How did the Ancient Greeks and the Byzantines each celebrated Christmas? (Or winter in general 😅)

Christmas started being celebrated on December 25th in Rome in 336. The Roman Empire split for good in 395 so I am just gonna go with how the Byzantines celebrated Christmas. Not many surviving sources remain but I found on Quora the answer of Eleftherios Tserkezis, who apparently has a master's degree in Byzantine history, so I am essentially giving you his answer as I doubt there is more informative souce easily available.

Quoting parts from Eleftherios Tserkezis's answer on Quora:

"Christmas was always a major feast. The church of Constantinople originally put it on par with Easter and Epiphany, and later counted it among the twelve great feasts after Easter. Various liturgical elements proved its prominence — 40 days of preparatory fast (though less strict than the Great Lent), vigils, a pre-feast period longer than any other etc. Hymns and sermons focused on the meaning of Christmas for salvation and the paradox of the incarnation. According to a 12th c. source, Christmas mangers were sometimes set up inside churches with real boys playing the role of Jesus, although conservatives disapproved.

Things on the street were more colourful and vibrant. Roads and houses were cleaned and decorated with rosemary and myrtle. Children, and sometimes adults too, would go from door to door playing the flute and pipe, and singing Christmas, New Year and Epiphany carols. Those were folk songs, quite different from the solemn, high-minded church hymns, but not without their own taste and value. They often included lines in praise of, and containing wishes about, the families they were sung to. The singers expected treats or some other form of payment and wouldn’t leave without receiving it. Mockery of institutions such as the emperor or church was not uncommon in Byzantium, and the authorities themselves were particularly lax on holidays. Chariot races were also held on Christmas day, usually in the emperor’s presence. The church didn’t condone any of that, but couldn’t do much.

The menu of the day included meat, which could be beef, goat, hare, bird etc. The winter pig was also slaughtered around Christmas, depending on the exact local tradition. In the middle Byzantine period, on December 26, the Byzantines prepared and gave each other a syrupy delicacy known as lochozema. Made of flour, semolina, honey, herbs, sesame, nuts and cinnamon*, it was normally offered as energy booster to women who had just given birth. Its association with Christmas is obvious, although the church stressed that the Virgin Mary didn’t go through regular puerperium. People need to feel familiarity with the divine.

Christmas was also important for the imperial ceremonial. According to Constantine VII’s De cerimoniis (10th c.), the emperor went in solemn procession from the palace to Hagia Sophia, where he joined the patriarch and attended the divine liturgy. All the way, he heard acclamations, wishes and stereotypical verses about Jesus’ incarnation from the people and chariot racing factions. Later, there were official receptions and a banquet at the Hall of Nineteen Couches, attended by officials and foreign emissaries. Christmas was considered a good opportunity for promotions and the official coronation of new emperors, which couldn’t take place on any day.

Not even Muslims were excluded from the banquet, and extra care was given so as not to serve them pork.

I used bold text for the customs that are still the norm in Greece, the ones Tserkezis mentions to be familiar. Perhaps several of them are also preserved in other Christian Orthodox countries but I can't speak on their behalf with certainty.

*Although lochozema is not a thing nowadays, the traditional Christmas delicacies like Melomakarona share the same ingredients in their majority.

I’m well aware that fear is an important survival mechanism, but with too much of it, it literally causes us to be less alive.

I’ve stumbled across the term Hikikomori ひきこもり, roughly translated as withdraw.

A better understanding of the term will be :

Recluse who withdraw from all social contact and often don’t leave their houses for years at a time. A government survey found roughly 541,000 (1.57% of the population) but many experts believe the total is much higher as it can take years before they seek help.

Genesis 1

Introduction

Welcome to our first class. Today we are going to be looking at one of the more controversial passages of the bible. I had considered starting in the New Testament (The bits about Jesus and onwards) to avoid this but I would like to work through in order so everyone has a chance to learn about the rules, customs and characters that are going to come up again and again.

In order to do that we need to start at the beginning by working through the Old Testament (The bit before Jesus that Christianity shares to one extent or another with Judaism, though it is named differently in that tradition). Plus Genesis 1 (the start of the Old Testament)  is a cool piece of creation mythology whereas Matthew 1 (The start of the New Testament) is a family lineage of Jesus and so is a little more dry than I would like for my first class.

As some of you may have guessed, the controversy surrounding Genesis 1 is that it describes the creation of the world in a way that is completely at odds with our scientific understanding of these events, a trait it shares with almost all creation mythology to my knowledge. It is usually the main focus of tensions between religious and scientific voices on the subject, though it is far from the only one. For this reason alone it is worth investigating, though in my opinion there are other good reasons for giving it a read.

Before we begin properly I will go over how we reference text from the bible. The bible is divided into 2 sections, the Old and New Testament. Each of these are divided into books, such as the aforementioned Genesis and Matthew. There are 66 books in total, 39 in the Old Testament and 27 in the New Testament. Each book is divided into numbered chapters starting at 1. Each Chapter is divided into verses, also starting at 1. so if we want to reference the 3rd verse of the 1st Chapter of Genesis we say we are referencing Genesis 1 3. If we wanted to reference verses 3 and 4 we would say Genesis 1 3-4, if we want to reference verses that are not joined we list the verses with commas between (eg Genesis 1 3-4, 8, 20). Due to no two books being named the same (though some are numbered such as 1st Kings and 2nd Kings) we do not need to worry about which Testament they are from, but just for reference we could do this by writing OT or NT infront of the book and while I will not be doing so I have seen it done by others.

Analysis

Didn’t I tell you, much more interesting than a geneology. Here we have an account of how God created the universe and everything in it in 6 days. Now I could try and go through the scientific reasoning for why this is impossible, but that is not my purpose here. I will say that I believe that if this is the word of God directly it is figurative and not literal. Could an all powerful being do the things claimed in this chapter, almost certainly, do I believe this is exactly how it was done, no. I will create a separate post on creationism once I have gone over all of the relevant text, but for now I will cover what we can learn from the passage, what is problematic, the values of the passage as a text outside of religion and what parts I would edit out.

Like many good creation stories it begins with an act of creation. God creates the heavens and the earth. From there these are shaped and filled with all the things we know today from the natural world including humanity who he then gives control over the earth. After these tasks are completed it notes that “God saw that it was Good”  or a variation of this phrase (Genesis 1 4, 10, 12, 18, 21, 25, 31). From this an image of God as a builder or craftsperson is developed. He takes his time and works to build a creation that will make him proud to have been responsible for it. This is a good start on the development of the character of God right from the beginning as a being that is caring, patient and diligent. These characteristics will be reinforced time and again as we move forward, and will be joined by a wide variety of other traits from wrathful to forgiving. For the moment though, it is all good.

There is one major problematic element of the story (ignoring the supernatural elements for now) and that is in Genesis 1 27. This is where God creates humanity. In and of itself it is not a problem, but what may be is the reinforcement of a gender binary with man and woman being mentioned specifically as being created as separate and implied to be different. The exact wording will differ from translation to translation, but this remains a common problem in every version I have read. In the modern day we know that there are more than two genders and that genders aren’t binary, even if there are those who disagree (though they are wrong). These ideas are not particularly new either, they did exist in cultures across the world and throughout all of history. Unfortunately they do not appear to be present here. There is nothing in the text that directly states that other genders don’t exist or that any of them are binary, but it does state that at the time of creation we can confirm that there was a man/men and a woman/women . While we will go into them as characters more specifically in future posts, here we know nothing else about them. I bring this problem up as though the text does not claim anything else cannot exist, it is this section and ones like them that are used as justification by conservative religious folk to try and claim that transgender and non binary people do not exist. While they are wrong anyway, I wanted to point out that, at least with this passage, that argument doesn’t hold as much water as they might like to believe.

The value of this passage as a piece of literature is a fascinating subject all of its own. While it is not necessarily as exciting a creation story as many others that involve epic battles and such, I feel it is still an interesting read. This passage uses lots of poetic language. This should not be surprising as this is actually written as a piece of poetry, in contrast to Genesis chapter 2 which is a piece of prose. We don’t receive lots of detailed information, but we do have the words of an ancient poet painting a beautiful picture for us of how they interpret the creation of the world. Now I can tell that this might raise a few eyebrows among those who believe that every word in the bible is the literal word of God, but the text itself tells us that this is not written by God. It quotes him multiple times, so it is possible that God told this story to the writer, but the story is told from a perspective other than that of God. Now it is possible that God is the kind of person who refers to themselves in the third person, but I for one am choosing to believe that this is not the case here. Traditionally Moses is viewed as the author of Genesis, but as with many ancient texts proving this is almost impossible.

Conclusion

So what we have is a nice piece of poetry that could be worded better to avoided giving transphobes ammunition, but aside from that is well enough written and tells us the creation myth of one of the world’s major religions so likely has enough cultural relevance that I see no reason to remove any of it, as even the offending verse says nothing concrete enough for me to excise it and any editing would be to add a couple of words either during the verse or onto the end to be clear about the range of existing genders. An edited version, were I to make one for Genesis 1 27 might read “ 27. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them, though other options were available for gender and the gender binary is a lie”.

It would be much harder to hold a transphobic position if this was the original text, but sadly it is not. Le dehors cosmique, les ténèbres, la nuit, le nocturne viennent du visible, des objets les plus communs, vus par tous, naissent souvent sous nos yeux. 80 fleurs comprend quatre-vingt-un poèmes, le premier vers, Or tous invisiblement thym temps, du poème d'exposition sans titre suivi de quatre-vingts autres poèmes qui portent chacun un nom de fleur en guise de toit et de point de vue sur l'infini. Le lecteur à ce premier vers voit une suite d'un commencement évoqué mais non-dit, l'invisible familier aux sens et à l'intuition de celui qui l'écrit, les tempes où le temps se tient ; tempes concrètes et plus larges que le temps mesuré par lui-même et le thym évoque à la fois la senteur, le goût, la lettre y magique en elle-même, le thym participant autant des paysages grecs à ses yeux, le Péloponnèse où cette plante fleurit, qu'il éveille le thymos qui est l'âme des grecs, le souffle, le chiffre de chaque homme de toutes époques.

Dès ce poème d'ouverture, le lecteur découvre une poésie moderne de l'étendue, les syntagmes, les tropes, les mots, les élisions, les accélérations à travers les mots liés par des tirets figurant les verves et les positions d'actions, les articles définis ici bien que non écrits, le vers allégé autant qu'il se peut de toutes graminées, grammaires et syntaxes inutiles, forme poétique qui n'est pas sans évoquer certaines locutions et rythmes, Sprung rhythm de Gerard Manley Hopkins dans ses sonnets terribles, la langue trouvée par Andrea Zanzotto dès la Beauté, la parataxe, le monde écrit par les poètes auxquels songent nombre de penseurs - ainsi Walter Benjamin qui rêve de cueillir autour de lui des fragments de réalité échoués dans le présent dont il trouve la vie immergée dans des temps lointains, le philosophe alors avec son panier récoltant ces fragments afin de trouver une forme concrète de nouvelle continuité qui affranchisse l'humanité, apte à lui faire passer un cap qualitatif que les sophistes et les penseurs messianiques ne cessent de tous temps de chercher, de peser, l'homme étant celui toujours sur le point de trouver, d'imager ces formes de réalité.

Où il apprend combien toute sa vie et à travers toutes ses inventions formelles, Zukofsky a créé une forme de discontinuité nouvelle qui tranche avec la Comédie de Dante, écrite il y a plus de sept cent ans, où l'idéologie jure avec la spontanéité du verbe venu d'Arnaut Daniel, des troubadours... Saturday night I hit a big pothole and a few miles later my tire was completely flat and actually had holes big enough to stick a few fingers through. I took it to a tire repair shop and the rim was bent as a result of the tire going flat. They've found a replacement rim, but it doesn't match the other 3 on the car.. I would like all matching rims, but a complete set with tires is about $800. Would something like this be covered by auto insurance? The cost of the mismatched replacement rim and 2 new tires is $350, my comprehensive deductible is $500, but I would pay the $500 if insurance covered 4 MATCHING rims.. Lots of info, sorry! My car was parked on the street and hit during the night. I drove the car to the repair place the following morning and the airbag deployed on the way there. (Stupid, I know, I wasn't thinking). My insurance company, GEICO is insisting that the damage is not consistent with a hit and run accident. They have taken recorded statements from me and my boyfriend. They have contracted an independent accident reconstructionist to read the airbag deployment. The reconstructionist originally told me that he was unable to retrieve the data, but the insurance company is now telling me that he was able to get a partial reading. And that it shows that the airbag deployed as a result of impact. The airbag did not actually fully deploy. There is no powder or injury to me to justify a complete deployment. Does anybody know if they have the right to deny my claim based on suspicion? They keep trying to make me say that my boyfriend was driving the car, which he wasn't. We were in the house together all night. Also: car was in previous fire; severe damage to front of car, all repaired. accident happened in CA, full coverage policy written in GA I know its a lot of info. Someone recently hit my car while it was parked across the street from my house. I almost thought it was a hit and run till I found their business card on my windsheild. I called her and she said she'd rather not go through her insurance but pay me directly for the damage to my car. I have been in accidents where I was hit but usually the other person just gives me their insurance info and I call them and get my car fixed fast, no problems. So I was already a little hesitant about agreeing to this, but I figured as long as it gets fixed it should be alright. Right off she said, Oh thats really high,(almost a 1000) and I reminded her that the damage is pretty severe, she backed into my rear passenger door, now entirely dented and scratched up. Accident was her fault. She rear ended a truck. The truck wasnt hurt at all but the car was totaled pretty much. Ticket was failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. What is a rough estimate of how much insurance will go up for her?
