the director of one of my gigs is an old man with an astounding gift for prose who conducts like he's painting. a gem from rehearsal last night, imploring the tenors to look up for his tempo:
"I am a swan, floating serene and graceful across the lake. You are otters banging up behind me!"

What Is and Isn't a Fish: a List
A list of the animals I discussed in my fish essay, but for those who don't want to scroll through paragraphs of text to find out if an animal is or isn't a fish. Just CTRL+F your way through here!
I'll add onto here more animals whenever I get asked about them being fish. See my fish essay here!
Some notes before you proceed:
Yes, all tetrapods are fish! We are phylogenetically fish, as we are and our ancestors were lobe-finned fish! "Fish" in the phylogenetic sense is a paraphyletic group if you try to exclude tetrapods, so it is frankly impossible.
How come tetrapods aren't listed as fish then? Long answer, read my essay. Short answer, me and other fish accounts tend to operate on the morphological definition of fish, so does most of the world. Here I use the morphological definition of "fish".

The Constable's Dues
During the 14th century successive kings believed it was their right to get tolls from vessels on the Thames. The Constable of the Tower of London was allowed to demand these tolls on the king's behalf.
Among the benefits, the Constable received fees from state prisoners at the Tower and was entitled to all flotsam and jetsam on the Thames. They could keep all livestock that fell from Tower Bridge into the river and owned any passing swans. For every foot of livestock that stumbled into the Tower moat, the Constable received a penny and any cart that fell in became his property. They received 1s a year from all ships carrying herring to London; 6s 8d a year from all boats fishing for sprat between the Tower and the sea; and 2d from each pilgrim who came to London by the river to worship at the shrine of St. James.
Perhaps the most significant perk was the toll collected from ships passing up the Thames into London. Historically, goods ships travelling upstream would have to moor at Tower Wharf and unload a portion of their cargo for the Constable as a form of toll. Such bounty might have included oysters, mussels, cockles or rushes (as much as could be held within their arms), as well as kegs of rum or wine. As river traffic increased and taxes became more regulated, these payments of goods progressively reduced until they were no longer enforced.
Still today, whenever a Royal Naval vessel moors on the Wharf, the Captain must present the Constable with a barrel of wine (the ‘Dues’). This is ceremoniously escorted into the Tower by the Yeoman Warders and presented to the Constable on Tower Green.

We finish dinner and walk towards the heart of Ortigia, passing by alleys with constellations of stars above the small restaurant tables, austere churches that embrace in their squares the usual restaurants with the scent of pasta with clams, or with the spicy aroma of mussels alla tarantina. We will have to feel offended and scandalized by this swirl of candid Baroque and pasta with sardines. But it is the life that hovers in the air between the old baronial palaces and the baroque courtyards, it is the life brought by the infinite languages of the tourists that gets lost in the alleys and the yellow lamps, between the B&Bs and the empty houses, it is their curiosity, their amazement at the beauty they find there makes the heart of Ortigia beat. We arrive in the large square full of people, voices and music, surrounded by noble palaces with imposing gates where tourists wander around fascinated by time stopped in the white stone of Syracuse, crystallized in the swan-neck wrought iron columns and balconies, in the baroque mixed with the columns of the Greek temples of the cathedral with perfect shapes, in the purity of the water of the fountain of Arethusa, in scenographic perspectives drawn by the yellowish light of the street lamps. Dreams come true and the nights are dressed in soft and sweet memories. Ortigia is like a huge stage where the elegance and creativity of silence is played out in its most intimate and modern forms. The boring shouting tourists are just the extras of an eternity played out by the beauty of these stones. Everything is a past that tells of Greek tragedies, of bloody wars between Saracens and Normans, of Gattopardo Princes and of immortal art along the streets on a human scale, among the noble palaces or in the poor houses that in the dark seem to wait austere and fulfill that sun which during the day makes them shine with light, set in a fraternal and crystalline sea.

The Watercourse Culture
Values:
Beauty, Graceful, Family, Creativity
Ranks and Hierarchy
Captain is seen as more the face of the guild. Can be seen as more of a figurehead at times but typically the one behind most descions.
Monarch is the one who is in charge of the camp. Anything done for the camp, this cat is in charge of such as the nursery and repairs.
Assistant is the one who is in charge of the processes outside the camp such as patrols.
Watchers are in charge of keeping watch of the waters. Checking for floods and other signs.
Cleric are the typical doctors of the guild. Charged with the world of medicine and all things healing, especially with the access to water.
Instructors are similar to sergeants in the same vein they watch over the training process but they oversee certain aspects and divide them into hunting, fighting, diving, swimming, and crafting.
Nurses are thewho look after and care for the young of the guild.
Augars, a more common rank than the other guilds and typically high in authority due to their nature.
Cantors the one who serve through song, who fully take to their siren nature as well as providing and telling history with pleasant melodies.
Divers are the ones who go to the depths of the river for hunting. Trained to deal with the worst ways and pressure of the river.
Wrights are the builders of the guild. Cats who do construction projects and weave tools.
Veterans retired cats who have served their guild and earned their rest. They are cared for the whole guild.
Rangers isn't the most common rank by a rank nonetheless for ones who don't desire a specific field.
Succession
An assistant is chosen based on voting. It’s decided what’s best for the guild and who’s the captain, good balance is key for the guild to flow as smooth as the very river that provides for them.
A cleric (or augar) usually has the last say in this vote.
Native Prey
Various Fish (trout, pike, bass, salmon, carp, gar, etc)
Duck / Geese / Swan as well as their eggs (delicacy)
Turtles
Fish eggs (delicacy)
Frogs (rare)
Snails
Clams / Mussels (delicacy)
Trading
Shells
Water stones
Eggs
Stones
Cattails
Nets
Decoration
They typically like to decorate themselves with shells or seaweed. Seaweed is braided commonly into their tails.
A cleric wears a moss cloak, flowers are optional.
An assistant wears fish bone bracelets
A monarch wears a willow shawl with flowers of their choosing.
Body Traits
These cats are considered the fluffiest of the guilds.
Fish tails
Scales that can range from over the body to the paws (range tends to vary)
Barbels
They have webbed paws as well, polydactylism.
Fins than range from the rear to the back of the head (range tends to vary)
They have small circles like ears.
They are the third tallest of the guilds.
Their sleek fur makes it easier for them to swim as well as having an undercoat.
Cats typically can hold their breath for around 8 hours.
Naming System
Fish (Haddock-, Bream-, Trout-, Ruff-, Snapper-, Mackeral-, Tang-, etc)
Waterland plants (Reed-, Cypress-, Willow-, etc)
Waterland birds (Loon-, Swan-, Heron-, etc)
Water (Puddle-, Pool-, Rain-, Storm-, Splash-, etc)
Sound (Loud-, Song-, Chatter-, Chirp-, etc)
Waterland mammals (Otter-, Vole-, etc)
Religion
Rivals the Splinters in their general lax attitude towards the gods. The tend to show honor towards the rain and rivers an except being their founder and deity.
They’re patrons are the river, the Tiger, and Sirsha.
Holy days
Rain - a time of tranquility. A time for fun and games and a time for relaxtion. Thin-furred cats especially love it compared to their long-furred counterparts.
Sirsha’s Gleam - to them, a time to study their river and tell the tales of their founder.
Courting + Bonding
The most romantic of the guilds by far, no contest.
Typical start relationship early in life and it’s very common for a cat to have more than one partner romantic or platonic.
The process involves bringing many trinkets that display affection and appreciation. Singing or nest building is the final step to a complete courtship.
Cats are allowed to pair off with other cats but will treat any kits that result like just like their own from the usual partner(s).
Family
Cubs typically nurse the past expected time for bonding reasons. The nurses typically share the nursing, and a lot of kits are close to their suckle caretakers for this reason.
Denizens typically live in the same den as their parents and siblings until they find a partner (s) and even then, the partners might move in if there’s enough space.
Death + Burial
It’s a celebration of the life of the cat rather than a somber event. sing songs and the denizen’s family tell stories of their life.
Waterdenizens are given a river burial. They set the body on a raft decorated with flowers, shells, and trinkets. The raft is sent down the river under the light of the moon.
Other Information
To bury a waterdenizen is considered the most condemning action one cat do. Something reserved for the worst cats, traitors.
Waterdenizens speak the slowest of the guilds. They aren’t in a rush for these and like to talk with pretty words.
Students have an interesting time at gatherings when they end up nuzzling other in-training denizens and their overseers have to explain why.
Nicknames are common such as little minnow, duckling, and guppy.

Erika Blumenfeld, Tracing Luminaries: Plate No. A3657 (Jupiter), (one of a portfolio of six intaglio prints created from laser engraved cast acrylic plates inked with transparent base, printed onto a direct starlight-exposed cyanotype chine collé using Okuwara paper, bonded to Hahnemühle Copperplate backing paper, with printed ink gilded with 24-karat gold leaf), 2022 [© Erika Blumenfeld]
/ Plate Description /
Observatory: Harvard Boyden Station, Arequipa, Peru Telescope: 24-inch Bruce Doublet Date Exposed: 27 June 1899 Class: L Right Ascension: 13 hours, 54 minutes Declination: -10.3 degrees Quality: 4 Exposure: 174 minutes (shutter closed 54 minutes)
Plate Events: Marks removed (2021-02-04T14:16:43); plate not yet scanned for DASCH at the time of this printing.
Marked by: Sylvia Mussells, possibly Henrietta Swan Leavitt, plus three to four other unidentified women; the various ink types suggest that the markings span the turn of the century to 1930s/40s.
Curatorial & Astronomical Notes: This plate shows the planet Jupiter and was used to confirm the discovery of Jupiter’s 8th moon, which was later named Pasiphae. The plate jacket was notated by Sylvia Mussells indicating this plate was used in identifying 22 new galaxies, which at that time were still referred to generically as “nebula”; The plate jacket also notes, in an unidentified hand, that the plate was used in magnitude measurements at Harvard Observatory. The plate appears in Henrietta Swan Leavitt’s notebook entitled “Book XXXV: Objects looked up by Request” and is noted on pages 7 and 8, dated June 13, 1914 for research related to Jupiter’s moons. This plate survived the flood of 2016 with minimal damage to the markings.

Northshore Indigenous History
Tumblr media
Ancient Pathway: Kingsford Smith Drive
Hamilton and Breakfast Creek were recorded by Oxley as being riddled with many Aboriginal pathways, indicating it was frequently traversed.
One route went through what is now Fortitude Valley, crossing Breakfast Creek (roughly by the Abbotsford Road Bridge).
Aboriginal people were recorded often swimming over (side note: connection to water and the river is prevalent).
Side note: Developing a walkway that brings to light these ancient pathways would be an idea.
Tumblr media
The site saw extensive fishing… a visitor as early as 1836 described the entire road from Brisbane to Eagle Farm as an Aboriginal “fishing ground.”
The catch included swans, pelicans, eel, bream, whiting, bream, jewfish, flathead, mullet, eel, dolphin, river mussel and prawns.
Side note: Developing an artwork brief that brings to light Northshore’s history with the river and fishing.
Indigenous art research
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art is an expression of people’s identity, culture, spirituality and relationships to Country. It tells stories of ceremony and Creation and connects people to ancestors and kin.
The popularity of Australian First Nations art has also given rise to unethical trade and appropriation by unscrupulous people who have taken advantage of artists and the system.
The benefits of Indigenous art
Indigenous visual arts provides a means of cultural expression and are a vehicle for the maintenance and transmission of culture.
Used to promote health and wellbeing.
Improve the lives of Indigenous women and provide self esteem to young Indigenous people.
Go beyond purely economic and the quantifiable to enrich and sustain Indigenous culture.
Side note: brings light to the importance of partnering with real First Nations artists.
Aboriginal symbols
Australian Aboriginal symbols are visual forms of knowledge that express cultural intellect within a sense of place and spiritual space.
Creative expressions of knowledge are unique to each Aboriginal Nation as designs, symbols, techniques, and mediums are bound within customary laws associated to Creational periods.
Tumblr media
One of the most common symbols used is the circle, which represents cosmological aspects of cultural space and spiritual space…
Indicate forms of sacredness; expressions of connections to cultural place within mind, body, and emotions.
Side note: Cameron's article discusses the misinterpretations between these symbols and non-Indigenous people. It is important to provide information that correctly identifies the meaning of the artwork. Emphasising deep insight that influences cultural place and spiritual space in being connections. Once again emphasising the importance of partnering with real Indigenous artists.

ART OF SEAFOOD 🐟 // finally tried dinner at @artofseafood with beautiful Swan River views. Menu on last two pics. Ordered the following: - Scallops & bone marrow: Charred corn, furikake, edamame & port jus $35 - ½ Moons Shrimp & scallops: Lobster curry dressing & baby coriander $24 - Squid ink Spaghetti: Tiger prawns, crab meat, mussels, scallop & seared salmon $46 - Black & White: Kingfish, Beluga lentils, truffle oil, Moso, creme fraiche & baby coriander $58 Favourites were the first two share plates: the scallops and bone marrow and the shrimp and lobster dumplings - the sauces were intense and exceeded our expectations. That perhaps set the bar too high and we found the mains to be not as good. Don’t get me wrong though, mains were good but just not as good as the share plates. The complimentary seared tuna as the starter was delicious too. Save this place for a special occasion or just a spontaneous dinner you can look forward to - you do you. 😉 #ArtOfSeafood #FineDining #Seafood #PerthSeafood #Perth #PerthFineDining #PerthFoodReview #PFR_Seafood #PFR_ArtOfSeafood (at ArtofSeafood) https://www.instagram.com/p/CldaEJVPt2k/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

NOTES FROM TRAVELS PAST #2 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Today, I’m inspired to share more notes from my journal entries during adventures past… this entry comes from Estonia, and is accompanied by a photo from New Zealand 💦 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “A droplet of water on a leaf. Three thistles. Heavy storm clouds. A thousand swans. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The sounds of sheep. Roosters. Ocean as it greets the shore. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ A feather in the sand. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It’s okay to appreciate something without needing to hold onto it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Swans beating their heavy wings against the air. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Two children skipping across giant stones. “Tere!” “Hello!” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Empty campground. Bicycle propped against the low pine. Mosaic of small, water-worn stones that range through all the peaches, grays, and butters of the color wheel. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Pungent salt air, brine so heavy the breeze tastes like mussels. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Chirps, and cheeps, and little purple flowers, and mustard lichen on the stone. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Wood smoke, which you drink in as though it’s what your body most needs; is thirsty for above all else. Intoxicates and reminds you of other lands so far away. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ How strange to be here and nowhere else. Like the rest of the world no longer exists. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ There is nothing else. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ There is nowhere else. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We are all the wind, the sand, the sea.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 📝 from Kihnu Island, Estonia 📷 from Piha Beach, New Zealand ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ (at Piha Beach) https://www.instagram.com/p/CinTdc9J9W7/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The Swan Inn
After Laurie & Lisa’s terrible day with another flat tire, we went out for dinner. First we tried the Mulberry Inn just down the hill. The PYT (pretty young thing) at reception asked if we had a reservation. No reservation? No luck. Then we drove a tad further to the local pub The Swan Inn in Pontfadog.

Laurie and I had the lamb shepherd pie and Lisa had trout & mussels. The food was wonderful and filling. The gin and tonic wasn’t too bad either 😉

Yup, they served the G&T in a wineglass. Kinda weird but it worked just fine 😁

Dogs in the bar? Check. Warm food and warm people inside? Check. Horses parked outside? Priceless 😂 The black horse was a Welsh cob. An ancient breed native to Wales. I was thrilled to meet one. And both horses were pulling sulkies (two-wheeled carts). So the owners had ridden down to the Swan for their daily ale. Actually, that might be a great way to see Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿
