The Versatility of Cinnamon Powder: From Kitchen to Medicine Cabinet
Tumblr media
Cinnamon powder may already be a staple in your spice rack but have you ever considered how versatile this incredible spice truly is? Effortlessly switching from savoury to sweet, it is a key aromatic in many of the world's cuisines. But beyond its use in the kitchen, did you know that cinnamon also has some serious health creds? Read on as we take a trip through the world of cinnamon, its origins, uses, and of course its impressive health benefits.
All About Cinnamon
Cinnamon, known for its warm, sweet flavour and comforting scent, is derived from the inner bark of trees from the Cinnamomum family. The bark, once harvested, is dried and curled into what are commonly known as cinnamon sticks. These can be used whole or ground into a fine powder. Where does cinnamon come from? Cinnamon is native to Sri Lanka, formerly known as Ceylon. Not exclusive to Sri Lanka, it is also grown in other countries with a tropical climate, including India, Bangladesh, and Indonesia. The method of harvesting and processing cinnamon can differ slightly from one region to another, and they all have slightly different characteristics. What is true cinnamon? Ceylon cinnamon is also known as true cinnamon. Native to Sri Lanka, this variety is considered to be of higher quality and has a more delicate and complex flavour than the harsher cassia cinnamon. Ceylon cinnamon is lighter in colour and has a finer texture, and its sticks are made up of thin, papery layers that easily crumble into fragments. When you hear the term 'true cinnamon,' it refers to this superior variety from Sri Lanka, the Ceylon cinnamon. What is Dutch cinnamon? Dutch cinnamon is another name for the aforementioned cassia cinnamon. This variant has a sweet yet pungent flavour, which is far less delicate than Ceylon cinnamon. While it shares similar health benefits with the Ceylon variety, Dutch cinnamon has a higher concentration of the compound coumarin, which can be harmful in large quantities. It owes its name to its popularity in Dutch cooking where it adds a distinctive flavour to dishes such as Speculaas cookies and Dutch apple pie. Our organic cinnamon powder is ground from the finest Ceylon cinnamon The historical use of cinnamon The use of cinnamon can be traced back to ancient civilizations. It was revered by the ancient Egyptians, who used it in their embalming process. In the Bible, it is mentioned multiple times as an ingredient in anointing oil. During the Middle Ages, cinnamon was a status symbol in Europe, its cost and scarcity made it a luxury item only the wealthy could afford. The demand for cinnamon was a driving force in world exploration as European explorers sought alternative routes to the spice-producing countries. Spices such as cinnamon played a massive role in the shaping of our culinary, and indeed political, history.
Cooking With Cinnamon
Way more than just the spice in your apple pie, or the welcome scent of your seasonal pumpkin spice latte, cinnamon powder is as useful in savoury dishes as it is in sweet. It finds its way into a surprising number of savoury stews and is quite often that elusive element that you just can't put your finger on. In fact, when used with a gentle touch, most spices can be used as a subtle edge of seasoning rather than a predominant note. Cinnamon in sweet dishes In sweet dishes, the warm, aromatic flavour of cinnamon just screams comfort. Its spicy yet sweet profile makes it a perfect pairing for baked goods such as muffins, cinnamon rolls, and apple pie, adding an element of interest and a note of familiarity. Cinnamon powder can actually be used to create an illusion of sweetness and is often used by diabetics or those wishing to eliminate or cut down on sugar. Whilst not particularly sweet, it seems to have such associations with sugar that we believe the food we are eating is sweet. Try a sprinkle on your porridge or overnight oats in place of sugar. Cinnamon in savoury dishes In savoury dishes, cinnamon adds a complex depth of flavour that is both exotic and comforting. It's commonly used in Middle Eastern and Indian cuisines, adding a warm, spicy note to stews, curries, and meat dishes. Did you know that a pinch of cinnamon can also balance out the acidity in tomato-based dishes? When used sparingly, it harmoniously blends with other spices, enhancing the overall flavour profile of the dish without being overpowering. Cinnamon in drinks Next time you order your morning cappuccino ask for a shake of cinnamon instead of the usual chocolate. Hot chocolate tastes great with a touch of cinnamon too. Its sweet-spicy undertones make cinnamon a popular choice in warm drinks like chai tea or mulled wine. Its comforting aroma makes a cup of hot cinnamon tea the perfect companion on a chilly day. In wellness drinks, cinnamon is often paired with ingredients like turmeric and ginger for a healthful boost.
The Health Benefits of Cinnamon
Cinnamon is also packed with beneficial nutrients that can do wonders for your well-being. From its antioxidant capabilities to its role in regulating blood sugar levels, cinnamon's health benefits are widely acknowledged. Let's look at some of the ways this fragrant spice can contribute to your overall health. Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant Cinnamon earns its super-spice status from its potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Rich in polyphenols and flavonoids, it is one of the top-scoring ingredients on the antioxidant scale. These antioxidants work to neutralize harmful free radicals in the body, thereby reducing oxidative stress. Chronic inflammation, when chronic is thought to be a major contributing factor in numerous health issues from heart disease to autoimmune disorders. The anti-inflammatory properties of cinnamon can help combat this inflammation, reducing the risk of these disorders and promoting overall health. Blood sugar control Cinnamon has been shown to play a significant role in regulating blood sugar levels, making it an ideal spice for people with type 2 diabetes or those who are pre-diabetic. The active compound in cinnamon, cinnamaldehyde, helps to stimulate insulin receptors in cells and improves their ability to use glucose. This process effectively lowers blood sugar levels and reduces the risk of developing complications related to diabetes. This effect on blood glucose levels is not just immediate but can be sustained over time, making it a great addition to a balanced diet aimed at maintaining healthy blood sugar levels. Potential for improving heart health Cinnamon is said to also help normalise levels of triglycerides in the blood, which are a type of fat linked to heart disease and stroke. Studies have also shown that cinnamon can help lower "bad" LDL cholesterol levels while increasing "good" HDL cholesterol levels. This combination of effects on blood sugar, triglycerides, and cholesterol makes it an excellent spice for promoting heart health. Anti-microbial properties Cinnamon has been used as a natural remedy for various infections and illnesses for centuries. This is because it contains compounds with anti-microbial properties, which can help fight off harmful bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Again, this is down to the compound cinnamaldehyde, which has been shown to have powerful anti-bacterial and anti-fungal effects. Contributes to dental health Cinnamon plays a remarkable role in maintaining dental health as well. It's commonly used in many dental care products like toothpaste and mouthwash due to its strong antibacterial properties. The key compound, cinnamaldehyde, aids in combating oral microorganisms that can cause tooth decay and gum disease. Also, its breath-freshening qualities help to combat halitosis, commonly known as bad breath. So, along with a good dental hygiene routine, including cinnamon in your diet could contribute to a healthier and happier smile!
How to Incorporate More Cinnamon into Your Diet
Here are some creative and tasty ways to incorporate more cinnamon into your daily meals: Sprinkle on your breakfast: Add a dash of cinnamon to your morning oatmeal, yoghurt, or smoothies for a flavour boost. Spice up your coffee: Mix a little cinnamon into your coffee grounds before brewing for a delicious and aromatic twist. Season your fruits: Dust some cinnamon onto fresh fruits like apples or bananas for a healthy and satisfying snack. Revamp your baked goods: Add cinnamon to muffins, breads, cookies, or pancakes to enhance their flavour. Enhance savoury dishes: Cinnamon can also be used in savoury dishes such as curries, roasted vegetables, or stews. Stir into hot drinks: Mix cinnamon into hot chocolate or herbal teas for a soothing beverage. Boost your protein shake: Add a pinch of cinnamon to your post-workout protein shake for additional health benefits. Precautions when using cinnamon in the diet While cinnamon offers numerous health benefits, certain precautions should be taken when incorporating it into your diet. Firstly, cinnamon contains coumarin, a natural substance that can cause liver damage if consumed in large amounts. This is especially true for Cassia cinnamon, which has higher coumarin levels than the Ceylon variety. Additionally, some people may experience allergic reactions to cinnamon, such as skin irritation, mouth sores, or respiratory symptoms. Also, due to its effects on blood sugar, individuals with diabetes should monitor their blood sugar levels closely when consuming cinnamon. Lastly, pregnant women are advised to consume cinnamon in moderation as excessive intake can lead to certain complications. As always, it's recommended to consult with a healthcare professional before making significant changes to your diet. We have seen that cinnamon, with its rich history, culinary versatility in both sweet and savoury dishes, potential health benefits, and aromatic allure, truly embodies a spice that adds value far beyond the simple enhancement of flavour. Vegetable Powder - Going Beyond Greens
Tumblr media
Vegetable powder is often overlooked in the search for superfood supplements, yet is a valuable addition to your superfood store cupboard. In the nutrition stakes, greens powder generally gets all the glory. Yet, whilst it may be true that green leafy veg are some of the most nutrient dense foods on the planet, the overall goal of nutrition is one of variety, and vegetable powder has a lot of good things to offer.
The power of veggie powder
Veggie powders are an excellent way to boost the nutrient content of your diet, especially if this is one area in which your diet is lacking. Despite increased nutritional knowledge, and the increase of interest in all things plant-based, many people do not get enough vegetables in their daily diet. Vegetable powder is made of dehydrated vegetables that have been ground to a fine powder. They have a much longer shelf life than fresh produce, and retain their nutrient value for longer too. They take up less space and are also easy and convenient to use. Not only do they make a great addition to smoothies, but are also an excellent way of sneaking extra vegetable goodness into your cooking. Add to soups and stews, dips and dressings, or even cakes and breads. Other than our popular greens powders we have two kinds of vegetable powder; beetroot, and carrot. Nutrients in Greens Green leafy vegetables such as kale, spinach, and even broccoli, all share a basic nutritional profile although each does have it's own special brand of magic. These plants are all rich in the life essence chlorophyll and abundant in minerals; especially calcium, iron and sulphur. They are also excellent sources of vitamins C, and K, and are chock-full of anti inflammatory antioxidants. Greens support bone health, provide major antioxidant support, help to lower cholesterol, and have anti-cancer properties. Nutrients in Carrots Carrots are well known for their starring role in promoting eye health. Rich in beta-carotene, as well as antioxidant lycopene and lutein, they help us to maintain good eyesight. But there is more to carrots than eye health. High in the insoluble fibre pectin, that is also abundant in apples. It helps to regulate blood sugar levels by slowing down digestion and decreasing the uptake of sugars. It also decreases the absorption of cholesterol so is effective in helping to lower total cholesterol levels. A good source of the mineral potassium, which is essential for the fluid balance within cells, carrots can also help to regulate blood pressure. Carrots also contain silicon, for healthy skin and nails. Nutrients in Beetroot Beetroot contains a unique group of antioxidants known as betacyanins. Responsible for their deep purple colour, these protective pigments offer support to the liver, help to improve circulation, and purify the blood. Not just an old wives tale! Along with iron, that feeds the red blood cells with oxygen, the antioxidants in beetroot detoxify the liver and purify the blood by promoting excretion of toxins. Also rich in potassium, beetroot is highly effective at lowering blood pressure. More Benefits of Vegetable Powders Carrot powder and beetroot powder have another advantage over greens powder. They add sweetness. Not sugar-rush sweetness, but the sweet taste that is often needed to round out flavours and make food more palatable. Green smoothies aside, a spoonful of carrot powder will round out any residual bitterness in a tomato sauce way better than a pinch or two of sugar. Mix beetroot powder into cacao powder to add sweetness without sugar or sweeteners. This blend has tons of uses, but try dusting it over popcorn. It's great! Have you explored our range of store cupboard superfoods? Available to buy in bulk online now! Boost Nutrients vegetable powders are all made from 100% organic Australian grown produce. . I’ve had other mushroom superfood powders and blends, but this is my first time to try lion’s mane. With my upcoming weight loss surgery, I wanted to use products that would benefit my recovery and general health during pre-op and post-op liquid diet phases. Let’s face it: water, broth, and sugar-free gelatin are barely good enough for hydration! I need immune boosting and gut health ingredients! I teamed up with @fromthereserve and they have AMAZING superfood powders for every aspect of maintaining a healthy body. Importing these into my prep and recovery are a far better option than just water and juice. I’m starting day one of two pre-op liquid diet with Organic Lion’s Mane superfood powder in my coffee. This powder almost has a mocha aroma when you open the package. I used about one teaspoon and used my handy little froth stick to whisk it into my hot coffee. The package says the flavor has been associated with crab or lobster, but I’m not getting that at all. I taste a slight earthiness, but it has a mild sweetness, and it seems to give a silky texture to my coffee. I like it! This powder can be blended into so many things: soups, yogurt, smoothies, hot cereal or just into milk or juice. Some health benefits include: gut health, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, brain and heart health, immunity booster, and mood balance. All extremely beneficial for me since it will be a challenge to get all of my nutrients in the first few weeks following my surgery. This will be a daily use! I’ll be using a couple more products today from this brand so, watch for the reviews! Meanwhile, check them out to see all the healthy goodies they offer. #lionsmane #lionsmanemushroom #adaptogens #gutheealth #lionsmanereview #superfood #superfoodpowder #mushroomsuperfood #fromthereserve https://www.instagram.com/p/CcLfoIWJvnE/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

What Does Protein Powder Do?
Tumblr media
Protein powders are a nutritional supplement, once only favoured by bodybuilders and gym goers. But what does protein powder actually do? And why do so many people now include it as part of their daily regime?
Types of protein powder
Traditionally, protein powders were made from animal sources. They were made either from components of cows milk (whey or casein) or from egg white derivatives. Both of which are excellent sources of complete protein. Before they were taken up by the bodybuilding community, they would have been (and still are) widely used in hospital and healthcare settings as a nutritional supplement for those unable to eat, or that needed an extra boost. Later arrivals on the scene were the plant-based protein powders. Also sources of complete protein, these are derived from plants such as peas, or hemp.
Why take protein powder?
Why take protein powder? Surely we can get protein from the food we eat? For a start, protein powder can be pretty handy. It has a long shelf life, mixes into an easy to drink shake, and is fairly portable. It can also be added to cooking and baking for a bit of a protein boost. But why would we need a protein boost in the first place?
Protein in the body
Most of us are well aware that the body needs protein. A vital component of bone, muscle, and skin, protein is crucial to all our life processes at the cellular level. Without the amino acids that are the building blocks of protein we can barely survive; let alone thrive. There are 9 amino acids that we need to intake from food. Foods that contain all nine amino acids are known as complete proteins. Most animal sources of protein are complete, and we once believed that without these foods that our diet was somehow lacking. We now understand that we can obtain our full quota of amino acids from a range of food sources; including plants. How much protein do we need? Roughly speaking, between 10 to 35% of your calories should come from protein, depending on your level of activity. For the average diet of 2000kcal a day this is somewhere between 50 and 175g protein. The average, fairly sedentary adult generally aims for about 50g; a goal that is easily achievable on a diet that includes animal proteins. A bit of milk, an egg, plus a portion of fish or meat and you are pretty much there. On a plant based diet, still aiming for 50g, that looks like a cup of lentils, a cup of quinoa and several large handfuls of nuts. Also fairly doable. But what if you need to aim higher? Long story short, it is a lot easier to maximise your protein intake with an animal based diet than it is with a plant based one. And what about those all essential amino acids? You need a really varied range of plant proteins to ensure an adequate intake. In all likelihood, the surge in popularity of protein powders has come with increased interest (and uptake) of a plant-based diet.
Protein in plants
All plants contain protein in varying amounts, even the ones we don't think of as protein foods. Yet only a handful are sources of complete protein; most are missing an amino acid or two. So not only is the challenge to get enough grams of protein, but also to get an adequate supply of all nine amino acids. For many people this is not an issue an at all, and with a wide range of plant foods they cover these needs easily. But not everyone. Why you might need to boost your protein on a plant based diet - For active gym goers, to aid recovery and repair muscle fibre - To replenish energy levels on the go - To help stave off hunger and promote weight loss - When you aren't eating proper meals Plant based protein powder Plant based protein powder offers an efficient form of protein delivery. A single scoop offers about 25g of protein, with all nine essential amino acids. Blended up into a shake, with water or a non-dairy milk, it is possibly the simplest way to meet your protein needs. The two most common types are made from isolated pea protein or hemp seed. Both are sources of complete protein, yet hemp has a whole host of extra nutritional benefits to offer. Take a look at our hugely popular organic hemp protein powder. Superfood powders are a convenient way to harness the exceptional nutritional power of superfoods. Discover just how superfood powders can help you to reach your nutritional goals, or if you need a nutrition primer our in depth article on superfoods has got you covered.
