The 1st of July sees the start of Tartan Day celebrations in  New Zealand and Australia.

Although National Tartan Day is celebrated in many countries on April 6th to commemorate the Declaration of Arbroath, in Australia & New Zealand they actually celebrate on July 1st. This date marks the anniversary of the Repeal Proclamation of 1782, annulling the Act of Proscription of 1747, which had made wearing tartan a punishable offence.

6 avril : Tartan Day, le grand rassemblement culturel écossais des Amériques

Aujourd’hui, à New York, se déroule la 26e parade annuelle du Tartan Day. À partir de 14 heures, quelque 3000 joueurs de cornemuse, ainsi que des membres de clan écossais drapés de leur tartan et accompagnés de chiens de race écossaise, remontent la Sixième avenue, entre la 44e et la 55e rue, en plein cœur de Manhattan, devant des dizaines de milliers de spectateurs enthousiastes car la culture écossaise est toujours très valorisée aux États-Unis où vivent environ 25 millions de descendants des migrants écossais du XIXe siècles. L’ascendance écossaise, comme l’irlandaise, est de celles que l’on n’oublie pas de mettre en avant, même si elle ne repose que sur un unique et lointain ancêtre. Ce grand rassemblement culturel écossais est relativement récent : il a été institué par le Sénat américain en 1998.

La date du Tartan Day, célébrée aux États-Unis, au Canada, en Argentine… repose sur l’anniversaire de la déclaration d’Arbroath, le 6 avril 1320, en fait une lettre envoyée au Pape pour affirmer l’indépendance de l’Écosse, à une époque où le pays était menacé par les Anglais. Il est un fait qu’un royaume d’Écosse existera de manière distincte jusqu’au XVIIe siècle. Toutefois, le folklore lié aux kilts et au tartan (étoffe tissée de motifs dit « écossais ») est une invention du début du XIXe siècle (vers 1820) et ne remonte en aucun cas au Moyen Âge. L’idée que chaque clan écossais était doté d’un tartan spécifique, afin d’afficher ses couleurs, est construction de toutes pièces de nationalistes écossais soucieux de créer un folklore qui les distinguerait des Anglais. Une légende comme quoi le kilt aurait été porté au Moyen Âge avant de disparaître à la renaissance et de ressurgir au XIXe siècle a été créée à l’époque du Printemps des peuple, quand chaque nation d’Europe s’est inventée un passé la distinguant de ses voisins. Après son invention, cet « héritage celtique » a essaimé en Irlande, où il n’y a jamais de telles traditions dans le passé, et même jusqu’en Bretagne où la certitude est à la mode. Au début du XXIe siècle, des tartans bretons ont même été créés pour chacun des différents pays de la Bretagne…

En attendant, le Tartan Day du 6 avril est avant tout une manifestation nord-américaine née dans les années 1980 (en Australie et en Nouvelle Zélande, on a opté pour le 1er juillet). Au Canada, une Journée nationale du tartan du 6 avril a été déclarée en 2010. En Argentine, où la communauté est forte de 100 000 membres, la Scottish Argentine Society, organise un défilé à Buenos Aires, chaque 6 avril.

En France quelques événements ponctuels ont eu lieu dans les années 2000, mais sans aucune récurrence. Pour profiter des retombées touristique du mouvement américain, l’Écosse a aussi lancé une série d’événements locaux, qui faute de tradition établie, se sont essoufflés les uns après les autres. Rien à voir avec New York, et d’autres villes américaines comme Washington, où la fête dure toute une semaine (la New York City Tartan Week par exemple), culminant avec la parade du samedi, qui toutefois est très loin d’attirer les foules de la Saint-Patrick, la fête de la communauté irlandaise.

Tartan Day

Why is today Tartan Day? Because April 6th is the anniversary of the Declaration of Arbroath, a letter written to the Pope in 1320, declaring Scottish independence. While it might be easy to assume Tartan Day started in Scotland, the home of the fabric, it actually started in Canada in the 1980s. It's a big thing in New York City where there is an annual Tartan Day parade.

God, the tartan wasn't fucking banned because it had some specific symbolic power, or meaning, or impact. It was fucking banned because it was the traditional dress of the Gaels, who the state viewed as a threat to their power and wanted to assimilate ("gus am bithinn coltach ris a' Ghall/aig taobh thall de dh'Uisge Chluaidh" mar a thuirt am bàrd gu mothachail glic); which is exactly what you, oh Scottish Nationalist so beloathed, are doing by pretending that this history is about a monolithic English attack on a monolithic Scottishness, therefore utterly assimilating and ignoring the Gaels, who completely vanish in this narrative. Whether seemingly positive or negative in its relation to the Gaels and their culture, the end result is the same - the utter disappearance of the Gaels; the final triumph of the colonist.
