Hangster (and IceMav) - Bradley is too tall to be a naval aviator and instead becomes a sky diver, specialising in spin recovery. He is a civilian contractor to the Airforce and Navy to teach pilots how to survive parachute spins from ejections. A more in-depth version of this post.

PROLOGUE 2003-2006

2007-2010 – The middle years

                He ends up with another part-time job, fortunately using his human performance part of his degree and working as a personal trainer, mostly early mornings. Jumping out of planes is expensive. He moves out of the house him and Mav usually live in, but months later ends up moving in with Ice when he’s diagnosed with cancer. They don’t sugar coat things, not now that he’s an adult. He has to listen to them talk about wills and property and investments and assets; wants to stick his head in the sand and just chant la-la-la until it all goes away. He doesn’t want to consider his life without them both in it. Hard enough to think he’s already lost his actual parents, he can’t lose them too.

                He sits through it though, signs forms he reads carefully because both Ice and Mav frown and look disappointed the first time he signed without even looking. They get similar forms for him, given his current career and he’s pretty sure Mav has to excuse himself to go and throw up when he says he doesn’t want to be kept on life support indefinitely if he has a bad fall. Ice just nods and accepts his decision with quiet equanimity and he wonders if it’s because he is facing his own mortality. He starts a YouTube channel, figures out how to take effective video and then edit it properly. Loads them up without commentary; originally it’s for those he’s taken up for tandem jumps, but then it’s for other instructors around the country, and then a couple of them move overseas. His channel has a small but dedicated following.

                One of the silver linings of Ice’s cancer diagnosis is the fact he seems to no longer give any fucks about what people might say about his relationship with Mav. Don’t ask, don’t tell is still in effect but it’s also definitely very firmly in the don’t tell realm as far as Bradley can figure out. Everyone who they interact with seems to simply know that they’re together, and have been for as long as everyone remembers. Definitely for as long as he remembers. No one wants to tell and he guesses that Ice is high enough up that there’s probably blind-eyes all over the place.

                Then Ice insists on Mav moving in, which he promptly leaves the house for, not wanting to hang around for listening to the argument or hearing the makeup sex that will surely follow. So they put the house on the market, then he’s given the money and told he can finally buy the plane he wants which he delays a little and carefully shops around, listening to the advice of his old instructors and also Ice and Mav. All his gifts for years are centered around either skydiving or filming and editing software. It doesn’t escape his notice that Mav’s gifts tend towards the safer indoor aspects, while Ice tends toward the safety needs. They’re both supportive in their own ways.

                Living together, all of them, properly for the first time, results in the sudden influx of photos that pop up, every flat surface has frames with photos and Ice starts taking more photos. All of their lives are visually documented on the walls and bookshelves, although Bradley notes the front room Ice uses as a study and work room remains very formal and devoid of any personal touches. Other than formal portraits, like his graduation photo. Regardless of what room he’s in he feels like he is at home.

                His nightmare becomes a reality, although not in full. The call he got was from Bradley, starting off with I’m alive but I’m on the way to the hospital. He’d then passed the phone over to someone else. Apparently he’d taken a bad landing after being forced to use his second backup shute. He’d been too close to the ground so had hit it hard. His hands are shaking as he walks down the hospital corridor, the only thing that has him not vomiting is the fact that Bradley is the one who called him. That Bradley was alive; maybe not alive and well, but alive enough to call him.

                “Bad fall,” Mav mutters. “Like he’s tripped over the front step and grazed his hands…”

                He pushes the door open to Bradley’s room. He’s pale, face covered in bandages, one arm in a cast and both legs in braces, but not as he’d imagined a broken spine and him being in something like full-traction it’s a little bit of a relief.

                “He’s damned lucky.”

                “Doesn’t look lucky.”

                “He had his legs tucked up, hit the ground and rolled. Like it was as natural as breathing. He dislocated his shoulder but continued with the momentum… most people I know would have hit the ground feet-first despite years of training and the shock would have caused spiral fractures. They’ve braced his ankles as a matter of precaution because the x-rays showed no damage, which is a miracle but also isn’t surprising considering he walked into the hospital. We don’t usually say that you can be a natural at skydiving, but this kid is definitely a natural.”

                Mav sighs.

                Of course he is.

                “If the cancer didn’t get me, then I’m sure jumping out of a plane isn’t going to kill me either.”

                “Fighting words. It’s a good thing I’m taller than you. When we come into land you’re going to lift your legs.”

                He listens as Bradley takes him through everything, despite the fact that he knows it all, having listened to it so often he’s pretty sure he could repeat it back, learning it alongside Bradley and quizzing him on it. He can follow Bradley’s instructions, he’s in the Navy. When he’s strapped to Bradley, waved the all-clear he feels a little frisson of abject terror but it’s too late, he’s falling toward to the ground and then his fear fades away and he lets out a whoop of joy, hears Bradley’s amused laughter before it’s whipped away by the rushing air. They hit the ground and it’s gentler than he thought it would be.

                “Woo! What a rush!”

                “Yeah? You like it?”

                “It reminds me of my first launch off a carrier. Damn. Yeah. I get it now. Love you kid,” he says, knocking his own helmet against Bradley’s, the words aren’t ones he says often, but feels the need to say them more often now. Doesn’t want Bradley to ever doubt how he feels. Mav either for that matter…

                “Love you too.”

…             …             …

                “You were both up there, together.”

                He should have known it would give Mav another nightmare and he curls himself around him, makes gentle shushing noises under his breath, glad now that he doesn’t have to try and do this over the phone.

                “Do you trust him?”

                “Of course I do!”

                “Then know that skydiving, especially tandem skydiving is safer than driving to and from the hangar. Car accidents are far more common and hurt far more people than skydiving does. You’ve seen him with his gear. Hell, we check it. He’s damned good at what he does. He’s meant to be up in the air just as much as you are…”

                Mav lets out a little hiccupping breath and Tom knows he’s got something that’ll definitely take his mind of everything else.

                “You know, there’s something else I want to check off on my bucket list…” Tom says, and he’s not going to move, but his otherwise grand plans aren’t getting a look in right now. This feels right.

                “What?”

                “Pete Mitchell, will you marry me?”

                Ice and Mav leave plans on the table one night. An extension to the house, with a shared internal door but his own front door; effectively making two houses. A large bedroom, another room for an office with a desk, extension to the garage so he can store his gear, enough room to roll out his chutes and carry out checks. It’s very clearly an invitation to never move out, but also to live independently and he finds the sticky notes they use to communicate when they’re too busy to actually stop and talk. Simply draws a heart and writes love it in the center.

                He doesn’t bother looking at moving out of home again.

In honor of ✨ pride month ✨, have some more domestic icemav headcanons!!!!

i have mentioned it before, but i believe Ice to have slavic origins, either russian or polish. he incorporates a lot of his culture into his cooking and his lifestyle. he introduces his cooking to mav (and little bradley), and if mav wasn't in love then, he fell after that. 

mav and bradley help in the kitchen to learn the dishes and carole is sure to send recipes with bradley every time they watch him. 

when she dies and bradley goes to live with mav permanently, all her recipes are given to him. it's bittersweet for all of them. Bradley is torn between wanting his mother’s cooking and not wanting to miss her. ice and mav want to help him hold onto her, but struggle with accepting that these recipes won't be made by her ever again.

ice loves to spoil mav with gifts. clothes, treats, trinkets. mav didn't really have a lot of stuff to call his own growing up, so getting things that are his, only his, is extremely special. 

despite common belief, mav is not the main mechanic/handyman of the house. sure, he does his own bike repairs, but ice does most of the rest: light fixtures, plumbing, engine repairs, etc. 

tom, on more than one occasion, has quoted a russian proverb casually. it does not make sense to anyone in the room but him. when he tries to explain, it usually only serves to confuse people more. pete tends to tease him about it, but he knows tom’s doing his best.

before meeting tom’s mother formally, pete insisted that tom teach him some russian phrases. tom refuses, saying that pete doesn't need to change to get on his mother's good side.

 pete then hunts down slider, who learned russian for tom. slider sides with ice, but teaches pete a few phrases after he assures slider it's only to show respect.

after carole dies, pete and tom get bradley a therapy dog. Rocco, a pitbull-border collie mix, ends up being helpful to all of them, as well as comforting any visitors who may need it.

the flyboys help out with bradley. going to sports events, birthday parties, even financial support when they can. 

mav and tom rarely sleep in due to military conditioning, but when they're tired enough, they can sleep for up to 14 hours consecutively.

they 100% got a couch with a hide-a-bed. they use it for visitors, party nights, sleepovers, and giant cuddle sessions.

the seriousness of their relationship didn't really set in for pete until Bradley's first day of school. ice was there the whole time, helping him make breakfast, tying bradley's shoes, hugging him goodbye. They were truly this kid’s parental figures. and they loved each other and him

you have been slowly converting me with all your icemav posting, and i recently rewatched top gun and i am s o l d. it has been consuming all of my thoughts! do you have any favorite fics??

I’ve thrown myself head first into icemav recently so I can ABSOLUTELY rec some of my favorite fics I've read so far!!

When We Get Around to Talking About It by @compacflt is the pièce de résistance of icemav fiction I think, for me personally. It's masterfully written and nuanced and just so heartbreaking. the characterization feels so true to how these men would really be in real life and how they would deal with coming to terms with their feelings for each other and sexuality while being in the navy. and as if 90,424 words of beautiful prose wasn't enough of a gift, there is also a sequel/other stories called Debriefing (& Other Stories) which includes a more truncated version of the original but from mav's pov which is just 🤌🏻🤌🏻

Dreams of Impact by thecarlysutra is also very good. It involves a little supernatural flavor, which I enjoy, and revolves around how their lives could be different if they'd just made one single different choice.

come the same colors by susiecarter is a fav. It's a classic 'you got hurt and it's made me reckon with how I really feel about you, but I haven't figured out how to express that'. So basically it's amazing. this author also has a great catalogue of icemav, so it's really a jumping point to read all of her great work. A Shared Cup is another personal fav of mine from this author. it involves soul telepathic bonds. soooo good

a binary star by vannral is a really yummy piece of fanfic. the first line of the description is the perfect primer for how great the rest of the fic is: "Ice hasn’t ever given much thought to celestial things up in the sky but he knows that Maverick burns like one." like. c'monnnn

i'll ride in this life with you by sassenach082 is an ice and mav raise bradley after carol passes away fic, and it's full of sooo much lovely hurt/comfort that is so sweet it will rot your teeth. any fic with a plethora of baby bradley is going to be good for me

I saw beauty to the north by sortalively (tiisis) is a delayed injury fic set post TG:M. It has a lot of rooster and ice and mav reconciling in it which I'm a sucker for. and, if you like the exploration of rooster and mav's relationship (I'm a sucker for parental figure fics lets not unpack that) this author has some greaaaaaaaat fics on their page for that!

cloaked in the bruises of our failures by faerie_ground will rip your heart out. It takes the mission from TG:M and moves it to the 80s with our favorite class of '86 being trained to fly it, all while Mav and Ice are a few years post a messy 'break-up'. I should warn you that this one comes with a trigger warned from sexual assault from a person of authority to an employee, so if you aren't interested in that maybe skip this one. It is so beautiful though and treats the subject with the respect it deserves. slithered here from eden (just to sit outside your door) is another by this author that is very good and I am waiting patiently for an update

a higher fidelity by basedchamp is a classic slowburn with ice and mav developing their friendship before they realize their feelings for one another

no brighter diamond by qin_ling is a wonderful 'five times...' fic and it's so good. Everything by this author is fantastic so you should def check out their other stuff. as lions is about time travel. delish.

You're Gonna Be The One That Saves Me by an orphan_account is amazing. It's got mav struggling post hop 31 and Ice being there to offer emotional support and more if you know what I mean

'Til I Understand by Katastrophe (Karrington) is about Mav punching out of dark star and kind of fills in some blanks about what his loved ones went through while he was missing. Katastrophe is another author with a large catalogue to just go crazy in

PurpleArrowzandLeather has 153 tg fics on their page with a huge variety, some icemav, some flyboys of '86 (which I adore, I love fics showing their friendship). you can get lost in their page for a while haha. they also have their bookmarks public! so you can dig around in there, too

Sailor's Delight by saurora_borealis can be read as ice and mav or icemav and I think we both know which one I infer it as. Mal de Mer by them is like that, too

baby, baby, i'd get down on my knees for you by boasamishipper and simplecoffee is 'five times mav proposes and one time ice says yes' fic. It's sweet as candy

Icemav/Hangster Headcanon, basically an AU where Maverick and Rooster never had a falling out, married Icemav, and Hangster have known each other since they were teenagers.

Carole passed away when Bradley was in middle school, and Mav then officially adopted him.

Ice and Mav live together with Bradley, and he called them dad and pops (uncle Ice when outside of the house cause, you know). Ice and Mav basically raised Bradley, and made him fell in love with everything aviation. When he told them he wanted to go to the naval academy and one day become a fighter pilot like them, they supported his decision.

Jake’s father was also a navy fighter pilot and eventually became an Admiral. Ice knew Jake’s father and have served with him at some point. They have a good relationship.

Jake’s father is actually a good father but he’s just always very busy so he’s never around. After becoming an Admiral, he somehow become even busier. Meanwhile, his mom was a lawyer that eventually became a US senator, and also very busy and was never around. Jake has one older sister and one older brother, his sister became a naval surgeon, and his brother also became a pilot.

After adopting Bradley, Mav decided to permanently teach at Top Gun so he can settle down and be around him all the time, meanwhile Ice also started to get promoted and trying his best to quickly rise in rank so he can also settle down with Mav and Bradley instead of being sent around all over the world.

Jake first met Bradley at a naval functions, Ice and Jake’s father introduced them. They became friends ever since. 

Jake hangs out at Bradley’s house all the time, and he saw how Mav was always around, and how Ice always tried to call Bradley even when he was deployed. Eventually he got kinda jealous cause his parents were never around and started to pick fights with Bradley all the time. It didn’t help that jake actually had a crush on Bradley so it’s kinda also like pigtail-pulling on his part. They still hang out together tho, they just always bickers all the time.

Bradley and Jake both went to the naval academy at Annapolis, but Bradley was 1 year ahead of Jake. Natasha was 1 year below Jake. Nat eventually became besties with Bradley after getting stationed together at some point.

Eventually Icemav got legally married when DADT was repealed, Bradley was Mav’s best man, Slider was Ice’s. Hangman was also present at the wedding.

Bradley and Jake got together at some point after their first stint at TOP GUN, but broke up shortly after. They kinda became the infamous couple who have that on-again-off-again relationship in their circle of friends. Everytime they hang out together, everyone would always bet whether they’re currently in their on or off phase. People also jokingly called them the royal couple, since both Admiral’s kids are basically navy royalty at that point.

Sometimes after Bradley became a fighter pilot, Mav heard about the darkstar program and got interested. I mean, it’s Mav, so of course he would want to try being the fastest man alive. So he quits teaching and beg Ice to pull some strings to get him to be the test pilot for that program.

The TGM movie still happen the way it was, but Ice is alive (just like Val, he survives the fight with cancer but lost his voice). 

In the beginning of the movie, Bradley and Mav was fighting. Bradley was mad because he thought Mav recklessly endanger himself for fun at the darkstar project. Mav’s locator malfuction so they didn’t know whether or not he survives the darkstar exploding, it took 12 hours before they found him and it shook Bradley up real bad cause at that point he’s still very traumatized from almost losing Ice to cancer, and at the time he also didn’t know about Admiral Cain trying to shut down the project as the reason why Mav did what he did. Meanwhile, Mav was mad that Bradley insisted to go on the suicide mission despite the danger.

Ice used his connection to help Mav return to TOP GUN to train the kids for the mission, cause he knew, his husband might be the only hope to make sure that everyone survives that mission.

Bradley didn’t know that Mav was going to be their instructor, and when Mav came, he got angry thinking Mav was there to try to make sure he didn’t get send out on the mission. 

Rooster and Hangman was currently on their off phase during the training. Hangman actually has a good relationship with Mav, and he agreed with Mav a lot when critisizing Rooster’s flying cause they both worry. So they also fought a lot because of it.

Everything else is basically the same, and right before they fly the mission, Rooster somehow found out from Hondo the real reason why Mav did what he did at the darkstar project, and then Mav actually selected him to be his wingman. He tried to talk, but like in the movie, Mav basically told him they’ll talk after.

During the mission, Ice was present at the carrier. Imagine how he feels when he heard that both his husband and son was shot down. And when they came back in the F-14, he immediately ordered Hangman to go and escort them back. He’s basically, boy bring them both back to me in one piece and I’ll give you my blessing to do whatever you plan to do to my son after ;)

Afterward, everybody actually talk, Mav and Roo dealt with their misunderstanding, then Jake finally just went on his knee and propose to Bradley, cause we’ve been dancing around each other for years Roo and I almost lost you and I just can’t wait anymore please just marry me ok.

Ice managed to convince Mav to finally accept promotion so he would stop flying dangerous test planes and instead became the commanding officer at TOP GUN.

Bradley and Jake got married. This wedding was a huge deal for everyone, there’s a huge bet going, and Bob won the bet lol. But really, everybody’s just happy that Admiral Kazansky’s kid finally got married with Admiral Seresin’s kid after years and years of all that drama.

i was SO delighted when i saw this ask because if there are two things i love it’s 1) the sound of music and 2) icemav so naturally i would love to combine the sound of music and icemav right? FORTUNATELY i already have discussed this before with both @nicejobkid and @beterparker so i have Thoughts about this.

(i also have so many thoughts about the sound of music being mav’s favorite movie in canon but i can’t find the post i made on that right now so i’m just going to sit quietly and seethe)

but YES icemav sound of music au … the a/b/o verse was NOT included in our original draft but hey, what the hell! i can most certainly get behind it. i don’t have that many ideas for the a/b/o aspect of it right now but i love love LOVE the sound of music aspect of it…

just, ooooh i love the idea of mav being the one to teach ice to open his heart again, and just being so achingly mav that ice is helpless to stop himself from falling so hard and so fast after he starts to dethaw again… i love the idea of the daggers being their kids too bc those kids would ABSOLUTELY try to play matchmaker after things start to heat up between ice and mav… maybe we could have a little fun and spruce the au up with some original scenes too because i just know that hangman would be pushing ice and mav together like barbies, little shit that he is… phoenix too bc anything hangman does she has to do better LOL

and on mav’s side ugh the idea of him developing a very ill-advised crush on his hot boss who wants nothing to do with him is unfortunately so on-brand 😔 especially one he thinks is majorly out of his league (because in this au ice certainly would be)…

it’s interesting to think about how mav’s circumstances might affect his personality a little bit, the same with ice… but the most interesting and wholesome change to explore might be his faith (if one were to stick close to canon and make the abbey his home like maria) vs his sexuality and like… father viper (FATHER VIPER WOULD BE SO FUNNY) giving mav some very supportive lgbt ally parent advice about god loving all his children etc etc <3

maybe that would even be why mav leaves at first bc he’s not just in love with his boss who happens to be engaged to somebody else, he’s in love with a MAN … but love wins in the end and they all live happily ever after <3

anyway since you mentioned a/b/o thoughts like i said, i still don’t have many but uh . there might be something there with captain von trapp’s whistle 😏

when the pregnancy test comes back positive, it scares the absolute hell out of them. they've been married a couple years now, together so long it's hard to remember a time when they weren't roosterandphoenix, and it's not like they weren't trying, but still. holy shit. holy shit, phoenix whispers, with a laugh that sounds more like a sob. holy shit, bradley echoes, with what actually is a sob. holy fucking shit. they're going to be parents.

mav cries when they tell him and ice, who utilizes every connection in his (extremely vast) possession to ensure they get all the support they need from the navy, every step of the way. phoenix's parents are divorced and she's not close to either of them, and she's terrified she's not going to be a good mom. bradley, on the other hand, is absolutely shit-scared of leaving his kid behind the way goose left him and carole behind - not that it was his dad's fault, he knows that now, accidents happen, but still. when phoenix is asleep (or pretending accurately enough to fool him), he takes to whispering to her belly, making promise after promise. i'll never leave you like my dad did, baby. i swear that i'll be around for you.

bradley is there for phoenix to the point that it's almost smothering, by her side through the worst of her morning sickness and the strangest of her cravings (who the fuck craves soap, bradshaw, what kind of child am i carrying??) and her mood swings. when it gets to be a little much, ice and mav intervene and get bradley out of the house so phoenix can have a little alone time. mav spends a lot of time reassuring bradley that he won't mess this up, that he (and ice) will be there for him. that goose and carole would have been so proud of him - that mav is proud of him too. many tears are shed.

they tell the rest of the detachment at the end of phoenix's first trimester, and for the next few months, gifts sporadically arrive at their house: baby clothes, diapers, stuffed toys, blankets...many, many toy planes. everybody thinks they are So Funny and So Original. bradley ends up stringing all the little planes into the baby's mobile that hangs over the crib. (painting the nursery alone takes more planning and coordination than was required for the mission that brought dagger squad together. colors are chosen. colors are rejected, rinse, repeat. phoenix argues with bradley for three hours about why he needs to get a grip and let her stand on the ladder. bradley loses that argument but wins the one about moving furniture. when everything is finally done - painted, furniture in place, rocking chair by the crib and changing station Just So - phoenix leans into him and he presses the softest kiss to her forehead. both of them are crying. neither says a word about it to the other.)

they wanted the baby's gender to be a surprise (they decided they were going to name their kid after goose whether it was a boy or a girl), and boy howdy is it ever a surprise when bradley holds his daughter for the first time. she's tiny and pink and squirmy and So Fucking Perfect that for a single moment, all of his worries disappear. hey, nickie, bradley says to his daughter - his daughter - once he gets his voice back. she stares curiously up at him from phoenix's arms, intrigued by his mustache and the tears in his voice and eyes. this is your mommy, and i'm your daddy. it's so good to finally meet you.

nickie rose bradshaw has phoenix's hair and bradley's eyes, and everybody loves her the minute they meet her (even if they meet her well-behaved or when she's in the middle of a toddler meltdown over bradley buying the wrong cherry popsicles at the store - even though they were the right ones last week. c'est la vie). she calls ice and mav grandpa and grandmav and has them both wrapped around her little finger, absolutely adores bob (she steals his glasses like the untitled horrible goose), and thinks piggyback rides from hondo are the greatest thing in the world. she's happy-go-lucky and cheerful and climbs everything and loves music and is so goddamn smart and stubborn it's not even funny. she got that from her parents in spades.

hangman - because it's not like rooster can avoid having hangman around his kid, not when he technically saved rooster and mav's lives and especially not when coyote and phoenix are so close - nicknames her robin, and nickie loves the nickname so much that she refuses to be called literally anything else. when mav starts calling nickie robin bradley knows it's a lost cause. (and it's not like bradley thinks the nickname is bad or anything; he just Cannot Stand that it was hangman who gave his daughter something she loves so much. or that nickie likes hangman so much.)

nickie, age five, giggling like a maniac: uncle jake is funny!!!

bradley on his hands and knees: baby how could you do this to me. i watched paw patrol for you.

(meanwhile - coyote: hey phoenix says that nickie wants to go by robin now because you started calling her that. jake. jake why are you crying)

phoenix, after many talks with sarah kazansky and penny benjamin (amelia babysits whenever she is home from college), settles on a parenting style that's basically like 'treat your kid the way you would want to be treated (but also be firm enough that you are not a pushover)'. bradley follows this rulebook as well, but is a little more lenient with nickie than phoenix is when it comes to tiny things like watching one more episode of her favorite cartoon or having ice cream before dinner.

bradley teaches nickie how to play piano, just like his father (and mother, after goose died) taught him: her sitting on his lap, her little hands over his, her eyes wide with delight at the music. she is very good at it and learns how to play great balls of fire for him for father's day. bradley is absolutely Wrecked. (the video is deemed best picture worthy by the dagger squad group chat.)

nickie loves her dad a lot - she drew a mustache on her face in permanent marker when she was three and loves to make him laugh - but she loves phoenix So Much Too. the first halloween costume she is old enough to choose herself, she dresses up as her mom in her dress whites, with her hair in a neat bun and her little face So Serious. the picture has a place of honor in phoenix's wallet until nickie has kids of her own.

ironically, unlike her parents, nickie Hates flying. she cannot stand traveling commercial and the one and only time she accepts mav's offer to take her up in one of his planes, she cries so hard that they don't even make it to the end of the preflight checklist. the bradshaws end up having to travel by bus and car a lot, and when they do have to fly, dramamine becomes their new best friend. phoenix does a little better at soothing nickie's aviophobia than bradley, but it's still a very exhausting experience for everybody involved (at least until nickie is old enough to get a prescription for xanax when she flies; then it's blissfully smooth sailing.) mav and bradley are a little disappointed she's not interested in flying, but then again, maybe that's not so bad. at least they won't lose her like they lost goose.

Okay, this chapter must have altered my brain chemistry for real, because there is no other explanation for me to having experienced so many emotions whilst reading.

From the very beginning, can we talk about how everything in Jake’s home and routine reminds him of Bradley, because it is actually thanks to Bradley that that place stopped being just the place he slept at and became an actual home, with little memories and little signs of habits scattered everywhere? No, because I think I could write an actual dissertation about it.

And Javy -my man- immediately seeing through Jake’s trying to brush off the thing with a “it was for the best” 💖💖. Have I already told you how much I love the secondary characters? Probably, but I’ll repeat it because really, they are just awesome! I love Nat’s bluntness, hers not taking b*****t from anyone and saying things how they are; Javy and Cassie’s loving but not suffocating presence; Nick and Carole -who have won parenting at this point-, who show their support when they know its needed and genuinely care, but at the same time are gracious enough not to meddle and let the kids figure stuff out themselves; Harvard and his lovable himbo energy (I would have never imagined to say lovable and himbo in the same sentence, but here we are).

The way you got them back together is just perfect, because it wasn’t some tacky musical rom-com grand gesture, it was an actual open heart confused conversation in which they finally let it all out…or part of it, the rest was spoken in bed and that was so perfect too. And the fact that the secrets they kept and mistakes they made (not telling about Nick and the break up to provide a scoop) were both attempts to protect the other 💔? That’s some tragically poetic stuff right there. They are so perfect for each other, even and maybe especially because they make mistakes...and I am about to get emotional. Again.

I cannot wait to read what will happen next in this story and in the wonderful sequel ideas you have talked about! Especially the IceMav, my beloveds, wedding, because, just from the scene in which the agents tries -and succeeds- to knock some sense into Jake, it’s clear that they are both all and that makes me so happy! Even if it is a couple decades later than what it could have been, it’s so beautiful 💙. I also love the possibility of Bradley and Jake going international simply because it would be fun watching them perhaps in Europe, somewhere I might be familiar with. Plus, here most of us don't care about american football, so no paparazzi to be worried about.

HEHEHEHEHEHE you've come to the right place because I COULD TALK ABOUT THIS ALL DAY. There's SO much to be said about the home aspect- Jake deciding what that meant for him, Bradley helping him make his house into a home. His influence scattered around the space. How going forward, they're going to do that intentionally. Bradley never expected Jake to mold to fit into his already created home, but instead helped Jake build his own?

THANK YOUUUUU omg I love the secondary characters. They're so important, the people that you fill your life with influence you so much and having a support system, and Jake realizing those people are all his family he's choosing, I just! They deserve their times to shine so I can't wait to play around with them more in the sequels and one shots and stuff!

Thank you omg. I honestly wanted to focus more on just the human aspects of this story rather than angst for angst's sake. Two people learning how to love and be in love is complicated enough, and having those realistic moments where they just have to talk it out.

Just reread the Hangman Junior universe fics, the overwhelmed one is so relatable, except my parents are nowhere near supportive like Jake and Bradley. My parents are not supportive or motivating at all, they’re just so strict and all they care about is being successful and not if I’m happy with my career choice. So here’s me pretending Jake and Bradley are my parents. And IceMav too.

Easy to Manipulate

A Tommy x Alfie snippet

“Fuck you, Tommy. Don’t ask me that.”

“Arthur is still mad about what happened, and to be honest, Alfie, I don’t give two shits about it but if I want this plan to work, then Arthur needs to hear, at the very least, a fake apology.”

Alfie shakes his head in disbelief. “You ask for too fucking much, Tommy.”

 “Tell you what,” Tommy moves forward on his seat, arms coming to rest on top of his desk, hands clasped together. “If you apologize to Arthur I’ll let you fuck me right here before I call my brothers in.”

Sex between them has become somewhat of a common occurrence ever since they first met in London, and it had only stopped once Tommy had married Grace. And after her passing, Tommy hasn’t had sex with anyone else.

Alfie would be the first one after Grace.

And the idea of that is too enticing for the man sitting in front of him – that’s how he knows Alfie will comply with what he’s asking of him.

“Come here, you crazy fucker.”

Tommy tries to not look so smug at how easy it is for him to manipulate the other man with sex, as he approaches him.

They are trying to make themselves look presentable and not look like they just finished fucking a few minutes ago, when his brothers walk into the drawing room.

The moment Arthur spots Alfie and tries to run out of the office, any post-coital bliss that Tommy might have had lingering in his body left him rather quickly.

Back to business.

“Arthur, come here.” The older Shelby reluctantly obeys. “Now, Mr. Solomons is here because the next part of my plan involves us working together and before that happens, Alfie would like to say something to you, and I want you to listen, alright?”

Tommy watches in silence, trying not to laugh as Alfie mockingly apologizes to his brother, he sees how his brother gets more on edge by the second but thankfully, by the end of a very long, very fake apology, they each remain seated on their seats and there’s no ashtray being smashed on anyone’s head – he’ll take the win.

Once that apology is out of the way, they are able to move on to talk the business part of the meeting.

“You didn’t need to rile him up that much, you know,” Tommy comments when they are once again alone in the drawing room.

“Yeah, but he makes it so easy.” Tommy simply shakes his head, amused because he knows how easy it is to rile his brother.

“Want to go upstairs?” He asks after a moment of silence.

“Tommy, sweetheart, I love that you think so highly of me but I don’t think I can fuck you again. Not for a little while longer, at least.”

“Well,” Tommy walks around the desk to stand closer to where the other man is sitting. “You can always stay the night. I mean, is late already and is a long drive back to London and we both know how much your sciatica acts up when you sit still for too long in your car,” Tommy says in a fake concerned voice.

“Yeh, it would be nice, yeah, to spend the night. You know, for my sciatica. And bad knee,” Alfie follows Tommy’s games without a second thought.

“That’s right. We can’t forget about your knee.”

“Lead the way, then.” Alfie says as if he’s never before stayed at the house. What follows is an evening filled with moans and pure post-coital bliss.

Fear is the Mind Killer

SpeYeah so still trying to find a job.  My parents can’t help me anymore.  So this month is make or break.  I could lose my house.  The house that I built.  I could lose almost everything I own.  

I have no other means of support and I don’t know where to go to get help.  I don’t have an “official” diagnosis so I can’t apply for disability and likely it would be denied anyway.  There is no help.  There is no one to help me.  

Confession time:  I’ve put out all this IceMav content because it’s a form of escape.  I’ve been bugging out so hard on the inside of my head that I’ve made up this entire world to escape into and I’ve been spending all my time there.  I’ve been putting in applications, yes, and going to interviews as and when.  But the majority of my time has been obsessively writing the IceMav stuff.  I guess dome people have enjoyed it, I’ve enjoyed writing it, I’ll likely write more.  But I’ve spent the last 36 hours or so without writing anything and I’m a wreck.  

Part of the problem is just plain fear and demand avoidance.  I look at job listings and there’s so much I can’t do or want to avoid because it seems too complicated or two difficult.  I’ve tried to explain to my mother “no, I don’t want to do phone work because one of my problems with my autism is I have a really bad time talking to people especially on the phone”.  And I get “you might have to do something you don’t like to earn a living”.  Did you even hear me?!  I CAN’T DO IT.  When I went to ask for more money this last time, I went non-verbal when she freaked out.  Trying to push any words out at all became like trying to force myself to vomit.  She started in with “oh I’m going to have to get a job”  and I was like “Yeah, you’re nearly 80, you can barely walk, you can’t use one arm, and you’re going to get a job.  Good luck.  You’re going to get a rude awakening there.”  But I didn’t say anything.  Just .. couldn’t talk.  Upshot is, she can’t help me anymore.  State of TN won’t help me.  I don’t know where else to go.  

So yeah, it’s make or break.  

I don’t know what to do except keep trying to get a job.  And try not to give in so much to writing the IceMav stuff.  It’s like giving morphine to someone dying, it’ll make you feel great even as it kills you.  

I’ve signed up with a thing called Spectroomz.com, it’s a freelancer remote work thing specifically for autistic people.  I don’t know if that’s going to go anywhere but it’s intimidating, but they’ve got free courses for doing stuff and learning how to be a freelancer so ... ya know.  Something to do I guess.  

I’m just ... I’m a wreck.  I’m sorry if I’ve brought anyone down here.  No one’s reading this anyway so it doesn’t matter.

20. “It’s not that bad.” “You’re [bleeding out/burning up]!”

Tom Kazansky didn’t know why know he deiced to go to Florida for his spring break. Maybe because he spent the last one listening to his parents fight and he was just tired, maybe because it felt like it was his last chance of true freedom, maybe because it had been an extra cold winter, or maybe it was because he just wanted to go some where we could just be himself.

Finding a gay bar wasn’t even that hard, he found one the first night. Lots of guys to pick from, but as always Tom preferred to wait for the perfect moment. He was surprised how full the place was spring break was popular time for gay men too it seemed. He scanned his eyes around the place and they fell a shorter young man with a stunning smile who seemed to be the life of party, very loud, most certainly not the sort of guy for him.

Tom was surprised when someone caught him looking, most of the time he avoided locking eyes with the men of his desire. The man who had light brown hair, was around his height, and had a short auburn beard: walked over to him at the bar. He had a glass in hand but it was clear. Tom couldn’t tell if it was water or gin. The man sat down next to him. “I couldn’t help but notice you have stunning eyes. Shame I can’t tell what color they are in this light.”

Tom blinked for a moment then laughed, “If you can’t see the color how do you know how they are stunning.”

The man shrugged, “Maybe it is your stare, it speaks to me.”

“Really?” Tom tilted his head to the side, a small smirk growing, “What is it saying?”

The man smirked, his fingertips lightly dancing over Tom’s hand, “Let’s get out of here, and I can show you a really good time.”

It was only after they left the bar that Tom sensed any sort of danger, maybe because they walked past all the cars parked, maybe it was the darkness of the alley he was being pulled into, maybe it was how the man’s grip tightened as they walked. But he ignored all of them, all for a chance for some form of affection, god it had been months since he had any sort of affection and it was killing him.

Well now it was killing him, Tom thought has he felt the cold knife slashed through his shirt and his skin. Yep, he was sure paying for thinking with his sex drive. He punched back and he got his hand slashed as well. Fuck this man was good. Tom felt three more slashes, along with a few slur, which thankfully the pain drowned out, before he heard the sound of a man shouting followed closely by the sound of a fist to body and a loud gasp of air.

Tom looked up at this new arrival only to see the young man with the movie star looks who was now repeatedly kicking his attacker. Tom was grateful when he scampered off, leaving just himself and the shorter man in the alley. The young man (well Tom keeps calling him young, but truth was he probably wasn’t younger than himself) bent down. He was surprising soft spoken, very different then the flirt he spotted at the bar.

“Are you okay?”

He sat up as the man put his hand gently on his shoulder. Tom nodded as the world around him began to spin, “Y-yeah.” A lie for sure, but truth be told he didn’t want to be in this alley anymore. He tried to stand and almost fell over doing so. The handsome man caught him, a look of concern on his face.

“It’s not that bad.” Tom said as he clenched at the first knife wound as pain shot through it like a bullet leaves a gun.

The Other man looked down in absolute horror. “You’re bleeding out!”

Tom looked down at the wound and now everything felt dizzy, he felt the world slip away from him as the man shouted for his attention.

The next time Tom Kazansky was fully aware of his surroundings was when he heard a voice talking on the phone just outside the hall, the voice of his savoir. Who he didn’t even know the name of, although to be fair, he was pretty sure he didn’t know his name either. Still his voice cut through the quiet hospital.

“-Of course I punched him, what else was I supposed- Dad, Dad please this is serious, why are you laughing?”

Tom chuckled softly, it seemed he had misread this man. He watched as a soft smile grew on his savior’s face.

“..Thanks Dad.” He grew quiet as he listened to the other person, his dad evidently, on other end of the line. He nodded,  “Right okay, thanks. Yeah okay, yep uh huh I will call you tomorrow- Look dad it’s all water under the bridge you don’t have to keep apologizing.” He shifted from side to side, the way a person does when they hear praise from a parent and aren’t sure how to accept it, God Tom wished he had the chance to do that. “Thanks...I love you too Dad, bye.” He hung up the phone, a huge smile on his face, a much more real one then the one he had on at the bar, only to be surprised when he saw Tom staring at him. Tom didn’t bother to look away this time.

“Hey, sorry about that. Didn’t mean to bother you or any-”

“It wasn’t a bother. You just saved my life how could you be a bother?” Tom watched as his savoir blushed.

He rubbed the back of his neck, “Anyway, the doctor said you were good to go, just...needed your insurance and stuff before they let you go. That’s why I was on the phone with my dad, in case you needed, support.”

Tom blinked up in surprise, “But you don’t even know me.”

“You are like me, that’s all I need to know.” Hearing this from the other stunned Tom even more. God was this guy for real? How could he begin to repay him? Well he wasn’t sure but he knew of a good way to start.

“Thanks for saving me, I am Tom. Tom Kazansky.” He held out his hand and smiled as he felt the other man grasp it.

“Pete Metcalf Mitchell.”  Pete beamed at him and Tom felt his heart skip a beat, of all the things to happen on spring break, he didn’t expect to meet someone who he could call a friend. But he sure found one in the smile of this man.

5. When one of them has a bad day, what does the other do to help cheer them up?

If Mav has a bad day, Ice lets him talk out his feelings (if Mav wants to, which is a whole other story) and holds him close. If Ice has a bad day, just voicing what made his day bad usually makes him feel better since he knows Mav will probably commiserate with him. Mav will make him tea, and they’ll watch one of Ice’s favorite movies and cuddle up on the couch together while Mav makes comments and tries to make Ice laugh.

7. Who introduces their partner to their family first? How does it go?

Ice introduces Mav to his family before they’re even together. It goes very well; Ice’s parents and sister (and his pets) like Mav a lot, and are all very happy when Ice and Mav finally get together. The Lead Me On ‘verse is the only ‘verse where Ice first introduces Mav to his family as his partner, but Ice’s family still likes Mav a lot. Ice’s sister is skeptical at first, since she knows Ice was really hurt after his relationship with Cougar crashed and burned and she doesn’t want Ice to get hurt again, but when she meets Mav at thanksgiving (and can tell that he’s absolutely besotted with Ice, and vice versa), all of her wariness disappears. (She gives Mav the shovel talk in every universe, though. Ice is mortified.)

Mav’s parents are dead, so he doesn’t have immediate family to introduce Ice to. (After he proposed to Ice and Ice accepted, he called his aunt to tell her the news; they got into a huge screaming match that ended with Mav saying if she didn’t support him, she could go to hell for all he cared, and she hung up on him, and they didn’t speak again for twenty years.) However, Mav does tell Viper that he and Ice are together right after Mav buys the ring; at the start of the next session, Viper calls Ice into his office and gives him the shovel talk. There are a few family dinners at the Metcalfs that both Ice and Mav enjoy; Viper and his wife are very fond of Mav, and they’re glad he found someone that makes him happy.

In private, Ice usually puts his arm around Mav and Mav leans into him. When DADT is in effect, they don’t touch each other in public - though sometimes they hold hands if they think they can get away with it. After DADT is repealed and they get married -- and if they’re in a setting that doesn’t require them to be professional -- they act the same as they do in private, and make no move to hide that they’re still stupidly in love after all these years. (Their students think it’s weird but also adorable. Bradley is mostly over it, but he thinks his uncles are cute too.)
