Adam Pendleton Father Divine, 1994 Acrylic with Silkscreen on Canvas 30 ½ x 30 3/8in. ~ Father Divine showcases Adam Pendleton’s unique and powerful command of two basic elements, color and language. Thirty words of bright red prose run across the yellow canva, evoking conflicting feelings of loss, remorse and admiration. It is quite possible that Pendleton is recalling Father Divine, a prominent religious leader during the 1920's who united tens of thousands of people under his Peace Mission movement which sought to fight injustice, provide aid to those in need and was a major force building up to the Civil Rights movement. Adam Pendleton (Richmond, VA, 1984) is an African-American conceptual artist. He moved to New York from Virgina in 2002 and joined Yvon Lambert Gallery three years later. Pendleton works with silkscreen prints, paint and video.
