Last episode's exploration of the abandoned Bamseom facility does raise so many questions.

Whose idea is that monster-human project? Who is the man the mysterious girl claimed as the leader actually is? How Wui-myeong played part in the project? How they get so many people to be the test subjects/lab rats? Do they regularly hunt people outside and bring them there as lab rats, like how Yong-seok ended up there after searching for his girl's medicine? Are the rest of survivors outside the stadium mostly being stuck there? How the fuck Hyun-su is not aware of those people? What/who the fuck are beings inside those cocoons?

This may be super obvious but I’ve never seen anyone discuss this before… in 2x08, the exact same episode where the “Captain Strand/Call me Owen” thing starts… a theme that is continued literally throughout the rest of the season consistently— we see Carlos very easily say “ Hey Gwyn.” Literally the first time we ever see their characters interact he’s calling her by her first name. Like. It hits me in the feels so much. It’s clear that Carlos is struggling to separate his relationship with Owen as one of an authority figure that he interacts with professionally and as his boyfriends father. Carlos very clearly was taught to hold an utmost respect for authority. He calls his father “sir” in most professional situations, which we have NEVER seen TK do. The most we see from TK is “cap” sometimes, I think. But Carlos is clearly very concerned about people viewing him in a professional light and he does a lot to maintain that. So it makes sense that he would struggle to drop that around Owen, even when they are in a casual setting in his own home. I also love that Owen doesn’t let him get away with it, and continues to push for him to call him by his first name. Owen clearly likes and admires Carlos ( a stark contrast to how he reacted to Alex in the pilot) and I like that he continues to try to make Carlos feel comfortable around him. However, by contrast he does not seem to feel the same need to call Gwyn “ Ms Morgan” for example. The added professional layer to his relationship with Owen is obviously the main factor there. I just find it so sweet how he calls Gwyn by her first name— it makes me feel an added layer of warmth to their relationship that I love :)

Today in honour for Narlie Appreciation Week I started series of posts about Heartstopper and Nick & Charlie moments. Because of season 2 arrived not so long ago I will be tried focusing on this season.

Day one - favourite episode - 2x08 - Perfect

Right now for me is hard to say which episode is my favourite because I watched whole season one time. And I think that Heartstopper is series when only when you rewatched several times you fully understand what going on and noticed important details.

But final of this season really perfect. By the way is the title of this episode. It's started from Nick coming out in Instagram. And of my favourite songs of the songtrack " Colours of you" playing in the background. And finished with serious conversation between Nick and Charlie about experience that he prefers to forget but he can't.

Also this episode includes so many sweet little moments:

Tao and Elle officially became boyfriend and girlfriend

Paris Squard helped Tara in preparation decorations for prom

Tao and Nick conversation about Tao's dad losing and that Charlie never talked with each of them about bullying experience

Imogen moment of realization when she saw Sahar on the stage

Tara and Darcy conversation about Darcy's scaring of coming out to her parents and that's why she fears that Tara don't see her complete

It's all that i remembered. And so many moments I fogot but they are all amazing.

For me this final episode give feeling that even if you have problems they can be solved, they are not gonna be forever with you. And little help from your friends will always help you

The man is back and better than ever (well kinda but whatever). So here I come with 2x08 and 2x09 but tumblr sucks so this is 1/2, anyway. He got into the house took his pills, immediately went out on a smoke and screamed to me ‘he was right! Who the fuck made that rule about smoking in hospitals?!’ Came back and said ‘cmon loser!’ He silently groaned for 5 minutes until the locker room scene and yelled ‘BRIAN YOU BEAUTIFUL BASTARD, YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCH I MISSED YOU!’ He is now watching Mikey and Ben and goes ‘*loud groan* for the love of Beyoncé, please tell me this dude isn’t THIS boring the whole time? If his whole thing is Buddha and HIV, i am gonna hate it here’ cut to the club scene ‘JUSTIN YOU BEAUTIFUL RASCAL! I MISSED YOU SO MUCH! of course my boy can spot a rolex the second he sees it! Attaboy!’…’OH BEN IN A CLUB? Maybe he isn’t boring! *ben takes his shirt off* what a whore, i like it *raises his soda as a cheers*’ and now the introduction scene happened and he almost had a stroke ‘Well of course he’s positive, he studied Buddha and all that crap. And you just complimented him so obviously he’s happy, why are you so bitc- *pauses the ep and is silent for a sec* YOU MOTHERFUCKER YOU MEAN POSITIVE AS IN HIV?! I love that episode, the part of their journey where they both fail to communicate with each other properly and each house insecurities about the relationship. I'm a slut for angst so I kinda enjoy it though it is painful :(

Back to your point though, yes that is a sweet sentiment because at this point Brian has already told Justin that he wants him to stay because he loves him in so many words and that he'll always come home to him, he's more open about them being together rather than the strict "you're not my boyfriend, fuck relationships" angle he had in S1 💕

The part about this that really makes my heart soar and why I love one Brian Kinney so much is that Brian still wants Justin to live and experience life. He's not telling him to go to the party because he doesn't want him around but because he wants him to have fun with friends his age, get drunk, be dumb and go through that right of passage as a young teen-soon to be adult like he did in his younger days with Mikey. What makes it even more painful and shows the depth of Brian's love is that when Michael eventually tells him that Justin is sleeping with someone else, Brian tells him he knows. Even though Justin is technically lying to him, not that Brian would mind if he came home and said he fucked someone, hell Brian would be pleased and ask him all about it! He says he wants him to fuck others, he's only nineteen so he'll act like he doesn't know what he's doing if that's what Justin wants as long as he's happy.

It's only when he finds out that it's one person ie Ethan that he becomes rightfully angry and heartbroken because that is cheating according to their rules.

Awe that is actually so thoughtful of you. But yes it was just like being slapped in the face. This is such a non significant thing but I got really excited because I saw that we share birthday and I never read about a celeb with my birthday, then boom!. Then finding out he has such young kids, man. And yes, like you say I just got a new obsession and I'm going to be honest, Aram was on of the biggest reasons for me enjoying it so much, so I'm not 100% sure if I want to continue, but it may just like you say take some time to digest that he won't be back because I for sure have not accepted that. He played it so freaking well, that line between seeing that he is a mob guy who does bad things but also has a sweet nature to him. Because usually in this series either they do too much on one, and the sweetness doesn't feel genuine. But I think bringing up his background and then Thory/Nadia working together is a good way to continue it without him. I mean I do agree with you that I liked in S2 that it wasn't like "Oh so Thory and Arman are together now" but we got to see them grew a stronger bond. But, that scene where they are alone, they are both not in a relationship anymore and he says he doesn't want to leave her alone. Like man, that deserved a kiss haha. That seems like a very healthy take, like I do like most of the plots but somethings gets a bit too much for me, and also as a health care professional, man some of those bug the hell out of me like they do when there is any medicine involved on screen. Like there is noooo way you could use a ventilator in a chapel, you need to connect it to oxygen flow. But in those cases, I just make up my own stories in my head and pretend that is what happened haha and I'm happy.

Haha oh man the amount of ranting I have done about the medical stuff in this show... Thony's resus of Kamdar in his club in 2x10 is the pinnacle for me, like omg how many things can be portrayed incorrectly in just one single scene. But because I love this show so much I generally just do my best to turn my medical brain off and just roll with whatever happens whenever I watch it, mostly for my own sanity haha

I can definitely relate to what you said about the scene in 2x08 with the two of them alone at her house... I think I even read somewhere that the writers considered having Armony hook up in that scene, but then obviously ultimately decided against it. Tbh given that he then has to go back to Nadia only hours later, I'm actually kinda glad they didn't do anything more than hug! Still, I've got a fic or two drafted about an alternative version of that scene, and hopefully I'll eventually get around to posting them one day lol.

I also agree 100% that the show did an amazing job with creating Arman's character, and keeping that realistic balance of hard exterior and soft heart. I have a genuine love for all the main characters in this show, but Arman really captured me, and he quickly became one of my favourite characters of all time. And of course Adan did an incredible job portraying him, and his chemistry with Elodie was just off the charts. The show will absolutely never be the same without Arman/Adan, and that's something I'm still coming to terms with.

And I don't think it's silly that you were excited about sharing something in common with Adan; I think that having innocent little connections like that to the people behind the media we love is absolutely part of the fun, though the flip side to that is that if something bad happens with them, it can feel more personal. I encountered Adan on a plane once in 2022, and now what was once an awesome and delightful memory just makes me sad. And of course the fact that he was so young and had such little kids has been a really challenging aspect of it for all of us, because no matter our specific family circumstances, a loss like that hits a little too close to home.

Anyway, regardless of whether you do watch s3, if you're ever missing Arman you can always come over to Ao3 and find him there. At least in fic he can live on ❤

Okay, I think about this often. And would love the people of tumblr’s opinion, ya know… #forscience. And also because I know the show has taken some liberties with timelines etc when it comes to the show vs the books which are littered with exact dates.

Season 2 of Outlander, when Jamie sends Claire back through the stones, he knew she was pregnant again. He’d known for weeks. WHEN do you think he realized?!

Now hear me out, in 2x08 (The Fox’s Lair) Jamie and Claire have returned home to Lallybroch shortly after the loss of Faith. We get this beautiful scene of Jamie, and one of the best bits of prose/monologue from Jenny as her and Claire watch Jamie with his new niece.

“You can pour out your heart to them without choosing your words, or holding anything back at all. And that’s a comfort to the soul. It’s the way we talk to them before they are born, you know.”

“Yes, I know.”

“A man has to wait until the child is born. And then they hold their bairn and feel all the thinks that might be and all the things that might never be. And weep, not knowing which ones will come to pass.”

*Sigh* In my opinion Jamie and Claire conceived Brianna at some point during their time at Lallybroch. To have conceived her in the place they both love and regain comfort following the loss of Faith feels right to me as a fan. So I am going to continue on believing that’s what happened, even if we have no concrete way of knowing. In the books it definitely happened later, but this is the show and a girl can dream 😂

In 2x09 (Je Suis Pret) I assume it’s been a few weeks since they left Lallybroch, and roughly 2-3ish months(?) since they left France and returned to Scotland. This is also episode where Claire experiences severe PTSD and flashbacks to her time as a nurse in the war. Similar to how she was under severe stress in “To Ransom A Man’s Soul”, she has panic attacks, throws up, and Jamie notices she is not completely herself. As a viewer while watching “To Ransom a Man’s Soul”, we assume it’s soley her stress and worry that is causing her physical reaction, when in reality she was also experiencing morning sickness. The same could possibly be said in this episode, although it is never confirmed outright for us.

We get this sweet scene where Jamie apologizes for bringing Claire to the front lines, and promises that he will see that she is safe and that they will get through this together no matter what. I think that at this point, Jamie knows or at least suspects Claire might be pregnant. In this scene in particular, his face is so open and optimistic, a man with hope for their future being rewritten (and possibly with the chance to have another child together??)

This is reiterated to me in this later scene where Jamie and Claire discuss her PTSD. Jamie tells Claire that she does not need to fight this war, and that he will have Rupert send her home to Lallybroch with Fergus. Jamie knows Claire would never willingly go and leave him there alone. I also think that ideally he always wants her by his side for support, at least until the battle of Culloden actually begins. So to me, there’s no other reason Jamie would be insisting Claire be sent home other than to remove Claire and their unborn child from the triggers that are upsetting her so much and put them in harm. I wouldn’t blame him if he thought that putting her in stress like she has been in during “Faith” would be unwise.

Ultimately Claire refuses to go home (as expected) and later that night Jamie and the troops successfully perform the commando raid thanks to her quick thinking. As always, Jamie and Claire are stronger together than apart. The episode ends with them meeting Charles Stewart’s army.

Which is when we get this scene in 2x10 (Prestonpans) which I have always found to be one of the most tender and beautiful. Jamie comes back from this battle and looks at Claire in a way that is so heartbreaking. Almost as if he can’t believe she is there standing in front of him. It’s the look of a man whose life flashed before his eyes, and who is grateful to see another day. I know he’s emotional every time something happens between him and Claire, but this look felt different to me. It felt like he was extra relieved to be holding her and his family in his arms one last time before things truly fall apart at Culloden. Again, my interpretation, did anyone else get this vibe?

In 2x11 (Vengeance is Mine) we get another wonderful scene where Jamie prays in Gaelic for Claire and the “child that she may one day bear.” I think this can be interpreted in two ways:

1. Jamie hopes one day she may be able to get pregnant again and have another child (even if that means it’s in the future, since he says one day bear implying in the future). The first time I watched this show that’s what I thought was happening, that he was praying that they/she might be able to conceive again in the future following the heartbreak of losing Faith.

2., Alternatively, Jamie already knows Claire is pregnant and is praying that this baby is born healthy and lives when/if he sends her back. Both are equally heartbreaking and I think Sam acts this entire scene so beautifully, I mean look at his face and all the emotions he’s able to convey; love, fear, sadness, and still maintaining a brave face for his wife. His eyes are so expressive. There is a part of him that knows it’s a risk he might be killed in battle, these thoughts had to be going through his mind. If he’s not alive to care for them, he’s prayed for her and their child’s protection.

Then we finally arrive at the moment before Culloden when Jamie takes Claire back to the stones, and Jamie asks her how long she’s known. Claire says not long, and that reiterates to me that it’s only been a few weeks since she missed her period and like the viewers, had chalked up her symptoms to stress. It’s one of the most romantic scenes of this show when Jamie admits he’s been tracking her cycle this entire time, and if I didn’t love his character before I was head over heals for him after this scene! I’m curious how long he’d known, and if he realized long before her or around the same time as her. These are the details I love and need.

HSMTMTS 2x06 Review

Yes, And was a messy ep that brings us to the halfway point of the season. Let’s dig in!

Tonight took some big steps towards the Rini breakup. The conflict isn’t quite earned as they did too much too quickly in making Ricky overbearing; to go from Ricky supporting Nini going to YAC and them singing love songs to each other just 3 eps ago to Ricky now accusing Nini of changing because she didn’t get pineapple on her pizza just doesn’t work. Largely that’s because it’s clear that the writers are working backwards from an outline that requires Rini to be broken up before the finale.

The Rose song is great and Olivia’s vocals are wonderful as always but again it’s not quite earned. The lyrics make it seem like Nini thinks Ricky is holding her on a pedestal and holding her back when that’s not what we’ve seen on screen. Ricky and Nini went through a lot as they were finding their way back to each other and they learned not to see each other through rose coloured glasses and while Ricky was sad that Nini went to YAC he was supportive and respected her wishes, notably the only time he admitted how much he wanted Nini to come back to Salt Lake was after Nini had already made up her mind to return.

Rini was always going to break up both because writers struggle with writing happy or stable couples and because Tim became enamoured of Rina after writing 1x05 and will want to explore them at some point. Tim’s claimed that he has future seasons all planned out but I’m skeptical that he’s really thought out how to keep Ricky and Nini and Gina on goodish terms with each other for the remaining 2 seasons of the show while also not completely closing the door on the Rini endgame the show’s been aiming towards since the pilot.

It’s clear that Ricky has unresolved issues from his mom effectively abandoning him which are impairing all his relationships. And while it’s true he could try calling Lynne it’s the parents job to reach out and she is obviously fine living her life without Ricky. Not sure how much closure we can get with Lynne when she comes back in 2x09 but I hope we at least get an apology on her part.

Yet another ep of Gina going through it. That flashback to Gina tearfully telling Ricky that she wouldn’t have ‘’given up on us’’ if she hadn’t moved certainly paints Ricky’s behaviour this season in a worse light. I do hope the show doesn’t take the cowards way out and have Ricky being too stupid to realize that Gina had romantic feelings for him. Though again we run into the problem that these emotions aren’t fitting the story. There really wasn’t an ‘us’ for Gina to fight for, she and Ricky had only been hanging from 1x05-1x08 and never actually dated or went on dates. Also by this point Gina should be questioning her feelings for Ricky and whether he’s worth it; it’s not like he’s done anything nice for her this season like getting her chocolates for Valentine’s Day. 

Still Gina did make some strides tonight. She finally opened up to Ashlyn which seems to have lifted a weight off of her shoulders and makes the decision to stay in Salt Lake. She also brushes off Ricky wanting to be improv partners which leads to her accepting EJ’s offer which led to a sweet callback to them being wonderstudies. I’m glad she’s not going to Louisiana but it does mean we were robbed of a HSMTMTS/Secrets of Sulphur Springs crossover. 

Kourtney and Howie are finally together. I’m glad they didn’t waste time dragging this out. Kourtney’s confession was very in character and I liked the earlier hufflepuff dragging. As an aside I wonder if say 10 years in the future, shows will still be making light hearted unqualified references to Harry Potter or will J.K. Terfling have completely destroyed the goodwill the series has by then.

Lily continues to act as if she’s in Glee working for Sue Sylvester to take down the One Directions and honestly I’m here for it. I especially liked that she stole some of the condiments on her way out of Salt Lake Slices. Antoine seems alright, the espionage bit was funny. Seems like Salt Lake City would be a pretty shitty place for a French student to study.

EJ remains underused especially since this is his last semester as a student. His Gaston answer was surprisingly thoughtful and hinted at him getting over Nini with Gina as he sat down next to her. His may I have this exercise was just the right amount of smooth and goofy. 

Ashlyn had a good ep, she killed Home, Julia has a great voice. And she stood her ground with Gina but was also there for her and managed to help her decide to stay. Loved her line that she was still part Caswell.

Mike Bowen is sweet, thoughtful, and rocking that beard? Must have been hard for Miss. Jenn to let him go but ultimately she made the right decision as it would just be too messy to date the parent of one of your students.

Lots of funny little moments this ep; the camera panning to the exit sign during Gina’s confessional, the group chat with Miss. Jenn and the real group chat without her, Seb hula-hooping with wild abandon. 

Looking Ahead:

Well we’re now at the official halfway mark of the season. It’s been an uneven first half, lots of pacing issues, and clear signs of the covid pandemic impacting production. Disney + has announced that future seasons of Disney + originals will be released on Wednesdays from now on so we have that to look forward to for S3 and S4.

Carlos uploading the Rose song will inevitably lead to disaster. Nini is very right to tell Kourtney not to let Ricky know, the lyrics paint him in a very bad light. The song gives us more context for why Lily said to Ricky that his gf needed some space in the trailer. I suspect Lily will end up being the party crasher that Ricky re-evaluates in 2x12, I don’t think Tim is going to keep Lily as a one dimensional antagonist this entire season. 

Ricky said in 2x01 that he’s never breaking up with Nini again and I think that’s true because Nini will break up with him. I think it comes before 2x12, maybe them exploring an old haunt in 2x08 is where it happens though the description for 2x11 also sounds like it could be hinting at a Rini breakup.

Well we now know what one of the secrets rising between Gina and Nini will be in 2x10, Nini was already jealous of Gina and Ricky in S1 and I doubt she’ll enjoy hearing that Gina confessed to Ricky in 1x10. Since Gina has already confessed to Ricky it makes it less likely that her speaking her truth in 2x12 is related to her and Ricky. 

EJ and Gina doing the morning announcements starts next ep, that should be fun. Especially since Mazzara is aware of EJ’s feelings for Gina. There’s a pretty clear path to end the season with Portwell or at least set it up for S3. EJ already likes Gina, the announcements help bring them closer, Gina starts getting over Ricky and realizes that EJ puts her first,  maybe Mazzara helps one or both of them at the cast party, and Gina shares her truth and confesses to EJ. So far the show hasn’t done anything it can’t pull back from but sooner or later the writing will have to commit one way or the other. One thing I’ll say is that it’s already clear that making EJ a senior was a big mistake and I expect it to cause a lot more problems for the show in the remaining two seasons.

There’s also a path for Ricky and Gina to get together but that seems less likely given the clear mess Ricky is right now. Seeing his mom in 2x09 probably helps a bit but it’s hard to see how any relationship Ricky gets into won’t swiftly crash and burn. There’s also the matter of when exactly Rini break up, if it’s too late in the season then there wouldn’t be time to jump right into Rina. There’s also the matter of the unexpected facetime call he gets in 2x10 and the party crasher he re-evaluates in 2x12. Even if they’re not linked it does suggest there will be some curveballs in Ricky’s story and at least the party crasher info suggests there’s some non Rini or Rina related twist being planned for Ricky in 2x12.

1/2 We all know 2.09 is a great epi for PW so I jus wanna point out a few things I noticed. Gina says shes no damsel in distress and that she grew up in airports. Soon after the Zoom call, EJ calls G to check up on her but excuses it as needing a 2nd opinion. When EJ picks her up at the end he never makes it seem like he has to save her. He goes about it so casually b/c he knows she may not NEED help but she might WANT it. Even w/o that grand gesture, when she gets caught in a lie by the gate...

2/2 agent, EJ is able to put her in a better mood instantly. G spends the whole day stuck at the airport carrying her own lit/meta baggage, w/ some help from Jack, but EJ is the one to carry that weight for her by the day's end w/o having to be asked. He doesnt even take jus the big suitcase, he takes b/. And he doesnt wait for Gs gratitude b/c he doesnt need it. He left his day of carefree fun to be there for her to carry her burden.😭 The roles reversed in a way from 2.08 when G helped him.

I totally agree that EJ must've known that Gina wanted help. After all, I'm pretty sure that's why she posted that Insta story of having to Uber home. Gina doesn't ask for help easily but often hints at how she's feeling or what she's struggling with when she wants people to notice what's up with her. She did that in 2A a lot when she hadn't talked about what happened with Ricky with anyone yet and when she was considering going home. EJ didn't pick up on her hint that she was leaving when he interviewed her in 2x05, but the fact that he picked up on how she was feeling when she posted that Insta story in 2x09 shows how much closer they got inbetween those episodes 🥺 And it's such a normal thing for him to show up like that for the people he cares about. He doesn't do that to feel better about himself or for the way it makes him look to others (like you said, he doesn't wait for her gratitude). He just does it because that's what you should do for the people who matter to you. "Gotta look out for your peeps." And while he doesn't see it as saving Gina, she definitely saw it that way and said so in 2x10 🥺

Him instantly making her feel better during that video call is so sweet! I love that while he seemingly called her to ask her something, he started the convo by how she was doing (and asked her so in a jokey way to make her laugh and hopefully feel better about her crappy day) and then complimented her when she said she was stuck at the airport and in character. It shows us how closely he pays attention to her and how much he cares about making her feel better. Ashly had to remind him why he called her in the first place, probably cause she knew EJ would go on like this for the entire call if she didn't 😂 It wouldn't surprise me if he just used that question as an excuse to call Gina, though, like you suggested.

The symbolism behind EJ carrying Gina's baggage is so beautiful! Like you said, she spent the day carrying that around herself. Jack taught her new ways of carrying that alone, but it was EJ who actually lifted that burden from her. It always looks to me like he only took the large bag since Gina seems to still have her hand on the other bag as we zoom in on her, but I could be wrong about that. Either way, I love the symbolism of him helping her carry her (emotional) baggage 🥺 Just like she does the same for him by being the one to wear the Duke sweatshirt. Which plays into the role reversal from 2x08 that you mentioned.

On the one hand, I’ve been waiting to do this list for ages. There are so many good fics! (This list is gonna be long.) But on the other hand, this made me realise I’m 2/3 of the way through the whole Peggysous tag on AO3. What will I do when I run out ;A;

This list takes us through the fics from some time pre-Endgame to some months after S2. 

You think I don't love you? Oh, but I do. by mariebittersea. Extended cut of the 2x10 kiss from Daniel’s POV. Very sweet.

Our own steps by irisdouglasiana. Post-S2 sickfic. Do you know how hard it is to find a Peggy sickfic. This is very soft and fluffy, just some gentle feelings. Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy :)

Homecoming by irisdouglasiana. Short multi-chapter. Vignettes from pre-S1 to post-S2 established relationship. Very lovely to see two people ending up together after going through hell.

we survive (that is our curse) by TolkienGirl. S1E1 pre-relationship ficlet. Short, mildly angsty reflection on the war. I like how this fic establishes their bond from early on.  

Fairy God-something by LadyKes. Married Peggysous with Team Carter…chaotic energy. Peggy and Daniel arrive home to find their front door unlocked.

The Pen is Mightier by truth_renowned. Peggysous and Jack, featuring some very interesting and rather risque novelty stationery. (I was reading this in a cafe and it took all my energy not to just lol.)

Grade Under Pressure by sheron. 20k-word multi-chapter. Team Carter with background Peggysous. Daniel finds out about Okinawa. (I almost hesitate to put this in a PS rec list, since the relationship is quite background. But it’s tagged so, and this fic is really good. So.)

Agent by CaptainStevieGraceRogers. 3k-word multi-chapter, unfinished. Genderbent Peggysous. Pre-S1. This honestly hurts to read because now Sousa gets the double whammy of shitty behaviour in the SSR, but I haven’t read genderbend in YEARS and this is interesting.

The Game, series by truth_renowned. Some rather hot smut fics.

Rivers in Time by geekruminations and truth_renowned. 16k-word multi-chapter, AC x AOS crossover. A mysterious device sends Coulson, May, and Jemma back in time. All I can say is, if you like the dynamics in AOS 7x03 and 7x04, and also like Agent Carter and Peggysous, READ THIS.

Coming in from the Cold by Sholio. Borrowing the original summary: “It's Christmas 1955, and Peggy and Daniel get an unexpected visitor.” (AOS, I love you, but you can pry 1955 from this fic’s cold dead hands.)

The First Time for the Rest of Our Lives by Kar98k. Smut. Virgin!Peggy. This might be the first virgin Peggy fic I’ve seen...ever. This is a really sweet (and hot) fic, and I really appreciate the break from the fandom norms.

Dreams Are What You Make of Them by truth_renowned. Humour with a smut epilogue. Pre-S2. Peggy has a dream and Angie is a little shit.

A Lady of Value by Eienvine. 148k-word multi-chapter. REGENCY AU. Ohmygod. I maintain that every ship must have their own Regency/P&P AU, and this one is marvellous (pun intended). Largely adapted from AC S1, featuring S2 cameos, fake relationship, and these two being the oblivious and pining idiots that we love. Could not put this down at all. Incredible research, a lot of great references, definitely reads like a regency novel. Wonderful work.

Max + Identity in Season 2

In the pilot, when Max self-identifies who he is to Liz, he tells her, "I'm a son, I'm a brother, I'm a cop...I'm just a guy from Roswell." All of those pieces of his self identity are systematically destroyed in Season 2, to the point where in the season finale he's grasping onto the last thing he feels like might be real about himself -- his role as the savior. A role that he scoffed at before his death, that he didn't really seem to believe, until all of the things he did believe about himself were gone. And then he loses that too, upon the discovery that he's not the only one, that he lacks any form of individuality. That Jones is just like him.

We get our first hint that this is coming in 2x05 when Rosa and Isobel get a glimpse inside Max's mindscape. They are literally traveling through the dying remnants of Max's mind, watching as these pieces of him are slowly fading away. There are three key visual clues in these scenes that give us insight into how he sees himself.

Most obviously, in his mindscape he is fully dressed in his Sheriff's Department uniform. This is the self-identity that he projects to the outside world in Season 1. There are many good metas out there about the layers behind that. How he takes his hat off when he's not on the job because he doesn't feel he deserves it. But all in all, his internal self image is the deputy that the public sees. I’ll add a link below to one where Mo and I were discussing this.

He is surrounded by Liz. And slowly losing her. This could be (and is) a meta all on its own about his psyche in general. He said it himself in 1x03 when he told her that he loves her. "That's what everything is about for me!" And this is the visual embodiment of it. His internal identity completely encompassed and consumed by his memories of Liz and all the things that represent her for him. And yes, their slow degredation are a literal representation. Of his memories of her slowly disappearing, but I also definitely would argue that it's exposing his deepest fear as well - that she'll leave him again.

And of course, he is chained to the floor. We are still, at this point in the season, just getting a glimpse at the layers of trauma hidden within his subconscious, but this is a direct look inside of him and his trauma is right there staring him in the face. These are hidden scars that he hasn't even begun yet to discover, but slowly begin to reveal themselves throughout Season 2b. And I expect will be prevalent in Season 3 as well.

The progression of Max's identity crisis started from the moment he woke up, with a portion of his self literally erased through the loss of his memories of Liz. A lot was made of the sweetness of him telling her at the end of the episode "I am not whole without you." But in a sense that statement could have been almost a thesis for his character arc in Season 2. He spends the entire season not whole, losing little pieces of himself one by one until he's not sure who he is at the end of 2x13.

Once his memory returned in 2x06, it briefly seemed like Max was back to normal, but that quickly got undercut in the opening scene of the next episode when it was first hinted at that he shouldn't be using his powers anymore. In 2x07 it was suggested that Liz was just being overly cautious, but her fears were proved to be accurate in 2x08 when Max does use his powers and immediately suffers chest pain. Its a physical reaction to his powers that's further emphasized in 2x12 when he almost dies trying to kill Flint. Nothing was explicitly stated, but I still speculate he had a full on heart attack in that moment, or that the pacemaker briefly failed, given how hard it was to resuscitate him. But without his powers, he's not complete as an alien anymore.

In 2x09 he loses what he thought he understood about his own origin story. Sheriff Valenti's version of the incident in the group home not only undercut certain facts about himself that he always had believed to be true - that he was the solid, stable one. That he was the strong one. Suddenly he's being told that he's the traumatized one, that he's the one with the behavioral pattern of being a loose cannon.

He loses his job. Okay, officially he quit in 2x07 to search for Jenna, but let's be honest here...if he hadn't quit, then he certainly would have lost his job when Sheriff Valenti arrested him in 2x09. We saw in his mindscape and heard from his lips in the pilot how strongly he identifies as a cop. But now that uniform, and that identity, have literally been stripped away from him...and replaced with a new uniform, sexy Wild Pony bartender man!

So, we have him stripped of his identity as an alien with powers, stripped of his identity as a cop. And in 2x10 he gets stripped of his identity within his family, when he learns that he and Isobel are not related. All of those self-identified aspects of himself have disintegrated, and he's left floundering to figure out who he is without those things. Which is why he begins to throw himself into trying to regain his memories, potentially even at the expense of his health through the use of the serum. Because he is so desperate to find a truth about himself to hold on to.

But that journey is also doomed to undercut him. One of my favorite musical moments of Season 2 is the second time he experiences a memory flash triggered by his own reflection, at the end of 2x10, with the cover of Bullet With Butterfly Wings playing over the scene. @echoapothecary did a great set on this scene right after the episode aired... link below.

I think in the moment we were supposed to take the visual flash at face value and assume that this was about Max's trauma from being imprisoned as a child, but on rewatch (and frankly, listening to the song over and over and over…) I really think the choice was more about identity, and foreshadowing the reveal of Jones as a mirror, clone, relative, something….to Max?

While in the middle of the S2 experience, one of my favorite gif sets that @maxortecho made for me was this idea of Max, and people constantly cutting him down, while Liz loved him regardless of those things (linked below). At the time I was really focusing on him and his reaction to being constantly told he was a let down. Add to that the appearance of Diego in 2x10, and Max isn’t even trying to hide his low self esteem and feelings of insecurity anymore. But take those constant undercuts and add to it the tidal wave of an identity crisis as all of the things you believe to be true about yourself fall apart, and we're left with the Max we see in the last couple episodes of Season 2. A man on a mission, manic and desperate to figure out who he is now, exacerbated by the fact that he's literally on drugs (the serum).

Only then, in his desperate, manic state, does he find himself willing to believe the implausible (to him) reveal at the end of Season 1 that he might be the Savior. Because it's the last thing that makes him unique, that makes him feel like he has a role, a purpose…until he loses that too at the end of the episode when they release Jones, a literal copy of himself, from his prison.
