Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meet Wolf Episode 1 Review:

First and foremost: AHHHHHHHH!!!! We are back after 15 years of waiting!! The intro was fantastic for those who read Wolf and Parchment. Didn’t think I’d see that character so soon yet here we are and got to say I love the direction they took there.

Basically the first episode plays out mostly the same as the original anime did with a few minor exceptions. One of which is Yarei instead of the Anime Original Chloe as Lawrence’s business friend from the village. The other being that intro of course where (clearly) Holo is telling her story to someone of the tale we are embarking on.

The music was phenomenal. Kevin Penkin you are a Musical Treasure!! The art was amazing and I am so looking forward to the next episode.

Rating: 🌾 🌾 🌾 🌾 🌾 out 5 Wheat.

Spice and Wolf Episode 1: The Wisewolf

To be brutally honest, if I set upon sharing thoughts here, you'll never hear the end of it. The short version of my post for Spice and Wolf is this- while not perfect, this debut episode is full of passion. Passion (and competition) from chief director Takeo Takashi through his storyboards, passion in the writing to create a wonderful adaptation of a classic light novel, and passion that caters directly to the heart of fans of the series.

Alright, finished all the first episodes for all the anime I decided to pick up this season so here's my tier list for them.

S-Tier (I already read the source material)

Dungeon Meshi (continued from last season): Hell yeah, more Dungeon Meshi!

Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets The Wise Wolf: Hell yeah, more cute wolf girls HARDCORE ECONOMICS!

Whisper Me A Love Song: MY BABIES ARE FINALLY ANIMATED! I LUV THEM SO MUCH, IMMA DIE!

A-Tier (sold on it in 1 episode)

Girls Band Cry: Some high quality CGI animation AND anime girls who love nonstop flipping the bird? sign me up!

B-Tier (strong start but I need a few more episodes to lock it in)

The Many Sides of Voice Actor Radio: gyaru x plain girl is always either a strong hit or complete miss for me but I'm def interest in more.

Yuru Camp 3: Still some strong camping propaganda but it def feels like some of the charm was lost in the studio switch.

C-Tier (rough start but has some promise)

The Fable: Def feels like it'll be more drama then comedy but I'm interested in seeing more of Like A Dragon the anime. yuru

D-Tier (I'll stick it out but they're on thin ice)

F-Tier (lol, no.)

DNF (Could be good, could be bad, but my brainworms stopped me from finishing episode 1)

Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again: The "grandma/grandpa got bishoujo/bishounen-ed and now I want to fuck them" joke already got old 10 minutes in…

*Train To The End Of The World - I didn’t expect what I experienced in the 1st ep. If you want a fun, unique story. Watch this. The episode felt like it was 5 minutes long. It was fun af.

Cassandra (scoffing): We’ll see. The air here is killer.

Wolfgang (arriving with Kiernan and Morgan): That’s how it is in the Harbor. Wolfgang, at your service.

Haven (shaking his hand): Wes’s new friend.

Wes: A little bit of a stretch, but sure.

Wolf: This is Morgan, who technically doesn’t do introductions, and my boyfriend, Kiernan.

Cassandra: Your boss must really like you, Wolf. Giving you a one-hour shift and all.

Wolf (ignoring her): Kiernan and I are gonna go dance. You’re welcome to join us.

Scene 5 - Dew Point, Point Promise, Evergreen Harbor

Morgan: So, Wolf was saying…you're new to Windenburg, right?

Wes: Yeah, me and Haven. We're in a home for the time being.

Morgan: Wow, that sucks. Must be hard for you.

Wes (thinking to himself): God, she feels bad for me, doesn’t she? I can see it in her eyes. A damn charity case.

Wes: There's a rumor going around school…is it true that you sell drugs?

Morgan: Someone's forward.

Wes: No point in beating around the bush.

Morgan: Why? You trying to buy some?

Wes: Do you?

Morgan: There's no way I'm telling you that.

Wes: I mean, you've got the perfect face for it. No one would suspect you—

Morgan: I can't tell if that's supposed to be a compliment or not.

Wes: —but I get my weed elsewhere. I'm just curious.

Morgan: Don't hold your breath.

Wes: Why deal? You're, what, 16? 17?

Morgan (murmuring): Almost 18.

Wes: Same here. That shit could ruin your life. Besides, the Target in Del Sol pays well—I could put in a good word for you.

Morgan: Have you ever been to San Myshuno? Spent some time in the Spice Market? Because I feel like you wouldn’t be interrogating me like this if you had.

Wes: Spent 2 years on the streets there.

Morgan: Oh.

You like Spice and Wolf? Have you watched the remake yet?

Like? No. I LOVE Spice and Wolf. I was reading scanlations of it before they made into an anime. Even the anime I originally watched with fan subs (the dub voices are fairly close imo, and I have no preference sub vs dub aside from how how Holo is pronounced closer to Horo in the sub).

Can I also rave for a moment about the OP's for both Season 1 and 2?!?!?! They are comfort songs of mine when I'm just having an off day (like yesterday where I became emotionally overwhelmed and just the little things built up until the camels back snapped in two).

Oh, and the Season 1 ending is just so fun! I still sing along with it lol

Ishura was going to be a bit of a challenging anime to get right. Its well-woven and descriptive action in the novel would be difficult for a rough production to cover. The constant shift of perspectives and the slow pace at the beginning would likely make it hard to adapt. Now, we'll have to wait to see the latter part, but as for the action? I think they did a pretty damn good job.

I'm literally in school for computer animation, so I have nothing against CG, but in anime, they tend to be admittedly hit or miss. Even from the trailer, especially in specific cases like Shalk (skeleton bro), I could tell it was going to be pretty good. However, a lot of the shots of the golem in the PVs, I wasn't an extremely huge fan of, but they really do blend in a lot better than I expected in the actual episode.

I think it's mostly because of the way they did it; our 2D characters kinda look shiny themselves, they sorta have a 3D shading look to them. While opinions on this will be mixed, I think it was smart to seemingly work the other way around—getting the characters to blend in with the 3D models. It really does allow the show to have a more cohesive look, and I believe the 3D models/animation will save them from production issues later on.

I actually enjoyed this premiere significantly more than its light novel counterpart. I feel like it gave me a better liking to Sojirou, who, in my opinion, had the weakest introduction chapter by far. Seeing his excellent voice acting by Yuuki Kaji and all the mannerisms executed so well really sell his 'I don't really give a shit' attitude that greatly infuriates Yuno. I'm very excited to see more.

It would be very curious to see if the action can keep up. The episode was directly boarded by the chief director, Takeo Takahashi who did an amazing job here, but I'm doubtful that he will return just because he has Spice and Wolf to manage April of this year. So we'll have to see how the action flow without him. I'm eager to know the episode count because there's no way they can keep up with this one-episode-per-introduction pace unless it's a 2-cour series. Either way, I enjoyed the debut episode a lot as a light novel reader, and I'll be here next week for more.

3. Last Song: I was listening to a heavy metal cover of Belle from Beauty and the Beast

4. Last Movie: The Muppet Christmas Carol. I had too much work to watch any movies after Christmas.

5. Currently Reading: The Husky and his White Cat Shizun. I finished the first book from 7seas and immediately leaped into a fan translation that a friend gave me. I am enjoying it immensely.

6. Currently Watching: Very very slowly watching Spice and Wolf, I'm 8/12 episodes in.

7. Currently Consuming: Some slightly burned texas toast and tomato soup.

I've got an excel spreadsheet with these and others that I want to watch, but haven't yet, totaling 126 lmao As of right now (1/2023) I have no desire to watch Attack on Titan, One Piece, or Naruto (again, please don't come for me and PLEASE don't try to convince me), but I welcome any other recommendations and/or discussions/chats about any I listed!

Finished episode 1 of Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf

Welp, if there were any doubts about how much this adaptation would cover, Passione straight up dropping in a scene with Holo and Myuri within the first few seconds might be the most ballsy statement of "all of it" I've ever seen.

Already a strong adaptation as well. It's veering much closer to the LNs than the original did (Yarei actually making his first anime debut since he was straight up replaced with the anime original character of Chloe).

I can def see this possibly replacing the first anime as the go to adaptation to pick up if it covers everything the first missed.

My only actual complaint is that the OP is nowhere as good as Tabi no Tochuu but like that's kinda expected given that Tabi no Tochuu is one of the all time greats.

Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf episodes 1-3

This was great fun to watch, they've also clearly taken great care with making the world seem beautiful in a very natural way. The chemistry between Lawrence and Holo is just brilliant. I feel like the story will be arcs of them travelling and making discoveries, such as the situation with the silver coins here. I suspect that Holo's nature as the wolf will become a plot focus eventually and raise conflict with the church. I'm looking forward to more.
