What's really funny is that this person is attacking an early access creator for early access, for something they actually took time to make instead of going after paywall creators who are literally fucking stealing models and doing the bare minumum. Make it make sense? The fucking double standards of this community man. Like...if early access creators get treated like this, it's no freaking wonder folks like leaf-motif and sixam went to paywalling. Why do the right thing and follow all the rules only to end up with your work stolen, redistributed, or mocked by people who don't understand the work you put in it? [This is by no means me excusing these people from making the choice to do the wrong thing, but I'm just saying...like if a community abuses people long enough it won't take much for them to consider abusing that community back...] Like, the community can't be all "fuck paywallers" while treating the free and early access creators like machines who are just here to crank out cc for us to use and abuse. Like, that's not what these people are for. They are part of our community, and are important to support and uplift. Even if you cannot monetarily support these folks due to your situation, you can still send them a kind word, reblog their posts, share about them on social media, etc. I just am kinda sick of the cycles of abuse I'm seeing in the community tbh. Like, EA convincing us that the game isn't playable without all this extra money and DLC and addons, which then makes it easier for paywalling creators to exploit that pavlovian-training and convince people that it's the same for CC. And those creators trying to justify it as well by saying "Well you're not giving your money to a money hungry corperation and instead giving it to a small creator!" as if they aren't using the same techniques the corperation is? And then other people seeing how easy it is to milk the CC money cow and deciding the fuck the community and just go straight to putting all of their content on patreon with paywalls. Just from playing other games recently with healthier modding communities it just shows the absolute disconnect with reality. So what can we do from here? I don't know but I think some simple steps would be: 1) Stop abusing and treating early access creators like trash. Don't share their shit before early access is over, don't complain about the wait times, and actually appreicate they're making things for you and doing the right thing. 2) Realize that your game is your game, and you don't have to compare yourself to or compete with fucking anyone. At the end of the day, in 10 years it's not going to matter that you had a piece of CC that almost nobody else had because it was ~*~exclusive~*~ or that you had a perfectly blender rendered story on your simstagram. But what is going to matter is your mental health, which is gonna take a toll if you start engaging in the toxic behavior of comparing yourself to others or competing with others because you think they "play the game" better than you, causing you to buy things you don't need from people set on abusing the community. Nobody plays the game better than you because we each play the game differently. 3) Surround yourself with people and creators who emphasize community over content. Be around creators who care about the community and give back to it and are decent humans vs people who are cranking out "content" and trying to be a "brand". Because again, in 10 years you might not even be playing the sims 4 anymore, but you might still have friends from the community that you made. I don't actively play the sims anymore but I still have sims 4 friends who check up on me and ask how I'm doing. And I suspect I'll have many of them as friends for years to come.

4) Don't be afraid to call a spade a spade and highlight people who aren't acting in the best interest of the community. Like, I get that people enjoy my blog because I do this and that people have loved following @littleblackbooksims for that reason too, but like, if we ALL took part a little bit in this, then perhaps I and others wouldn't have to shout so loud. Because IDK about you but I'd sure as heck love to not have to post so much about abusive paywallers and be able to post more turtle pictures. Anyway, I hope that's enough "thoughts" for ya on this ask.

Random midnight Kokoro Mistume thoughts cuz I just watched stream recordings of SDRA2 and she’s on my mind again.

I saw someone claim that apparently LINUJ said if Kokoro had a friend when she was younger, she wouldn’t have gone down the path she did? I can’t find a verifiable source... but it actually kind of affirms my view on the character. Specifically, that she on some level felt like she was broken and a reject from society, something wrong that needed to be fixed. If someone came to accept her for who she was, then maybe her curiosity over emotions wouldn’t become the destructive obsession it did.

I also saw a suggestion that maybe the Tragedy was what changed her, but... nope, timeline doesn’t match up. She would’ve had Mikako nearly two decades before the tragedy, meaning any concerns she had about ethics were long gone by the time of SDRA2. I still wonder what made her give up said concerns though. I do think there’s some merit to the idea that if she lived and her peers were her “classmates” something akin to the childhood friend idea may have happened, because she admitted her ambitions to Sora in her free time events but showed those hesitations. Being around people who could be a positive influence but still accept her for how she was could have helped her.

Somehow didn’t discuss the relationship with Emma even though it’s a big thing with her. That might be because even with anything, the way Emma interacted with Kokoro kinda made me uncomfortable, like as an Autistic person I’ve known instances of people who were like Emma who were all “aww you just need to smile and hang out with us uwu” to me. It’s very annoying, and I mean, Kokoro is visibly annoyed by it too (I think at the party before Yuri died she’s outright like “stop treating me like a fucking child” lol, oh hey infantilisation, another common Autistic experience :v), only actually choosing to open up to Emma when she sees her TRUE feelings and isn’t acting painfully neurotypical UH I MEAN putting on the overly cheery fake personality to spy on her. We see Kokoro actually open to the true Emma and not the fake persona she puts up. In Kokoro’s dislikes she actually has people who mask/conceal their emotions listed, so Emma acting how she did probably got on her nerves even more due to this. Basically, she wanted Emma to stop fucking around and be honest with her if she really was interested in her. And like, despite Emma primarily trying to spy on Kokoro, it is hinted that she did genuinely like her.

Also, there’s the whole thing where Emma’s dad was abusive, and Kokoro was an awful absuive mother herself. I don’t think Emma knew that since I think the Voids only knew the bare minumum/what was absolutely necessary for the game, but there is a weirdly poetic subtext you could gleam from that. Kokoro wasn’t just killed by her own “child”, but another child of an abusive parent. I guess I feel like if Emma properly knew this, her disdain for Kokoro would be way more obvious after the second trial (and okay you could argue there’s an issue of not spoiling things for the amnesiacs because plot, but still). Still, the fact she got pissed off at her and killed her is kinda interesting as said. Do I think they could’ve been friends? Maybe, but probably not in the way I see a lot of people imagining them in fandom (and shipping them), Emma I think needs to accept that if she wants Kokoro to like her then she needs to meet her on her level, even if that includes emotional vulnerability. Kokoro on the other hand would probably need to be more sensitive and respect Emma’s boundaries. But eh, I hate being a cop in fandom, we have too much of that shit, so I’m not gonna complain to people for not following my specific read on characters.

The “One” Divided Into “Two”

First of all:

Hello! I just want to say that I love your RWBY metas! So I'm wondering, have you ever done metas about Emerald and Mercury?

Thank you! And yes, I have written a little bit about Mercury and Emerald here. I would also recommend this wonderful meta by @hamliet because it has an interesting Mercury theory in it.

Now. this answer is gonna mix some analysis with speculation because Emerald and Mercury’s story must still enter its climax. Once it does and we are given a specific interpretative key I will be happy to write more metas on them!

I’ll start with this:

Those two are so out of place in Salem's faction and the last look they share made me doubt that Mercury is rotten to the core and more of a kid who didnt know what he's in for. Since Em has switched sides, is it possible that Merc might follow? I really like him, so I'm hoping that he won't go down like Watts.

In my opinion, yes and here is why.

CHILDREN LOST IN A NARRATIVE

1) Emerald and Mercury have been child-coded since their first appearance:

Roman: Oh, look! She sent the kids again! This is turning out just like the divorce!

2) Both have received a save the cat moment early on:

Emerald: It's almost sad.

Mercury: Emerald, get up, we need to go. (...) Emerald!

Both child-coding and save the cat moments are often used to make characters more sympathetic and this applies to both Emerald and Mercury, even more so than Cinder.

This is why, for example, the major death they are directly involved in:

turns out to be a temporary one.

As a side note, I like thinking of Emerald and Mercury as the Cat and the Fox in Penny’s story since they act as false friends to the main cast, betray them and cause Penny’s first death. Moreover, in the novel, both characters end up suffering consequences for their life-styles. The two murder kids are the same:

At the same time, details about Emerald and Mercury’s backgrounds and motivations are given to the viewers pretty early on:

We are shown Cinder recruiting both and these scenes clearly paint them as two vulnerable kids that get manipulated and groomed:

Raven: Two children you’ve tricked into following you.

Emerald is presented as a scaredy cat and Cinder wins her over by promising the bare minumum aka some security and basic care.

Mercury is given even less aka a narrative to keep himself together:

Cinder: And you're his son. We saw your fight from the treeline. He's taught you well.

Mercury: Guess so.

Cinder: What's your name?

Mercury: Mercury.

Cinder: Mercury... Tell me, are you anything like your father?

Mercury: All my life, my father trained me to be a killer, an assassin like him. And then moments after I killed him, you two showed up looking for someone with my exact skills. Just felt like it was meant to be.

Cinder praises his abilities and frames his trauma as something that makes him strong, not broken. And Mercury has completely embraced this narrative since then.

In short, Emerald and Mercury are framed as two kids lost in an illusory narrative Cinder has crafted. That said, they are also characters in a proper narrative and they are given sympathetic backgrounds and positive qualities that hint they can be better than they currently are.

In particular, Emerald should overcome her emotional dependence on others to make the right thing:

In both volume 3 and volume 8 she is shown the destruction of a city. However, the first time she puts distance between herself and others’ pain, as symbolically conveyed by her looking from above. In volume 8, though, she is shown the same pain up close and she can’t ignore it anymore. This is why the others drag Emerald towards the people crying and light invades the screen when she finally meets the sheltered crew. She is forced to face an uncomfortable truth she wants to ignore.

Mercury should instead let himself depend on others more. He should open up to others and fight for his one positive bond:

Mercury: Back off, freak.

Which leads us to:

What do you like most about Emerald and Mercury's relationship and bond as it is explored in RWBY?

EMERCURY: COMPLEMENTARITY

Emerald and Mercury’s bond being a key one is conveyed both symbolically and in terms of their respective abilities.

When it comes to their abilities, I have written about it in the meta linked above:

In short, Emerald mostly relies on her semblance, while Mercury mostly relies on his legs and fighting prowess.

This detail adds to the idea that Emerald and Mercury have been acting as a unit and have been complementing each other. Emerald acts as the “soul” and Mercury as the “body”.

The soul is one’s personal essence (like the semblance). It is where (once again) wishes reside. The body is what protects the soul and is animated by instincts and self-survival.

They complement each other. This complementarity is shown in Emerald and Mercury’s fights.

In the Vytal festival, Mercury takes on both Coco and Yatsuhashi for a short while, so that Emerald can size her chance to fight Coco at her own terms (and she wins by using her semblance).

In the Battle of Heaven, Emerald uses her semblance to help Mercury fight and, in a sense, she compensates for his lack of one:

The human soul is about wishes, but also duties:

Penny: I feel like I wish I could do both the things I need to do and the things I want to do. Is that normal?

One must accept their feelings, but also struggle with them:

Winter: But yes Penny, we must still acknowledge our personal feelings, wrestle with them. It ensures us that we’re on the right path. It’s what makes us human.

And must do the right thing out of their own free will:

Winter: Penny. The general is making hard choices so we don’t have to.

This is Emerald’s personal struggle. She must let go of her feelings for Cinder and fight her own fear in order to do the right thing.

The human body lets people feel both others’ warmth:

And others’ cruelty:

However, Mercury refuses to feel both. He refuses to truly process his own trauma and pushes his feelings of care for Emerald away:

As far as their symbolism goes, they are linked in at least three different ways.

1) One of the attributes of the Roman god Mercury is that he is the protector of thieves and Emerald’s surname capitalized means thief. What is more:

Mercury: Ooh, Emerald! Master thief! Please don't take my money! I barely have enough to get by!

2) Mercury/Hermes is also the god of alchemy and the one who wrote the Emerald Tablet aka a tablet with the truth of alchemy on it. You, @hamliet​, have written a meta on it, so I won’t add more.

3) According to at least some traditions, emerald is the gemstone associated with the planet Mercury.

So, it is clear the two characters are meant to be important in each other’s arcs.

Let’s now look at Emerald and Mercury’s bond, as it is explored through their interactions.

Mercury clearly cares about Emerald and gets along well with her. She is the only person he shows vulnerability to.

This is what their scene in Lost is about:

Emerald: Why did you come with us, the night Cinder and I found you?

Mercury: Why are you asking--

Emerald: Just answer the question.

Emerald is trying to open herself up and wants Mercury to open up too. This is why she gets annoyed when Mercury gives her a superficial answer. Still, in that conversation, Mercury is genuinelly trying to answer Emerald’s feelings:

Mercury: I'm sorry you didn't have a mommy that loved you, but I had a father who hated me! He never went easy on me! Every day of training was a beating. And when I unlocked my Semblance, he stole it with his! "This is a crutch!" "This makes you weak!" He told me I could have it back when I was strong. So I got strong, but I never got it back! I've had to work harder than anyone to get where I am. You may not like it here without Cinder, but I think I'm right where I'm supposed to be!

Here, Mercury is telling Emerald details of his past he would not be sharing if he did not trust her. He can’t let himself be completely vulnerable, though, so he discloses them by lashing out at Emerald. He mixes violence with authentic vulnerability and also with care:

Mercury: Cinder doesn't care about you! She doesn't care about either of us!

He has seen how self-destructive Emerald can get when it comes to Cinder:

And he is trying to have Emerald move on from her obsession.

However, Mercury’s small steps towards opening up and caring for another person are constantly challenged:

Tyrian: Oh yes, the world is mean, and I'm a big, bad man now just like the others.

Mercury: How long have you been standing there?!

The moment he opens up to Emerald, Tyrian appears to threathen and mock him.

Mercury’s positive development lies in accepting his own feelings of pain and in sharing them with others, so that he can be helped. However, the environment he is in goes in the way of it:

Emerald: Mercury, I wanted to...

Here, Emerald is trying to either apologize to Mercury for their fight or to at least check out on him. Still, Mercury is not listening to her because he is too frightened by what Salem is doing.

Mercury’s current struggle is conveyed in a nutshell by the glance he gives to his left in Midnight:

Is he looking at Emerald out of concern?

Or at Salem out of caution?

It is not clear. Still, what is sure is that Mercury should focus on Emerald, but Salem goes in the way. He deep down wants to care about others, but he is too scared to do so:

Tyrian: All you ever learned was pain and violence, and now you're too afraid to leave it. Such a tragedy.

At the same time, Mercury is for Emerald what she has been looking for in Cinder:

Emerald: We don't need him! Everything was going fine!

She initially refuses him, but it is clear that with time Mercury becomes the thing most similar to a family Emerald has:

She has been so fixated on Cinder and on how she can be worthy of Cinder’s love that she has missed how much Mercury has tried to protect her all along.

This is why Hazel is important for Emerald’s development:

Hazel: No more Gretchens, boy.

His sacrifice is about breaking his personal cycle of pain. His story starts with Gretchen dying when she was only a girl and it ends with him preventing another girl’s death. At the same time, he also helps breaking the cyle of abuse between Emerald and Cinder.

Emerald is told the truth about her relationship with Cinder by Mercury. Moreover, it seems something finally clicks for her here:

She observes Salem’s manipulation of Cinder and understands Cinder has been manipulating her in the same way.

However, it is thanks to Hazel’s sacrifice that Emerald sees what a genuine parental bond should be like. It should be about the parent protecting the child:

Hazel: What Gretchen would have done. And that starts with getting you away from here. Both of you.

And not the child protecting the parent:

Emerald: I know I can’t beat you. But I can fill that thing full of holes before you take me down.

It should be about the parent caring for the child unconditionally:

Hazel: Go.

And not about the child working hard to gain a parent’s love:

Cinder: You… You brought me back here. We failed.

Emerald: Cinder, you were hurt. I was just trying to help.

At the same time, Hazel’s death has taught Emerald the pain of losing a loved one:

And has forced Emerald to stand on her own two legs:

Oscar: I've seen what you can do, Emerald. However this fight ends, we could really use someone like you.

She can’t be protected forever, but she should start protecting others. She is powerful enough to do so and she must accept this responsibility.

So

I think Emerald could be key to Mercury's redemption

I think so too. Emerald saving Mercury is the perfect objective for her personal arc. It forces her to act as the savior instead of the one being saved.

Moreover, Mercury told her the truth about herself:

Mercury: You're in denial.

So Emerald might do the same for Mercury. This would also fit with her being the Emerald Tablet. The Tablet is written by Mercury to convey the truth to the world. Here, it might very well be the inverse: the Emerald Tablet might convey the truth to Mercury.

In general, Mercury and Tyrian’s foiling has to pay off, just like Emerald and Hazel’s:

The set-up is there for Tyrian and Mercury’s subplot to be about breaking cycles as well. Mercury’s story is about a child left alone with his abuser. Nobody comes to save him, so Mercury is forced to save himself by killing Marcus. Still, this only leads to him being stuck in the idea he is nothing, but an extension of his father. Right now, the cycle is repeating, but it is possible this time things will go differently because there is at least one person who cares about him.

Not only that, but (and this is nothing, but a baseless theory) even Qrow (aka a character who has unfinished business with Tyrian) might be a thematic fit to help Mercury:

Mercury: Bad hair, used a scythe, and smelled like my dad after a long day. It was him.

After all, Mercury himself draws a comparison between Qrow and his father since they are both alcoholic. However, Qrow has started a journey of rehabilitation for the sake of his nieces and their friends.

Qrow sees himself as bad for others and fundamentally unlucky because of his background and his semblance. So, his third fight with Tyrian being about saving a kid, who, in a sense, is even less lucky than him and has no semblance might be thematically fitting.

Despite it all, Qrow found a family and a place to belong and he might help Mercury find his (Emerald) as well.

SEMBLANCE OF THE SELF

Got no gun But I gleam like a blade and I'm harder than iron

Delusion I'll steal til your blind and defeat you from inside your mind

Emerald’s best weapon is her semblance, while Mercury’s semblance was stolen, so he could become a weapon.

This difference symbolizes their respective reactions to abuse.

Emerald uses her illusions as a coping mechanism.

This mechanism is well conveyed in CEM’s fight against Amber:

On one hand, Emerald creates a child version of herself who is well dressed and owns a bike. It is a rich version of Emerald because she must think that is the kind of child others would stop by to help. She does not believe she is likable or lovable. This is why she makes an illusory alter-ego, which is both true (she deep down is a crying child) and false (she is a street rat with nothing).

In general, this is Emerald’s way to approach others:

Emerald: Just left the stadium after your amazing fight! You guys were awesome!

Ren: Because she's scared. Just like us..

Emerald: Or maybe because I know how to get out of here. Anybody coming?

She either fakes an overly friendly demeanor or acts tougher than she is. In any case, she hides her true self.

On the other hand, Emerald is symbolically trapping herself in an illusion together with Amber. Amber can’t see the dangerous thief in front of her, but Emerald too can’t see the generous woman who is offering food to a crying child:

Cinder: Follow me, and you’ll never be hungry again.

Cinder promises Emerald food and love and this lie makes the girl unable  to see the genuine article when it is right there.

So Emerald tricks both others and herself. This is how she survives abuse.

This is why she keeps believing in Cinder while she is gone:

Emerald: You’re here! I knew you’d co--

And this is why symbolically her semblance grows stronger in an abusive environment:

Emerald: I’ve been working on my Semblance. I can help. I won’t tell anybody.

Salem: You really have been honing that Semblance of yours.

After all, this is when Emerald gets a “power-up”:

She has just lost Cinder and finds herself stuck with Salem. Her reaction is to have a breakdown and to project an illusion in the minds of nine people, when she had previously stated she could only do one/two minds at most.

Mercury weaponizes his trauma.

This is why his legs are Mercury’s true weapon, while Talaria is there just to cover and embellish the pain and ugliness under it.

Mercury fights Amber with only its bare legs because symbolically his trauma is still fresh and he has yet to work out a structured coping mechanism to it. His meeting with Cinder is the first step in this construction that evolves in the following months and is still evolving:

In CEM’s fight against Amber, Mercury uses his unfeeling legs to whitstand the violence of the elements:

Fire

Earth and Water

Air

He goes through the whole cycle without feeling any pain simply because his trauma has made him unfeeling:

I'm the one That was ripped from the earth and exposed to the sun

Marcus has literally turned Mercury into Iron:

But I gleam like a blade and I'm harder than iron

Still, the point is that mercury as a metal is not as hard as iron, but (in the alchemical scale of metals) is way more refined and closer to gold. Mercury can be better than his father, but his way to survive abuse is to repress himself.

This is why his semblance was stolen by his abuser. It is because abuse has taken away Mercury’s personhood.

So, both Emerald and Mercury face abuse by masking or repressing themselves. The difference is a matter of degree. Mercury can suppress his emotions and needs more, while Emerald can’t.

Theirs is a foiling about feeling too much to the point of self-harm and of feeling too little to the point of negation.

So, Emerald must struggle with her feelings not to be controlled by them, while Mercury must aknowledge them.

Emerald’s Hallucinations is a Semblance of The Self because it hides both Emerald herself and the truth.

This is interesting because, as stated above, the Emerald Tablet should convey the truth about alchemy. However, Emerald’s environment has turned her into an inversion of herself:

I'm the one Who rose out of filth and was loved by no-one

She is a gemstone, but is currently covered in dirt. She needs to polish herself, so she can shine and fit better in her allusion.

Mercury’s stolen semblance is a Semblance of The Self because it is linked to Mercury’s self-expression, which he must claim back.

Until then, he is bound to be stuck in an abusive cycle as nothing, but a weapon.

In general, there is some symbolism around Mercury which needs unpacking:

Mercury quoting Marcus:"This is a crutch!" "This makes you weak!"

Firstly, he has clearly interiorized what his father told him here. He refuses the idea of weakness and crutches to the point that his prosthetics, which are literal crutches get turned into weapons and even covered by other weapons. However, she fails them and leaves them in a dangerous environment. This is why they both leave her out of self-survival.

Narratively, Emerald and Mercury are two kids that must grow up. Right now, they are in some kind of adolescent phase. They have started their emancipation from their “parent”, but they have still to grow until they’ll be able to truly face Cinder.

It will probably be in this confrontation that they will affirm their growth. Right now, Cinder does not need to be coddled, but to be called out. Both Neo and Watts try to, but Cinder ignores them and retaliates against them. She needs a call out she can’t ignore and Emerald and Mercury are too rooted in who she deep down is for her to be unaffected by them.

At the same time, it would mark Mercury and Emerald’s first step into adulthood. Only then they can stop being a “half” and can truly become “one”, so a whole person.

Tikki let out a small hum, then flew over to the computer. “So… you can just put the two videos together on here?”

“That’s right,” Marinette confirmed. “And, if they don’t sync up perfectly, I can just do a little–” She waved a hand with a dramatic flourish. “–Marinette magic, so it’ll look good.”

Tikki nodded, staring thoughtfully at the screen. Then, she looked at Marinette, concerned.

Marinette blinked. “What’s wrong?”

“I’m just worried,” Tikki admitted. “What if Hawk Moth sends his victims after you?”

Marinette let out a snort, then smirked. “Let him.”

“Wh–” Tikki’s eyes were wide. “Let him?”

“That just makes my job easier,” Marinette replied, moving over to her computer chair and sitting down on it. “Thanks to LadyBugOut, I can keep track of every news channel that could possibly report when someone’s been akumatized, and I get notified of any akuma that people see. If I see something on the news or hear that there’s an akuma that I won’t be able to get to in time, all I gotta do is head home, turn into Ladybug, and wait. Hawk Moth is going to deliver his villains straight to me.”

Leaning back, Marinette titled her head towards Tikki. “Besides, even if someone might be akumatized in the bakery or at school, I know that Hawk Moth doesn’t have full control of his victims. I’m already saying in the video that me and Ladybug have a strict business relationship, so he’d know that I don’t know her identity and that using me as a bargaining chip would be just as good as using anyone else.

“If anything, me running the blog is the exact reason why they shouldn’t go after me. I’ve been learning self-defense hands-on for every bee post I’ve made and, accordingly to Ladybug–” She winked. “–I know all the secrets of akumatized objects. If I supposedly have contact with Ladybug, all I have to do is get my hands on their object and break it, then call Ladybug.”

“What if they want you to call Ladybug to bring her to them?”

Marinette pulled out her phone, showing Tikki a fake contact that was a silhouette of Ladybug. Faking an apologetic tone, Marinette said, “Oh, sorry, Hawk Moth. Looks like Ladybug’s not transformed right now. No can do.”

“And if you’re captured?”

“We have new permanent heroes now,” Marinette reminded her. “If it was just Chat, yeah, it could be a problem, but now we have three new teammates. Besides, if Hawk Moth realizes that Ladybug never actually shows up when he’s got me, he’s gonna start realizing this as a lost cause.”

With a smile, Marinette said confidently, “So Hawk Moth might even make sure that I’m left alone because, more than anything else, he wants my miraculous. If he thinks that Ladybug will stay away if Hawk Moth captures me, then I’m off the table for capture.”

“Won’t Paris think badly of Ladybug if she doesn’t show up?”

“Not with our other four heroes ready for action,” Marinette replied. “Ladybug does the planning, but what she’s known for is turning everything back to normal. By the time I’m freed, Ladybug can still swoop in and fix everything. Heck, even if I’m mind-controlled, which isn’t likely, there are four other heroes to find the akuma’s object and break it, then you can do Miraculous Ladybug yourself.”

Tikki nodded slowly, then straightened. “Wait–” She hesitated, as if trying to figure something out on her own. “What do you mean it isn’t likely?”

Kicking off the floor to give her chair a small spin, Marinette replied, “If there’s one thing I’ve learned about Hawk Moth, it’s that he either doesn’t like going through a lot of effort or doesn’t know how to use his powers properly. He’ll get tired of capturing me real quick when it doesn’t work out for him. He’s dangerous, but he’s not a genius.”

Tikki gaped, surprised to hear such a thing being said. “How do you know?”

Marinette stopped spinning, staring at Tikki and stating matter-of-factly, “No one in their right mind would akumatize a baby unless they were desperate. I bet he was either aiming for someone else or is throwing everything he can at us to see what sticks.

“That’s why he won’t make a bunch of akuma again like he did back during Heroes’ Day. He can’t keep track of everything at once. That’s why he had to be out in public; he couldn’t see what was going on otherwise.”

Tikki paused, needing to process what that meant. “So…”

“He’s running out of options,” Marinette finished. “We haven’t seen the peacock in a while, and I bet that’s for a reason. Could be whoever’s using it or it could just be Hawk Moth trying his hardest to keep it under wraps; he did seem pretty surprised before that thing showed up to let him get away.”

Tikki pursed her lips, clearly trying to think of another retort, but had nothing. “You’ve really thought this over.”

Marinette nodded. “Well, I’ve been set on the right path, y’know?”

She glanced up, thinking about everything that’d happened since she became Ladybug. “I spent so much time obsessing over Adrien that I was doing the bare minimum as a superhero. I didn’t have any plans to look for Hawk Moth and never really thought about it until we brought the grimoire to Master Fu.”

She ran a hand along her hair, then got up and pulled down her schedule. What was once a schedule of Adrien’s activities was now a plan for her activities.

“So I’ve gotta get organized. All that stuff with Adrien was draining so much of my time and I didn’t even realize it.”

She sighed, pulling the schedule down and letting it rise back up to its original place. “And for what? Nothing! I could’ve been making fashion!”

Tikki flew up to her, flashing a smile.

Marinette couldn’t help smiling back. “What is it now?”

Tikki pressed against Marinette’s cheek, giving it a gentle hug. “You were doing more than the bare minumum, even back then! I thought you were a great Ladybug!”

Marinette blushed, placing a hand behind Tikki in an attempt to hug back. “And now?”

Tikki floated away, pausing. She clearly didn’t know what would surpass “great.” She giggled, then offered, “You’re a greater Ladybug?”

Marinette chuckled. “Thanks, Tikki.”

Facing the camera, she stood proud. “Now, spots on!”

She transformed in a bright flash of light, then wandered over to the camera. She hit the record button, then walked over to the opposite seat she’d been sitting in during her last recording.

“Hey there, everyone!” she greeted the camera with a smile. “Today, I want to introduce everyone to my assistant: the creator of LadyBugOut, Marinette Dupain-Cheng!”

Marinette breathed, steeling herself up for class. Even though the general response of her reveal as “Ladybug’s assistant” was positive–most people happy that Ladybug wasn’t doing so much work on her own–she was still preparing herself for what the reaction of her classmates was. She’d never said a word this whole time, so she wondered if maybe they’d grill her for that.

Before Marinette could even make it to the window peeking into the class, she could hear yelling. It was loud, but Marinette couldn’t make it out.

As she reached the window, Marinette looked inside and noticed everyone crowded around someone. Worried that she’d need to play mediator again, she went for the door and opened it as fast as she could.

Her mouth dropped open. Standing in the middle of a good chunk of the class was Lila.

They were actually yelling at Lila. She was hunched over in her seat, looking like she wanted to crawl into a hole.

Part of Marinette was tempted to just let it play out, but she took a breath and stepped into the class.

Lila’s gaze darted up to her. Immediately, she stood, looking extremely upset (though Marinette imagined that she was faking it).

“How could you do this to me, Marinette?!”

Marinette blinked. “Do what?”

“I can’t believe you and Ladybug would try to sabotage me!” Lila said through fake tears. “After I said that Ladybug asked me to make LadyBugOut for her, you made a plan with her to make me look bad!”

Silence followed. The class was looking between Marinette and Lila.

Alya and Nino though, were pretending to be distracted by their phones. Alya had stared up very briefly to look at Marinette, but immediately went back to her phone. Adrien was sitting nearby, but seemed conflicted on intervening. Chloe and Sabrina were at their desk, looking ahead with innocence but also seeming very invested in all the shouting. The only other people who weren’t part of the crowd were Juleka and Rose, who were sitting quietly at their desk.

Marinette stared at Lila impassively. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she said.

Lila sank down to her desk, placing her hands to her face. “I thought you were so nice, Marinette! Why would you lie like this?”

Marinette went to interject, but Ivan cut in.

“She’s not the liar! You are!”

Lila gasped, staring up at Ivan in shock.

Ivan continued, “Marinette was never around to hear you talk about that! She always left as soon as class was over!”

It made sense that Ivan would know that, given that he sat next to Marinette in class. Lila, however, paled upon realizing that fact.

“W-wha–” she stammered. “No, that’s… someone must have told her!”

Kim glared at her, challenging her with, “Who? None of us ever followed Marinette out. We were all here, listening to you!”

He looked over at Marinette, gaze apologetic. Marinette simply smiled, waving at him.

Lila’s gaze was darting around the various classmates, most glaring at her at this point. “Then–Kitty Section!”

Juleka and Rose glanced at each other while Ivan’s gaze didn’t waver.

“You–you must’ve told her!” Lila insisted.

Rose tilted her head, not offended but confused. “We don’t talk about you around Marinette. She asked us not to.”

Lila looked back to Marinette, who simply raised her brows.

Adrien rose from his seat, finally doing something. “N-now, hang on, everyone–”

“Luka!” Lila shouted, pointing at Juleka. She was looking desperate at this point. “Juleka must’ve told Luka, who told Marine–”

Juleka stood, knocking a book off her desk. Her gaze was piercing, and Marinette had honestly never seen Juleka so upset.

“Are you saying that my brother would do something like that?!” Juleka asked loudly.

Lila was stunned silent, everyone else immediately backing off as Juleka headed straight for her.

“N-no,” Lila said, her voice pathetically small. “I just… thought–”

“Leave Luka out of this!” Juleka demanded. “I don’t even talk to him about you!”

Lila let out a noise like she was being strangled. Adrien went closer, looking ready to either restrain or calm Juleka, but Juleka just let out a huff and walked away, slumping back into her desk.

Rose slid over to her, gently rubbing her shoulder.

The rest of the classmates crowded back around Lila, their gazes even angrier than before as they waited for Lila to explain herself.

Lila turned, fumbling nervously with a paper on her desk as she tried to ignore everyone. Then, she perked up.

“I… I never said I made the LadyBugOut blog!” Lila pointed out. “Ladybug just asked me to!”

Standing up, Lila pushed her way through the crowd as politely as she could. She slipped in with Alya, then linked their arms together. Alya glanced over, confused.

“I didn’t want to say anything because I didn’t want to cause any drama,” Lila began, “but I actually never agreed to make that blog for Ladybug.”

Lila leaned closer to Alya, feigning sadness. “It was hard to say no to Ladybug, but I just couldn’t betray my friend like that.”

Alya looked surprised. “Really?”

“Of course!” Lila replied, staring right at Alya. “I was so worried about what Ladybug would say. She was always so jealous that you had a popular blog.”

Faking a sob, Lila continued, “I’m so sorry for lying about how good of a friend Ladybug was. She’s not as good as I said. I’d just promised to keep her reputation a secret, but I can’t lie to you guys anymore!”

Alya raised a hand, looking like she wanted to comfort Lila.

Before she could, the class started shouting again.

“Oh, save it, Lila!” Alix yelled.

Max added, “That’s a terribly specific lie! You’re picking apart simple word choices and using them as a safety net!”

Markov flew from Max’s bag, equally perturbed. “Max and I do not appreciate your lies and attempts to bury the facts!”

“Was everything else a lie too?!” Kim asked.

Nathaniel shook his head disapprovingly. “You don’t even know Ladybug, do you?”

“And you hurt Marinette just to make yourself look good!” Ivan accused, infuriated.

Marinette glanced at Adrien, feeling his eyes on hers.

Adrien immediately turned away, though she couldn’t read his expression.

Alya, meanwhile, had recoiled at everyone’s shouting, Lila still clutching her arm. Alya opened her mouth, closed it, then began to say, “Guys–”

Alix snapped her gaze to Alya. “Don’t think we’ve forgotten about you either, Alya!”

“W-what?” Alya asked. Her expression turned to offended. “What did I do?!”

“Don’t act like we’re dumb! Just because Lila’s takin’ heat here doesn’t mean we don’t remember what you tried to hide about that kiss!”

Alya made a face that implied that it was actually herself who’d forgotten it in the midst of the thorough thrashing Lila had been dealing with.

“I–” Alya stammered. One could imagine that Alya had planned a response, but had lost it in the moment.

She glanced down at Chloe, who’d played a large role in the last heated moment of the classroom, but had been completely silent in this one.

Chloe was simply sitting there, Sabrina filing at her nails. Perhaps feeling Alya’s eyes on her, Chloe looked over in Alya’s direction.

All she did was smirk at both Alya and Lila.

Alya gaped, then turned her gaze back to the rest of the class. “But–”

Nino couldn’t even get a word in. The classmates were quick to turn on Alya.

“I’m not surprised, but man, Alya!”

“I thought you really liked Ladybug?”

“Wasn’t the Ladyblog supposed to be professional? What happened to that?”

“I thought you’d be the type that hate lies! Is this some kind of ironic joke?”

“I can’t believe it! I defended you!”

“I recommended your blog to other people! What am I gonna tell them now?”

In the middle of the chaos, Alya glanced in Marinette’s direction.

Marinette said nothing, not knowing what Alya expected her to say. Was Alya really expecting her to play defense?

Marinette had no sort of protection to provide. She couldn’t play middle ground to something so obviously skewed, whether she wanted to or not.

However, instead of questioning her on that, Alya asked stiffly, loud enough to remain audible over the shouts, “Why’d you help Ladybug with her blog?”

The shouting stopped, everyone straightening before turning to Marinette.

Marinette raised a brow at Alya, as if the answer was obvious (because it was). “Ladybug needed help. How could I say no to that?”

“Lila did,” Alya replied with just a bit of disdain.

Marinette frowned. She stood strong, stating matter-of-factly, “I’m not Lila.”

She refrained from a sarcastic addition of, “Sorry to disappoint you.”

Something must’ve clicked between most of the class, because they suddenly began to look at Lila, then Marinette, then back to Lila.

Marinette didn’t understand at first, but then she realized...

They were looking at Lila like how they’d looked at Marinette, all the way back on Lila’s first day, right after Lila had tried to turn them against Marinette.

Now, they’d seen their mistake.

Without warning, just about everyone (excluding Lila, Alya, Nino, Chloe, Sabrina, and Adrien) rushed at Marinette. They shouted profuse apologies, though Marinette could hardly make any of them out when they were all being said at once.

Nonetheless, she felt appreciated, trying to reassure everyone that it was okay and she wasn’t mad.

The door creaked a bit behind her, and Miss Bustier’s voice rang out, “Is something the matter?”

The class all looked at her, then quickly dispersed and returned to their seats. Mylene, who’d been largely quiet this whole time and had a seat behind Lila, moved just slightly to be behind Alya instead. Then, obviously debating with herself, she moved back to being behind Lila.

After a moment of consideration and realizing she had nowhere else to move to, she resigned herself to sit behind neither of them, trying for somewhere in the middle.

Marinette, taking a breath after all the “excitement,” glanced down at Lila, who seemed to want to sink as low as possible into her seat. She probably had one or two back-up lies for certain situation, but to have that video sprung on her out of nowhere; she certainly hadn’t been ready for that.

Allowing herself a little time to forget her better nature, Marinette smirked at the justice Lila’d just been dealt since she’d come into class. That went far better than she’d expected.

I’ve heard a lot of PornHub criticism over the years that is primarily based on the company being racist, sexist, transphobic, etc. and unapologetically stealing content from marginalized sex workers who rely on that content to make a living when they know it’s nearly impossible for them to do anything to keep the videos they work hard on from being stolen. I agree 100% with those criticisms and they’re a huge driving factor behind my hatred for PH.

But it also occured to me today that not only is PornHub’s entire concept of “free porn” is harmful in another way to both sex workers and women: when porn isn’t behind a paywall, people, especially men, begin to develop the idea that they’re entitled to women’s bodies. Free porn teaches men not only that the work that sex workers do isn’t worth spending money on, but that they are enabled access to women’s bodies with nothing in return. Ever notice how common it is for men to follow a woman on Instagram right before a hookup and then unfollow her right after, giving her the idea that he might be interested in more than a one night stand? I think it’s perfectly fine to only want a one night stand, by the way, I just too often see men who do the bare minumum to have sex with a woman and then immediately cast her aside, and to me I can see a connection to PornHub’s “free porn” business model - women’s bodies are worth nothing more than the bare minimum. And no, that’s not me criticizing women who want a no-strings-attached hookup - I’ve just had too many friends who have been led on by a guy only to be unfollowed or blocked after they’ve had sex (and shitty, one-sided sex at that).

Furthermore, there’s definitely a direct correlation to PH/other free porn sites and lack of respect for the work sex workers do. Very often these days do I see people mocking others for paying for porn. “Why would you spend money on these stupid whores when sites like PornHub exist where you can consume SWers’ hard work for free? Idiot.” That’s a massive fucking issue; not only are sex workers having their content stolen from them, they lose future profit when people are actively going around discouraging potential buyers from paying for what they produce. I’d say it’s also contributed majorly to the lack of respect people have for sex workers; it’s not real work if you can easily find content on the internet without even really having to pirate it, right? With traditional acting, you have to pay to watch movies and TV shows, and if you’re pirating, there are people who will look down on you for it because “that’s illegal and you’re stealing their livelihood!” But it’s extremely uncommon to find anyone who will look down on you for consuming stolen porn.

This doesn’t only affect independent sex workers too; lots of mainstream porn companies like Brazzers and Bangbros have had to lay off employees over the past decade due to severe drops in site membership. This directly hurts the actors they hire and industry rates, and it’s a lot more difficult to make it in the mainstream than it was ten years ago, even with an agent.

Free porn devoid of paywalls is one of the biggest issues facing sex workers and women today. Stop watching on PH and other similar sites; porn is real acting that deserves to be paid for, and we need to stop exacerbating the idea that women’s bodies in particular are free and sex with anyone shouldn’t ever require more than the bare minimum.

Total Carnage

I attended Napoli Comicon at the end of this April and my wallet took a sigh of relief as... well, there really wasn’t much interesting or worth buying! Retrogaming booths are getting redundant and they all seem to offer the same titles over and over: most of them are centered on overstocking with Pokèmon cartridges which are, indeed, very popular item among customers, but aren’t a surprise for me anymore as I’ve long collected every title available for the Game Boy; others try to scam newcomers with bootlegs, and some others have inflated their prices to absolute madness. It’s getting harder for me to round up a big stack of games during conventions, and I’m putting all my faith in this year’s LuccaComics, hoping that such a large event will surely push sellers to offer their best titles. Nevertheless, I still wanted to get a souvenir from the con, and got this cartridge above and another one, which I’ll show shortly.

Developped by Midway, Total Carnage bears way too many similarities with their previously released Smash TV, famous arcade cash-guzzler with a reality show twist; however, only Total Carnage was ported on Game Boy, and this resulted in ugly, ugly graphics! Seriously, this title could be quoted as the perfect example on how to NOT render arcade sprites on a handheld console! Fortunately, both graphics and sounds become passable at best once you dive into action, because at that point, the sprites are minuscule, stripped down to the bare minumum, and the sound is completely muted. Not even Nintendo Power could suffer it as the staff uttered a final verdict of 2 out of 5. Gameplay wise, though, it needs to be said, Total Carnage delievers what it advertises: it’s a spiritual sequel of Smash TV and clearly reminiscent of it, as already mentioned, and as such, it predominantly features mindless shooting with sparse scrolling... whenever the game feels like it, apparently.

It is not unplayable, however: controls are responsive and Captain Carnage’s bullets (yeah, that’s the protagonist’s name) have a decent range. It would probably entertain a kid for 10 minutes, if they don’t have any access to other cartridges for their Game Boy, and could’ve entertained for 10 minutes more if it featured multiplayer modes like co-op, or battle: the reason why they’re lacking is unknown. Let’s face it, I got this game solely because that label is hilarious.
