Fun facts about the first draft of Rogue One that haunt me
1) Jyn was a rebel commander with the callsign Rogue Leader (or Rogue One). This was where the film's title came from, since in this draft the final mission to Scarif was supported by the Rebel Alliance instead of being a "rogue one".
2) Cassian was an Imperial double agent working for Krennic and feeding the Empire all of Jyn's movements before having a change of heart after seeing a genocide that he was basically responsible for. Cassian also wasn't his name in this draft (it was probably Willix Cree).
3) The film opened with a mission to Eadu to rescue Galen/find out what he'd been building (which became the second act of the final film). In this first draft, the Rebel Alliance weren't responsible for the bombs that killed Galen - Saw Gerrera was.
4) Writer Gary Whitta had to ask John Knoll (writer of the film's original pitch and treatment) if K2SO's description as a black protocol droid meant he was painted black or "Sam Jackson Black".
5) Jyn and (not) Cassian didn't die on Scarif - they escaped on Admiral Raddus's ship, and beamed the plans ship to ship to Princess Leia. Raddus's ship was then blasted into little pieces by the empire, but Jyn and Cassian survived in an escape pod.
6) The name Scarif came from a Starbucks barista's misspelling of director Gareth Edwards's name. (He said "it's Gareth" and got a cup that said Scaref)
7) Jyn and Cassian possibly got married at the end of the film (they had "much more" of a romantic subplot, but the whole "first draft ended in a wedding" thing was an off-handed remark from Chris Weitz, who wrote the drafts after Whitta, and didn't specify whose wedding it was)
8) some ideas that were thrown around but never made it into a draft were Jyn's mother being a Jedi who'd escaped Order 66, Jyn having to barter with a Hutt on its barge for information and Eadu having a native species of aliens called Eaduites who were being poisoned by industrial runoff from the Weapons Factory.
Anyway I did a full breakdown of this draft and the following Chris Weitz drafts for the pod, give it a listen I suck at promo I just need more people to know there was a draft of this movie where Jyn had to look Cassian in the eye and be like "yo you're personally responsible for the destruction of that moon and the genocide of its people and almost killed me in the process" and he had to be like "yeah my bad."

Starkiller confused: Why should I? I look like myself.
Starkiller: So I'm not an only child?
Luke&Leia: Nope.
Starkiller: Okay time out. I as Vader's adopted son lived with him while his biological children were adopted?
Leia: It's complicated.
Luke: I lived with my uncle and aunt.
Starkiller still not understanding how he not met them sooner: Then I'm either blind or there are ghosts on this ship.

agree with you when it comes to misogyny in the fandom (and in general lol) and shipping etc and I wanted to dump this here because it's been bugging me and I have nobody to talk to about it irl that hasn't heard me muttering about it before but why do people seem so anti-romance in general? I see 'Star Wars doesn't need romance or a love story' all the time and I can't help but feel like it falls into the misogyny category a little because romance is seen as something inherently feminine or 'for the girls' ig so people think it's an unnecessary addition to a plot but it can actually affect a character and how they act/think etc so much whether that's for good or bad, hope that makes sense?
obviously not every character needs a great romantic love and Din-doesn't-need-or-want-love enjoyers do your thing but even in the first season he clearly considers Omera and seems open to the idea at least, so people being against Bo just doesn't make sense to me? has she done bad things? well yeah but what character hasn't in Star Wars? and even if it's not Bo I still see it thrown around that Star Wars doesn't need a love story but why? what's wrong with romantic love? there are other shows that they're making/have made that yeah shoehorning in a romance would've made no sense (i.e. Kenobi, I mean I've not watched it but I can't imagine a love story working in that) but the Mandalorian hasn't set itself up to be a show like that?
I hope this has made sense but I basically wanted to air that out and it just came to me reading your answers to other questions that it's probably at least a little misogyny that plays a part in that anti-romance feeling going around or that makes sense in my head anyway
(also Jyn and Cassian soulmates truther here so if people wanna beef about them pls consider not doing that or I'll cry, they're basically built to be perfect for each other so???)
i wanted to publish this before tonight's episode (i just woke up for work 😂).
i agree. it's always when there is some prospect of romance for these kinds of female characters that the "we don't need romance" brigade comes out. like, there's nothing inherently wrong with romance nor is there anything wrong with not wanting romance. it's preference.
but c'mon it's not star wars even has a lot of it on screen for major characters. at least healthy relationships or ones that don't end in untimely death.
i can name the actual romances on one hand probably and further discussion is going under a read more out of sake for length and because some minor spoilers for clone wars and rebels.
padme amidala and anakin skywalker ends in tragedy, the eradication of the jedi order and the fall of the republic. anakin turns into darth vader.
hera syndulla and kanan jarrus again ends in tragedy. he sacrifices himself to save hera, sabine and ezra.
bail and breha oranga perish in the destruction of alderaan.
obi-wan kenobi and satine kryze never officially get together as she's dutchess of mandalore and he's a jedi knight. she's murdered by maul to spite him.
vel sartha and cinta kaz external circumstances and cinta's devotion to The Cause of the Rebellion put them on shaky ground.
han solo and leia organa are depicted as a kind of volatile relationship and we never actually really see them be a couple on screen besides some crumbs. by the sequels they are separated.
cassian andor and jyn erso dead before they could really have a relationship.
galen and lyra erso ends in lyra being murdered in front of galen.
owen and beru lars seem to be a relatively normal married couple but than they get brutally murdered by the empire so.
so where's the over abundance of romantic relationships in star wars?
i'd like one couple in star wars that doesn't end in a tragic demise or a "casualties: everyone in the local vicinity" type of scenario.
besides a "strong female character" doesn't have be devoid of romance.
allison argent still says it best "can't i be strong and go to prom?"

Ask game: AU where Anakin didn't become Vader and Padme didn't die, please!
Well, I could make this an Everything Goes Great AU, but that's a bit too easy. Instead, let's make some chaos!
Instead of running to save Palpatine, Anakin just...waits patiently in the Council Chambers for Mace to return.
Unfortunately, Mace loses his duel and is presumed dead, and Palpatine, seeing Anakin hasn't joined him, Executes Order 66 anyway. So Anakin soon finds the entire Jedi Temple under attack while he's the highest ranking Jedi on duty. He fights the clones and helps several of them escape, even flying his ship inside the temple like he always wanted! Eventually he's forced to flee with any other Jedi he saved.
Palpatine doesn't tell anyone this and instead reports Anakin Skywalker was killed. Obi-Wan, Bail, Padme, and Yoda get to work laying the groundwork for the Rebel Alliance. They don't have an opportunity to attack Sidious directly, so they bide their time. When the twins are born, Padme keeps Leia but has Obi-Wan take Luke to make it harder for the Emperor to sense their power.
Anakin meanwhile has joined the Separatists with Rex and Ahsoka (after "taking care of" Nute Gunray and the others), and is leading their armies against the clones, along with getting them to raise actual armies to fight the Imperials, while Sidious let's Darth Maul become his new apprentice.
Obi-Wan and Yoda join Anakin on the Separatist's side, while Padme and Bail set up the Alliance to Restore the Republic. Yoda does away with the no family rule and makes Anakin a master. The other Jedi soon flock to them to rebuild the Order.
Anakin also picks up Galen Marek at some point and makes him his new Padawan.
Anakin raises Luke with Obi-Wan and Ahsoka, while Padme raises Leia. However, the family is in constant touch with each other.
Oh and Han Solo and Chewbacca eventually join up. Rex thought Han was a good shot and recruited him, then Han saved Chewbacca from the Imperials.
Eventually they kill Palpatine and restore the Republic. Anakin's just disappointed he couldn't prove that he totally could've nailed that two meter exhaust port on that super weapon the Imperials were cooking up, regardless of how "impossible" it was!

Rebelcaptain fic: The Burden of the Living
Jyn is always grieving.
From the moment she wakes up in the Alliance Med Bay, fleeing Yavin 4, she grieves.
She grieves for her mother, for Saw, for Galen, for Chirrut and Baze and all the large group of soldiers who followed her into battle on Scarif and never made it out alive.
She grieves for the city of NiJedha.
She grieves for herself.
Jyn Erso should have died on Scarif. She knows that. It gnaws at her bones and it breaks across her skin, whispers in her soul, the knowledge that she shouldn’t be alive.
And then the nurse tells her why they’re on a ship in the middle of space, why they are fleeing.
To the nurse, it’s no big news. Jyn has been out for three weeks, and in that time shock has returned to the everyday simmering rage that any rebel carries with her.
But Jyn listens. She listens to the news of who had lived and died on Scarif, as far as the nurse is aware. She listens to the news of the losses during the battle of Yavin. She nods with mute incomprehension that the nurse takes as acceptance.
“Oh,” the other woman throws over her head, like she’s sharing last minute gossip before leaving. “Princess Leia is going to want to talk to you. Probably. Alderaan was destroyed by the Death Star, so she’s been barking orders around here since we boarded.”
Jyn doesn’t see her go.
The white walls, the beeping machines, the quiet patients in medbay blur and then wink out, the news hitting her like a force of shock and grief so overwhelming the world simply vanishes before her eyes.
Alderaan.
A whole planet full of people. Millions of people. Billions. They’d only been aiding the rebellion in secret, as far as Jyn knew, so the people there hadn’t even been participating in the war.
They hadn’t asked for any of this.
They hadn’t asked for her father’s monster to destroy their world. To incinerate them. To whisk their lives away as if they were nothing.
She doesn’t know if she’s stopped breathing, if she’d started trembling. But when Cassian’s hands land on her upper arms, they are burning hot through her tunic.
When he gently shakes her, the first breath that does escape her is a laugh, cold and trembling and a single step away from sobbing heartbreak.
“Jyn.”
He pushes her up, straight, forcing her to look at him, to see the way his hair flies through the air with the force of his own movement.
Somewhere behind him she can hear someone exclaim that he shouldn’t be running in his condition, but Jyn trembles in his hands and the world she can comprehend narrows into the man in front of her.
He doesn’t smile. There’s no welcome back, no you’re awake, no I’m so glad you’re alive. Instead his eyes are deep and dark with his own grief. Instead he reaches up and touches the pad of his thumb to the skin below her eye.
“What’s wrong?”
As if they’d never been separated in the first place.
They’re all dead, she wants to say.
But Jyn opens her mouth and finds she has no voice to speak.
Her throat closes excruciatingly.
And Jyn recoils, closes her eyes, pulling back to swallow the pain.
It hurts. It burns all over, like a seer of fire, the knowledge, the pain of what she had failed to stop. Failed to even witness. It’s a fire in her heart, in her throat, and in her eyes.
And when she finally throws them open again to look at Cassian, tears fall in liberated streams down her eyes, turning the world to a blur of colour and light, stealing Cassian from her once more time.
“Cassian,” she nearly chokes. She grasps for his hands, for the evidence of his warm existence at her side, life she greedily needs but does not deserve. Comfort, she receives and clings to. “Rogue One.”
His voice is quiet when he answers her, soothing but understanding. And underneath she feels his despair and loss answer her own. “I know.”
“Yavin.”
His fingers escape her grasp, only to climb up her wrists in order to settle more firmly to hold her still, hold her in place. Begging her not to flee.
“I know.”
Jyn blinks away the tears, fights the grief if only to be able to see him. She blinks the water away as best she can, and he comes into focus, his hair dishevelled, his body still bound, his expression cut open with grief.
She looks beyond him to Bodhi, standing silently by their side, bandages covering his neck and climbing under his own tunic to protect more wounds as they heal. His hair is cut short and his eyes are wide with grief.
Beside him stands a set of crutches not his own.
“Alderaan,” she whispers.
Neither man answer her in words, but she can see the confirmation on their faces.
Her hands, the world swims.
Cassian pulls her forwards into his arms, and at the collision with warmth and life, as sob escapes her. Followed by another and another. Until she’s crying like a child, grasping for air, the despair too great to keep quiet.
Her fingers claw at his shirt, grasping purchase, and she holds on for dear life, tears burning from her eyes in never-ending streams.
Somewhere far away, Bodhi climbs onto the bed as well, and rests his weight against her also. And Jyn, for the first time in as long as she can remember, lets the emotion overwhelm her, knowing and trusting that she is safe in the arms of home and family.

You know... Bix x Melshi is something I never considered before. 👀 Hahaha, and as a multi shipper I'll add it to my list of rare pairs, next to Bix x Brasso.
P.S.: Can you recommend me any other SW rare pairs to consider? 👀
hmm my ultimate one is Mon/Draven, I just love the potential of that dynamic. I've also seen the OT3 version of them with Merrick.
Then there's Saw/Luthen or Vel/Kleya, though I'm sure you've seen those before. I also saw Mon/Kleya, oh and Mon/Lyra once in a ship bingo and tbh, obsessed with that idea. Mon is just very shippable I think.
I'm very fond of Bodhi/Luke too, and some other RO/OT pairings could be Cass/Leia and Jyn/Leia. I know Han/Jyn and Luke/Jyn also exists, though I'm personally not a fan of either, but hey, you do you! Maybe Cassian/Han? I've also seen Cassian/Draven before.
There's also maybe Lyra/Saw (you could throw in Galen for an OT3). Jyn/Cinta... Kleya/Leia? Their names kinda make it weird but I kinda dig it.
And as a bonus, two absolute wild cards that I just came up with on the spot: Lyra/Draven and Brasso/Jyn.

[ riz ahmed, cis man, he/him. ] ✧･ﾟ is that [ bodhi rook ] who just stumbled into town? rumour has it that they’re the [ thirty-five ] year old originally hailing from [ star wars ]. if they had to choose a side they would consider themself [ good ]. i’ve also heard that they’re [ adaptable ] but [ anxious ] and have [ one ] child. i could almost swear i heard [ men on the moon - chelsea cutler ] playing when they appeared. tw: pregnancy mention, death
bodhi was born to a single mother, the two doing what they could to get by on jedha. however, even if times were tough, bodhi still found ways to get into trouble – namely betting illegally and being reckless with a speeder. he was quite clumsy and bad on his luck, never allowed to work with knives as a result of that clumsiness.
despite all of this, he had dreams of being a starfighter pilot. it was obvious he had a passion for piloting, but the passion didn’t match his skill level. he never qualified for the starfighter program after he enlisted, forced to take on the role of transporting cargo for the empire instead. it wasn’t something he was happy about, but he was at least thankful that he was off jedha and flying anything at all. it wasn’t a glamorous job, but he did get to see different worlds and casually learn about the empire’s secrets – not that he thought he would need to use that knowledge any time soon.
during this time, he met a fellow coworker that he slowly fell for. the two came from similar backgrounds and understood each other more than anyone else. eventually, they did enter a relationship together and were rather stable. they were together for a year before everything started to strain and shift. there was a sudden change in bodhi’s partner as she grew more irritable and dreamt of living somewhere more permanent. she mentioned that they needed to plan for the future, and that neither of them would be happy working on freight ships forever. and though he tried to be understanding, she wouldn’t say why she suddenly wanted to change their lives nor was he able to find a job that took care of them better than their current.
unable to find a solution and bodhi kept in the dark about her pregnancy, his partner ended things quickly and left their shared workspace. he was absolutely heartbroken and confused, resigning himself to a life of unhappy monotony working for the empire. fate, however, had a different plan for bodhi when galen erso approached him to deliver a message to the resistance. with nothing really holding him back and having a deep sense of doing what was right, bodhi agreed and defected.
bodhi ended up meeting the small, makeshift group that would deliver the plans of the deathstar to the resistance – the very thing that changed the course of the galaxy forever. bodhi never thought he would find himself in such a situation, but there wasn’t any turning back for him. he gave his life for the future of the galaxy, perishing with the others as the planet was destroyed and the message was sent to leia organa’s ship.
bodhi never met his child nor did he ever knew they existed. he’d always wanted a family one day, but never had the chance. he would want to be the best father he could be. coming to town, he doesn’t remember getting his mission from galen erso. he remembers his break up with his partner and how everything was falling apart for him.

Rebels. Galen touched down at the on Calamari cruiser, one of the last to get off Yavin IV, his ship full of survivors who escaped. The Death Star was destroyed and already was that swelling recruits but the Empire was coming hard. and they still had to deal with the grief of Alderaan and without Bail Organa the tri-pact of Bel Ibis and Mon Mothma was tense to say the least.
Yet he was stopped and considered her beautiful face, looking into those brown eyes and he was stopped/ Still silent and looking for her in the force the man faltered, she always made him falter, “ Yes.” He stepped closer and clutched her arm.

Rogue One - C Tier
Next is Rogue one, the first independent star wars movie. I gave this one a C tier rating because although it is a descent movie I think it depends on a lot of context and the end of the main characters is a bit disappointing. I would agree with most people that the premise of the movie is very cool! And that the very end with Darth Vader on Leia's ship aligning fully with the beginning of a new hope is fabulously well done, but apart from that I find the story lacking and the main characters lack pizzazz.
Cassian Andor is not very interesting without the TV show about him that came out 6 years after, not very appealing overall. And Jyn Erso picked up too much from saw Guerrera and is mostly annoying to me, she does not feel like a main character, she seems to just be there. The side characters were the more entertaining people however, the weird blind monk and his friend, the rebels of Saw, the sassy droid, even Galen! But then again, without having seen rebels or the clone wars series, then, Saw might feel as annoying as she is I admit. He is a more complex character then he might seem, he lost a lot and has good reasons to be as angry as he is; most of the rebels do.
The best part in my opinion is the sassy attitude of K2-SO and his comedic relief from the "taking no shit" voice. Overall I think however that it's an over-rated favorite : it's not bad but not great either.

despite all of this, he had dreams of being a starfighter pilot. it was obvious he had a passion for piloting, but the passion didn’t match his skill level. he never qualified for the starfighter program after he enlisted, forced to take on the role of transporting cargo for the empire instead. it wasn’t something he was happy about, but he was at least thankful that he was off jedha and flying anything at all. it wasn’t a glamorous job, but he did get to see different worlds and casually learn about the empire’s secrets – not that he thought he would need to use that knowledge any time soon.
during this time, he met a fellow coworker that he slowly fell for. the two came from similar backgrounds and understood each other more than anyone else. eventually, they did enter a relationship together and were rather stable. they were together for a year before everything started to strain and shift. there was a sudden change in bodhi’s partner as she grew more irritable and dreamt of living somewhere more permanent. she mentioned that they needed to plan for the future, and that neither of them would be happy working on freight ships forever. and though he tried to be understanding, she wouldn’t say why she suddenly wanted to change their lives nor was he able to find a job that took care of them better than their current.
unable to find a solution and bodhi kept in the dark about her pregnancy, his partner ended things quickly and left their shared workspace. he was absolutely heartbroken and confused, resigning himself to a life of unhappy monotony working for the empire. fate, however, had a different plan for bodhi when galen erso approached him to deliver a message to the resistance. with nothing really holding him back and having a deep sense of doing what was right, bodhi agreed and defected.
bodhi ended up meeting the small, makeshift group that would deliver the plans of the deathstar to the resistance – the very thing that changed the course of the galaxy forever. bodhi never thought he would find himself in such a situation, but there wasn’t any turning back for him. he gave his life for the future of the galaxy, perishing with the others as the planet was destroyed and the message was sent to leia organa’s ship.
bodhi never met his child nor did he ever knew they existed. he’d always wanted a family one day, but never had the chance. he would want to be the best father he could be. coming to town, he doesn’t remember getting his mission from galen erso. he remembers his break up with his partner and how everything was falling apart for him.

"Jedi were known for their devotion, to the cause and the order. The Jedi order was no more, and the cause... well, they'd lost their cause a long time ago, long before he was even aware of what it truly meant to be a Jedi. But the devotion remained, repurposed."
This is not only the best line I've written in a WHILE, but also a good way to summarize the way I write my force sensitive muses when they happen to be in romantic or very close platonic relationships with someone else. It varies if the muse falls more to the light side or dark side of the force. Light side (Cal in most of his verses, Luke, Quinlan in most of his verses, Voe) are absolutely devoted to their partners/friends, while dark side (Merrin, Cal in his Inquisitor verse, Quinlan in his verse where he's still Enigma) are possessive over their partners/friends; Galen, Leia and Feral fall somewhere in the middle, a little obsessive maybe, definitely territorial.
Just something to keep in mind for those who want to ship with them.
