Enjoy the low effort meme that I made. I’m late to the party for the Great Minnesota Flag Redesign Decision™️ but she’s pretty and I love her. Blue really is the best color. 💙🩵🤍

I love the trend of people making new designs for state flags. So many states just adopted half-assed flags that all look the same and don't properly represent the state. Artists are constantly coming up with new flags and I wanted to highlight some of my favorites.
Mississippi's search for a new flag in 2020 seemed to have kicked off the recent trend, and I think they knocked it out of the park with their pick.
Tumblr media
Just last year, a task force in Utah chose this flag from among many great designs. The Utah Senate voted in favor of the new flag bill and it's moving onto the House. It wasn't my favorite flag, but I still like the choice and believe it represents the state well.
Tumblr media
Minnesotans are currently pushing for a new flag to replace their old, controversial flag. There are a few designs being pitched but this one has my vote.
Tumblr media
In my home state of Washington, our current flag is pretty bad but one Washingtonian is leading the charge with his own design. I was skeptical of the design at first but the more I look at it, the more I want to see it fly over the state.
Tumblr media
There are many more proposed state flags out there but these were some of the more notable ones. Most states have very derivative, boring state flags but there seems to be a new flag proposal in a different state every year. We've living in a golden age where artists can promote their flag designs to masses and gain widespread support. I really hope this movement gains steam across the country so each state can have a flag that truly represents their unique culture, history, and identity.

Utah wrapped up a flag redesign effort last month, and this was the result. All the entrants were pretty solid, but I have to say the winner here is quite modern and distinctive. This flag will become the official flag of the state on March 9, 2024.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE LAST FRONTIER!
Tumblr media
"Eight stars of gold on a field of blue
Alaska's flag. May it mean to you
The blue of the sea, the evening sky,
The mountain lakes, and the flow'rs nearby;
The gold of the early sourdough's dreams,
The precious gold of the hills and streams;
The brilliant stars in the northern sky,
The "Bear," the "Dipper," and, shining high,
The great North Star with its steady light,
O'er land and sea a beacon bright.
Alaska's flag to Alaskans dear,
The simple flag of a last frontier."
Alaska : Aw shuck! They did remember my birthday and I'm the luckiest state on the planet! I've always wanted to celebrate!

...Surprising amount of interest in my last post about the contest, so I guess I'll do a follow-up. I was going to do it as a reblog of the first post but people don't ever see those so
The new design is certainly better than the old one, which, like my home-state Pennsylvania flag, is just a flat color with the weird state seal in the middle.
Tumblr media
...The same color, in fact. Ew. Ours at least has the cool black horses so that's...something.
Look. They're state flags. Kind of doesn't matter. If flags in general do. Canada picked a red maple leaf because...it was a thing, whatever. You pick one, you live with it.
I don't want to rag on the finalist. Yes it looks like a hockey team pendant designed by a professional designer. But...I think the guy is certainly a professional designer, and he isn't bad at his job. It is simplistic and stark and isn't a photograph of a dog, so it is kind of boring and whatever. But it's fine. If the people of Minnesota like it, good on them.
I still think the Double Loon one was the best serious choice.
Tumblr media
If Pennsylvania's rich families get inspired to rip Minnesota off and let us design a new flag, it should just be a dollar-green field with the silhouette of one person pointing to NYC, and the silhouette of a another person shrugging.

(seeing so many bad faith interpretations of the argument, y'all are really going to make me do this, okay HERE WE GO)
.................................
What Ed says: "I think last night was a mistake. I'm not ready for... Whatever this is."
What Ed means: "I didn't want last night to happen so soon or under those circumstances. Things are changing rapidly, which makes me feel out of control and scared."
What Stede hears: "I regret sleeping with you. I don't want the sort of relationship that you're after."
.................................
What Stede says: "It was a fine fish. It was... whatever. I was just trying to make you feel good!"
What Stede means: "I only cared about the fish because you cared about it, and I care about you. I liked the fish because it made you happy. Ordinarily, I'm ambivalent about fish."
What Ed hears: "I lied to you. I didn't care about your achievement I was just placating you to get what I wanted."
.................................
What Ed says: "Here's the news: I'm leaving. I got a job on a little fishing boat and I'm leaving. I'm a fisherman now."
What Ed means: "I think I need to be away from you to figure out who I am, because I haven't been able to do that while we're together, and your lifestyle now is the life I'm trying to leave behind."
What Stede hears: "I've made a decision to leave you and have a life without you. I don't value what we have enough to work with you to find a solution, I'd prefer to end it."
.................................
What Stede says: "Oh, Ed. Seriously? You're not a fisherman."
What Stede means: "I think you're using this plan to escape and avoid your problems. It sounds like you're pretending to be someone else. It seems to me like an impulsive decision and I am concerned."
What Ed hears: "I don't support this ambition. I think you're incapable. I don't think you can be different from what you have always been."
.................................
This is the kind of analysis done in therapeutic environments. When I put what they mean, it's not just a rephrasing but a boiling down to the core issue. I could go on to the rest of the dialogue but do you see the continuing ship-in-the-night miscommunication?? It's tripartite:
failing to express one's current emotional reality with the most accurate and clear language, often because that reality is not fully understood to oneself,
misinterpreting the other's language, due to preexisting sensitivities and defensiveness about one's own understanding of the situation,
increasing frustration and sense of personal attack that results from those misinterpretations, which perpetuates and worsens the poor communication.
Importantly, this kind of pattern means you miss the best and most important kernels of communication in an exchange because you're reacting to the more inflammatory parts.
Stede: "This can be whatever we want it to be." (I am willing to make changes to our arrangement so that you're happy). Ed: "I don't even know who I am! Alright? I know I don't want to be a pirate. And you, you're blowing up, you're the toast of the town." (I think we want different things. You're just starting a journey that I've already finished).
With those two bits alone they could've sorted this out. The first is the answer to the second. But they didn't -- couldn't -- latch onto it because all their other baggage was getting in the way.
And I'm being proven correct that this is what is happening, because I have seen next to nothing on here about the above two lines, only reactionary takes of fans also focusing on the inflammatory parts because of their predispositions. You're doing an encore performance of what they're doing.
Point being, there are no bad guys in this scene, just repeated system failure!

My state flag however is LAME. LAME LAME LAME. So dumb!! No women with spears, she has a HAT on a STICK. Not even a cool hat!!!! And are those, I don’t know, saws in the middle? Sleds? They seem to have two handles and a blade, but they also seem to NOT BE USED FOR MURDERING TYRANTS, so what use are they really?!?!
