Some cars have a very loyal following. Mustangs, for example, are owned by people who really like Mustangs. You might not think that this kind of loyalty is unusual if you also own a Mustang. Consider the following: does Aunt Ethel get super frothy on the internet about her Hyundai Elantra?
You can find groups of folks for any car, thanks to the almighty oddball-collecting power of the internet. Only something special will produce the real perverts. Real perverts like my neighbour, who only drives Saturns. Hold on, my phone is ringing.
"Not just any Saturns," he wants me to add, because he has somehow sensed that I am talking about His Brand and wishes for me not to impugn his reputation with the Saturn fanboy squad, "only the real ones. No Ions."
In case you are unfamiliar, Saturn was a sub-brand created by GM to take the fight to the imports. Rather than make their existing cars better, they instead spent billions of dollars producing an entirely new series of cars that then competed with those cars. They were made out of beige plastic, had zingy four-banger engines, didn't immediately fall apart, and were therefore just different enough to give their owners a superiority complex. Uniqueness plus smugness: a winning combination for conspicuous consumption. If you own one Saturn, statistically you actually have seventeen. People got rid of their first Saturn, went back to the dealership, and bought an identical car when it was time to upgrade.
So what happened to Saturn? Well, they got boring. General Motors came back and demanded that they instead build the same car as everyone else, but with a different logo and fenders on it. Save costs by using all the same cheap-ass parts. Perhaps you are familiar with this technique from all the other cars that GM failed to defeat the import menace with. As soon as this happened, all the uniqueness came right out of the brand, and the frothing-at-the-mouth loyalists instead hoarded even more Golden Age econoboxes.
"Stop typing about the Ion so loudly," now barks Ted, who I think worked for the government at some point. He then went into a tirade about how it was actually the sub-prime housing crisis that destroyed Saturn, and how if only everyone would only use Saturns as currency, this could all have been avoided, but conveniently that model of economic theory would make Ted the Saturn Guy the new king of the world, so I hung up. I'd heard this theory presented many times on CNBC and I recommend you not give it any credence, either. Still, to be on the safe side, I think I should probably buy two or three SC2s.

1969 Shelby Mustang GT500 Fastback
1969 was, effectively, the final year for the Shelby Mustang. By now assembly had shifted in Michigan from California where it was contracted out to A.O. Smith Corporation. Smith, an established Motor City contractor, had brought a level of serious manufacturing skill, supplier management, procedure and standards never seen at Shelby’s facility where LAX met the vibrant (and sometimes extreme) subculture of Venice, California.
Now largely designed and specified by Ford staffers, the 1969 Shelby Mustang was drastically different visually from the standard Mustangs, with a completely different nose and grille, a wide rectangular opening with blacked out grille flanked by 7” headlights and with Shelby’s characteristic driving lights now smaller rectangular pieces below the attractive, but largely ineffective, bumper. The special Shelby hood had five ducts, three NACA-style surface ducts replaced the complicated but entertaining shaker hoods of years gone by to supply cold air directly to the engine air intake and two extractors at the back of the hood relieving underhood pressure and exhausting heated air in front of the windshield.
A surface duct behind the headlights and a scoop behind the door and in front of the rear wheel arch that was ducted to the rear brakes continued the performance theme. The rear panel was completely different from the Mustang, housing a set of 1965 Thunderbird sequential taillights with the rear license plate placed between them and including a small ducktail spoiler. The area under the bumper where standard Mustangs carried their license plate contained two rectangular outlets for the Shelby’s dual exhaust system. Standard wheels were unique 5-spoke Mag Stars with alloy centers and chrome steel rims.
Under the hood lay the 428 Cobra Jet which had powered the ’68 Shelby GT500KR. Both Ford and Shelby recognized the superiority of the high performance CJ and made it the standard engine for 1969’s Shelby Mustangs.
At the end of the 1969 model year 789 Shelby Mustangs were in-process at A.O. Smith. They were visually updated with black hood stripes and a chin spoiler and given new VINs. Otherwise the 1970s were exactly the same as the ‘69s making these two years essentially identical examples of the end of the Shelby Mustang series which had begun only a scant six years before.
Avidly sought by collectors and obsessively documented by the Shelby American Automobile Club, most Shelby Mustangs are well known and have well known histories. Occasionally, however, a example appears which has been out of sight for years. Even more rarely it turns out to have been little used and continuously maintained by a thoughtful and caring single owner for nearly forty years.
The Black Jade 1969 Shelby Mustang GT500 Sportsroof fastback offered here is one of those rare and highly desirable cars. It was delivered new to Ford’s dealer in Yokohama, Japan, Marubeni Motors K.K., and was sold thereafter to its first, and only, owner in Japan. It has been repainted in the original color once but is otherwise completely original, as delivered and has only 84,941km on its metric-calibrated export speedometer (52,779 miles.) Its sympathetic maintenance and care shows throughout in its clean, straight, rust-free condition.
Power of course comes from the 428 cubic inch Cobra Jet Ram Air V-8 engine which Ford and Shelby conservatively rated at 335 horsepower at 5,200rpm and a gut-wrenching 440 lb-ft torque at 3,400rpm. It puts the power through Ford’s highly regarded C-6 automatic transmission and Traction-Lok differential with high speed 3.00:1 gearing that takes full advantage of the CJ engine’s torque. In addition to the highly desirable drivetrain specification it is loaded with options including the Visibility Group, Goodyear white letter tires, Sport Deck folding rear seat, power front disc brakes, power steering, tilt steering column, Selectaire air conditioning, AM/8-track stereo radio, tinted glass, deluxe belts, tachometer and trip odometer.
It is finished in one of the Shelby Mustang’s most attractive colors, Black Jade. The interior and high back buckets seats are upholstered in black Clarion Knit/Corinthian vinyl that complements with Black Jade exterior.
It returned to the U.S. in 2006 but has never been titled by its current owner so it remains a one-owner car. Its absolutely clear history, one-owner provenance, highly original condition with known mileage and extensive options list are attributes shared by few Shelby Mustangs of this age. This is a rare opportunity for an astute collector to acquire a particularly significant, unmolested Shelby Mustang from the last, and most highly developed, series.

Hi! Hope you're having a good day! You are so right, the Generation Kill fics are very rare, it's a shame.
Could you please write something for Nate Fick where the reader is oblivious and doesn't realize that he loves them?
Thaaanks!

It had been a long tour. Iraq was brutal from start to finish, and even now, when you knew you would be heading back to the States in a couple of days, it still didn't feel real.
Staring out at the vast Iraqi desert that surrounded the base camp, you exhaled long and deep—a last-ditch attempt to expel the weeks of dust that accumulated in your lungs.
"Ready to head back home?" A familiar voice came from behind you.
You smiled to yourself as you scooted over, making room for your visitor in the back of the truck you had found refuge in. "And here I was thinking I had finally found a moment of peace and quiet in this damn war."
Nate smirked as he sat down next to you, his bright blue eyes practically sparkling in the sun. You had seen a lot of things you wouldn't ever forget while in Iraq, most of them bad—but Nate's eyes were one of the few good things that lingered in your mind.
"Sorry to disturb your personal oasis in the back of this Motor T rust bucket." The truck made a worrying sound as he shifted his weight and he quirked a brow. "Point made."
"Well maybe if you had whipped your men into shape more, I wouldn't have to feel as though Motor T is the only place I can go for some quality alone time," you told him as you tilted your head toward the sunset.
"Manimal trying to buy your underwear off of you again?"
You choked on your next breath. "How the hell do you know about that?"
Nate laughed. "I know about everything that goes on in my platoon."
"Either way, no, that wasn't happening ... not again, at least." You shook your head. "I was just trying to take some time to reflect. I thought going home would be a happy feeling."
"You're not happy?"
"I am. But I'm also not." You tried to explain your complex feelings. "I don't know, the possibility of never seeing any of you guys again isn't as much of a relief as I thought it might be. Don't tell anyone I said that."
"I won't," Nate assured you with a chuckle. "For someone coming into a group of guys who have been together since Afghanistan, you really held your own. It'll be weird if we ship out again and you're not there."
You watched as the night sky shifted from a brilliant shade of orange into a dark purple. "Give it some time and I'll be as ready as you are to be done with this war and go home."
"How do you know I'm ready to go home?" Nate asked.
"You're not the only observant one," you answered, earning a dubious look from Nate. "... and I overheard you and Brad talking."
Nate nodded when you confirmed his suspicions. "That sounds more like it."
"Hey, I am plenty observant!" You smacked him on the shoulder. "I wouldn't be here if I wasn't. It's a pretty important quality for a marine."
"True. But still."
"But still?"
Nate turned away from the sunset to look at you. His mouth opened to respond, but before he could get a word out, he decided against it and averted his gaze. "Nothing."
"No, no, no." You grabbed his face with your hand and forced him to look at you once more. In that moment, you didn't think about the fact that you were technically laying hands on your superior. "But still what?"
"I think it's a conversation better had at a later date," he told you as he gently pushed your hand away. "When there's less sand and less gunfire. When we're just normal people, not a Lieutenant and his Corporal."
"You know we could die tomorrow, right?" you reminded him. "Or right now. There could be a sniper lining up the head shot as we speak. What if I died right now and you never got to tell me whatever it is you're being so secretive about?"
Letting out a defeated sigh, Nate reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a ring. It wasn't just some class ring either; no, it was an honest-to-God gold banded ring with a diamond on the top.
"Lieutenant Fick?" Your eyes darted between his face and the ring.
"Please do not call me Lieutenant when I'm holding an engagement ring."
Your mouth fell open. You were at a loss for words. "What ... what the fuck, Nate?"
"I suppose that's better." He clasped his hand firmly around the ring so it was no longer in sight. "When I first met you, I wrote a letter home and mentioned you. Told my folks all about how we had this woman riding with us and how I didn't think she'd last a week."
You were too impatient to wait for the follow-up. "And?" you prompted.
"And my mother sent me back the family ring and told me to let her know when the wedding was."
You laughed. You were aware how incredibly insensitive it was but in that moment, it was the only outlet you could think of for your overwhelming emotions. "What the fuck, Nate?" you whispered.
"You already said that."
"Well, I'm sorry I'm a little shocked in a moment like this. Can you blame me for not exactly expecting a proposal when I didn't even know you had feelings for me?"
Nate rolled his eyes. "I never actually asked you to marry me, now did I?"
"Then what's the ring for?"
"Well obviously it's for engagement!"
"What is happening right now?" You couldn't believe what was going on. Surely, you must have been dreaming. "Did you hit your head when I wasn't looking? Do I need to call Doc Bryan?"
"Oh, my God. I've really fucked this." Nate stuffed the ring back into his pocket. "This is not how I meant to approach this topic."
"What topic?"
"That I'm in love with you!" Nate proclaimed before burying his face in his hands.
A beat of silence passed and you were suddenly very grateful that you had chosen an abandoned corner of the camp to watch the sunset from.
"Nate?" you whispered once more.
"Yes?" he whispered back, his voice even more muffled from his hands.
"Did you just tell me you're in love with me?"
"Yes."
"And that engagement ring in your pocket is for me?"
"Yes." He finally lifted his head to look at you. "Not right now, of course. But yes, theoretically, at some point."
You couldn't help but laugh again. "This is so weird."
Nate made a strangled, embarrassed sound. "You're killing me here." He stood up to leave. "I should just go. This was clearly a mistake."
"Oh, settle down." You grabbed him by his uniform and pulled him back down. "Yes, I had a bit of a strong reaction at first, but considering the circumstances, I think I'm allowed that much. I never said I didn't love you back."
Nate's blue eyes lit up. "Do you?"
"Well, I don't know. I hadn't thought about it until now," you answered. "Maybe."
"Maybe?" That same sound slipped past his lips. "That's romantic."
"Okay, it's not that I've never thought about. You're obviously very attractive and all that," you rephrased. "I've just never thought about it seriously. In case you haven't noticed, we are in the middle of a war."
"I noticed. Which is why the ring's been burning a hole in my pocket until now." He drew in a deep breath, and when you didn't share another thought, he spoke again. "Now what?"
Reaching into his pocket, you fished out the engagement ring and handed it to him. "Now you ask me to marry you."
"Really?" His fingers trembled slightly as they plucked the ring out of your grasp. "Here?"
"Right here." You nodded.
"Okay. Right. Yes." He cleared his throat and jumped down from the back of the truck. Then he offered you a hand down, and once you were both standing on solid ground, he dropped down onto one knee. "Y/N, I know we haven't known each other very long. I know the typical thing is to date for a while before asking this question; hell, the typical thing is to actually have feelings for one another before asking this question. However, as a fellow marine, you know that typical is merely a suggestion. Either way, meeting you has been the highlight of this war, which I know isn't saying much but still ... I'd like for you to be the highlight of the rest of my life as well. Will you marry me?"
Your heart swelled at the gentle words falling from the mouth of one of the toughest men you had ever met. The way Nate looked up at you, as if you had the answer to every question in the world, was beyond endearing. You could truly picture a long, happy life with him.
"No," you answered.
Nate's hopeful smile fell. "No?"
"That's what you get for springing a goddamn engagement ring on me like this." You plucked the ring from his hand before inspecting it. "It is a rather beautiful ring though. Ask me again in a couple months and I'll gladly take it off your hands."
Nate shook his head as he stood back up and dusted off his knee. "And until then?"
"We date," you said matter-of-factly. "As typical as it is, I've had enough atypical for one lifetime."
Nate smiled wide. "I can't wait to marry you."

Charles Leclerc x Reader
The boys end up ordering fried chicken to refuel during the break. You call Charles over to join the haphazard circle on the floor. The members of SKZ do their best to welcome him to this niche little family, and discuss the subtleties and specificity of each other’s occupations. “Wow, you are a racer?! What car do you drive?”
“Actually, I am a driver for Ferrari”
Collective gasps. Everyone knows what Ferrari’s are and how big of a deal they are. “So do you drive a Ferrari around the track?”
“No actually. All of us F1 drivers get motor vehicles put together, somewhat personalized. The car is much, much smaller than a normal, commercial vehicle. It only seats one person, and we need to follow lots of weight protocols and barely drink water…” Charles goes into the many specifics of being an F1 driver. The members tell him that maybe, sometime during his stay, he can join them in the gym and show them what his routine is (of course Changbin asked that). Then, the subject switches to the music production process and how each of the members got to where they were currently.
When the food arrives, you turn to Charles. “I swear to every god there is, this Korean fried chicken will forever change your life. You will never look at fried chicken the same after this. Are you prepared?”
Stricken by your sudden change in behavior, he agrees. Everyone watches with a bated breath as he takes a bite out of his first piece. The moment the chicken makes a delicious crunch and reaches Charles’ tastebuds, his eyes widen and he almost moans. Putain de merde (Holy shit).
If this was fried chicken, what the hell had he been eating when he got KFC all these years? KFC?? Kentucky Fried Chicken? Fuck that. KFC as in Korean Fried Chicken was by all means superior.
Once he gets over the shock to his taste buds, Charles tells the three people who he learned were the main producers of the group, 3racha, about his ideas and compositions, inquiring about whether or not they could help. “Of course man! What do you need? Han here is a genius lyricist, as is Changbin, but he and I mainly produce the actual music”, says Chan. “Tell you what. Why don’t you come join us in my studio tomorrow and we can experiment with some of the stuff you have”.
Charles checks-in with you quickly, then agrees.
When you finally arrive at the hotel, you block out your surroundings and immediately get into the shower, feeling icky with sweat. Charles however, takes a step inside and notices that there was only one bed. Uh oh. This felt too much like one of those disgusting Hallmark movie plots. When you come out of the shower, drying your hair with a towel and in a bathrobe, you finally see the problem. “Ummm, je peux prendre le canapé (Um, I can take the sofa)”, volunteers Charles, scratching the back of his neck and trying to keep down the blush crawling up his cheeks.
“Non, non, ce n'est pas la peine de faire ça. Ce serait vraiment mauvais pour ton dos... C'est bon, je suis d'accord pour partager le lit…(No, no, no need to do that. It would be really bad for your back... It's ok, I'm ok with sharing the bed…)”
Charles just hmms in acknowledgement and rushes off to take a shower of his own.
When he returns, you’ve already blow-dried your hair and are sitting at the vanity doing some skincare. From your peripheral, you see that he’s only got a towel around his waist, held by an arm, and is drying his hair with a smaller towel. Quickly, you avert your eyes and continue to do your skincare as you hear him rustling around his suitcase and grabbing some clothes.
“What are you doing there Chéri?”, you hear Charles ask from behind you. You deduce that he’s changed by now and look up through the mirror. “Just some basic upkeep for my skin. I wasn’t born this flawless, you know?”, you flick your hair sassily.
“Hmm, but I beg to differ, love”.
Flustered by the sudden flattery, you scramble around the table, knocking over some of the products, and desperately trying to find your moisturizer. When you look back up through the mirror, Charles is smirking at you successfully. You grab a small hand-towel on the table and throw it at him, aiming for his stupidly handsome, dimpled face, but of course, his quick driver reflexes kick-in and he catches it before impact.
He comes over and stands over your shoulder. “Mind if I join you?”
You turn to him and he bends down to your level. Scooping out some of your moisturizer, you rub it on his face, taking your time to trace the arch of his nose and over his cheekbones. Charles watches as you gently massage the product, his eyes never leaving the concentrated look on your face. When you’re done, you break this intimate moment by stretching your neck up slightly and leaving a light kiss at the corner of his lips.

Best Mouthguards for Different Ages: Protecting Smiles from Kids to Adults
In the world of sports and physical activities, it is crucial to prioritise dental protection. Mouthguards play a vital role in safeguarding our teeth and smiles from potential injuries. Different age groups, from kids to adults, require specific mouthguards to ensure optimal protection.
Choosing the right mouthguard is essential to provide maximum comfort and safety. This blog post will explore the best mouthguards in Melbourne suitable for different ages and highlight their features and benefits.
Mouthguards for Kids
When it comes to children, mouthguards are a must during sports activities. Kids are more prone to accidents and injuries due to their developing motor skills and lack of coordination. Parents should invest in high-quality mouthguards to protect their teeth from potential trauma.
There are two types of mouthguards available for kids: custom and boil-and-bite. Dental professionals individually make custom mouthguards and offer the best fit and protection. On the other hand, boil-and-bite mouthguards can be moulded at home by boiling them in water and then biting into them to achieve a personalised fit.
When selecting a mouthguard for kids, it is important to consider key features such as comfort, durability, and ease of cleaning. Look for mouthguards in Melbourne that are BPA-free and have good shock absorption properties.
Mouthguards for Teens
As children transition into their teenage years, the need for mouthguards remains crucial. Teenagers are often involved in more intense sports activities, increasing the risk of dental injuries. Additionally, teenagers with orthodontic appliances or braces require special mouthguards to protect their teeth and appliances.
Specialised mouthguards tailored to teenage athletes' needs are available in the market. These mouthguards offer extra protection and comfort, ensuring that teenagers can focus on their performance without worrying about dental injuries. Some top mouthguard brands suitable for teens include Under Armour Armour Fit Mouthguard, Shock Doctor Braces Mouthguard, and Venum Challenger Mouthguard.
It is essential to consult an orthodontist when selecting a mouthguard for teenagers with braces. They can guide the most suitable options and ensure proper fit and protection.
Mouthguards for Adults
Even as adults, dental protection should never be overlooked during sports and recreational activities. Adults can face potential dental issues such as chips, fractures, and tooth loss. A mouthguard can cushion and minimise the risk of such injuries.
Tumblr media
Various types of mouthguards are available for adults, depending on their specific needs. Custom-fit mouthguards, made by dental professionals, offer the highest protection and comfort. They are individually designed to fit the unique contours of an individual's mouth, offering superior fit and stability.
Night guards are another type of mouthguard suitable for adults. They are primarily used to prevent teeth grinding and clenching during sleep, which can lead to dental issues. Night guards are made from soft materials and offer comfort while protecting the teeth from grinding forces.
Some recommended adult mouthguards include Shock Doctor Pro Mouthguard, Venum Predator Mouthguard, and SISU Max 2.4 Mouthguard. These mouthguards are known for their durability, comfort, and excellent shock absorption properties.
Denture Wearers and Mouth Protection
Denture wearers face unique challenges regarding mouth protection during physical activities. Traditional mouthguards may not fit properly over top denture Melbourne, causing discomfort and potential damage to the dentures.
Specially designed denture-friendly mouthguards are available to address this issue. These mouthguards are constructed with a unique design that accommodates denture Melbourne comfortably while providing adequate protection to the natural teeth.
Denture-friendly mouthguards are made from flexible materials that adapt to the shape of dentures and natural teeth. They offer a secure fit, preventing movement or displacement during physical activities.
Conclusion
Dental protection through mouthguard usage is of utmost importance across different age groups. From kids to adults, mouthguards in Melbourne provide the necessary cushioning and shock absorption to prevent dental injuries. By choosing the right mouthguard, individuals can ensure maximum comfort and protection. Whether it's for kids, teens, adults, or denture wearers, numerous options in the market cater to specific needs and preferences. Prioritising dental protection through mouthguard usage is a simple yet effective way to safeguard our smiles and maintain oral health.

Rudolf Berthold (Part 2)
On 2nd February 1916 Rudolf Berthold shot down his first victory in a single seater fighter. From then on followed a row of victories until he tested out a new airplane (Pfalz). The motor failed and he crashed to the ground. Berthold lost consciousness for a moment but regained it due to the immense pain he felt. The people coming to his help thought he was dead, but hearing him swear proofed them otherwise: “Er schimpft wieder, er lebt!” (“He is swearing again, he´s alive!”). Despite doctors predicting that he would be blind, he regained his sight while recovering in the hospital; still he was badly injured with a broken thigh, upper leg and nose. During this stay he learned that one of his brothers had died. Learning that he was to be transported to a hospital in Germany Berthold sneaked out with help of his comrades and returned to continue the command of KEK Vaux and in August 1916 he shot down his 6th enemy.
More and more Jagdstaffeln were being established. Buddecke (who had been posted to Turkey over the summer) was given the command of the new Jasta 4, Berthold took care of the preparation. Buddecke recalled at his return to Vaux: “Then I again meet with the incomparable Franconian (his nickname for Berthold). He had been through a lot and after he returned, he had to be hoisted into his plane. But he resumed his duties.”
On the 10th October 1916 Berthold got the Pour le Mérite. For him, to whom duty and service to his country and Kaiser was holy, it was the happiest day.
Tumblr media
At the same time, he was assigned the command of Jasta 14. He was a strict commander who expected his pilots to be as dedicated, aggressive and disregarding of their own lives as he was. Morale was high and got higher when the Staffel got new Albatros D.I and D.II.
The year 1917 came and with it new challenges. The air war had changed, German planes weren´t superior to those of the enemy and the two most successful and famous pilots, Immelmann and Boelcke, were dead. Berthold suggested to his superiors the organization of several Jastas into one big Geschwader. This was met with scepsis and at first nothing happened. Then Jagdgeschwader Richthofen was established. Berthold is angry because he thinks this is not because it was finally understood that big groups under one leader make the most sense but because Richthofen personally is being rewarded. The German army withdrew to the Sigfried line and in March 1917 Jasta 14 was moved to the Aisne sector. Bloody April was in full force and Berthold contributed greatly to the enemy losses when he again suffered a serious injury on 24th April. He was shot through his thigh and he was sent home to Germany until 15th June.
Tumblr media
During his absence Berthold got the impression the area he operated in didn´t provide enough action anymore so he asked to be transferred. A wish that was granted but instead of being able to take the whole Jasta 14 with him, he became commander of Jasta 18 which was stationed in Flanders and provided much better hunting grounds and formidable opponents. He was able to take his comrades and personal friend Josef Veltjens and Walter Dingel with him.  Later on his wish for a bigger formation was granted and he he took command of Jagdgruppe 7 (Jastas 18, 24, 33, 36).
By October 1917 Berthold had shot down 28 enemy aircraft. While shooting down the 29th he himself took a bullet through the right arm which shattered the bone. The wound was complicated and he was send to a hospital in Hannover. His sister Franziska, a nurse in the Viktoria Hospital in Berlin, managed to get him transferred to her care. Four month he had to stay in the hospital with excruciating pain and the arm remained paralysed. Learning that he will lose leadership of his Jasta enraged and motivated him; he learned to use his left hand (he was right handed) so that he could return to flying as soon as possible. His doctors used cocaine to treat his chronic pain (a practice that started to become common, while not being aware of the dangers of the drug). Side effects were bad temper and aggressiveness, something that Berthold had struggled with already. Now these side effects and the subsequent addiction influenced his decisions.
In early 1918 Berthold decided he was done with being injured and away from the front and requested to resume command. Despite his arm wound still not properly healed and his body weakend he returned. His motto: “If I survive I have time to heal after the war is over. If I fall, healing is unnecessary anyway.” In the meantime, a second Jagdgeschwader had been established and Berthold with Jasta 18 put under its control. As he was not yet able to fly, he took care of everything on the ground while Buddecke led in the air.
Tumblr media
Buddeckes role as Bertholds second in command was tragically cut short when he was killed five days after arriving at Jasta 18. Shortly after that Berthold was made leader of JG 2. Not wanting to part with Jasta 18, he exchanged it with Jasta 15 and so stayed with Jasta 18 for the rest of the war.
Despite being forbidden from flying until fully healed, Berthold shot down his next victim. With his arm wound still festering and his right hand lame, he had his mechanics modify the controls of his plane in a way that he could operate it with one arm and if necessary with his teeth. Other pilots reported that they sometimes heard him scream in pain while dogfighting.
May 1918 brought a blow not only to the military but to the whole German nation. Manfred von Richthofen was killed in combat. Rudolf Berthold noted in his diary: “Richthofen has fallen, comrades fall daily, the British have surpassed us. I must show the young boys that duty stands above all else.”
He still had much trouble with his arm. His orderly had to remove bone splinters from the heavily festering wound. Despite being almost constantly in pain as well as suffering from drug addiction he managed to shoot down a further sixteen enemies until August 1918, bringing his tally to 40.
His mental state was suffering greatly, he wrote to his sister: “I have so much worry and trouble. The death of Richthofen has been very depressing. Now I have to move on as one of the old guard. Maybe I will also be killed.”
On 10th August 1918 Rudolf Berthold got up into the air as dedicated and ruthless as always. Doing his duty despite being in severe pain and partially disabled. He shot down his 44th opponent. And his last. After having finished the British bomber plane his own plane was not controllable anymore and plunged to the ground. Miraculously he survived, even with no injuries but his arm being rebroken. In the hospital his conditions worsened and he was sent to Germany and put under the care of his loyal Franziska. His war was over. At least for a short time.
Injuries:
1. broken thigh, upper jaw and nose
2. shot through thigh
3. shot through arm (shattered bone) resulting in a festering wound and a lame hand as well as a subsequent cocaine and morphine addiction
End of Part 2.

When you say that Russian forces didn't mobilize much, or didn't mobilize enough, how do you square that with the reports (rumors?) from really early in the war, about all sorts of janky prototype weapons and ancient WWII-era things being dusted off and sent into battle? I've heard various people say the Russian army didn't attack at full strength, and various others say they threw anything and everything in there, but I've no idea which ones to believe.
It very complicated - both are true, though early in the war most of these reports are probably selection bias. Organizations don't work as seamless resource distributors - they have personalities, hierarchies, etc. What we overall observed, particularly early in the war, was *too much* equipment and not enough people to use them. Michael Koffman, one of the best Russia analysts in the world who I recommend wholeheartedly to anyone, has a great write-up in March on Russia's force design. He notes things like how the Russian motorized infantry platoons were supposed to have 7 or more soldiers per vehicle, such that ~3 could dismount while the rest drive, but in practice they averaged ~5, meaning they were pretty much stuck in their APC's. This is having too many vehicles! But while the front line groups have too many, certainly backline reserves had too few - but the frontline groups aren't gonna give up their equipment.
Things like that are happening because Russia still partially depends on conscription to flesh out its army, but has refused to declare a draft because they don't consider the war in Ukraine to be a "war", but a "special military operation". All of these battle groups entered the war at at least ~20% undermanned due to that gap, and it was probably more in practice due to corruption. This is the biggest part of how Russia 'half-assed' the war, and its still true.
Other parts of the story are force commitments, Russia simply held lots of assets in 'reserve' thinking they wouldn't need them and then realized they were wrong. Its you get things like the March-April 2022 escalation of the air war - Russia increased its sortie rate for air strikes by 50% at the end of March by deploying more planes, etc, from other parts of the country as they realized they had failed to achieve air superiority. They obviously could have done this in February, they just chose not to because they had a different, incorrect, picture of what the optimal strategy would be.
But now, today, most of these cards are played, outside of the draft. They have lost more and more tanks, artillery, planes (shot down some, but run down more often), etc over the six months of war than they can hope to replace with new production or assets sitting elsewhere, and reserves are getting into the older, junkier territory. In February they didn't need any 1970's tech, any of that tech being used is just bureaucratic slip-up. Its a different story after 6 months of war. So this is the second part of how Russia "half-assed" the war, but its increasingly less relevant.
A wrinkle by the way is the DLPR, the two breakaway republics of Luhansk & Donetsk that are Russian puppet states in Ukraine. These two regions have been Russia's answer to their mobilization problem, and they have implemented mass conscription and field units to fight alongside the Russians. But they are from dirtpoor regions and aren't part of the Russian army - as such they get the castoffs Russia is willing to donate to them. If you are hearing reports of 19th century rifles or ww2 helmets being used in like March, they are probably true - but they are DLPR forces, not mainline Russian forces. Russia absolutely should have been arming these forces to be up to par, but strategy has not been their forte in this war.

Why Electric Skateboards?
One might argue that while electric skateboards have value, aren't traditional (non-electric) skateboards better? After all, they produce zero emissions, yield superior health benefits, and are less expensive to purchase and maintain.
It's all true. If you prefer to ride a non-electric skateboard and will ride it regularly as described above, that's fine. No matter what type of skateboard or bike you choose to ride, we support riding electric.
However, as a serious transportation option, electric skateboards are superior. A wider group of people can ride them on a regular basis. Riding an electric skateboard doesn't have to be a sport. You can ride the electric skateboard to and from get off work effortlessly. You can be an elderly person and still ride an electric skateboard. Plus, riding an electric skateboard is a much more enjoyable experience for the average person.
No one product or habit change can completely change the world, but riding skateboards more and using electric skateboards more could be a big step in the right direction. Let's make up our minds to make our electric skateboard more frequent and practical in daily use.
Let's also be advocates for riding skateboards and electric skateboards. Let's encourage our city, state, and federal leaders to provide improved and safer skateboarding infrastructure, and encourage consumers to buy or use electric skateboards.
Eboards Fight Harmful Climate Change
Time is running out to stop harmful carbon dioxide emissions from causing irreparable damage to our climate, according to a dire new report from the United Nations. It described climate change as a "serious and growing threat" that would cause widespread damage over the next two decades, such as ecosystem collapse, species extinction, deadly heat waves and floods.
Each of us contributes to global warming every time we drive our cars and trucks. While a motorized vehicle is necessary for most long distance trips and carrying heavy loads, the reality is that most of the car trips we take are short trips. In many communities, many of these errands can be replaced by riding a veymax skateboard. If you live in a city, chances are good that there are grocery stores, pharmacies, and convenience stores within a two or three mile radius of your home.
Even if your city is unenlightened and doesn't yet offer safe skateboarding routes, you can often use residential areas or other low-traffic streets to plan alternate routes for running errands. That's what I personally had to do, since my city is far from skateboard friendly, with only a few miles of utilitarian skateways. I still find ways to use my skateboard to safely get to the supermarket, other stores and nearby parks.
