for real WHERE does the idea that [utdr humans] are nongendered so that "you can project on them" come from. their literal character arcs are about NOT being a blank slate to be filled in by the audience

i think i understand the assumption on some level for undertale, because there is a very intentional effort to make you identify with the "player character" in order to make your choices feel like your own (the beating heart of undertale's metanarrative lies in giving you an alternative path to violence against its enemies after all, and whether you're still willing to persue it for your own selfish reasons. YOUR agency is crucial).

of course, the cardinal plot twist of the main ending sweeps the rug from under your feet on that in every way, and frisk's individuality becomes, in turn, a tool to further UT's OTHER main theme: completionism as a form of diegetic violence within the story. replaying the game would steal frisk's life and happy ending from them for our own perverse sentimentality, emotionally forcing our hand away from the reset button.

i think their neutrality absolutely aids in that immersion. but also, there's this weird attitude by (mostly) cis fans where it being functional within the story makes it... somehow "editable" and "up to the player" as well? which is gross and shows their ass on how they approach gender neutrality in general lol.

but also like. there's plenty of neutral, non PCharacters in undertale and deltarune. even when undertale was just an earthbound fangame and the player immersion metanarrative was completely absent, toby still described frisk as a "young, androgynous person". sometimes characters are just neutral by design. it's not that hard to understand lol.

anyone who makes this argument for kris deltarune is braindead. nothing else to say about it.

#this is a very difficult topic to discuss imo because on Some level I don't completely disagree with people who make that argument for chara #in SPIRIT. if not in action. like my point still stands characters can just Be neutral. and if that level of customization had been intended #well Pokemon's been doing the ''are you a boy or a girl'' shtick for ages. no reason why that couldn't have been included as well #but i do feel that we're supposed to identify with chara within the story. not as in chara is us but as in we are chara #and i think someone playing the game without outside interferences and (wrongly) coming to the conclusion that chara IS literally #themselves in the story. and thus call them by their own name (the one they likely inputted at the start) and pronouns #will be someone who grasped undertale's metanarrative more than someone who went in already spoiled on the NM route who thinks of chara #(and on some level frisk as well) as completely separate from us with independent wills and personhoods at any time #who treats them as nonbinary. even if their approach is more ''appropriate'' to a gender neutral person #systematic error vs manually changing every measure to fit what you already think is going to be the correct result. ykwim? #of course this opens a whole new parentheses while discussing the game outside of your personal experience #because even if you DO see chara as a self insert then they are a self insert for EVERYONE. women men genderqueer people #i don't call chara ''biscia'' even though that's what i named the fallen human in my playthrough. neither do i use they because i also do #if you're describing the character/story objectively in how they are executed then you're going to talk about them neutrally #because you ain't the only sunovabitch who played the darn game sonny #so like. either way you turn it. even in the most self insert reading you'd STILL logically use they/them so ¯⁠\⁠_⁠(⁠ツ⁠)⁠_⁠/⁠¯ git gud #answered asks

The younger male immediately pounced on you, embracing you tightly. Unbeknownst to you, the brunet had raised his head to shoot a smug smirk at Luxiem, tightening his hold on you. His actions caused the boys to bristle up at the non-verbal threat.

"Okay! Hug time over!" Mysta loudly declared, yanking you out from Alban's hug. The younger male merely rolled his eyes at their actions before facing you once more.

"So what brings you here senpai?" Alban asked, opening the door wider to allow entry.

"Ike and I wanted to come and chat. We haven't been by in a while and it's been even longer since we just sat down and talked about anything. The rest of the boys just wanted to tag along." You shrug, minding not to give any indicators that you knew of the stupid prank.

"Oh you're too sweet senpai!" Alban cried as he fake sobbed into his elbow, earning an eyeroll from you.

"Calm down you over-dramatic pussy. They're here for everyone, not just you. Where are the others?" Mysta quickly interrupted from the living room where he had made himself comfortable.

"They're in their rooms you mangy mutt," Alban snipped, before pulling you to a free loveseat. Once you were seated, he immediately made himself comfortable by laying himself across your lap, stretching out so no one else could seat.

Ike had quickly moved to claim the lone blue arm chair, a book in hand that he had snagged from the bookshelf whilst Shu and Mysta bickered over the couch.

"Wait, guys, where did Vox and Luca go?" You asked, not seeing the two aforementioned members.

"I think they went upstairs?" Ike said, his eyes still glued to the book he was reading. You let out a sigh as you gently ran your hand through Alban's hair, mindful of his hairclips, watching as Mysta immediately scrambled off the couch, calling out for Vox and Luca, Shu following at a safe distance.

"EAT SHIT FULGUR!"

"TAKE THIS SONNY!"

"There's the chaos," Ike drawled as he made eye contact with you. Alban grumbled before getting off of you, choosing to go see what the chaos was about and maybe joining.

Mikey paused.

The cat's cradle in his hands was unfinished - halfway done - but that didn't matter anymore.

Leo spoke. Spoke for the first time in weeks ever since they brought him back home...

And Mikey was confused as to the meaning of his brother's first words.

"What did you say?" he asked.

Leo raised a heavly bandaged hand - his only hand - and slowly pointed one finger at him. Mikey could see with crystal clear clarity how heavy the way Leo's arm shook, as if the action alone was so physically daunting that it tired him in just a few seconds.

Mikey was ready to gently take Leo's hand and lower it down when his brother spoke again, voice raspy and so, so different than what it had been weeks ago.

"Box."

With his brother's hand pointing at him, Mikey connected the dots.

"I'm... I'm Box?"

Leo nodded. "Box," he repeated again.

Mikey tried to smile, he did, but the way Leo's eye went to look down at the blanket covering him in shame made him realize that his smile was more or less of a grimace.

"Ssso-... orry..."

"It's okay!" Mikey chirped, wincing a bit at how Leo flinched at the loudness. "I'm fine with a new nickname!" He hummed, making a show of thinking the name over. He even scrunched up his beak. "Hmm, Box... Box... I like it! Box! We can add that to the list-"

"Na-... name..."

Mikey blinked. "What?"

Leo leaned forward, his face twisting in pain just a bit as his finger poked Mikey in the middle of his plastron.

"Box... is y-... yeerr... na-name..."

Leo's face then changed to one of confusion.

"Wha-... what's a-a ni-nick... name?"

It’s wild how shipping culture has changed so drastically over time on the internet.

In the old days people shipped characters who either had only one line of dialogue with each other, never even met, or not even from the same piece of media. It was the wild west and sure some ships were uncomfortable but people had the mindset to just block the tag and stay away from ships they didn’t enjoy.

Nowadays? It’s more like people have to clarify that their ship isn’t canon compliant, character adjacent, and story irrelevant otherwise they get a flood of comments saying “but this character isn’t like this in canon” and some people legitimately get angry if you’re not following the canon.

Like- shipping and fandom culture from what I understand it is about engaging with media in a way that caters to you. And if you don’t like a ship or show just… block the relevant tags and don’t engage in the ships? The internet isn’t supposed to cater to us- we have to cater ourselves to our internet environment. And no matter how many times people may harass others over a fandom or ship they don’t like, those ships are not gonna disappear.

The internet has just been getting worse when people have decided to place morality in their opinions by saying things like “if you enjoy the ship then you support (insert horrible thing here that’s usually completely unrelated to the ship itself)” when it used to be “eh, not my thing” and people just moved on.

And for the record this isn’t about a specific ship or anything- just an observation of how fandom has evolved (and regressed) over the years and I find it fascinating from a sociological perspective cause we still don’t know how having the internet from birth affects the development of kids and how that affects how they interact with others- isn’t that scary?

I know that’s slightly unrelated but the way people engage in media has been changing over they years and that also involves fandom and the maturity level thereof in the internet space and someone smarter than me could probably write a whole thesis paper about fandom culture and how the internet has hindered the social development of people and how that affects community specifically from a fandom lens.

Just- for your sanity younger internet children: it’s not worth harassing others over something as trivial as ‘it’s not canon that this character kisses another character.’ Just find ships you like. Block ships you don’t. And just enjoy your time doing what you like!

You can’t control the internet but you can nurture your little corner of it.
