i never really enjoyed the episodes on the island during s.2 (it’s been two years or so since i watched the series fully, idk the names <\3), what are your thoughts? what do you think the island added to the series besides run time and jokes? the only part i really liked about the island eps was when they had the totem that made them see what they really, REALLY wanted in that moment and how they kinda reflected that throughout s.3 (i can only think of rapz and lance rn. rapz wanting her parents = losing them by their memories being taken away during s.3, and lance receiving wealth and stability by being a part of rapunzel’s crew)

The island gave us Rapunzel and Eugene's island outfits, and I won't hear a word against them. XD

Honestly, I felt like "King Pascal" was just "Pascal's Story Redux". We didn't need another episode where he felt all left out. (Though Lance had some absolutely amazing moments in that ep, and again, we got to see Rapunzel and Eugene's island outfits for the first time.)

I did like "There's Something About Hook Foot" more than I thought I would, though. As much as people disliked his presence on the journey, I didn't mind it, and I adored that Seraphina is a plus-size mermaid and is described as stunningly beautiful. That episode also allowed us to see Rapunzel and Eugene at odds with one another which is good! It's not that a couple fighting is "healthy," as some sources might have you believe, but allowing them to have their own personalities and not always agree with one another is not a bad thing. Not to mention, they did healthily go about their conflict resolution, and it was interesting to analyze each of their sides of the argument.

Eugene thinks love is hard work. The only other long-term relationship he's been in (that we know of) was with Stalyan, and if that wasn't hard work, I don't know what was! Not to mention, his own experience courting Rapunzel has been difficult. Frederic resisted the idea of Eugene being with Rapunzel for at least six months, calling him her friend to her face. Eugene thinks love is hard work because he feels like he needs to always appear perfect to be seen worthy of Rapunzel. Rapunzel, on the other hand, thinks being yourself is what it takes. Her only experience with romantic love is with Eugene, and he fell in love with her because she's her. To her, loving Eugene is easy, and it seems to be easy for him to love her. If love is hard work, is she not working hard enough? Is he not being his authentic self and hiding who he really is from her? Does he think she's not being her authentic self? There's a lot to unpack under the surface.

This episode also canonized mermaids in the universe, as well as Vodniks, which I think is just swell. Plus, it gave us level two of the Smolder: the Simmer. Can't go wrong. XD

I agree with you about "Happiness Is..." being the best one of the group (even if it is a sort of anti-drug allegory). It was very funny, quite touching, Eugene looks amazing with green eyes, and we got level three of the Smolder: the Blaze. I didn't know I needed two more levels of the Smolder in my life, but here we are! XD

I don't mind the Lorbs existing, but their execution wasn't my favorite. But they are further reminders that Tangled does not take place in our world, if little tropical leaf people with German accents exist.

So, fun fact about the series, they wanted S2 to be in a different location in every episode, but that cost too much in location production. So instead, they were in a new location in almost every episode, with pit stops in Vardaros, Terapi Island and The House of Yesterday's Tomorrow.

Given your clothing analysis, would you say that green is more Cassandra’s color than Rapunzel’s?

Yes, absolutely! I don't know if you saw the final update I added to my post, but imo green for Cassandra represents innocence and new beginnings - it's the colour she's seen wearing in flashbacks to when she was a child, suggesting that when she wears it in the final scenes of Plus Est En Vous, it's a happy return to square one. She's reconciled with Rapunzel, forgiven herself, and reunited with her father - and it's the same colour she was wearing when Gothel abandoned her without a second thought, but the Captain chose to protect her and love her, and I can't imagine it would be lost on Cassandra that even after all she's done to push him away, he still loves her without question and wants her in his life.

(Green for Rapunzel, on the other hand, I think more likely represents doubt and uncertainty, since we only see her wear it on Terapi Island, where she argues with first Pascal (about his lie to the Lorbs), then Eugene (about how Hookfoot should conduct himself on his date with Serafina), then everyone (about the Idol). It's somewhat of a low point for her in Season 2 - and we see green on Rapunzel again when she uses the Hurt Incantation on the Great Tree, which, while not a moment of direct uncertainty, does mark the beginning of her friendship with Cassandra slowly truly unravelling.)

Day 6- Day of Hearts

For today’s prompt, I decided to try to think up what gifts Rapunzel and Eugene got each other for each Day of Hearts in the show

For the first Day of Hearts in season 1, Eugene got Rapunzel the bird necklace that she wears with her island outfit. And Rapunzel thoroughly studied the Flynn Rider series and made completely book accurate figurines for him

For their second Day of Hearts in season 2, they ended up spending it on Terapi Island. Since they were stranded they didn’t have much to work with so Rapunzel made sand sculptures of herself and Eugene. Meanwhile Eugene enlisted Cass and Lance’s help to make a boat out of a tree and took Rapunzel on a romantic boat ride

And finally, for their third Day of Hearts, because of the whole situation it was pretty complicated. Rapunzel made sure to make pancakes for Eugene just in case they never got to sign the book together.

But luckily as we know they were still able to sign the book. So technically she got him two gifts that year. Eugene meanwhile, had spent all his freetime since returning to Corona on a scrapbook of his and Rapunzel’s first year together. He initially planned it to be a gift for the previous year’s Day of Hearts, but of course, they were on the road.

9 - Most disliked character(s)? Why?

fuck i know this is such an obvious answer but zhan tiri, mostly because in my head shes sort of the representation of a lot of the wasted potential of the series :( the entire show was building up to a Big Boss Fight with zhan tiri but then it was just cass and rapunzel while everyone else was dying on the ground :/ and then it ended with her just. connecting her wrists and everything was solved. that is so boring! give me a cool fun big fight! why are so many of the main characters not there for the final battle against the big bad! at LEAST let lance eugene and varian be there??? theyre main characters too??????? anyways i am angry and bitter. zhan tiri ended up being such a boring villain (her final form wasnt even cool?? all the stories and flashbacks looked so sick but then she was so. Nothing.) and it was clear that there was so much backstory with zhan tiri and demanitus that we didnt get to see! like they had one flashback that we saw that was missing context and didnt even explain what happened or what was going on :( AND AND AND zhan tiri's history with gothel was just brushed over :/ :/ she even has a line to cass that was like "run! just like your mother!" or something like that and its like WHAT! ARE! YOU! TALKING! ABOUT!!! what did gothel do! why should we care!! bitch!!!!!

anyways. long story short. i dont like zhan tiri because she should have been better.

10 - Most disliked arc? Why?

hhh i know i just talked about this earlier today but. cass's villain arc drives me up a fucking wall. it should have been so good it should have been about her relationship with rapunzel and how she was always outshined. i wouldnt even mind the gothel twist that much if they had used it as a jumping off point instead of her entire motivation! if it was just the final straw for cass feeling abandoned, then i would be fine with it but instead it was literally the only thing used in the important episodes :( there were even little moments throughout season three where we were teased with the possibility of another motivation, but then once we get to cassandra's revenge its just "grrrrr rapunzel you killed my mom that hated me!" and its just weird and i Do Not Like It. i said a little more about it here too if anyone is interested in me being a bitter hag

11 - Is there an unpopular character you like that the fandom doesn’t? Why?

stalyan :) i do love to angst and make headcanons about her being abusive but its not canon (theres a little bit of canon that you can use to support it but sometimes i choose to ignore that bc cool girl is cool)

idk! i just like the idea of her kinda just being influenced by her father to act on her worst instincts then once she gets some distance from him shes like "okayyyy so that was fucked up, oops" and moving on with her life outside of the baron's empire! i just think shes neat :) she has done many things wrong but i am willing to forgive her

12 - Is there an unpopular arc that you like that the fandom doesn’t? Why?

listen. i LOVE the terapi island arc. i get that people dont like it because it halted the plot for a few episodes and threw them off course but i just think that its soooo much fun :') first of all rapunzels dress is so cute (green dress supremacy), and i think that there were just some nice moments from the characters in all the episodes and it was nice to just let them hang out on a weird island for a bit! i really liked serafina (seraphina? idk) i think shes a cutie and her episode was fun (shoulda been a lance episode though, every day i wish that hookfoot wasnt in season 2). i get everyones problems with it and i agree, however i am willing to look past all the issues because i had fun

(( ok but cassandra's armor/costume design as an indication of her openness and the state of her heart throughout the series

in the beginning, with rapunzel, she's mostly just wearing leather and cloth. it covers pretty much all of her skin besides her face, and it's loose enough to conceal her shape a bit, but she's not incredibly hardened and sealed off from everyone. (and on terapi island she strips the outfit down further and actually shows skin, coinciding with the time she actually feels most comfortable with their group, though that part is likely coincidence.)

after the great tree, she's hurt. and more importantly, she's hurt because she got too close, cared too much. so she takes the armor she finds lying there, armor made for someone else, and armors up both her body and heart, making sure that'll never happen again.

her moonstone armor is unbreakable— and so, too, is its grip on her mind. like any physical blow, every attempt to get her to open up and come back just bounces off of her uselessly. she's entirely impenetrable— nothing gets in, nothing gets out.

and during the eclipse, that armor shatters, and cassandra is left almost naked as she hits her lowest point, raw and vulnerable. the sort of bodysuit thing (see previous headcanons for what I think it was meant to be) is entirely form fitting, hiding and protecting nothing, just like her soul is on display.

in the end, she goes back to cloth and leather armor; while she knows there's still things out there she needs to protect herself from, she's done trapping herself in a little metal box, carrying that weight everywhere she goes. she can't spend the rest of her life in fear. ))

Begge kunstnere forfiner housen i hver deres retning i den mest spiselige balance mellem million-projektsbeton og undergrunds-checket blåsvensk klubberi, når det er allerbedst. De er begge i kreativ topform.

Ikke desto mindre er jeg blevet bjergtaget af hver og ét af disse out-of-this-world skyhøje ambitiøse singler. Billions står som årets ubestridt bedste sang fra året der gik, hvor Caroline Polachek springer hovedkuls udi poppens allerfineste balanceparametre - benytte en specifik situation mellem et dig og et mig og herefter invitere lytteren ind i verden hvor vedkommende selv kan fylde sanguniverset ud med drømme, mareridt og fantasi. Sunset er, ganske uventet, flamenco-pop og Welcome to Island slibrig dansepop som var det hukket ud af en collegeserie fra slut-90erne.

Mest musikalskoverlegne udgivelse - post-rocken er stadig sitrende vital og Black Country er hungrende efter at give lytteren noget at tænke over i tekster mellem brændende rumskibe og ravruskende kærlighed.

Rosalia

Rosalia markerer med Motomami ikke kun hendes entré på hitlisternes allerhøjeste tinder, men løfter hende også blandt nutidens musikinnovatører af allerhøjeste rang. Et album, der ikke vil sættes i bås. Hun flytter sig fra ophavet i den spanske flamenco-tradition over mod caribisk reaggeton (tak for vitalisere denne trivialiserede poprytmik) til 90er grunge, sydstats-rap og sågar free-jazz. Hvem sagde smalstrøm ikke kan disrupte main-strøm?

Som med Guld Palme-vinderen Titane, skaber Rosalia en persona i skikkelse af et feministisk motorvæsen, der bliver frigjort gennem transformeringen fra menneske til maskine - som hun også selv siger det på SAOKO "Yo me transformo" - hun transformerer sig - ikke kun musikalsk, men også kreativt. Popdronningen er født påny. Pas på Beyoncé, der er en popkunstner, der ikke er bange for at lege med.

Sometimes, Forever

Soccer Mommy

Fodboldmoderen Sophie Allison med det alletiders melodiøse overskud træder, som hun har for vane, endnu engang opad ambitionernes rangstige med sine skrøbelige, hjertelige og fremfor alt smukke poprockede sange. Men vent. På Sometimes, Forever er det som om det gruer fra undergrunden. Innovatoren Daniel Lopatin har nemlig haft en finger med i spillet, og det kan i den grad høres på numre som den eksperimentelle "Unholy Affliction" eller 90'er ørehængeren Darkness Forever - som var den taget ud af britpoppen.

På et tætpakket Loppen i september 2022 fik hun også i den grad dementeret, at Sometimes, Forever ubesværet kan hypnotisere et publikum til at glemme alt om tid og sted. Allison har i den grad fremtiden i sin hule hånd.

Cherry

Daphni

Yndlings Dan, eller Daphni, Caribou, hvad han nu ikke alt kalder sig, gjorde mig rundtosset, euforisk og en smule halvforelsket i hans til dato mest poppede danseunivers. Og gud hvor er det appetitligt. Numre som "Mania", "Take Two", "Arrow", "Mona" og "Fly Away" føles som en lang dopaminrus, mens "Arp Blocks", "Clavicle" og "Cherry" føles som forårsbebudende knopskydninger på dette spraglede, vildtvoksende kirsebærtræ.

I guess nothing will be the same

Liss

Verden mistede en sangstemme i alt for ung en alder. Søren Holm var et personligt forbillede for mig, og derfor betød hver eneste udgivelse fra Liss's hånd noget helt særligt for mig. I Guess blev udgivet efter Søren ikke længere var iblandt os længere. Men gudskelov og tak for bandets øvrige medlemmer Villads, Vilhelm og Tobias, kunne Liss' debutalbum alligevel se dagens lys i forsommeren 2022. Som fan af Århus-bandet siden deres spæde begyndelse i 2015, har det været som en rutsjetur af følelser at følge dem gennem årerne. Man kan mærke, at Søren efter nogle turbulente år, genfandt glæden og lysten til at skrive musik, og særligt "We Made It", "Exist", "Turn Your Back On Me" og "Text Me Back" virker som tætpakkede refleksioner over et liv som de færreste når at leve gennem et helt livsløb.

Once Twice Melody

Victoria Legrand og Alex Scally har efterhånden fulgt hinanden i mange år, på mange plader og mange turneer. Er det overhovedet muligt for duoen, der nu har 8 album på CV'et, stadig at holde sig selv aktuelle? Det korte svar er et rungende ja! På den 18-numre lange Once Twice Melody beviser de, med hjælp fra livetrommeslageren James Barone, at man med storladenhed, mørke og cinematisk rumlighed kan gro yderligere som band og frembringe endnu en artistisk manifestation.

Nymph er en sensuel udforskning med en uomtvistelig vision. Med kæberaslende produktioner fra typer som Arca, Sega Bodega og Mura Masa smelter soniske væsner sammen til et fantastisk mytho-kosmos oooog * whoops * pludselig har man Shygirls unikum af en verden.

Dette var ikke bare et hvilket som helst sideprojekt fra Radiohead bandmedlemmerne Thom Yorke og Jonny Greenwood. Langt fra - ideen, der opstod i kølvandet på COVID-kedsomlighed etc. fik de to kreative radiohoveder sammen med trommeslageren Tom Skinner rystet rockposen - for ud kom jazz, elektro, kraut. Forvent gåsehud og mere til.

CRASH

Charli XCX

CRASH er power pop deluxe. Fra en kunstner, der måske, måske ikke har sluttet sin karriere - i hvert fald med hendes nuværende pladeselskab - føles bestemt ikke som nogen svanesang. Tværtimod udforsker hun atter nye landskaber fyldt med lutter pop, hvor hendes glæde for legender som Janet Jackson får lov at side om side med alt det bedste fra poppens 80ere, 90ere og 00ere. Hun er i sandhed forud for sin tid.

Dawn FM

The Weeknd

Abel Tesfaye har kunne fortælle historier som få andre blandt popartister af hans popularitet. Og han er samtidig en konceptelsker. En Michael Jackson elsker. Og en af verdens mest streamede kunstnere. Med disse variable in mente, formår han på Dawn FM at balancere fuldstændig ubesværet mellem parodisk radioføring, coronaens råb om nærhed, tidløshed, paranoia, men også med en vis portion humor og forfriskende uselvhøjtidelighed, der summeret op i retromaniens favør, udfolder sig som en helende terapisession i dans og eufori, hvor de færreste producere kan følge med. Måske lige på nær hovedpersonen selv.

Om Vi Får Leva Jonathan Johansson

Efter 15 års kunstneriske op og nedture udgav svenske Jonathan Johansson i skyggen af krigens Europa sit ottende album. Timingen kunne ikke være bedre, for i en dunkel tid, påminder han os om, at vi ikke ved, hvad der venter os - at hvert åndedræt ikke behøver at være det sidste. Hvor Lebensraum! næsten føltes som en idiosynkratisk fremtidsprofeti om Europas nuværende uvisheder sammenvævet med en lethed og tro på fremtiden, var Scirocco var dog alligevel en smule mere dystopisk, men samtidig et lovende tegn på, hvad man har i vente, hvis bare man har tålmodighed med Johanssons kreative pophjerne.

Om Vi Får Leva føles nemlig som en genkomst til varmen og en rejse ind i et mere åbent og håbefuldt univers han ikke har befundet sig i længe. Og det han lykkedes så godt med er, at han bruger han evner at benytte sig af sit bedste våben - evnen til at formulere sig hemmelighedsfuldt, politisk, næsten essayistisk - og samtidig poetisk - at det kommer fra hans inderste tanker. Tag nummeret "Dåligt År", der med følgende linjer viser den rådløse position nogle europæere nok står i "Men vad ska vi göra/När vi har räknat alla döda/Slåss för fred i Nagiala". Eller på "Våroffer", hvor han blotter sin egen usikkerhed "Ge mig en fjäderpenna/Och en pulpet/Så jag kan misslyckas igen" - at en kunstner som ham kan mislykkes med sine ellers vigtigste stykker værktøj - fjerpennen og talerstolen. Men hvis man lytter efter, breder optimismen sig "solen skiner igenom alla moln/Alla färger som finns" som han håbefuldt synger på den mesterlige "Varje Regnbåge (Den sista)".

Hvis vi må leve, så synes jeg, man skal leve med Om Vi Får Leva.

New Dream Appreciation Week Day 2: Vacation 🏖

One of my favorite scenes from Happiness Is..., when New Dream danced! It was so cute!! 😍

I also wanted to share a headcanon I have that when New Dream are on their honeymoon, they'll travel to so many of the places they went to in S2 and more, including the Island! (Let's just hope they don't get hit by any of its crazy magic though 🤣🙃).

Out of all the callbacks and parallels in the series I’m still surprised we didn’t get a lantern reference (unless you count the last episode) with Eugene and Rapunzel. Or maybe the group going out as one.

I mean, there were lanterns at the end of "Secret of the Sundrop"

and also during "Stronger Than Ever Before."

There's also lanterns hanging from the ceiling in her bedroom

and on Terapi Island. Rapunzel uses one of them to send a message home during their S2 trip.

Or do you mean specifically Rapunzel and Eugene lifting a lantern together, or Rapunzel and her parents? Because Rapunzel and Eugene lifting the lanterns together was very movie-specific to me. It was indicative of them finding their love in each other. The epilogue of the series even plays a snippet of "I See the Light" during the proposal, so... yeah.

Merida/Rapunzel Ship Meme

How differently do they think of each other now compared to when they first met?

When Rapunzel first met Merida, she idealized her to an extreme and was intimidated. Over the course of getting to know her she grows more confident in her ability to argue with Merida and make decisions for herself, realizing Merida is not as worldly as she claims and despite her constant boundary pushing Merida’s been relatively sheltered.

Merida learns to respect and trust Rapunzel’s abilities. Initially contending with some internalized misogyny she confuses Rapunzel’s hesitancy and anxiety for a girlish, silly inability to act, instead of realizing it for what it is, a reaction to extreme trauma. As Rapunzel grows and they learn about each other she’s forced to reckon with Rapunzel’s competency and rely on her as Rapunzel had relied on the Scot.

What do their friends/family think of their relationship?

Elinor loves Rapunzel as soon as she meets her. She had struggled with Merida coming out and was hesitant when she’d only read about Rapunzel but Rapunzel helps to mend the rift between them. Fergus was always supportive.

Arianna and Frederic are both ecstatic to have Rapunzel home safe. Pascal doesn’t really like Merida because he’d caught onto the whole lost princess thing at the same time Merida did and was angry with her for not communicating it.

How do their personalities/skills complement or contrast with each other?

I’ve spoken before about how I really like Merida with femme-ier women but there’s more to this pairing than that. Both Merida and Rapunzel are very active characters that make decisions for themselves that impact everyone else around them, although Rapunzel is less sure of herself and is slower to act. I imagine that Merida could bait out Rapunzel’s decisiveness and Rapunzel could force Merida to consider other people before acting.

What is their favorite aspect of each other?

Rapunzel’s favorite aspect of Merida is her bravery and self confidence. Merida’s swagger is almost unthinkable when her only real point of reference is Gothel who is constantly looking at mirrors and adjusting her brow. Merida believes she can handle whatever comes at her and when Rapunzel’s at her side she believes she can too.

Merida’s favorite thing about Rapunzel is much the same, Rapunzel can confront anything, has been through a lot and is so much stronger than anyone could have thought. Whenever Rapunzel disagrees with someone it makes her happy.

Do either of them have pet peeves about each other?

Rapunzel didn’t hate it at first but pretty quickly develops to hate when Merida makes decisions that effect her without her, or decides things for her. Merida is very impatient can hardly bear how hesitant Rapunzel can be.

How would each reconcile with each other after a fight?

Merida and Rapunzel have explosive and sometimes intense arguments but both are very clear that they still care about each other and neither one is willing to sleep alone or go to bed angry.

What would be their ideal vacation getaway together?

Terapi Island from Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure. It was miserable when they first got stranded there by accident but leaving the island together brought them closer and both of them still like to visit the Lorbs, albeit Rapunzel significantly more than Merida.

Think of a new way (AU, different situation, etc.) they could have met for the first time.

Most Meripunzel fics/art I’ve seen will somehow be a story of Merida rescuing Rapunzel from Gothel or an entirely different universe or some combination therein. I’m sure I’m not the first person to suggest it but I think an AU where Rapunzel has left the tower on her own and has been making her own way, taking advantage of people in the way Gothel claimed people would try to take advantage of her and thieving from Merida would be an excellent change of pace.
