[The moon shone down brightly that night, casting eerie blue-tinted shadows over everything in its wake and illuminating the surrounding landscape. Within his motel room, Morton Finkel slept soundly, if not snoring like a foghorn then drooling into his pillow slightly. The deadbolt was latched securely upon the door, any entrance or exit into the room securely shut as Mort snoozed. All was peaceful. All was normal.

Until midnight hit.

At the peak of the moon's cycle through the sky, unseen and unnoticed by any except for it and the stars, Mort suddenly and yet fluidly sat up in bed, his head cocked as though he was listening to something that only he could hear. When he spoke, it was in a low, drawling whisper, so unlike his usual baritone that it likely would have made anyone present to see him shudder impulsively.]

Where.....to......

[To the untrained eye, Mort would appear as though he was sleep-walking. The strange, shuffling way that he emerged from the bed and started making his way towards the door of the motel room would be familiar to anyone who had experienced such a sight personally, as would the way that his eyes were open but not truly seeing--but there were subtle, unsettling differences. The way his eyes seemed to be glowing different colors, subtly but still there--blue, then green, then a faint shade of red before cycling through them again. The way that he did not open the door or even attempt to in his dazed state, but simply held a hand out, an unseen force detaching the deadbolt from its lock and simply swinging the door open for him as he stepped out.

For a moment, he stood there in the moonlight, head still cocked slightly as though listening to or receiving information from an unknown source. And then he was off and walking, albeit still at the slow and shuffling pace that he'd started from.

Entire hours could have passed by. Entire miles could have fallen away under his feet. It was of little consequence to Mort, who seemed to react to no outside stimuli whatsoever, continuing to stride forward almost numbly. By some miracle, he managed to avoid harm while crossing crosswalks, city streets, and whatever else he came across, eventually arriving within the lot of an old and abandoned church. The dilapidated nature of the structure--the way that its once proud wooden structure was now splintering and falling apart, the way ivy snaked up its walls, the way the doors hung ajar--seemed to matter little to the dentist as he stepped forward, as he stepped into the altar and up to the abandoned pulpit. He simply laid his hands upon a small tome that sat upon its surface, remaining eerily still as his eyes continued to cycle through their colors and a subtle glow built upon the surface of the book.

Eventually, Mort jolted away. Put his hands down. Whispered out in his low voice again--only this time, voices answered him back.]
