Just sent off the Teacher Guide for Rowdy, book 3. Dad did a fantastic job! If you are unaware, he wrote teacher guides for all the Rowdy books to date. 3 so far! He has successfully created fabulous learning opportunities and activities with Rowdy that span from 6th-12th grade AND has included the National standards as well as TEKS! 🤠 If you don’t know my dad, here is a brief bio… Jack Mullen is a retired Texas teacher of 18 years. He earned a BA in Theater Arts and English from Bowling Green State University in Ohio, an MS Degree in Foreign Affairs from George Washington University in Washington, D.C., is a graduate of the National War College, and served as an Author/Instructor at The U.S. Army Command and Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. After 22 years on active duty as an Army officer, he retired with the rank of Colonel and completed 40 additional semester hours at The University of Texas at San Antonio to achieve a Texas State Lifetime Teaching Certificate in Secondary English and Social Studies. Today, I'm going to relax and enjoy some delicious ribs and tasty beverages! 🔥 Tomorrow, I will welcome 27 kiddos to 5th grade- grateful to be in a district that provides options to families and teachers and the support to make that happen!! 😍 Haven't been this nervous since- well NEVER in all the years I've been teaching! So far 2020 has definitely been one that has given me crazy anxiety and many sleepless nights! 😳 I look forward to when the Covid/pandemic is behind us! An under the counter holder with tissues flipped upside down! This keeps germ filled hands from touching the tissue box and also keeps the tissues from disappearing because the box always gets moved. Genius, right? Check out my highlight story “Tissue Hack” to see how I fixed it just right. . TIP: shake and smack the tissue box around a bit before putting them in the holder. Real Talk from a Real Teacher.

While a new concept for public education, distance learning isn’t really new… There are multiple online charter schools and online homeschool curriculums. Plenty of resources and options for districts and teachers to use. Additionally we won’t be in crisis mode while trying to plan distance learning in a week. It’s no longer a last minute plan. It's not a new crisis. It’s something we know is coming and have adequate time to research and plan (which are basises of a grounded educator).

There are federal regulations in place for COVID related sick days. These are in addition to State/Local days. We’re protected.

Yeah, state testing is a pain. It’s been a thorn in my side since I was a third grade student. However, it’s an efficient way to collect data across large populations (if you want further opinions on state testing, message me). In this case we probably need them to see how to adapt further years and fill in gaps from the 19-20 AND 20-21 school years.

Masks and 6 feet… Will be some things we adapt. We don’t have a choice. I don't have much to say about this right now due to the constant changing of circumstances. Roll with the punches and consider the student, staff, or faculty member who lives with their at-risk relative, or is themself at-risk. We’re a team in it for the kids and if someone in the team suffers, we all hurt.

Please remember the people who make these rules/regulations/mandates are under much public scrutiny. They know they won’t please everyone. It’s hard to figure out what’s best for students when some districts have 300 total PK-12 (less, in some cases) and some have 1000+ per grade (and that’s only students; more students means more faculty/staff as well). Voice your opinions, you’re entitled to them, but please be courteous when doing so.

Since learning targets and success criteria are high on hatties list of effectiveness, we have been showcasing different ways of interacting with them in the classroom. One idea, shared from @thepurposedriventeacher , was to have them on the desk for students to see the entire class. So we thought, why not put them in a sheet protector and check them off with dry erase markers as we go! In one lesson we had students check them off at the end as a way to assess students self assessment of understanding. In the second lesson we checked them off as a group each time we completed a criteria.
