Okay- I can't apologize for something I'm not really sorry for. So, yeah... I wrote a character sheet, based on my own headcannons and personalities if anyone is interested in knowing. Could provide some background for some characters. Anywho, enjoy :)

Upstairs in your room, you’d finally stopped crying and had fallen asleep. Your head was on Soap’s chest, his t-shirt was wet with the tears that you’d shed during the time. Apologies had been given for it, along with apologies to your… to Kennedy, Soap just rubbed your back and listened. This wasn’t something that he could shush you for, or tell you to dry your tears to…

His phone buzzed in his pocket. Soap very carefully pulled it out and unlocked it, squinting at the paragraph sent by Price to the 141’s group chat- funny that they had one. You were excluded from this old group chat because it was created before you’d arrived on the team. Ghost must’ve just gotten off the phone with him.

Captain: Alright, I won’t call a meeting for this, because Soap is with Doc. Due to these circumstances, (Y/n) (L/n) will be staying in America until she can get her bearings. She is in no position to be back on the field any time soon. At the moment, we are in contact with someone she’s close to outside of these walls. Sergeant Gary Sanderson, better known as Roach. He’s off assignment and will arrive in America as soon as possible. Once Roach arrives, you four will return here. We have information on the Hawk that needs to be taken care of ASAP. Thank Laswell when you get back.

Soap frowned at the entirety of the text Price had sent. He understood the situation, but he didn’t want to leave you on your own. You were like a sister to him at this point. And how the fuck do you know Roach? It will be a bitter greeting once the other man arrives considering his past with Ghost. Hopefully they will set that aside for your sake.

Soap: Copy that, Captain. One question though, how does she know Roach?

He set his phone down when you started to squirm and cry again. Soap looked to see that you were still sleeping and sighed. He noticed that Alejandro and Gaz replied with ‘copy’ as well, but Gaz added his curiosity as to how you knew Roach as well. Ghost remained dry in the chain, leaving Soap to assume he wasn’t entirely thrilled on the matter.

Captain: Her force worked together with his on an assignment in 2013, shortly after she joined SF. He claims they’re good friends and I’ll leave it at that. ETA is ten hours… best tell Doc when she’s available.

Soap looked down at you, seeing the tears coming back as you cried softly in your sleep. He decided at this time that you should wake up. He tapped your shoulders lightly. “(Y/n)? C’mon, lass, wake up…”

You woke up, almost choking on new sobs that were approaching. Soap held back a silent sigh and pulled you into another hug, continuing the rubs into your back. The apologies started again, and this time Soap decided to shush you- as a way to get you to calm down. “I-I’m sorry, John.”

“‘S okay. Don’t apologize,” Soap let go of you and smiled as gently as he could. “Umm… I was supposed to tell you this when you woke up. You’re going to stay here for the time being, heal up from what happened. Price found someone to take care of you while we go back to base- they discovered information that we can’t ignore.”

Found someone? You brought up your sleeve to wipe your eyes, exhaling shakily. “W-Who?”

Soap thinned his lips, but kept his smile. “Sergeant Gary Sanderson? A friend of yours.”

Roach couldn’t remember the last time he’d been to Fort Bragg. Nine years ago he’d been on assignment with a group of the soldiers, which included you in the group. It was difficult to get along with the others, so he stuck around you. Despite being a medical sergeant, he didn’t give a shit.

“Hey- two goldfish are in a tank, one turns to the other and says: ‘Do you know how to drive this thing?’”

“Shut the fuck up so I can fix your leg, please.”

A beautiful friendship it was- or is. The only disagreement the two of you had was when it came to Shawn, Roach didn’t like him from the beginning. He didn’t seem like the type of guy to match with someone who was deployed 24/7… but he let it happen, because you’re his best friend. He did, however, say: “I told you so” because you gave him permission.

What worried him the most at the moment and made him drop his little vacation was an old issue you had. He remembers after the divorce and custody agreement that you hugged alcohol like it was your best friend. Borderline alcoholic was what you became, and he flew all the way from Europe to snap you out of it.

“You didn’t lose your daughter! You still have visitation! You think she’d want this for you?! Do you want her to see you like this? At the bottom of a bottle, sad-drunk off your ass?” He sent you to AA meetings until you’d sobered up. Now, drinks were celebratory or around friends only.

Roach wondered if the 141 was aware of the way you positioned yourself around alcohol… probably not. He fiddled with his gloves at that, not wanting to explain what he’d be doing there to her team. Something told him they wouldn’t really approve- at least Ghost wouldn’t.

“Ugh… Ghost…” Roach scrunched his nose up at the thought of seeing that man. The burn scars along his skin made him think about the last time they’d been in the same area together. But he couldn’t dwell on that- he was here for you, not him.

You played with a necklace on your neck nervously while waiting for the plane to completely land. It had a picture of you and Kennedy in it, but you wouldn’t open it… not when you’d just finished crying again.

Soap watched you, just as nervously, then leaned into Ghost: “You sure this is going to be a good idea? She looks on edge here…”

“They haven’t been in the same room since her divorce with Shawn. I don’t know how this is going to go down, Sergeant. But these are Price’s orders, so we’ll follow.” Ghost didn’t sound happy himself, but nothing could be done about it- exactly like he said.

The plane had landed and the back was slowly opening. You walked slowly towards it, stopping where the exit was. A deep exhale left your lips as a man revealed himself from the back of the plane. Once he saw you though, he dropped his bags and hurried down, engulfing you in the tightest hug when he made it to the bottom. Your tears started to flow freely again.

“I got you, (Y/n)... I got you…” Roach rubbed the side of your head, muttering other things to you to get you to calm down. While doing so, his eyes trailed over to Ghost and narrowed.

After the Storm is a post-apocalyptic sf novel by Hannah Birchwood, Key Dyson, and Raymond Roach. In this setting, the US has broken up into a bunch of smaller countries a hundred or so years after a civil war an environmental collapse, and an implied nuclear exchange. Possibly. There’s a few references to “nuke worshipping cannibals from Detroit” causing problems. One of those smaller countries…

ngl ma’am ur starship posting is starting to scare me. itsa makin me nervous. Ive only seen the movie, I thought this was the funny roach war book but I’m starting to worry the author might be the roach from a couple of these posts

Our boy Bobert H was first and foremost an incredibly earnest worldbuilding hard-sf nerd who was really bad at character and figuring out how real people would actually behave in situations, and it's a total achilles heel in Starship Troopers that pulls down anything else he wanted to do with this project. From what I understand about Heinlein (and I'm lucky to have friends that know more about him and his work than I do) he was really not as bad as he could have been, and fortunately not actually a fascist. His works have their problems for sure, but that at least was not one of them.

He was anti-racist (in a bumbling old white guy who still internalized a lot of xenophobic fearmongering anyway kind of way) and anti-sexist (in a bumbling old white guy who still internalized a lot of sexist ideas anyway kind of way) and as he got older he became very accepting re: sexuality and gender (especially considering we're talking about, like, the 60s and 70s).

(I'm told this book is a perfect example of the period in Heinlein's writing where he was so popular that editors didn't slow him down anymore and it really shows, so it's not good and I was also told I shouldn't waste my time reading it, but look at this book summary.)

If you only knew the man from reading Starship Troopers, however, you would be completely forgiven for thinking he was a total crypto-fash jackboot.

How would Arjun interact with your other COD OCs? 👀 (and maybe each of the 141 individually?)

I think I'll go with the 141 this time, cause it'll be a bit lengthy to respond;

Arjun is mostly active around Price, because they both are Captains and lead a particular unit, along with the 141. An SAS and a Para SF soldier, what can be less than that? They both surprisingly relate to each other at a personal and military level, despite the fact they both could have went through things very differently, but they're very competitive in friendly terms.

Second, we come to Soap. Arjun is very impressed by him, as when he joins the 141 and Price was absent that time, they two were the Captains leading the team. He did see a good leading spirit in him. But after knowing their previous Captain was alive, during the Gulag mission, Soap was mostly shocked, but Arjun was confused of what was going on. But after a brief moment, he understood how loyal he was to Price and appreciated his efforts. He truly had a spirit of a leader.

Third, Roach. He's pretty content around him, despite the fact he isn't a talkative person. But, he openly allowed Roach to let out his thoughts and helped the Sergeant to open up. Roach often loves talking to Arjun and speak about everything.

And lastly, Ghost. Arjun was confused at first if he keeps the mask on his face at a point of time but turns out he never removed it. After hearing about his backstory, Arjun comforted Ghost in his trauma, and also felt how awful it feels to lose someone dear (he did lose one too), and engage with each other in missions so well! They are a great duo too. You'll often see them talking about many things in the compound or anywhere.

Well, that's it! It was sure lengthy to write, but fun!

Also, obligatory thrift report. Top photo is my very reasonable haul: a Tupperware bowl with a lid that will be great for food storage + hopefully cut down on the amount of plastic wrap I use, a crop top that I'll wear as a cute workout shirt (or maybe in the summer if I get confident enough for crop tops), and a copy of Spook by Mary Roach which I read several years ago and have oft wished I had a copy of.

SEAN JONES: DIZZY SPELLZ, JAZZ ST. LOUIS, 3 FEBRUARY 2023

I first saw SEAN JONES as a member of the SF Jazz Collective here at our esteemed local club on their tour honoring Miles Davis. That was enough to ensure that I would see his own gig which featured tunes from his Live at the Bistro album recorded in that very room. As he said last night as he has before, he considers this club a home. So I also saw him as part of a celebratory Bistro All-Stars ensemble. He’s a smart improviser with a lyrical tone in the service of rich swinging tunes.

Still this show didn’t make my cut as I was planning the season, so I was lucky when friend Mike offered his ticket.

Having played Miles, here Sean Jones was playing Dizzy. The tunes included Salt Peanuts (with possibly teases of other bebop tunes from Massey Hall. Hot House?), Blue’n’Boogie (blues for St Louis), Swing Low Sweet Cadillac, and I’ll Fly Away. Jones was himself, as he was when in the Miles tribute, with no more Dizzy-isms than any trumpeter who of course has his legacy to build on. That is, there were sustained flurries of rapid notes and not too many high register blasts. He was the only horn, as he sometimes is in his ensembles, and he carried that load easily.

The rest of the core quartet swung hard. Alex Brown had power from the piano and took solos that matched his leader’s brawn. I didn’t have a clear view of Christian Dellingham on bass but he was a rock and had a rich solo. On the other hand, I could look down right on Jovan Rushton on drums who cooked but didn’t have the same kind of melodic comments that other such magicians sometimes offer.

I said core quartet because I also looked down turntablist Wendel Patrick who added to the rhythmic stew and took several solos. Patrick has a distinguished background, including as the Peabody Conservatory’s first director of hip hop, but also trained as a pianist in the European Tradition. His magic, new to me, was fun to watch. It extended a continuity to this very intentional program on the Black experience which Dizzy upheld with his dashikis and such even if he wasn’t as angry as, say, Charles Mingus or Max Roach.

The other performer and Jones’ collaborator was Brinae Ali who sang; recited poetry, angry and anguished, that evoked the pulpit, the Harlem Renaissance, Ishmael Reed and LeRoi Jones becoming Amiri Baraka, the Last Poets, and slam poetry, so probably hip hop; costume (I’ll Fly Away had a red church lady hat, gloves, and fan), and, above all, tap dance which, with Patrick’s turntables, suggested a continuity of rhythmic depth in the African American tradition.

The one possible hole was also rhythmic in that I didn’t catch a specific evocation of Chano Ponzo and Dizzy’s bebop level contribution of Afro-Cuban rhythms. But, just as his trumpet playing influences everyone, those rhythms are now a common legacy.

This was not “just” a jazz show, so it’s a reminder that jazz isn’t just jazz. As an article about Thelonious Monk I just read was titled, “Jazz is Freedom.”

brought zucc on our regular hike - she was on a mission to test my patience. did not listen to anything i said & ended up getting her off leash privileges taken away a few times. Dropped off my first box to be shipped to SF today - feeling really emotional. Have abt 4 more small boxes to drop off of my belongings before i’m down to just clothes & shoes. down to 58 days in NY. somedays i’m excited to get out of my rat/ roach infested apt. other days i’m sad to be leaving my first NY apt

went to an indie (ish) show @ purgatory w sav tonight. During the set she put my arm around her and it made me really happy. This set is a combination of the Cash Cows, Horsin' Around, Got Your Goat, Counting Sheep, The Whole Hog, Counting Your Chickens, and Duck Duck Goose sets. All of their bonus content such as Highland Cattle, Unicorns, Animated Horse Wings, and Halla have all also been updated and included. 

Read below for what’s new; additionally a information and use doc has been included in the .rar to detail everything needed to be known about the animals including use instructions, products, feeding, etc. as it is otherwise just a giant wall of text on tumblr.

New Trait and Trait Support

Farmhand - This trait is meant to help sims do the jobs around the farm that need doing such as filling troughs and raking dung. 

Other items also make use of various Traits made by others, detailed in the sections that follow.

Troughs Consolidated

Now any animal can use 1 of 4 Troughs (High,Low, BBNiche, or Bathtub). Low Trough spawns slop, High/Bathtub Trough spawns Hay, BBNiche spawns Meat. All of these also spawn water.

Trait Support; Animal Lover, farmhand and Servant trait autonomously fill troughs without a tool

Trait Support; Royals, Nobility and Gentry need an inventory tool to fill troughs or scoop poop

Poultry Consolidated/Updated

Chicken/Duck/Geese no longer have individual coops. A base coop will use Easy Lot Check to see if there are any female fowl on the lot and offer eggs. Much like the Rabbit Hutch, the coops act as the chicken feeding station itself. If male fowl are present on the lot, Eggs for Hatching of the appropriate species of birds will appear.

Poultry Market Vendor added. Will spawn one random female per purchase, or the selected male.

All female fowl are now huntable/edible for pets.

Female birds have a 5% chance every 24 hours to lay eggs in a place other than a coop/nesting box.

-Poultry Spawners; will spawn any female bird of their respective species.

Livestock Dung

Trait Support; Servants and neat sims automatically clean dung

Trait Support; Eco-friendly, farmhand and green thumb sims automatically collect poop

If sim has a "clean poop trait" and a "collect poop" trait, the collect poop trait takes priority (eco-friendly servants collect autonomously, for example)

Livestock Animals

All share the new troughs.

Goats may now also eat slop from the low trough.

New Rooting Spot for hogs. Hogs may also use the Gone Fishin' Bait Rock for a food source.
