A large, beautiful (possibly gravid) Platycryptus undatus I found in my house a few years ago 🥰 she was so friendly and curious and looked right up at the camera! I took her outside to release her and fed her a small fly before she went on her way.
I have been working HARD to get over my knee-jerk fear of spiders. The fact that the spiders we have found the MOST in our home are tan jumping spiders has helped with this a LOT. They are unusually social and chill and... actually ARE pretty darn cute as far as spiders go. SO, since I don't really have a lot of supporting characters in the strip, I decided to kind of bunch up all the spider's we've found into one adorkable jumper.
There has been a development. I’ve added some mossed wood from my backyard to the terrarium for some added hide-y places and such for the Citizens of Terry. And… there’s a new occupant.
They look like this. This is a tan jumping spider.
@sleepyjuniper submitted: No ID needed, I already know she's a Tan Jumping Spider! I just wanted to share some pictures of my new friend who's been living in my window! Also, if you know spiders well, could you verify if she's a female?
She's sooooo cute! Her pedipalps look like a lil mustache. And yes, she looks female. Males have an orangey stripe through the eyes.
spider friends from today :) first one is most likely a tan jumping spider (Platycryptus undatus) and second is also a jumping spider of a different species! fast little rascals..

first photo: a zoomed out picture of a tan jumping spider, which is a small, brown and grey spider facing upwards, in the center. the spider is sitting on a light brown tree trunk, with pine straw in front of the tree.
second photo: the same spider but close up and facing downwards, on a light brown piece of bark.
third photo: a zoomed out picture of a twin-flagged jumping spider, a small, black and white spider facing upwards in the center. the spider is on a medium reddish brown tree trunk, and the left fourth of the photo shows the ground and street behind the tree.
fourth photo: a zoomed out photo of the same spider facing upwards on the same tree, but it is further up and to the right. this photo shows the back of the spider more clearly.
Milkweed got a bit of an upgrade tonight- these are her senior accommodations 🥺 It's been almost a year since I found her, and she was fully-grown then. Her grip isn't too great anymore, and she can't scale the sides of the acrylic enclosures. I lined the walls of this smaller cube with screen so she can do her exploring.
It is a bit darker in there with the walls covered, but I just got a super bright light bulb in my office, so I'll keep her in there during the day with me. Plus I want to keep an eye on her to make sure she can't get behind the screen and get stuck. The edges are hot-glued down, so .. should be fine!
Anyway, she seems fine now, snacking on some fruit flies.
