¿Ubicas a Sofia Niño de Rivera? Ok, en una rutina decía que ella había tenido el síndrome del patito feo, y que fue ya más grande cuando los niños se le acercaron y que ella entonces se iba con cualquiera que le diera la mínima atención porque pues ella se consideraba fea. Palabras más, palabras menos, debieron estar ahí, el caso es que, amiga, 100% soy esa, o sea tipo, lit soy yo bebé.

Cuando entré en la secundaria era una cosa muy abstracta, y que además, estaba tan acomplejada, que no tenía ni gusto, ni personalidad, ¡Nada! En retrospectiva a veces pienso que alguien simplemente me reseteó a los 11 años y me escupió al mundo con la mente en blanco, sólo eso explicaría que fuera consciente de muchas cosas a edades preocupantes… Volviendo al punto, era una cosa muy rara, pero después pasó uno de los eventos canónicos más transcendentales de mi vida: me cortaron el cabello. Antes de este evento yo siempre usaba el cabello amarrado, con un chiiiiiiingo de spray o gel, nunca lo usaba suelto más que en la casa, o en el pueblo. En la escuela jamás me habían visto con el cabello suelto, y además yo era la nueva, como siempre…y fue así como con mi primer evento canónico, llegó mi primer ataque de ansiedad, ya que yo salí un día equis de clases, llegué a hacer tiempo a la oficina de mi, en ese entonces, tía favorita y se acababa de cortar el cabello y se veía divina, y como yo siempre la veía con una idolatría insuperable, inmediatamente escupí un: ¡yo también quiero el cabello así!. Ay no, poco iba yo a saber del tornado que me acababa de echar encima, ya que resultó que se lo habían cortado en un local que estaba justo en el piso de abajo de su oficina (donde estábamos en ese preciso momento) desafió su destino al arriesgarse a volver a desatar la furia de mi madre en mi último corte de cabello, al cuál llamaremos ‘El fenómeno Nery del 97’, y me llevó en seguida con el estilista, explicó el corte con su corte y cuando reaccioné, el 70% de mi cabello estaba en el piso, en pedazos, a mechones… Mi cabeza se sentía ligera y una oleada de un sentimiento nuevo invadía mi cuerpo, me recorría como una corriente eléctrica, mientras me veía a los ojos en el espejo… Era yo, obviamente, pero a la vez no era yo, era una persona… bonita. Fue la primera vez que vi mi reflejo y pensé: así me siento bonita. Y justo cuando todo se estaba poniendo bien, me dio ansiedad pensar cómo me iban a recibir en la escuela al día siguiente. Yo ya me sentía Karla Termópolis, te juro. Por algún motivo creía que me iban a molestar o hacer bullying, pero por suerte no fue así, al contrario.

Lo que terminó pasando fue que gané seguridad, de repente me empecé a mover con confianza, puse la frente en alto y empecé a avanzar como si supiera perfectamente a dónde quiero llegar. Y hasta la fecha así sigo.

Entonces con la seguridad, llegó mi afiliación temporal al primer grupito de amigos que me encontró en esta temporada llamada “Secundaria” y al poco tiempo después: mi primer gran amor, Erick.

A Erick lo conocí en un foro de internet, por el foro sabíamos que vivíamos en la misma colonia, decidimos vernos, era de noche así que nos citamos en el camellón a unas dos calles de donde estaba en ciber café en el que estaba… Yo tenía 13, él 17.

Llegué, llegó y yo vi a ese pelafustán y dije: Oh, estoy enamorada de este hombre, vamos a ser muy felices juntos criando a nuestros nietos. Jajajajaja qué tonta, pero sí, oooobviamente este wey traía una labia impresionante, y cuando reaccioné, ya estaba yo en su cama, sin pantalones ni calzones, perdiendo mi virginidad con un vecino que conocí en un foro de internet.

Erick fue alguien que marcó mucho mi vida con casi nada de esfuerzo, sabía mucho de temas que me interesaban, así que él me platicaba, y yo abría las piernas, pero no sentí nada nunca, y no me gustó, y eso le dio en el orgullo. Yo siempre hice todo lo que pude por llamar su atención, incluso convencí a mi madre de meterme a estudiar la prepa a donde él iba. Y lo logré. Incluso me iban a golpear por él, y yo ni en cuenta. Obviamente nunca me volvió a hacer caso, y al poco tiempo embarazó a su novia y desapareció.

Y yo feliz de que no me haya embarazado a mí, ¡Ja!

ARE YOU STAYING HOME FROM WORK AND SCHOOL? Home from work, we got officially furloughed two weeks ago.

IF YOU’RE STAYING HOME, WHO’S THERE WITH YOU? The folks, my love bird Helen and my two turtles, Little Rafael and Nikka.

ARE YOU A HOMEBODY? Totally, but after being home 28 days I’m going a little crazy, I’m also worried that being home so much is going to affect the way I react when we all are all finally allowed to go back out. Just the thought of getting on mass transit makes me anxious.

AN EVENT THAT YOU WERE LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT GOT CANCELLED? BookCon was coming up at the Javits, was looking forward to that. I had plans for a trip back to Ecuador that is officially canceled even if this ended tomorrow. And a bunch of other things that start to happen as we hit springtime in the city. NYC has so many movie and food festivals coming up that will likely not happen and that makes me sad. The city that never sleeps is currently hibernating and it’s depressing.

WHAT MOVIES HAVE YOU WATCHED RECENTLY? The Disney musicals, like Descendants and Teen beach movie, they’re silly and fun.

WHAT SHOWS ARE YOU WATCHING? 911, Community, Bob’s burgers, Feel Good, thinking about starting Casa de papel. Spanish Comedy specials like Sofia Niño de Rivera (check her out, she has two on Netflix and she’s hilarious)

WHAT MUSIC ARE YOU LISTENING TO? Ronen and Rafael’s playlists, some Harry Styles when I’m writing.

WHAT ARE YOU READING? Fanfiction, I have books to read but they remain untouched. Instead, it’s Sterek fics, Tarlos and Stucky for this girl.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING FOR SELF-CARE? Writing has been my main source of comfort during this time, it helps me with the stress, and knowing that my fics are helping others get through their day is one of the few things that makes me smile. I video chat with my best friend and get to see my godson that way, he’s getting bigger and bigger and I’m missing it. Talking to my friends on discord helps so much. And when I need it, I let myself have a good cry.
