What a sad day for Arthur, at a funeral for a lonely widow. No family or mourners but just a strange and silent woman, cold and unwell looking. Dressed head to toe in black. The woman in black. The Woman in Black was released in 1989, this television movie was a much more faithful adaptation of Susan Hills novel. Directed by Herbert Wise and distributed by ITV. Starring Adrian Rawlins as Arthur Kidd, he is brilliant in his role. Ironic as he would go on to star as James Potter in the harry potter movies and further irony daniel Radcliffe would play arthur years later. Pauline Moran stars as the creepy and deadly woman in black. This definitely feels like a ghost story, one told on a cold winters night. The atmosphere is great and spooky. It slowly builds up throughout the movie. At no point does it feel like it's too slow. The scenes where Pauline is in is terrific. She dominates each scene with her cold and lifeless eyes. All leading to a shocking ending. Maybe not the best adaptation of Sherlock, but the cast looks like they had such a great time hamming it up it's hard not to enjoy Sherlock Holmes in New York.
