Astarion, or; the easiest shirtsleeves - step 1: the design
I'm not going for screen accuracy, I'm going for quick, easy and Matching the Vibe. Astarion's shirt looks like this:
Tumblr media
On this I can see some details. There's actually more historical details here, if you zoom in you can actually see there's stitching on the shoulder seam, meaning shoulder pieces!
The neckslit seems to have a modernish gusset and metal grommets, all of which I'm gonna skip.
My pattern will be:
Tumblr media
Body: 135×55cm
Sleeves: 56x54cm
Cuffs: 8x20cm
Collar: 14x48cm
Shoulder pieces: 7x18 (optional)
Flounce: 15cm radius circle with 5cm opening
The shirt is not very wide, nor are the sleeves, so this will be a relatively moderate floofy shirt.
I have white linen, so that's what I'm gonna use. On to cutting!

Sometimes I think about the fact that Frenchie sets the stage of Our Flag Means Death's world by starting us off with a song about how the world of pirates is a short and violent one, but how, despite that, it's still a desirable life, because it's "short but nice".
Our heroes do not live in a muppet world of pirates expecting long, happy lives and favoring cheerful shenanigans, and it's Frenchie who reveals that to us. It's also Frenchie who says, when asked about someone returning from a raid mentally devastated, that they should "bottle it up". It's Frenchie who sees a fancy party full of bigoted wealthy whites as an opportunity to make some money in a way that humiliates the fucks who wanted to humiliate him and Oluwande. And it's Frenchie who asks if Blackbeard and Company are going to kill them when the Revenge has been occupied.
Frenchie, despite his lighthearted demeanor, is pretty damned astute. He's clever and quick to evaluate the odds, and he does it without getting grim and bitter and overcautious. He's having a blast of a good time not because he doesn't know piracy is dangerous, but because he does and he's determined to make a good time of it anyway.
In another words, he's a pretty good choice to be an anti-Izzy Hands, at least in terms of helping out a captain. I don't know what Ed will do with Frenchie in season 2 now that the sewing is done, but I imagine he took Frenchie instead of Wee John, even though Wee John has the neater hand at sewing, because Frenchie is the person he saw running a scam and getting away clean, Frenchie is the one who saw *Ed* upset and immediately validated the source of the emotion (they're such dicks about spoons!), and Frenchie knows how to be a pirate.
He just knows how to have fun with it, too. If Lucius is an emotional counterpoint to Izzy (shoulder angel vs shoulder devil), then Frenchie could very well be a piratical counterpoint to Izzy, pointing out ways that they can find the balance between the softer, gentler life Ed hoped to find with Stede, and the grim, bloody realities of a pirate's life, so it can be short but nice. Because Ed's life, after all, has not been very nice.

Project time: gambeson!
Been a while since I've liveblogged a new project, so I figured I'd take you with me on a voyage of discovery as I attempt to make a gambeson, aka arming jacket (among many other names), the quilted coat that goes underneath maille or plate armor to provide padding for comfort and protection. At its simplest, this:
Tumblr media
I've always liked the look (when they're fitted better), but never had a use for one until the other day when I finally decided to bite the bullet and start doing SCA combat, as the local guys have been trying to get me to do for literally years. First fighter practice is next weekend, let's see what I can get done before then.
(Lolol, make no mistake though, I am not as good at sewing as I am at leather, because I only ever do it under duress. It's entirely possible that what I produce today by winging it will be underwhelming and/or unusable.)
So I looked at a BUNCH of pictures online to see all the various design choices available, and decided that I wanted:
Stylishly long, hitting right below the knee
Stylishly angled, with the hem coming to points rather than being cut square across
Detachable sleeves -- one, because sleeves are hard to make fit nicely, and two, because I'm undecided whether I want wide half-length sleeves (like the picture above) or fitted full-length sleeves. If they're detachable, I can have both.
Lacing on the sides -- because that's an easier way to get the fitted look than, y'know, actually tailoring it to fit. Also means it'll still fit even if I lose or gain inches.
Hat tip to this instructable for alerting me to the existence of pre-quilted fabric at Joanns, and also for doing it with two layers of that fabric, which was reassuring because I've never worked with it before and I was worried that just sewing single layers together would make it too bulky at the seams. I didn't need darts in the chest like hers did (lol thank god, because that looks Hard to do), and I wanted a less dramatic angle on the hem.
To that end, I used the pattern from my Anders brigandine as the jumping-off point:
Tumblr media
Though I added some inches because I am no longer the skinny twink I used to be:
Tumblr media
TIME TO CUT, BECAUSE I DON'T BELIEVE IN MUSLIN MOCKUPS AND I LIKE TO LIVE DANGEROUSLY.
(This, for the record, is why my sewing projects never turn out as well as they could, but I know myself and I know that if I do a mockup, I will be Fucking Done With Sewing by the time it's over, and then never get around to making the real thing. I expect this gambeson to be a learning experiment, and then wearing it for combat will further show me what I need to adjust for the next one.)

Gosh I really hope sewing machines exist in Fable because as a person who handsews, making a full dress in a half week is bonkers and would make for very very crampy hands -

Hey qsmp official, I’m just saying, if you were to, hypothetically, release these shoes as something you can buy, I’m just saying, I’ll definitely pay 😳
I get it, it would be super expensive to produce, and probably like, even more expensive to buy. I don’t care, I’ll pay 😳😳😳

Captain Bonnet in a state of undress
aka
I FINALLY FINISHED MY FUCKING STOCKINGS!!!
they could do with a wash now, but after doing half the clocks in the wrong shade of white because I was only working on it at night after work and couldn't tell the difference in my shitty lighting, then the entire city being apparently out of white embroidery floss so I had to order it online, then getting distracted finishing a shirt in time for an outing I didn't even end up wearing it to, THEY'RE FINALLY DONE!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
made out of a cotton knit and embroidery thread, entirely hand sewn <3 I started them in... mid-October I think? it took me a while to cobble a pattern together from a few different sources, then I made a couple of mockups from scrap cotton and an old tshirt to prove it all at least fit together. then I made them out of the proper fabric, racing to just get them in one piece in time for a closet halloween costume. that led to a bunch of alterations: taking in most of the seams, bringing the hem way down, and reshaping the ankle and knee so they didn't bunch up so badly. then, of course, the aforementioned white floss shortage (seriously, wtf). but FINALLY..... THEY'RE DONE......
now i just gotta........... make the rest of the suit................. >.>

Astarion; or, the easiest floofy shirtsleeves
So, my dear sister @mysunfreckle has gotten briefly obsessed with Astarion from Baldur's Gate 3, and she showed me this:
Tumblr media
He's wearing carefully mended shirtsleeves! Now, as we all know, that is my obsession. And I haven't made a single shirt with a dramatic ruffled flounce yet!
And I recently saw Lizcapism on YouTube make a Lazy History Bounding Shirt and wanted to try it out, to show everyone who didn't want to bother with the gussets and neck pieces of the historical method. So that's what I'm gonna do today!
It'll be #floofy shirtsleeves sewalong addendum or #astarion or the easiest shirtsleeves, to block or follow this liveblog experience at your leisure.

Gambeson project: cutting out & fitting
Tumblr media
Lol, apparently past-Gabriel made this pattern EXACTLY to fit 42" wide fabric. Good job, team.
However, I realized this would put the diamonds oriented horizontally instead of vertically -- which, like vertical stripes, tends to be more aesthetically pleasing on clothes. I would have preferred them vertical, but there wasn't a way to arrange the pattern pieces going the other direction, and I decided it's subtle enough not to worry about it.
Be advised that this fabric is REALLY thin though, for something quilted. Like, so thin that I'm not sure it's going to be functional at all for actual combat. o_O
But that's okay -- the whole reason I picked this color was because I had a vague idea that it could double as the gambeson layer in Eivor's very stupid ""brigandine"" armor in AC:Valhalla, if I ever decided to make that:
Tumblr media
(Seriously, just. What is going on there.)
Anyway, I got all the pieces cut out, and then pinned them together to get an idea of the size, with straight pins along the back to mimic a seam, and safety pins along the sides to mimic lacing:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
....Put it on, and then promptly took it off and cut 3" out of the back, because I was swimming in it. But better too big than too small.
Tumblr media
Still a lot of overlap in the front, but doing better. I proceeded to change the angle of how the pieces meet at the shoulder (to make it less sharply sloped, because apparently I have more muscle there than I used to), and cut the armscythe in another half inch, so it's not tugging when I bring my arms forward.
Tumblr media
An arming jacket that fits me pretty alright!
I might use the leftover fabric to add a yoke piece over the shoulders too, if I can figure out how, because that's where most of the weight of the armor is going to be hanging, so it's the part that needs padding the most.
Another consideration, since this is aiming to be functional not just decorative, is where the strain is going to be put on the garment, and thus which parts need to be reinforced. Basically, the ties/buckles/whatever along the front, and the lacing on the sides, are going to need something stronger than just one layer of that quilted fabric to anchor them in, or they're liable to tear right out.
Since I'd been planning from the start to hem this with bias tape (....ugh) instead of folding the hems over, that gives me the option to tuck something stronger in there, like a panel of 3~4 oz veg tan, which I think will work nicely. (Bias tape also means I can keep fiddling with the exact dimensions right up until the last minute.)
TIME TO SEW! or something, idk, if you wanted to watch someone competent at sewing, you'd follow them instead of me. 🤣
......
.......fuck, I don't have blue thread.
TIME FOR THE STORE!

I was still in yesterday’s crappy mood but I don’t work until 6 today so I threw on some podcasts and made some Creatures. 100% fully winged it the way god intended - no planning except for some quick doodles and some very basic paper templates so I could get the shapes even. they’re lumpy and stupid and I might have to make one thousand more. these guys I’ll probably pawn off on coworkers or something, idk. have some mediocre photos though

Ok so latest cosplay dilemma: that pretty sparkly ribbon I put on the bottom of Zelda's skirt?
Tumblr media
It's super fragile and breaking. So I took it off, but when I first put it on a few months back I was really frustrated with my sewing machine so I. Just kinda. Hot glued it on? And the ribbon came off just fine but the hot glue not so much
Tumblr media
I could just put the new ribbon over it, but there's dilemma number 2: I hemmed the skirt a bit shorter than I want it to be, especially in comparison to the underskirt
Tumblr media
Like the white under skirt is quite long so I'll have to hem that anyways, but even so it would be nice to have the blue skirt reach around the floor. Buuut the problem there is if I unpick my hem and add the length, then the hot glue stains are quite visible.
Tumblr media
See, if you add length to the bottom then the glue will still be visible. So I've entered a double dilemma lol. If I can get the hot glue stains off or make them harder to see (paint them blue...?) Then I can add the length I want, but if I can't figure that out then I can cover them but not get the extra length.
