my 5th favorite game that i played in 2023 is...
Tumblr media
Sonic Triple Trouble 16-Bit
in times of Sonic "drought" between major games, i often find myself turning to fangames to keep the flame alive. nobody understands Sonic better than the fans, after all, and Sonic especially has a wealth of incredible talent in its fanbase. Before and After The Sequel were two of my biggest hyperfixations in high school! and following the development of Time Twisted is ultimately how i met my partner – a story i should really immortalize on here one day…
but Sonic isn't going through a drought at all! Frontiers and Superstars both released rather recently… and both are aggressive 7/10s. arguably, Sonic's aggressive 7/10s are some of its most interesting experiences! but Frontiers isn't really my style, and Superstars didn't really do as much for me as i hoped it would.
that brings us to Triple Trouble, which is exactly my style of Sonic game – and one of the most outstanding fangames i've ever played.
Tumblr media
the original Triple Trouble on Game Gear is secretly one of my favorite Sonic games… sure it's crusty, but i love how unapologetically weird and charming it is! bringing its unique ideas to life in 16-bit is an incredible idea on paper, but not everyone has the chops to execute on it – making it all the more special that this fangame DELIVERS on its premise.
the level layouts are open and explorable! the second act of each zone mixes in unique new gimmicks, just like mania! the music is perfectly redone! swapping between sonic and tails at will is a fantastic idea! and all the new content, references, and cute little details feel right at home among the familiar beats of the original. this is about as close to a perfect remake as it gets.
one such little detail that i won't spoil is a slightly obscure Sonic 3 reference right at the beginning of the game that made me laugh my ass off before even getting out of the starting gate – and that momentum continued the whole way through. the way it follows up Sonic 3's story beats in general is a great homage to the whole series, cementing Triple Trouble's place in the classic Sonic "storyline" (if such a thing exists).
Tumblr media
it doesn't just carry itself on references, either – filing off the crust from the original game's mechanics turn them into a fresh new experience, and the remake even brings new ideas to the table! so many little details that made me squee, so many big new moments that made it feel fresh, without any of it feeling heavy handed or underbaked.
so if you've never played the original Triple Trouble, this remake is the perfect way to get into it! and if you've never (or barely) touched classic Sonic, this is a best-in-class example of how much fun it is. it's well worth your time.
…did i mention it's free? it's a fangame, of course it's free! go play it!!

Maybe this is hypocritical of me since we kinda were like "learn to praise something without comparing it unfavorably to other things" the other day, but I can't help but think of how refreshingly straightforward the TT remake is compared to IDW, especially in its competitive campaign. Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles all catch Eggman's bluff when he describes himself as a "man of good morals." Fang's motive? Money. There's no dancing around these subjects, lmao
It never crossed my mind to compare them lol. I only discovered yesterday that competition mode had cutscenes! But it's a very cute touch that highlights interactions between characters, even those who wouldn't normally interact like Knuckles and Fang. Sonic is a little shit but in a likeable way lol, and it's cute how the first challenge is, for Sonic and Tails, a warm up between friends. And the visual novel style portraits! So much care put into this game <3
TT 16 bit is an earnest product born out of love and respect for a neglected part of Sonic's history, done by passionate and competent people. That's all there is. I'd still rather not make comparisons, one because TT and IDW are two very different medias, and two because TT doesn't need it. I hope SEGA recognizes the effort of the devs, not in a "lol see how fans keep being better than you" way, but in a "you guys deserve all the recognition you can get, much like the Mania team" way :)
I could say, however, that I'm glad that now we have something positive to talk about after months of discourse lmao.

Favorites of 2022 | Countdown
2022 was a strange year for me. I didn’t keep up with as many albums and games and other media like I wanted to but I did have an overall successful year. 2023 is already shaping up to be different but before I head into 2023 for good in March, here are some of my favorite things. Again there aren’t a lot here but enough to talk about and 2022 was definitely a decent year for entertainment if not a great one per se.
Tumblr media
Favorite Video Game: Sonic Triple Trouble 16-bit
I’m kind of cheating on this. It’s not an official release and it’s a remake of a Game Gear game from the 90s, but similar to when I played AM2R, I immediately fell in love with it. Yes, I played Elden Ring but I couldn’t get into it. My most anticipated game of the year was The King of Fighters XV but it kind of fell short of what I wanted. I played Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge and it was everything I wanted from a brand new game with a retro feel. However, Sonic Triple Trouble 16-bit is inspired. We may have had proof already that old school Sonic still works, but where Sonic Mania felt like a Greatest Hits album, Sonic Triple Trouble 16-bit feels like a previously lost but better version of a preexisting album. So many new tricks, gameplay concepts, and new mechanics are either introduced or implemented from recent Sonic games into levels that aren’t entirely new but have new designs that take advantage of the Genesis aesthetic. It’s also a showcase as to how to implement other gameplay styles and gimmicks for varied gameplay while not hurting the core gameplay loop. Different gameplay styles can be implemented in a traditional Sonic game if done well and this shows that effectively and prominently. This is an unofficial release so just know that Google is your friend, but when you get a chance, definitely check this out. Especially if you are a fan of Sonic Mania, you’ll love this.

Favorite Album: The Weeknd: Dawn FM
This album was early in the year and it just kind of came and went. Strange considering The Weeknd is such a high profile artist and he released arguably the best album of his career. Now I say that with some caveats. I personally like Trilogy a bit more but that is a collection of his first three mixtapes. Also, in terms of studio albums, I think After Hours is a strong contender for the title of best album as well and it’s difficult to choose between the two since they tonally are very different. However, Dawn FM is compositionally more consistent in my opinion. 2022 seemed to have issues with that in general, as I found a lot of the albums I heard in 2022 were very lopsided. Michelle Branch’s new album had this problem, the new Harry Styles had this issue as well, the list goes on. However, The Weeknd’s Dawn FM stays consistent the entire runtime and also manages to continue the thematic concept introduced in After Hours. Not to mention “Take My Breath” might be my song of the year. Much more catchy and tight than really anything The Weeknd has done, the groove is funky, the lyrics are macabre, and it manages to do all of this while maintaining the underlining feeling of dread that permeates the whole album. Speaking of, the use of the synths on this album do a great job of communicating isolation and artificiality and how the two can become one and the same in the afterlife. It makes positive moments like “Out of Time” feel less so and depressing tracks like “Gasoline” feel excessively dramatic in the grand scheme of things. Life, if you will. A fantastic album, with multiple layers, check it out if you haven’t.
Those are my favorite of 2022. I could have a movie, and a show pick but there wasn’t a movie I saw that I would call great (although I really enjoyed the second Sonic the Hedgehog movie) and I really only watched one new show last year: Only Murders in the Building. It’s good, I do recommend it, but it kind of wins by default so I reckon that’s not very fair. I know we are well into 2023 now but what are your favorites of 2022? Let me know in the comments.

I made this one for Sonic Triple Trouble 16Bit's launch. (You know I also did graphics for it?) Well, I wanted to.... took me a bit longer due to several troubles with my tools and incapability of giving it the color style I originally wanted (I think you can guess which^^')
Anyway I still think it turned out quite nice and I'm really happy with my re-design of X-Treme's Metal Mk. III (the original looked pretty badass tho) but I still wonder if a STT16Bit could fit somewhere in the Fleetway canon.
BTW don't forget to try any codes in the game's soundtest ;)

Note
I was quick to catch on to the Mickey Mania-ness of certain moments in Triple Trouble 16-bit as well, lol. But I also appreciate how they remixed Knuckles' theme by giving it Stardust Speedway riffs... ;D
As @rollflasher also pointed out, the fact that Knuckles' theme is based on his prototype theme can also be a clue
It doesn't really feel like Knuckles' theme, right? It's not as iconic. It's not the original.
And in fact, in Knuckles' story, his S&K theme plays! Because he's the real deal :D
The details man. They're good.
