Did you know that the Gill-Man was originally slated to appear in early drafts of Van Helsing?

He never made it pass the storyboard process. The only image I have found is the one you see above now.

He was intended to be a minor antagonist and obstacle for the heroes. Said to be the gate keeper to Dracula’s castle. Perhaps the Black Lagoon? It was said that he would be slain by Frankenstein’s Monster.

While it would have been great to see the Gill-Man make a appearance on screen, fighting Hugh Jackman no less! I am grateful that he wasn’t included. He wouldn’t have really add anything to the proceedings. Although a fight between Frankenstein’s Monster and the Gill-Man would have been awesome. It’s better that the Gill-Man would be saved for a later entry.

I really admire the design of this iteration of the Creature. I like the additional features, like the tail and whiskers. It sort of invokes this image of Caliban from William Shakespeare’s The Tempest.

And even the Ymir from 20,000 miles to Earth, especially with the crest and way the face is structured.

Anyway, what do you think? Would you have liked to have seen the Gill-Man make a appearance in Van Helsing? Or are you glad it was left behind on the cutting room floor? Sound off your thoughts below!
