I'm not trying to be contrary but I'm genuinely curious why you think Jack would be jealous of Claire rather than follow her around like a lost puppy.
I mean, he might try to be friends at first. Jack likes to style himself as a polite, young fellow, after all. Plus, he appears to be uncomfortable about Jimmy Novak, if you go by the script outlines. There'd be guilt mixed up with everything, too. He has his dad because she lost hers. Claire is someone he'd instantly want to protect.
But Claire is mean as a fuckin' snake, and Jack's feelings aren't iron-clad. He also can tend to get snipey and sassy when pressed, especially if he thinks Claire is doing something dangerous.
For her part, Claire doesn't want to be protected. She wants to show off and be the superior hunter, which of course gets her into trouble.
And well. Jack's never really had to share Cas before. Not like that. I don't know if he'll understand at first why he's so uncomfortable, but he definitely will be.
///
Maybe you're right that you'd need one of those serpent tongues around to voice the most uncharitable interpretations of events, in true SPN fashion. This way, Jack's fears and jealousy can get riled up more properly (Claire, on the other hand, doesn't need any help getting riled up).
Instead of a demon or villain of the week to be the mouthpiece, I'd choose Dark Kaia. I mean, Dark Kaia is ruthless and cunning and blunt and cruel...and she tried to skewer Claire. Plus...
REGULAR KAIA IN HER DEBUT: I mean, you picked the wrong bait. I'm not the kind of girl folks come for. In this world, I don't even rank a milk carton. No one is gonna come for me. I'm not white, rich, blonde. No one's gonna fight for me. I don't matter.
Still, regular Kaia fell in love with Claire, even though she was milk-carton gorgeous. But Dark Kaia tried to kill Claire, because Claire was the thing taking her twin from her.
We also understand that Dark Kaia is jealous of Kaia for even having a Claire in the first place, just like she admits to being jealous of her world.
In 15x12, Dark Kaia too sees a beautiful, Claire-like face in a magazine and angrily shoves it across the table. Like regular Kaia, she seems to have hang-ups about the sort of person society seems to "instantly care about."
All that to say, she'd totally be the voice in Jack's ear pointing out the contrasts between how Claire is treated versus how Jack is treated. Look how soft they all are on Claire, how precious she is, how they protect her, etc. etc.
Sorry, that wasn't really your question, was it. The real answer is...because I like the flavor.
Claire is jealous because TFW gives Jack more responsibility; Jack is jealous because they give her less.
It's spicy.
ADDENDUM: If she'd been an active player in the plot, Claire would absolutely volunteer to "Kill Jack Kline...so Cas, Dean, and Sam don't have to." Dark Kaia would agree, and regular Kaia would be looking for a way to save him. If Jack killed Claire, that might be the thing that motivates Cas to act more visibly out of character, similar to how Mary's death pushed Sam and Dean to the brink.

supernatural s11e12 don't you forget about me (w. nancy won)
hookman redux? oh no it's just what's her face with the good hair and a sword. i don't remember jody's other girl *at all*. she also does not look remotely like a teenager. i know it's hard with casting young people. anyway, very cute to see jody so happy and proud.
Tumblr media
why is there so much weird food content in this episode, please 😭 sam and dean are so bored at home, they should be cooking more. we know they can do it! (dean, you know how happy you could make sam with something simple like this, roast chicken and mashed potatoes and green beans is dead easy and tasty and nutritious!)
Tumblr media
JODY This is according to the - HEY! [JODY looks at ALEX, who has tried to sneak her wine glass away.] Put it back! [ALEX puts the wine glass back.] JODY … neighborhood crime blogs that Claire has been reading. CLAIRE They're eye-witness accounts. SAM Well, we've hunted on less.
jody's face had me cackling. sam no longer the favorite son 😒
okay so. kathryn newton who plays claire is 19 and supposed to be... 19! and she looks 19. (have i mentioned how much i love her hair?) and katherine ramdeen who plays alex is 25-6 and is supposed to be... 18. sitting next to each other and bickering, it's kind of stark. also kind of funny that they mention barely recognizing her twice. not the only one. was thinking she was recast maybe, but nope
ALEX Claire did catch a werewolf. Oh right! Turned out to be a German shepherd with rabies. JODY And before that was the vampire. Councilwoman into erotic cosplay. I didn't know what cosplay was before that. Super embarrassing for the whole force. DEAN Wow. You've been busy.
i feel bad for claire but this is pretty great
CLAIRE Real life? Okay. Yeah, sure. Let's get real. You and Henry set on a weekend yet? ALEX What? CLAIRE When you sneaking off to Jody's cabin to screw yourself silly? DEAN Ohhh. Here we go.
getting her revenge, as is the sibling way.
Tumblr media
honestly, i'm eating this up. sam and dean could use some normal loving family dysfunction for once
JODY Hey, if we can't talk about it we shouldn't be doing it, right? Right? [SAM stutters.] DEAN What?
jody looking to the boys for backup and they're completely falling down on the job 😔 this is also weirdly topical because i've been prepping my 10 year old with information about puberty and basics of sex ed lol
Tumblr media Tumblr media
JODY And don't expect the guy, as much as I love Henry, to always show up packing. (To SAM and DEAN) Am I right? [SAM looks down at his plate and takes another bite to avoid answering. Dean stares at her blankly.] DEAN What? JODY Seriously?
useless! :p
i am reveling (obviously) in the domestic awkward bullshit.
Tumblr media
JODY And but even there, I feel like I should be teaching her about boyfriends, and relationships, you know, stuff a mom would teach her. DEAN Sammy and I could've benefited from a little of that.
Tumblr media
it's fine, i'm fine. hey maybe jody can straighten dean out and get him to talk to sam about amara. they help with the kids, she can help the bigger kids :p
Tumblr media
CLAIRE Maybe it's time I just head out on my own. And be a full-fledged hunter. SAM Claire. I absolutely understand the need to hunt. Believe me. I do. But the monsters are always going to be there. On and on. Forever. But a chance at a family? At a home? School? That won't be.
probably rationing the use but i think this could have done with the mushy music. feeling for claire and sam.
also that's a huge bedroom
dean trying to be stern and lecture claire and give alex's boyfriend the stink eye, silly :p
ALEX You should know… I've done some really bad things. Hurt people. I should've told you before. HENRY Everybody's done stuff they're ashamed of. I mean, there was this one kid we all tortured in middle school, I-I can't even think about it. Alex! Hey. I don't care. Whatever it is you did, I don't. Okay?
very "this is the skin of a killer, bella"
jesus bad guy is beating the shit out of jody. very effective in how they shot/edited it
LOL aaand the boyfriend is a vampire, of course. didn't see the, i tried to help you out from a bad man but you took me back to your vampire nest and got turned, story. but made sure to vanquish any sympathy we might have had for the dude after saying he turned a high school kid into a vampire just to ruin her life as revenge
good old sibling bonding over killin vampires, a classic
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
adorable and always good to have more data that sam doesn't just eat salad :P
hey it's music reminding me of princess bride, i wonder if it's the same music as last time that reminded me of princess bride. that was a while ago (8x06 and 8x14 [which i included a clip of the music, dean setting up his room in the bunker with family pictures etc]). after comparing, the beginning is sorta similar but then it sort of mashes up into something else
DEAN You gonna be alright now that you're outnumbered again? JODY Ah, as long as everyone wears a condom, we'll be fine. DEAN I want that bumper sticker.
true that. told my 10 year old that it's important to know about sex and how babies get made because we don't want any surprise babies running around and the look he gave me: 😵‍💫
i think a lot of it is jody/kim rhodes but the katherine/kathryns also did great making the whole family dynamic with sam and dean work - and the writing! like hey you all can still do a good monster of the week and have really nice, touching and funny moments with the side characters - two episodes in a row! and i didn't even get disgruntled over amara drama once this episode woot woot

I survived Buffy and Faith. (BtVS)
I survived Dean and Cas. (SPN)
I survived Olivia and Alex. (SVU)
I survived Sherlock and Watson. (Sherlock)
I survived Bucky and Steve, AND Sam and Steve, AND Bucky and Sam. (MCU)
I survived Clark and Lexa (t100).
I am currently surviving Will and Mike, Steve and Eddie, AND Nancy and Robin. (Stranger Things)
I have suffered through: queerbaiting; "everyone experiments in college"; queer coded? - they must be the villain!; "the inherent tragedy of gayness" (repression, AIDs, violence, hatred); girl-on-girl male fanservice; "pray the gay away"; and, most personally painful, "bisexuals aren't real, they just need to pick a side". (I mean, I am though?)
I have been fully and irrevocably traumatized by having to watch my beloved queers be buried over & over & over.
I have literally spent three-and-a-half decades in a toxic, abusive relationship with (not so) queer media.
Upon recommendation of multiple queer friends, I (skeptically, cynically, borderline angrily) watched their so-called "GAY PIRATE (affectionate)" comedy, and was gobsmacked.
Our Flag Means Death gave us: well-rounded characters that are 'no-room-for-guessing, even-your-deeply-repressed-insufferable-republican-uncle-can-see-it queer! Multiple queers with disabilities! Neurodivergent queers! A genderqueer pirate so slay I lose my breath every time they are on screen! Sex between mlm not reduced to 1) tittilation or 2) the raunchy punchline of a mean joke! An unapologetic celebration of Found Family! Drag treated with respect, and as a catalyst for openly queer joy! A fabulous gay wedding! And that's not to mention the loving, romantic, complicated, vulnerable, beautiful relationship between the two male protagonists!
I saw it. with my own two eyeballs. for the first time ever. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?
I assumed everyone must be as thrilled, honored, and overjoyed as I am for all the rep, positivity, and LOVE.
I was wrong.
It breaks my queer little heart that so many people on this glorious hellsite are furious, indignant, and quick to cancel the characters, the actors, the writers, and the showrunners for not being spoon-fed perfect queer characters in perfect queer relationships for perfect queer rep in ACTUAL queer media that exists! In canon!
It hurts to be vilified for being a fan who refuses to condemn the show and for loving concerningly imperfect and deeply-flawed queer characters.
I am sorry, but as far as I'm concerned, LOVE WON. We won. Please stop coming into my house (blog) and pissing all over my rainbow parade.

Episode 56: 3.12 Jus in Bello
Justice in war... the code of ethics that judges actions on the battlefield. On the surface, this episode makes us question what is right, cuts off almost every choice Sam and Dean could’ve made, and backs them so far into a corner they’re literally shackled together and shoved in a cage. It was a situation that we won’t find out for most of an entire additional season of the show that was specifically engineered to shove this exact pressure point to see what would happen.
It’s incredibly easy to watch this episode from that surface level and come to the conclusion that Ruby was right, that they should’ve listened to her and done her (morally questionable) spell-- sacrificing an innocent to save everyone’s lives. It’s easy to judge Dean for his refusal to cooperate with that plan without the later proof that he’d been 100% right all along.
But there are cues even within this episode that should at least cast doubt on that interpretation, starting with the title begging us to examine the morality of their choices. This is why I chose that tagline for the weekly graphic: “If that’s how you win wars, then I don’t want to win.”
Because Ruby does present this from the outset as “war.” As a battle that must be won. But it was ALL a manipulation-- at the time it was written, perhaps a more immediate manipulation intended to drive Sam to his original fate to corrupt himself in order to save Dean from going to Hell, but folded into a far larger narrative that would eventually unfold throughout s4 because the writer’s strike made it impossible to complete this arc over the four episodes they had left to work with in s3, and no guarantee that the show would even be picked up for s4 yet.
She berates them at the end of the episode for their failure to save everyone, but seven of those people they mourned were dead before Sam and Dean were even released from their shackles, and the thirty people Ruby’s plan would’ve saved also walked away safe and sound because of Dean’s plan. Only, he didn’t have to murder an innocent to make that happen. Only Lilith’s choices after the fact cost the lives of the three additional people who were killed. That had nothing to do with Dean’s plan being one with a “body count,” as Ruby put it. They were played, their emotions manipulated, and Sam was just a little more compromised morally because of it.
Okay, I think I summed up the entire episode, but I have FEELINGS about this one. It’s the intro to morality and manipulation in SPN, and I love it for that.

not the claire jack beef anon BUT i also think that they would have issues with each other at least at first. like, for one, that we see, cas never gives jack The Talk about claire, or vice versa, so they would absolutely see the other as this second secret family. dean also has a CLEAR favorite between the two, and each kind of lives the other's dream life. jack wants to be safe and loved unconditionally, and a chance at a normal life, like claire has with jody, donna, alex, patience, and wendy. claire is incapable of slowing down and wants the big adventures cas, sam, and dean get into. claire i think has maybe forgiven cas about jimmy, but being dumped in favor of this other kid, the child of the devil (who canonically killed jimmy!) might be a bridge too far and jack doesn't respond all that well to that kind of discomfort and misplace hostility.
I love your conceptualization of the vibes being reminiscent of the Secret Second Family. It also calls to mind an echo of Adam & Kate Milligan, doesn't it, even though it's not an exact one-to-one? It's uncomfortable. I like it.
Yes, Claire and Dean get along like hot jam on fire, and that's going to hurt, no matter how you slice it. Dean adores her.
And yes, you know, now that you mention it... Holy crap. Claire does have the life Jack wants. She's surrounded by a big family that loves her with built-in friends her own age that Get The Life. Absolutely, it would appear perfect to him, at least from the outside. I'm wholly accepting that little gem into my worldview.
And yes, it's a good observation that Jack doesn't respond all that well to that misplaced hostility. He can be very defensive.
And yes, I agree that this whole situation might be a step too far for Claire Powder-keg-Novak, even if she tries to swallow it down. I mean, she still sleeps with Grumpy Cat. In the 12x16 Ladies Drink Free script, Cas still emojis to her, sometimes, even two years out from their parting of ways.
Tumblr media
She left them. Of course, she doesn't care. That's what she's going to tell herself, anyway.
Tumblr media
CLAIRE: Who's Jack? ALEX/JODY (together): Lucifer's son. On Patience, silently reacting to that: Lucifer's son? What the fuck? On Claire-- a bit wounded to realize she knows so little about Sam and Dean these days.

...okay
DEAN Yeah, but you’re better with that whole sensitive verbal massage. SAM There is no sensitive way to tell somebody their soul’s been sucked out by a prehistoric tween!
sam makes good points
SAM Yeah. So the murders started right around the time Len saw Amara, right? Well, the wife of the last victim, Donna Pensky, had this bizarre reaction to hearing her husband ... like she couldn’t care less. It was kind of the way I felt the whole time I was soulless. DEAN Oh, yeah. You were one chilly droid.
lol okay

SAM You know I get like this pit in my stomach any time I think of her. The Darkness. Like we only know the tip of what she is. What she does to people. You know Len was freaked out by her. SAM So that’s how we have to find her. Follow the bodies. DEAN You got a better idea? We could follow the crazy you’ve been seeing.
didn't remember what he was talking about while watching so glossed over it but occurred to me later. c'mon dude. shitty thing to say. blow him off and then call it crazy. meanwhile he's canonically had psychic visions, lucifer contacting him in dreams.. and his difficult history with mental illness from hell trauma. but sure, make a glib comment about his crazy 🤪 read the room!

LGBTQ Supernatural Character Breakdown
Okay so yesterday I posted this lovely screenshot of yet another stupid reddit post about spn that I thought was funny and shrugged off as another reddit dudebro thing. However, then @thehappyearth went and actually read through the thread and reported back with results. The opinions of OP were unsurprising, but they got me thinking. Part of the post reads "I would prefer a neutral show that doesn't aim to include LGBT people in nearly every episode.. its unrealistic unless they are in a location where this holds true..example (California)". Now that's ridiculous for a lot of reasons. 1) Not having LGBT people in a show does not make it "neutral." Cishet is not the default human experience, neither is male, nor white nor able-bodied, etc. 2) It's not "unrealistic" to have LGBT in literally any location in the world. We exist everywhere you go. Yes, certain places tend to attract LGBT adults and families due to their culture, legal protections, history, etc. but it's not like there's something in San Francisco water that just makes people there gay at a higher percentage. I assure you, reddit user, there are LGBTQ people in every single place Sam and Dean have visited in the show. 3) like literally it's just homophobic shut up reddit bros. ANWAY...
But what really got me thinking was the "nearly every episode" comment. Like, dude. What show are you watching? But then I thought...wait how many LGBTQ characters actually are there in Supernatural, so I did a little digging and compiled this list (google sheets) of every LGBTQ character to appear on screen. This doesn't include characters who are only mentioned (although there aren't many to add with that anyway). I looked into some different criteria and I included each character, the number of episodes they appeared in, their first and last episode, how many episodes they appeared in as a confirmed LGBTQ character, their sexuality, if they speak or not, and if they died. I also included a description and notes, and noted which characters were in episodes nominated for GLAAD awards. I also included "ambiguous" characters who I either felt weren't "confirmed" as LGBTQ (like the man who is possibly a gay porn star or the sassy yorkie) but in that realm, or characters where there were bigger issues that make it more complicated (Dean, Crowley, and Rowena).
And then I got curious and made a whole second spreadsheet with a list of all the episodes featuring confirmed LGBTQ characters. I included which characters are featured, if it includes an LGBTQ couple, if it features an LGBTQ storyline important to the plot, if it features a recurring LGBTQ character, if any LGBTQ character dies, if it was nominated for a GLAAD award, and my opinion on if it's homophobic. I only included episodes where a character was confirmed LGBTQ when it aired, however I did include retroactively LGBTQ characters when listing what recurring characters are featured.
Some findings under the cut:
I counted a total of 32 on screen (reasonably) confirmed LGBTQ characters in all of Supernatural (for the purposes of this I have counted Charlie and apocalypse Charlie as separate characters). Now when I say confirmed this is a range from Charlie to characters who had a same sex kiss in the background. There is a chance I have missed some, so if you look through this and notice someone missing, please let me know. (Also sidenote I say LGBTQ but there's no confirmed trans characters as far as I could tell). That's an average of 2.13 per season. There are 9 recurring characters and 23 that only appear once. There are 6 with 3 or more episodes. The only characters that appeared in more than 2 episodes while confirmed as an LGBTQ character are Charlie (apocalypse world and regular) and Chuck. Of all these characters 10 are dead (with three of these presumably resurrected off screen) and 22 survived.
If we break it down by era Kripke had 4 with 0 recurring characters and half and half dead/alive. This is .8 per season average. Gamble had 3 and (at the time) none were recurring and none died. This is 1.5 per season average. Carver had 10 including making Chuck bisexual. Charlie also became a recurring character (then she died). This is 2.5 per season average. Dabb has 15 including Castiel and Claire. This included 7 recurring characters and 8 one offs, and 8 alive and 7 dead. This is 3.75 per season average.
As far as sexualities go, we have 3 (presumably) lesbian characters (2 Charlies and Donna's niece) 3 gay characters (Max Banes and 2 one offs who die) and 2 bisexual characters (Chuck and Noah the gorgon). No single character ever refers to themself by any sexuality as far as I can tell, but Alan J Corbett (Ghostfacers intern) and Conner (from the church) are both referred to as gay by other characters. Everyone else I based on context. All the other characters were unspecified as to their specific sexualities.
In terms of episodes with confirmed LGBTQ characters (so characters who at the time the episode was written were reasonably confirmed as LGBTQ) we have 39 total, a bulk of them being episodes that feature either Chuck or Charlie. That's about 12% of all SPN episodes. If you take out episodes that only include either Chuck or Charlie as the confirmed character you have 20 left which is 6.25% of all SPN episodes.
There are 12 episodes that feature an LGBTQ couple, 3.75% of all episodes. There are, by my count, 9 episodes with an LGBTQ storyline important to the plot or 2.8% of episodes. I know this is more subjective but I included Ghostfacers, Girl with the Dungeons and Dragons Tattoo, LARP and the Real Girl, Sacrifice, The Chitters, Wayward Sisters, Ouroboros, Gimme Shelter, and Despair.
If we break down writers from who has the most episodes with confirmed LGBTQ characters Robbie Thompson comes in the lead with 9, Buckleming next with 6, Bobo and Dabb with 5, Yockey and Glynn with 4, Davy Perez with 3, and Nick Vaught, Nancy Won, Nancy Weiner, Eric Kripke, Jeremy Carver, Sera Gamble, Brett Matthews, and Bed Edlund all having 1. As far as writers who introduced new LGBTQ characters or canonized previously existing ones we have again Robbie Thompson in the lead with 7, Dabb with 6 (although 4 were from co-written episodes), Berens with 4, Yockey and Glynn with 3, Brett Matthews, Davy Perez, Nancy Weiner, Eric Kripke, and Nancy Won all with 2. Gamble and Edlund each have 1 and Buckleming sort of have 1 since they introduced apocalypse world Charlie. All of this is quantity not quality, so keep that in mind.
As far as deaths go, Bobo has the most with 3.5. 3 of those are from Despair where the characters were all (possibly) resurrected and the .5 is for Kaia who later turned out to not actually be dead. Yockey has 2 (both from Ouroboros). Edlund, Glynn, Perez, and Gamble all have 1 and Dabb also has .5 for cowriting Wayward Sisters.
The LGBTQ character who appears in the most episodes is very obviously Castiel who appears in 142 total episodes. Chuck is next with 19 and then Charlie with 7. Chuck has the most episodes as a confirmed LGBTQ character with 12 total and Charlie has 7.
Apologies if any of the math on this is wrong or if I left anyone out. Feel free to let me know and I'll correct the documents.
So really I don't know why I did this but basically yeah I don't know what fantasy world those reddit dudes are living in with LGBT people in nearly every episode (unless he's counting Castiel which...win for the gays I guess?). Nothing about this was particularly surprising but it's interesting to see all these things laid out and play around with the categories. Um...hope you enjoyed this i guess. lol

Nancy Won was also a good solid writer. (she wrote the Jesse and Cesar hunter husbands ep, a Claire n Jody ep (the awkward dinner table scene!) and the Lizzie Borden house one.) Too bad she didn't stay on SPN very long. (But not surprizing.)
yeah, i really liked her! she didn't write a lot so it was hard to get the gage for her trademarks, but those episodes were so refreshing. but yeah, not surprised she didn't last long. i can't imagine what that environment would be for female writers.
