the picture shows German troops like Askaris in German East Africa during World War 1. it is an artillery observation post in the Rufiji Delta. The sailor on the picture probably comes from the SMS Königsberg but only my guess is because in the 1 World War sailors from this ship were integrated into the troops of Paul Lettow-Vorbeck.

its applicable! theyre born and then they die eventually. they just live a bit longer. u can think ab it like, oh wowww hes 500 years old, but thats still a very small slice of how long the earth has been turning...
im strongly in the camp of "they spring out of the dirt" for how theyre born, but a lot of people prefer the "they were human once" angle—which is fair, because there was one guy that explicitly was human once, became a nation, then gave up that status to age normally again. they called him out as an abnormality, but i think thats a nice way to end their lives. if its "they dissolve into dust instantly" vs "they age and die normally" i prefer the latter...
the immortality stuff is VERY VERY fun! i have a lot of thoughts on how the aphws universe works. i think their lives are dependent mostly on a group identity, somewhat on a land claim, and 0% on a political entity. i also think the Way They Work changed a lot with the modern age. like how in canon the fantasy elements faded as the world modernized, the Way They Work became a lot more grounded with that. theyre less fantastic than they used to be.

Dec 10 1916 in WWI
During the Battle of Rufiji Delta SMS Königsberg was cornered by the British Royal Navy and sunk. Its guns were salvaged by the German commander Lettow-Vorbeck for his successful East African land campaign.

Japanese Dreadnought Explodes

The Kawachi.
July 12 1918, Tokuyama--More dreadnoughts were lost to accidents in the First World War than to enemy action.  Adding to that total on July 12 was the Japanese dreadnought Kawachi, at anchor before training exercises in the Inland Sea.  At 3:51 PM she was wracked by an explosion in one of her magazines; four minutes later, she capsized, killing over 600 of her approximately 1000-man crew.  As was almost always the case, sabotage was immediately suspected, but no reasonable suspects could be found.  An inquiry found that the cause was likely mishandled cordite, but could not be completely confident in that conclusion.

O cruzador alemão SMS Königsberg foi afundado em um dia como este, no ano de 1915, durante a Primeira Guerra Mundial, por dois pequenos navios (monitor) britânicos, no Rio Rufiji, na Tanzânia, na África. O Königsberg era um cruzador leve, construído pela Marinha Imperial alemã. Não era um navio próprio para combates, mas a embarcação alemã estava na África Oriental Alemã na época em que eclodiu a Grande Guerra, em agosto de 1914. Inicialmente, o Königsberg, armado e destinado ao reconhecimento e escolta, tentou atacar os barcos que faziam o tráfego britânico e inglês na região. No dia 20 de setembro de 1914, ele surpreendeu e afundou o cruzador britânico HMS Pegasus, na Batalha de Zanzibar. Depois, ficou abrigado no Rio Rufiji para reparar seus motores. Porém, antes que os reparos fossem concluídos, dois barcos britânicos encontraram o Königsberg. Como eram incapazes de destruir a embarcação alemã, eles criaram um bloqueio. Depois de várias tentativas para afundar o navio, os britânicos enviaram dois barcos “monitores”, Mersey e Severn, para destruir o cruzador alemão. Em 11 de julho de 1915, as embarcações chegaram perto o suficiente para danificar seriamente o Königsberg, forçando a tripulação a afundar o navio. Os sobreviventes resgataram as armas do cruzador e se juntaram à campanha de guerrilha do tenente-coronel Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck. O Königsberg foi parcialmente desmontado entre 1963 e 1965 para sucata. Os restos do navio afundaram no leito do rio.

Wilbur Smith's Shout At The Devil was first published in 1968, and was loosely based, on a real historical incident - the 1915 sinking of SMS Königsberg. British film producer Michael Klinger soon bought the rights to the novel, along with several other Smith books, and a film adaptation was announced in 1969. Smith worked on the script, which made substantial changes to the ending of the book, but financial difficulties meant the film was not completed until 1976. Klinger did not produce any more films based on Smith's work, and the relationship between the two deteriorated. This Pan reissue dates from 1977.
