you mean 'missing'?" Draco said, though he looked deeply worried. As if he already knew the worst was coming.

Albus made a frustrated noise. "I mean, he's gone! He was at the farmer's market earlier today and he's been gone for hours. I’ve called him using my mobile, but still nothing at all. No response, not even a text."

"And he didn't have any work or ...?"

"No."

"We can't assume anything. Perhaps you should wait here while I think of something."

"Draco, what else can we do? We can't sit here when he could be hurt or lost or-"

"Why weren't you with him?" Draco demanded, his temper rising. The two men were face to face, both more scared than angry. “How could my son be missing again?”

"In case you didn't realize Draco, he's a grown adult and can go wherever he likes." Albus retorted, not the least bit intimidated by his father in law. He may be shorter than him, but he was stubborn as sin, and nothing mattered more than Scorpius. "That isn't the point, I didn't think this would happen. Please, can we not argue and figure out what to do?"

"You're right." He sighed. He looked so much older, exhausted. "I'm sorry, us arguing isn't going to help. I know it wasn’t your fault."

For a brief moment, their eyes met. Two men that loved Scorpius in different ways.

"I don't want to think it's a kidnap, but if it is?"

Draco hummed. "The Malfoys have many enemies. It wouldn't surprise me." He fiddled with his wedding ring. "We can't assume though, surely we can..."

A letter dropped in front of them with a thud. It seemed to have appeared out of nowhere, no owl in sight.

Draco snatched it before Al could, scanning it over. He looked faint, dazed. Pale and sickly, he read it over once. Then again. His hands were trembling.

"Draco....Draco!" He waved his arm desperately. "What does it say?"

"It's Scorpius. You’re right. He...has been taken."

No. No this can't be happening. Not Scorpius. Anybody but Scorpius.

"By who?" Albus urged, growing more frantic by the second. "We can't waste time standing around or..." His eyes filled with desperate, terrified tears. "Is he alive?" He whispered. "I need to know."

"Yes, he's alive." Draco nodded gravely. "I don't know who they are, but they're Death Eater sympathizers. Read it- they want gold."

Malfoy,

If you want to see your son alive again, listen carefully.

Empty all the gold you have and bring it to us.

And, join our side to repent your sins of betraying the Dark Lord.

We will bring your son back safe and sound.

Send the money to ____ and come alone.

Albus sighed in relief. "They just want money, that's easy, isn't it? We can pool in however much they want."

"That's not the issue. Think, Albus!" Draco snapped. "I would give them all the gold in the Malfoy vaults if it meant Scorpius was safe. But who's to say they won't comply once they have it?"

Albus frowned, thinking for a moment. "We have to try at least. L...M...S, who could they be?"

"And that's not all they want. They want me to join their side. To make up for my betrayal of Voldemort."

"You wouldn't." He said. "Nor would Scorpius. Let's bring the note to Jamie and Iris, see if they can decipher it. Maybe my dad can-"

"I have to."

"What?" Albus looked alarmed. His heart was pounding as he waited for Draco to explain himself.

"They don't just want money. Look at it closer," He pointed at the note. "If I refuse..."

"They won't tell us where he is?"

Draco's grey eyes were wide with fear. "Worse. They'll kill him."

Albus refused to rest until he found some sort of clue of Scorpius' whereabouts. Draco had reluctantly opted to stay at the manor, in case more ransom notes arrived.

His first instinct was to visit James and Iris. Iris was an accomplished Auror, and James...well he was good for moral support. Lily was off in Romania, so she wouldn't be much help.Then contact his parents who would help as well. His Aunt Hermione too. He'd want the entire Ministry of Magic to help rescue Scorpius.

"I'll send you a patronus if something happens." Draco vowed. He reached a hand to Albus' shoulder. "Please bring him back safely."

Albus nodded firmly. "I will."

He used Draco's fireplace, holding his breath as he traveled through the floo network. His mind flashed of Scorpius' sweet blue eyes and dimpled cheeks. Youthful but wise beyond his years. His first best friend.

Please be alright. Please.

He tumbled out of the fireplace in a heap of soot. He grunted, standing up, too determined to focus on the state of himself. Probably a mess, hair askew and clothes covered in dirt.

"Bloody hell, Al!" His sister in law; Iris exclaimed. "What are you-"

"Iris." He gasped. "I need your help."

"You better sit down then. You look a right state." She said, looking the antithesis of Albus. Neat, pristine and elegant with her dark hair down her shoulders. A book she had been reading was on the floor, no doubt thrown to the side after being startled by Al's unexpected entrance. Little Henry, still a toddler even dropped his blocks.

"Alligator!" Henry piped, pointing at Albus.

"Yes, sweetheart it's Uncle Alligator." Iris said softly. Henry seemed satisfied with that, and went back to his blocks.

"Thanks," Albus murmured, taking a seat as she gestured to him. She flicked her wand casually, and a charmed teapot started to whistle. "Where's-"

"Jim's with Jazzy, off practicing Quidditch." She explained, levitating the mug towards his shaky hands. Albus would have chuckled at the nickname, but felt too numb. "Right then, what's happened?"

He explained the entire situation, but it came out so weakly, it felt like he was vomiting. His stomach was queasy with anxiety.

"It's all my fault. I should have been with him, then it wouldn't have happened." He put his head in his hands.

"Stop it, Al. Listen to me very carefully, okay?" Iris said, after examining the letter. "It's in no way your fault. So stop moping, chin up, I'll help you out. We all will. James, Teddy, Harry, Hermione, my mum...everyone will help find Scorpius."

Albus stared at his tea, eyes watering. "I don't know." He whispered. "I don't..."

"Take a deep breath," She placed a gentle, comforting hand to his shoulder. "We will. I swear on it."

"I'm scared."

"I know. It'll be okay."

"You don't know that."

"You're right. I don't. But still I'm going to send an owl to everyone. We'll need as many people as possible to decipher this note."

"Are you sure you want to help out I mean with..." Albus gestured at her barely visible bump.

Iris narrowed her eyes sharply, summoning parchment. "Yes. I've made up the guest room by the way. You're staying here."

"I don't need to..."

"You are. I insist. You don't need to be alone tonight. And don't argue. You're no good if you're exhausted." She lifted Henry in her arms, bouncing him. "Now shoo, I've got to finish this one letter."

"Who else are you contacting?" Albus tilted his head.

"The second best Auror I know, the one who can help us find him and decipher any codes from these people."

"Don't leave me in suspense, Iris."

"You won't love it...but..."

"Iris." He pressed.

"It's Rose."

Rose. Rose Granger-Weasley was an enigma. They had gotten along as kids, played gobstones and quidditch for hours but as they grew older, things were awkward and distant. After school, they remained cordial. Still, if she was supposedly their only hope, he would (begrudgingly) comply.

"Hey there baby brother." James opened the guest room door. "Dinner's ready!"

"I'm not hungry." Albus said flatly. How could he possibly eat or rest or do anything when Scorpius was alone somewhere.

"Listen, I know you're worried about Scorpius..." James said. "But Rose is here, and she read the note. She has an idea."

"And? What is it?" He snapped.

"Hi Al." Rose poked her head from behind James.

"What do you want?"

"Nice to see you too, Albus." She said coolly. "My idea is...well, it really requires us both to work together."

Albus scowled.

"We have to give them the gold.” She said. “It’s the only way, for sure that they’ll bring Scorpius back.”

“There’s no promise they’ll just hand him over!” Albus said. “Draco said, he said they might just be using it as a trick- to bait us.”

“If they do turn on us, we’ll have a team of Aurors to fight against them. Iris, meanwhile since she’s-”

Albus gestured vaguely to his midsection. “Pregnant.”

“We don’t want her going into a possible battle. I’m not putting her, or our baby at risk.” James said, his voice hoarse.

“She’ll be doing research on these kidnappers. Find out as much information as she can.” Rose explained. “We could find out why exactly they want Scorpius. Why are they still hung up over a war that ended three decades ago.”

“Because they’re insane?” Albus frowned. “Who cares why? They have him, and we have to get him back!”

“Think for once, Albus!” Rose said, and Albus felt his temper rising again. “Finding out the why gives us clues as to how to find him! I know you want to gallantly rescue him, but you have to think logically. We have to plan this out.”

“While you’re planning this, he could be hurt or…” Albus gulped, refusing to say it. He knew they were all thinking it. “I’m not wasting time.”

“While you’re both arguing,” James interrupted. “You’re wasting precious time. I think Rose is right. Draco brings the gold to them, they bring Scorpius. If they don’t, we’ve got our team to kick their arses until they cry.”

“I wasn’t going to put it that way but…”

“Draco already wrote his response. Now all we need to do is find them.”

Albus wasn’t too confident in this plan. It sounded deeply flawed. But, if this was the one way to get Scorpius back, he refused to argue anymore.

Matt Zine Progress Update (6)

This is the second-to-last zine-related post. Every zine is at its home now, and with nothing else incoming, we figured we could ramble a little about things we learned. Because we can!

(It’s cool if you want to skip reading this, haha. Donation receipt coming soon!)

Back in late September 2017, Mod D made a throwaway comment about how cool it would be if Matt, her favourite character, had a whole zine of his own. Mod E (whose fave is also Matt) saw that comment and, said this:

...We’ve come a long way since our initial conception.

Mod D came up with wordmark concepts after Mod E coined the best Holt pun ever. \o/ The inspiration for our final choice was like... 80s vapourwave throwback, with cyberpunk/EDM influences and a reverberating O that just screams out to the masses. :D Later, we ended up including an illustration by @crowzep to our brand for funsies.

Some interesting notes about creation logistics:

We found that both deadlines and flexibility were necessary. In a team of 30+ people, something will always come up -- and we found that having monthly deadlines is important so people have milestones to look forward to, and flexibility is important if things come up.

Also, check-ins are important because it means people have started work -- which means people are less likely to drop. ;) (We did have a grand total of 0 drops, not including people who denied our initial invitation.)

We’re super happy with the way we grouped the anthology -- we think we got a really cool narrative out of a diverse group of creators!

Email process with two mods is hella easy. One mod writes the email, and the other mod looks it over and hits send. Our participants were all super cool people, so communications were ultimately a good time.

Doodle pages are fun for community building!

Also, we celebrated season 4, family, winter, the new year, love, math, and moms.

Some notes about the orders process:

Layout needs to start a good month or two before preorders. Early layout makes it easier to work at a leisurely pace while slotting in complete works as they come in -- without dealing with layout and preorders at the same time.

Holy shit, orders flooded in during the last weekend of preorders. It is normal for orders to increase near the end of a preorders period -- it’s financially smart to hold on to your money as long as possible, and it also means less of of a wait time between payment and receipt of the zine. But - we didn’t think we were going to hit 100 orders, and it was such a pleasant surprise when we nyoomed past that milestone. :D

Ordering product is a restless endeavour (or at least, restless for people who aren’t doing this as, like, a full-time job). We started right after preorders ended and we made an effort to be stay top of communications with the vendors. (We’re pretty proud of our turnaround time.)

We did get a break while waiting for the vendors to send us product (since there was nothing we could do, we just relaxed :P). After that, we went back to the crunch time mindset of creating mailing labels and sending mail.

We ordered extra zines to replace anything that went missing, but we didn’t realise that since we were only ordering 100ish zines and not 500ish, there would statistically be fewer missing orders. So -- we had extras.

Selling extras with very limited stock (on a limited storefront plan) is nerve-wracking. We sold five charms very quickly, and waiting for the sixth charm to sell was stressful because we wanted to close inventory immediately after.

Overall, we had a lot of fun creating this zine, and we’re v happy with the results! Our donation post will be up sometime this weekend. Here’s to the completion of a zine, and to more great Matt content! 🥂

Free 65" 4k TV, thanks for the great customer service!

In 2014 I ordered a 65” 4k TV online from a popular company, Paid about $1700 and some change for it. It was one of the first 4k TV’s available. No 4k content is available at this time but I needed a TV and it seemed like the logical choice to be ready for the future. Biggest TV yet, so big in fact that not only can you watch TV but you can get a tan at the same time from the screen, yeee ha!

Fast forward to Dec 2015. 4k Content is now available, yay! However I was not able to play 4K content on my 4k TV. WTF? After I bought my TV, the industry decided to integrate some sort of encryption called HDCP 2.2 between the media player and the TV. This new standard required the TV to have a decoder now, which my TV did not have. HDCP 2.2 is copy prevention technology designed to make it hard for someone to copy a 4k movie. Because that’s never failed with every media type in the past right? All players use HDCP 2.2 including Cable boxes and such so I could not view 4k now or in the future, ever.

First I called the company I bought it from, they said call the market place vendor, I called them and they said contact the Manufacturer. The Manufacturer is the one that told me about the new encryption requirement and there wasn’t going to be any recalls or updates available.

So I called the company I ordered it from and communicated the findings and I said I’d like a partial refund. I paid a premium for 4k and didn’t received it. Other than that I’m happy with the TV. Looking at similar TVs without 4k I averaged out the difference and suggested that amount, just a couple hundred.

I didn’t think it was fair to request an exchange or a full refund. So that’s what I asked for. Lot of phone transfers later they told me no, contact the market place vendor. I did, same thing. Went back and forth with managers and supervisors. Everyone was nice but both I and the other parties were firm where we stood.

What I was asking for I felt was pretty reasonable. I spent a few thousand a year with this vendor for over a decade, never asked for anything until now. I was shown the door.

This point I figured I’d give the law a try. Haven’t taken anyone to small claims before and don’t even know if I could take a business to one. But I figured worst case I’ll lose $100 bucks in court filing fees, could lose but gain knowledge of the system and how everything works. Cheap education is the way I looked at it.

Figured since they wouldn’t be reasonable, why should I? Now I’m seeking a full refund and keeping the TV (for my time). So I performed a couple hours of research and came up with my plan. First I sent a certified letter to the main company gave them thirty days’ notice, if I didn’t hear anything I was filling in small claims. I heard nothing.

So I stopped by the local court house because they don’t have the documents online. How I’m going to sue is all about the advertisement which states “Watch all your favorite TV and Movies in 4k!” To date I haven’t been able to do that, I can also prove I’d never be able too.

This point you’re thinking I will sue for False Advertising. That would make sense. But at least in my state that is not an item you can sue for in small claims. This is where my research came in handy. I filed for breach of contract. The contract being the advertisement stating “Watch all your favorite TV and Movies in 4k!”. That was the purchase agreement. I included my evidence and print screens of the advertisements along with my invoice.

Wasn’t sure what was going to happen. I mean the TV at this point is over a year old already. I’m sure they are going to get me on “past the return date”, which has been there position from the start on why they wouldn’t help me.

Two weeks until the hearing I received a letter from the court. I didn’t understand it entirely so I called the court house. They said the company didn’t respond to the Summons so I would not be required to show up for court. If the party did end up showing up the case wouldn’t be heard, a new court date would be set to which we would all attend. If the company doesn’t show I win by default.

I didn’t realize courts worked this way and it saved me taking time off work, how awesome!

Company never showed, I won by default. They sent an appeal a day late past the dead line, but what really sealed the deal is they forgot to sign it lol. To clarify I’m not entirely certain if that was called an appeal. The form they sent intended to force the case out of small claims and up a tier to the next level of court so they could bring in a lawyer.

To clarify some states an attorney may represent you in small claims, other states they cannot. My state you are required to represent yourself. In this case the company would have to fly a company rep out for the hearing.

I made sure to e-mail and CC all parties I communicated with thru this entire ordeal to let them know I won and asked when I would receive my check. I did that to illustrate how much a few hundred buck refund request set them back. $1700 and some change, $100 and some change for court fees, and a free 65” TV.

There was one rep I singled out because they were quite rude to me. After sending that e-mail I sent another one to that special person . I wish I could find it. But it included me standing in front of the TV with a smile in a pose like I’m show casing the TV for a sale, lol. I inserted that sucker right in the body of the e-mail to save them the task of double clicking the attachment. No response sadly.

I spoke to their legal department, after asking for my check they said an appeal was sent. I said “You sent it a day late and didn’t sign it, I won the judgment “Now what?” I was placed on hold while they checked and confirmed the fax they sent was indeed unsigned and past the cutoff date. “Oh, well send the check”.

I deposited the check using my Bank phone app. Why? So I could frame the judgment papers with the physical check in the frame. It’s been hanging on my wall since. Never thought I’d walk away with a couple thousand dollar TV for a couple of hours of work. Great trade.

Gets better. So I looked around and there was one company that makes this decryption device for this exact purpose! For people that bought 4k when it was bleeding edge and never got to use it. I think I paid like 200 bucks for it. Once it arrived I connected it and it does work! I can now use my Roki in 4k and watch 4k content, looks amazing! About a week later the company that made the decryption device HD-Fury was sued and they had to take it off their website. I was pretty lucky to get one when I did. Been going strong 3 years watching 4k Content pretty happy.

Hello Drama; its been a while..

I don’t think I’ve posted personal drama in a while but I feel like I need to get this off my chest. Cause this didn’t just effect me but it has pretty much torn up my little group of friends which was not the intent.

Heres some background before we start…

Emerald City Comic Con for those who have followed my little slice of tumblr knows is a yearly nerd pilgrimage my friends and I do every year. We all arrange rides and drive down from Vancouver, BC to Seattle, WA for a 4-5 day where we eat, drink and buy way too much stuff at the convention. We’ve all gone pretty much as a group for the last… shit 4 or five years? Possibly more? Now last year I spent waaaay to much money as the Canadian Dollar was in the tank ( still is pretty much lol) and I went a little over board. Now Hotel prices have steadily been going up etc etc so even without the spending I was already over budget. Now early on this year I had decided that I wasn’t going to go to ECCC in 2018 due to how much hotel and such costs. The tickets themselves aren’t so bad but if you’re not a local in Seattle or don’t have a friends couch to sleep on we’re talking close to $1000 CAD for 4 nights in a hotel even with the Convention discount. That includes parking but still…. Yikes right? I went to Disneyland (flight & Hotel) for only like $30 more than that. That’ $1000 doesn’t even include my convention pass! So needless to say I wasn’t going since my family is planning on doing like a week plus in Disneyland next summer so that was what I was going to save up for instead. It bummed me out because ALL of my friends were going to this (except maybe one but we will get to that shortly) and it was my first time not going to be able to join them. But it was my decision and I was going to stick with it. Now fast forward too maybe a week or so ago right before the tickets went on sale everyone was excited and stuff and I was pretty much over it at this point when my friend who hadn’t planned on going either cause he kept saying how much it sucked, (we’ll call him R) texted me and asked if I wanted to just go for the Saturday. Now a part of me was unsure because we would have to get up at the crack ass of dawn to drive the 2 and a half hours to Seattle, find expensive Downtown parking and get our passes, walk around all day only to have to drive the 3 and a half ours back. Now my friend R doesn’t drive. Doesn’t know how; takes transit or bums rides from our friends who drive all the time. So I would have to do all of this driving. I’m unsure but he ramps it and says he’ll split gas and parking so without really thinking it through ( probably out of desperation of wanting to go even at a small scale) I agree. Everyone I tell that we’re going for just the day say I’m fucking looney cause I’m pretty much doing all the work here. It’s not like if I get tired I can trade off with someone to drive. 2 and a half hours isn’t really long but… I mean when you’re that tired it can feel like a super long time. Also I’d have to drive him home, which he lives like a half an hour the opposite direction of my house so that’s adding another hour onto my drive time. But I’m like cool sure. Then we never talk about it again. Until yesterday morning.

My friend K texts me and says she’s accidentally ordered 1 too many Vendor passes. She got her table this year in Artist alley and wanted to know if I could come with and help her and her boyfriend ( who happens to be my best friend) run her booth. Now I’ve helped run her booth for conventions off and on for the past couple years. At Local ones and for the three years at ECCC ( except 2017’s convention, she didn’t get chosen and thus didn’t come with us) so I’ve got experience in how she likes to run shit. At first I tell her no, I’m doing the one day thing and I can’t afford the hotel alone plus everything's probably all booked by now even if I could find someone. But then she says to ask our friend J as she and like 3 of our other friends are sharing a room ( Like every year) and could possible have space for me too?

She said to let her know by Friday so if I don’t go she can try and e-mail the convention ppl to try and get a refund ( tickets like $125 usd) because she can’t sell it like a normal ticket. So I go to work and not really think about it again till like later in the evening. I’m having dinner with C ( K’s bf and my best friend ANNND R’s best friend) and the ticket offer comes up during our conversation. He says to give our friend J a text about their hotel situation, prices and what not because if it’s cheap, why not? He knew I was pretty bummed about not going the full weekend and wasn’t too stoked about driving so much ( he wasn’t too happy about it on my behalf it seemed either. he’s an overprotective puppy). So I ask J and their 5th person they were going to have in their room bailed and they had space. I’d get a blow up mattress and it would be $150 USD for 3 nights for my half of the hotel ( roughly as taxes/hotel parking etc). So thats $275.00 USD AND they offered to drive me there and back, provide the air mattress etc. I tell C and its like how can you say no to that? He says do it. Now first thing I worry is how R is going to take it. He gets upset easy and yeah I’m being kind of a dick on bailing on him. The Con is in 4 months as in that time we could figure out a way for him to either get there without me driving him or help him sell the tickets. However even without committing to it 100% at the time I feel bad, I hate bailing on people like that.

So this morning I send this huge text to R explaining the situation and apologise for the whole thing but offer to help him work out how to either sell them or figure a way there and back. R loses his absolute shit, says I’m the worst friend ever. Says this is the worst possible thing I could ever do to him and this is basically ending our friendship. I then ask him how could something like this be a friendship ender ( I’ve forgiven him him for FAR worse offences on shit he’s pulled on me but THAT'S a whole other traumatizing thing that we don’t talk about anymore because it almost gives me a panic attack thinking of it) then offer again to help make other arrangements for him to either come along or sell the tickets. He then accuses me of going behind his back and plotting with our other friends to screw him over ( not true like wtf?) then proceeds to block my phone number and blocks me on all social media before we can work anything out. ( there are 6 texts in total, two from me and the rest are him freaking at me) In the end he ends up blocking 5 different friends of ours ( though he’s re-added K I later find out) and proceeds to shit talk me on FB where I can’t see and blocks anyone who tries to stick up for me ( Thus the 4 friends still blocked). I mean I understand he’s upset but we are in our mid 30’s for fuck sakes! We’re fucking adults! Why can’t we have a fucking adult conversation and work something out? I admit it was shitty to bail on him however I offered to help him find another solution to get there, to help sell them both and even offer to just straight pay for my half to compensate. However none of these offers were taken because he didn’t get his own way and would rather flip his shit.

Needless to say my whole day was fucked. I felt horrible but the more nasty shit he posted on FB that I got told about and shit he’s been pulling on everyone else, I started to feel less bad for the whole thing. There was no grand plot to screw him over; I simply took advantage of an opportunity only for it to fuck everything up. I tried to keep it just between the two of us to keep damage to a minimum cause we share best friends and it's not fair to drag C into the middle of this or any of our other friends for that matter but he insisted on it. So about an hour after I started this text rant K texted and asked if she could call me; which of course I say yes. After an hour and a half talk I go over my side on what's happened and what we can do to fix it and keep C out of it. K and I both love C ( in very different ways mind you LOL) and her and I are going to do our hardest to keep him out of it. Her and I have both agreed not to talk about the situation in front of him and try to keep the others from doing so as well ( god knows what R has sent him). C doesn’t take conflict really well (Neither does myself and K to be honest but C more so) and I told K I really don’t want C to be dragged into it….

Like fuck I didn’t want anyone to get dragged into it but R is a drama queen and I’m the villain.

SO YA! Fuck my life!

Anyone want to go see the New Star Wars Movie with me? Cause R is selling off my first showing ticket for that. Anyone want to see a movie with a shitty villainous person?

Petla was always small. People sometimes mistook him for a halfling, rather than a gnome because of it. Even then, there were halflings who were bigger than him. He never wondered why he was so small (though he often heard his father lament that they must have done something wrong), nor did he particularly care.

Sure, it was a bit more work to use the machines at the foundry. And true, even the specially bred riding dogs were too big for him to ride. And yes, it was hard to keep up when everyone’s legs were longer. But Petla never let any of that slow him down.

Like any good member of the Skiflaugd family, Petla learned how to be an inventor. It wasn’t his passion, but he was a clever young boy. It was simple enough to make the pedals and levers longer, and not that much more complicated to build a small chariot for the dogs to pull.

The one thing that Petla was never able to do on his own, was play an instrument. Oh, he loved music, and he tried to learn, but there were no instruments small enough for him. He was no luthier. And though he was able to make automatons that could play the instruments, he was never quite able to create a device that would allow him to play.

“You could commission a lute made just for you,” Ravak, his wife suggested one night, after his latest attempt to be able to play had snapped the neck of the lute.

“I would have to travel all the way to Ulah. That’s a ten-day journey!”

“We can spare you for the twenty days,” Ravak assured him.

Petla shook his head. “It wouldn’t just be twenty days, my love. I would have to stay for at least a few so the luthier could make measurements. And then would I make the journey again when the lute is finished? Or should I wait in the city for however long it takes?”

“But music is your passion...”

“Passion doesn’t put food on the table.”

And so Petla gave up hope of ever playing an instrument himself. But Ravak knew how much it meant to her husband. So she sent letters to Ulah, inquiring of several luthiers if they might tell her what sort of measurements they might need to make a lute for Petla.

After two months, three letters came back.

One declared that it would be impossible to make a lute any smaller without horribly distorting the sound. Another said that they could not do it without seeing Petla. The third said they were unsure if written measurements would work--could they send a model of some sort?

Ravak scrimped and saved, and never mentioned her plan to Petla. She would work all day at the foundry, then work on mending until it was time to sleep. Petla encouraged her to cut back on something--she was wearing herself out. They had made enough money at the foundry--they didn’t need her to work extra jobs.

Ravak just shrugged and said there could be something they’d need the money for.

Petla thought it strange, but he started making small machines and selling them so that whatever it was Ravak was saving for, she’d have enough money sooner.

The little devices were quite popular. Music boxes with dancing figures, counter-top clocks that could be set to chime a reminder, mailboxes that would carry the mail from the front of the house to somewhere inside, and even dolls that could say a phrase or two.

Soon Petla wasn’t just making the devices and selling them to whomever was interested; he was getting orders for specific things.

In three months, Petla had enough orders, and was making enough money that he didn’t have to work at the foundry any more. Two months after that, it was more profitable for Ravak to stay home and help.

Petla became so caught up in his little devices that Ravak wondered if she should still get a model made of him to send to the luthier in Ulah.

“Are you happy, my dear?” she asked him one night. They were both exhausted from a long day spent hunched over tiny gears and sprockets and springs. Petla had missed a spot of grease on his cheek, but Ravak was too tired to bother mentioning it.

“Of course I am; why do you ask?”

“I know this isn’t what you’d envisioned your life being like.”

“Ah, my love, it is every Skiflaugd’s dream to be a tinkerer...a craftsmen that people clamour to posses the devices of. I never imagined I might be one, but then I never thought about making things for other people when I was younger.”

Ravak smiled and wished him sweet dreams and thought that perhaps she didn’t need to worry about the model for the luthier. At least until she saw him working on one of his abandoned instrument playing devices.

She firmed her resolve and gathered the money she needed, and paid a seamstress to make a model of Petla. It was difficult to do without him knowing what they were up to, and took several months of secretive work to complete.

Ravak had just shipped the model off to Ulah when Petla announced they would be going to the city themselves.

“What? Why?” Ravak demanded.

Petla grinned and waved a letter in the air. “I have been commissioned by Krisora Lightguard to create a quartet of musical automatons. We are to present them at the opening of the new temple, where they will give their debut performance before being permanently placed adjacent to the altar.”

“That is a grand undertaking--how soon is the new temple opening?” Ravak asked.

“If we leave for Ulah in three months, we will make it to the city with a few days to spare.”

So Petla and Ravak went to work. They restricted how many other orders they would take--just enough so they could keep their home and eat every day. Though Petla had made many automatons before, he wanted these ones to be special.

It was hard work, but they were able to build the automatons. The four metal humanoids perched on stools, their limbs made of delicate-looking lacework metal, and their bodies swathed in silk robes. Their bald heads were polished to a rich shine, and glittering gems served as their eyes.

“They are beautiful,” Ravak said.

“Yes, but now the truly hard part begins--we must teach them the songs they are to play.”

Each automaton could have a wax cylinder with bumps and grooves on it placed into a slot in their backs. The pattern on the cylinders determined how each one would move. And carving the cylinders so that each automaton not only played correctly, but in time with each other, was a time-consuming process of trial and error.

They had gotten three of the four to play together by the time they had to leave. The automatons were carefully loaded into a covered wagon, and they set out with a six-wagon caravan for the city of Ulah. Every day, Petla would carve a cylinder and every night he would test the automatons. It wasn’t until the final night that he was able to have them play in sync.

“I will be remembered as the greatest inventor for this,” he said with a tired smile as he placed the cylinders into a velvet-lined box.

“It is an impressive accomplishment,” Ravak agreed. “And I’m very proud of you.”

“Ah, my love, I could not have done it without you!”

Ravak laughed. “You could have, you just would have been slower. But I have arranged for a gift for you in Ulah--to give to you the morning of the temple opening.”

“A gift? You didn’t need to get me anything,” Petla exclaimed.

“You deserve it, after all your hard work.”

Petla and Ravak rested easily that night. In the morning, they finished the journey to the city and took the automatons to the new temple. Krisora Lightguard herself met them in the plaza outside the temple. She was instantly recognizable by the burn scar covering half her face and neck. Rumour said a full half of her body was covered by that scar, but the gold and black armour she always wore kept such speculation as mere gossip.

“Welcome to Ulah, Master Tinkerer. I trust you had no difficulties in your journey?”

“None at all, Lady Lightguard,” Petla replied. “Where would you like them set up?”

“Is there anything special about setting them up?” Krisora asked.

“Not particularly. They are delicate, but they need only be placed where you want them,” he explained.

“Then my page and the temple acolytes can set it up. Go, explore the city. You still have a few hours before the ceremony and unveiling.”

Petla and Ravak didn’t need to be told twice. Ulah was a massive city full of people from all over the world. They saw more races than they could name, and were tempted by foods from places they had never heard of. It was enough to make Petla truly feel small.

Ravak quietly asked a food vendor for directions and then guided their wanderings to the luthier.

“We should go in,” Ravak suggested, pointing to the sign of a lute and hammer swinging over the door.

Petla’s childish glee at sights of the city faded and he shook his head. “Why?”

“You always wanted to come to Ulah and get an instrument made for you,” she replied. “Well, we’re in Ulah.”

“That was a silly dream. Besides, we could only afford this trip because of how much Lady Lightguard is paying for those automatons.”

“Please? Let’s go inside,” Ravak begged.

“Fine, but just for a moment.”

Ravak beamed and took his hand. They entered the simple store front of the luthier’s shop. It was only ten feet wide and five feet deep, though a larger workroom could be glimpsed behind a polished counter. Ravak strained on her tiptoes to tap the bell atop the counter.

“Why would you do that?” Petla hissed.

“So we can speak to the luthier--there are no instruments on display, so if we want to see something, I’m sure we must ask.”

Before Petla could say anything in response to her reasoning, a lanky man with oversized ears and wild hair arrived. His eyes widened and a huge smile split his face. “Petla!” he cried with delight.

“Do...do I know you?” Petla stared at him in shock.

“Ah, what poor manners I have! I am Lamin, and I have wondered when you would come to my shop,” the man said, still smiling. “And this must be your wife, Ravak. You are as lovely as I imagined.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Don’t you know?” Lamin asked, his smile slipping.

“It’s a surprise,” Ravak cut in quickly. “Could you bring it out?”

“Ah! Of course.” Lamin hurried back into the workroom. They could hear him moving things around and he called to them, “It was a delight to work on, though I had to use a different wood than normal to preserve the sound. Here it is!”

Lamin returned with a tiny lute cradled in his hands. He handed it over to a wide-eyed Petla and smiled with satisfaction.

Petla stared at the beautiful instrument in his hands. It was made of a dark wood and had been polished until it shone. A careful lacework pattern was carved into the wood, as delicate as the automatons he’d created.

“Ravak...Mr. Lamin...this is beautiful, it’s...” Petla had to stop and rub at his eyes. He’d never imagined he’d actually hold an instrument small enough for him.

“Go on, try it,” Ravak encouraged.

Petla tentatively strummed the strings. His fingers fumbled and he winced at the sour notes, but neither Ravak nor Lamin said anything. They both smiled and he continued to pluck out a tune, becoming more sure of himself with every note.

“You are very good, for having never had a proper instrument before,” Lamin said. “I hope you will think of me if you should ever need another instrument!”

Ravak assured him they would, they bid him farewell, and returned to the temple.

Petla was still in such a daze at receiving the instrument that he didn’t notice the large crowd gathered in the plaza, or the small cluster of young men standing next to the sheet-covered automatons.

“Something is wrong, my dear,” Ravak whispered.

“Hm?”

She pointed to the huddle of men. “They are dressed in temple robes, and seem to be worried about something.”

Petla tsked. “I hope they didn’t break one of my automatons.”

Petla and Ravak pushed through the crowd and approached the men. One spotted them and nudged the others so they all fell silent.

“The ceremony will start soon, you should wait over there,” one of them said, gesturing back toward the crowd.

“I’m Petla, I made the automatons. Is something wrong with them?”

The men exchanged glances and then the one who had spoken before said, “Not with your automatons. It is Lady Lightguard...”

“What’s wrong? We spoke with her only a short time ago and everything seemed fine,” Ravak sadi.

“She...has episodes, from time to time. We try to keep it from the public, but people are going to realize something is wrong if she doesn’t come out soon.”

“Perhaps we can help?” Ravak offered.

“That is kind of you, but Lady Lightguard is dangerous in this state. She cannot recognize friend or enemy, and is bathed in living flames. Anyone who gets too close is burned--and the unlucky ones are burned so badly they do not survive.”

“Let us try anyway,” Petla replied.

“Petla, if they say it isn’t safe, then it isn’t safe,” Ravak whispered.

“I can go myself, if you’d like to stay out here, but I’m going to see if I can help.”

Nothing Ravak or the men said could change his mind, so Petla entered the new temple with only his lute.

“Lady Lightguard?” he called out softly. There was no response, but he saw a flickering light from behind a half-closed door.

Petla walked to the door and pushed it open. Inside, Krisora Lightguard hovered two feet off the ground, a fiery nimbus surrounding her. Her eyes were smoldering coals and the scar on her face pulsed with each flicker of the flame surrounding her. The heat in the room was so intense it stole Petla’s breath away.

Krisora turned toward him, her face utterly blank of emotion. The flames roiled faster and she reached an arm toward him. A spear of fire shot forward and he stumbled back. The flame hit the door and consumed it in a matter of seconds--though the frist didn’t spread, there was nothing but a small pile of ash left behind.

“Lady Lightguard, I do not know what living nightmare you are trapped in, but the people need you,” Petla said, peeking around the corner into the room.

Krisora stared blankly at him. He couldn’t tell if she had heard him, or if she didn’t care.

Petla clutched his lyre and stepped back into the room, strumming the strings. The heat beat at him, but he plucked out the start of a simple song. It was soft and sweet, and one of the prayer-songs of the temple.

Krisora cocked her head to the side and continued to stare at him. But she didn’t fire any more flames toward him. So Petla continued to play.

He played through the song, and then another, and then a third. His fingers were bruised and bloody--he had no callouses from practicing to protect them--but he kept playing.

Krisora’s nimbus of fire shrank and she lowered to the ground. By the end of the fourth song, her flames had gone out entirely. Only her smoldering coals for eyes remained.

Petla tried to play a fifth song, but could only make it a few bars in before having to give up. He wouldn’t be able to even look at a pencil for at least a week.

“Master Tinkerer?”

“Yes! Are you well, Lady Lightguard?”

Krisora pressed a hand to her head and her coal-eyes faded into a normal dark brown. “I believe I had another episode, but how are you unhurt?”

Petla held up his lute. “I played for you. It seemed to calm you.”

“How did you know that would work?”

“I didn’t, I just hoped.”

Krisora laughed in surprise. “You are either a fool, or the bravest man I have ever met.”

Petla grinned. “You have to be fearless when you’re smaller than everyone else.”

“I suppose that’s true,” she agreed with a smile. “Though I don’t think we can call you a master tinkerer any longer. You are a master musician instead.”

And so Krisora introduced Petla as a Master Musician instead of Master Tinkerer when she unveiled the automatons. He placed the cylinders in their places and stood back as the four metal people played the first song he had used to calm Krisora.

Rumours spread about the mysterious little man. How could a musician create such complex automatons? Maybe he hired a wizard to capture his skill and put it into the beings. Perhaps he travelled to another world, where metal beings are alive, and he brought them back to pretend to be automatons. Or maybe he is simply such a talented musician that he was able to teach the constructs how to play music.

The rumours spread and grew with each telling, until they took on a life of their own. Petla, the gnome musician, became Petla, the greatest musician, became Petla, the amazing. Though the stories grew, they always contained that kernel of truth, that he had made the automatons--however he had done so.

And did you hear that he also faced down a dragon with nothing but his lute? Didn’t even get a single burn.

He really is the bravest, most foolish gnome to ever live.

How to negotiate refunds and conduct Zoom ceremonies

Tracy Meng and Kyle Matson had planned to get married Saturday, March 28. Instead, they’re hosting a Zoom ceremony.

Welcome to the new normal.

Meng, 32, a vice president at Checkout.com and Matson, 32, Chief of Staff at Robinhood, had booked a destination wedding for 120 guests. The two live in San Francisco and had been working for months to assemble of team of vendors from both Hawaii and California to meet in Kauai.

Like thousands of other Americans, Meng and Matson had to cancel their wedding as states made the decision to limit group gatherings and the world has shifted to social distancing as a way of life.

While Meng and Matson are still planning on having a wedding in Kauai in August, assuming life returns to normal, the two will be celebrating from their home on the date of the wedding. Instead of a normal wedding, they’ll be doing a virtual reception where a group of 30 guests, including the wedding parties, will bring dinner and drinks to their computers. Their guests will log in to Zoom, the video conference platform, which has become one of the few runaway business success stories of the past few weeks. Zoom shares have doubled in value since Jan. 31 at a time when the broader S&P 500 has fallen about 20%.

“At this point we just have to be OK with things not being perfect, knowing that we’re not in control,” Meng said in an interview.

The U.S. wedding industry takes in billions of dollars each year, with venues, photographers, florists, caterers, videographers and other vendors establishing full-time businesses around the events. A U.S. wedding cost $44,000 on average in 2018, according to “Brides” magazine. Wedding ceremonies have come to an abrupt halt from coast to coast as large gatherings have been banned nationwide.

The Pleasantdale Chateau, a wedding venue in West Orange, New Jersey, has already canceled all of its weddings for the next eight weeks, costing it about $2 million in revenue, said Santiago Sevilla, director of operations. Sevilla said he laid off 90% of his staff last week, including waiters, bartenders and cleaning people who have worked together at The Pleasantdale Chateau for more than 10 years.

“There’s no work for them,” Sevilla said. “At least if we lay them off, unemployment can cover them. I haven’t done this much crying in years.”

Rescheduling madness

The Pleasantdale Chateau is now hoping to rely on a combination of insurance and loans from the government, including a national stimulus package that is dedicating $350 billion in loans to small businesses to help survive the year. The lack of certainty about when weddings can be rebooked is adding to everyone’s stress.

“I’ve got brides panicking with weddings in September,” said Sevilla.

Given venue policies, Lavish Weddings, a wedding planner based in San Diego, is working as a conduit to control the flow of cancellations by only allowing customers to nix weddings through the end of June, said owner Christine Ong Forsythe. Lavish helps plan about 40 weddings per year, working with vendors to coordinate around a time and setting.

Now the majority of Forsythe’s time is being spent working with vendors and clients to come up with agreeable cancellation policies around deposits. Forsythe estimates about half of her vendors have given couples 100% of their money back if they’ve had to cancel their wedding, though nearly all have first tried to reschedule before canceling and keeping some of the deposit.

“Obviously not everyone has pandemic in their contract,” Forsythe said. “It’s hard for our clients and it’s hard for vendors. We understand if they can’t do a full refund — a lot of people can’t. It’s not their choice to cancel.”

Rescheduling events means vendors can’t book a different client for the future date, so they’re doubling up on reservations and collecting only one fee instead of earning two fees.

Moreover, rebooking events for later this year or next year creates hectic weekends and extremely long hours, said Jeremiah Cox, a wedding videographer at ParkLife Wedding Films in Champaign, Illinois. Cox said his company tries to avoid back-to-back weddings because the company films and edits on the fly, showing a six minute highlight film of the day’s events to guests at the reception that night. The work is frequently 12 hours of “nonstop, go-go-go work,” he said.

“It’s going to be crazy,” Cox said. “We’ve never taken back to back days before. But it’s desperate times.”

The National Association for Catering & Events chapter of Maine recently held a Zoom conference call for its members championing a campaign from HoneyBook, a business software company for wedding planners and related vendors, entitled “#RescheduleDontCancel.”

The Maine-based chapter has been brainstorming ideas around rescheduling with clients, including altering weddings to smaller groups of people who might be comfortable in certain situations.

“Maybe you have 20 people, but they all get caviar and you livestream the wedding to everyone else,” said Katrina Petersen, the Program Director of NACE Maine and an owner of a wedding venue. “Maybe you send some gifts to grandma and grandpa. Maybe each couple at the wedding gets their own table to keep distance, and they each get a nine-course dinner and champagne.”

But many March, April and May weddings are destination weddings, which have led to more outright cancellations than postponements than would occur in-season for cold weather U.S. states, such as Maine. That’s caused vendors and couples to start looking at fine print around contracts they never thought they’d have to examine to figure out what deposit money can or should be refunded.

“This is a somewhat unprecedented situation,” Jonathan M. Dunitz, a lawyer at Verrill in Portland, Maine, said during the NACE Maine conference call. “Even lawyers are scrambling to figure out what’s going to happen with contracts.”

Scouring contracts

The primary issue is defining a so-called “force majeure,” or “act of God,” which many contracts contain that say certain external acts allow vendors to keep prepaid fees. But the language around what’s covered by force majeure is typically very specific, and “very few cover nationwide epidemic,” Dunitz said.

“We don’t really know if this will be considered an act of God,” Dunitz said.

Many contracts only require full refunds if the vendor cancels, rather than the couple. That can lead to a game of chicken between the two parties, with each side pushing their coronavirus tolerance to the maximum, said James Dungan, a Chicago resident who canceled his destination wedding in Austin, Texas on March 29 and hasn’t rescheduled given the uncertainty of coronavirus quarantines.

“It was a really messy process trying to cancel because nobody wanted to cancel,” said Dungan, who noted that vendors in Austin had already been hit hard by the cancellation of South by Southwest, the annual conference and festival that was scheduled to run from March 13 to March 22 this year. Dungan said he ended up negotiating refunds on a vendor-by-vendor basis, sometimes trying to push partial refunds to full reimbursements. “I totally described it as a game of chicken to friends,” Dungan said.

Dungan, 31, and Hurst, 29, are now planning on dressing up for their wedding in full (Hurst picked up her wedding dress earlier this week) and walking over to Lake Michigan on March 29 to celebrate on their own, followed by baking and eating their own wedding cake.

“We were planning on making our own for the wedding anyway,” Hurst said. “Now we’ll just eat it at home ourselves.”

Christina Vargas, 37, and her husband, Dan Kornfeld, 47, were savvy enough to buy wedding insurance in late February after coronavirus beginning spreading wildly in China. Still, the couple found that many policies didn’t cover for pandemic and only purchased one after ensuring the language protected them. They’ve moved their May 16 wedding to December 5 in hopes they won’t need to use the insurance at all.

Unfortunately, Vargas and Kornfeld already got their May 16 date engraved into their wedding bands. Vargas said she’s already made a date with her ring-maker to add December 5 to the ring “as soon as everything clears up.”

Deciding to cancel, and sending an e-mail to the entire guest list alerting them that the wedding is off, can be emotionally excruciating. Sara Padua, 36, and her husband David Cordua, 37, looked into setting up hand sanitizer stations at their venue in Mexico City and even “had the transportation people agree to put masks in every shuttle” before making the gut-wrenching decision to cancel.

They plan to reschedule in Mexico City, in part because they’ve already paid in full and wouldn’t get a refund, said Padua, and also because they still want their dream destination wedding, even if they have to wait.

No end date in sight

Rebooking has become a game for many couples who are deciding how far out they’re comfortable rescheduling their wedding while not knowing when quarantines will lift. It’s possible some couples may need to reschedule twice if they rebook too early.

Rachel, 30, and Evan Shaffer, 36, decided to cancel their wedding at Cipriani in midtown New York City for 350 guests on March 15. They’ve coordinated with all of their vendors to reschedule for late June, realizing they may have chosen a day that’s too early for quarantines to have ended.

In the meantime, the Shaffers found a way to still get legally married and even celebrate. They gathered at Rachel’s parents’ house on Centre Island in Oyster Bay, New York and had a rabbi marry them in front of immediate family and a few cousins to make a minyan of 10 people.

And if people still don’t come together to celebrate by June 28?

“If we still can’t get married in late June at this venue, we have a lot more concerns as a country than a wedding reception,” Rachel said.
