The mighty peaks of DR Congos #virunganationalpark softly piercing through the evening's fog. When on an expedition, I usually go on my own for a short walk around the camp every day after dinner. When hiking all day, so much focus is put on finding trails, climbing and walking, you have to be fast and efficient with your body's strength and capacity. Those evening walks are slow in comparison. Without the pressure of reaching the next camps, there's finally time to stop after every other step and look around. The thumbleweed of the Boophone.

The Boophone haemanthoides is a summer-flowering geophyte growing up to 500 mm tall. It looks very much like a primitive plant with at least two thirds of its massive scaly bulb visible above ground. Some of the largest bulbs can be more than a hundred years old!
