fuuuuck man, i can't stop thinking about amy's character development.

like amy's always been smart, albeit ditzy, but she operates largely on rebelling against what her parents want from her. she does not want to be a living uterus to make heirs and money for her shitty folks. she parties and sleeps around and generally still acts like a sorority girl because she values freedom.

and it's funny bc her parents introduce her to kif, but kif is a new way to keep amy grounded. kif isn't a one night stand, he tries to call her back and wants to get to know her. he wants to impress her family, and neither of them care that it doesn't work because he was brave enough to try. in fact, they can probably both bond over feeling like they're unfairly tethered to people who don't see them as individuals. he loves her and wants to commit to her, and she's flattered and realizes she loves him right back beyond just dating.

and amy is... not good with emotional literacy. she says things to insult people on accident a lot, and she doesn't usually seem willing to get very personal with the crew. and when kif dies in BWABB, her mom literally tells her to get over it mere days later, and then she copes by sleeping with zapp seemingly just to bring kif back in some way. so i think this is something else she internalized from her upbringing.

so i think when kif gets pregnant, obviously she's not ready to adjust to a life of responsibility, especially given how being a mother has been held over her head as basically a command for most of her life. but she wants to be with kif, and she's willing to adapt for him. and then she gets 20 years to prepare, and given this episode, i believe she spent those 20 years talking this over with kif, working out their relationship, learning to get her mind in order and eventually be a responsible parent. they had some real hurdles (and bad writing) but i think eventually, she felt ready to commit, especially after she earned her phd. she's financially secure enough to do pretty much whatever she wants after all, and having a family with kif is what she wants next in life.

i think this all made the "biological mother" thing so much harder for her. because leela has her own traumas, but it seems like she's naturally maternal, whereas i feel like amy had to really work for it. and she's worried that simply being exhausted is enough to make her a bad mom, and takes that out on leela, even though leela is also exhausted and far from perfect. i feel like in amy's eyes, leela has always been very capable and mature, even if they don't always get along, and i can see her worrying that the kids would innately bond with leela and amy wouldn't be enough. and given she outright acknowledges how terrible her parents are in this episode, and they reject the babies for being visibly mutant-alien, i can see her worrying she's repeating the cycle, and even though she's loving them as much as she can, she's only ever known parents who were harsh and critical, and being so openly loving is something she had to learn. (leela had to learn this too, but amy is too self-critical to realize that.)

so when amy says she loves those kids "more than [she] realized [she] could ever love anything"... i really believe that. i don't think amy knew how capable she was of expressing true love. i don't think she realized that she could commit to someone and not just fulfill her parents' degrading wishes for her. this isn't about her parents, this is about her and kif and the future they made with their love.

and by god, she's gonna be a good mother, and it'll be hard, but in the end, she's doing it because it feels good.

This episode was both incredibly beautiful and incredibly, INCREDIBLY anxiety-inducing – I was waiting for the other shoe to drop right up to the moment the credits rolled. The realities of Khun Yai just not clocking servants as people were never quite as obvious as when he repeatedly insisted on variations of "nobody's here" "nobody's going to see" on a property FULL of people, and it did not help my apprehension.

I loved the way the intimate scenes were filmed! Moey and Ueangphueng and what I'm pretty sure was Ueangphueng switching into Northern Thai (which most of the servants speak and I don't think we've heard any of the family speak yet) was so sweet and I was so worried. And Jom and Yai … whoa. The way expectations/interpretation of Khun Yai's request that Jom rub oil on his back differed so much between them — Jom with his 21st century background clearly expecting it to go somewhere, Yai either just not thinking that far or chickening out. The way they intercut Jom's memory with the masturbation scene … man, this episode is gorgeous. Same with the dance scene at the end of the episode. The framing, the way it's shot … incredibly pretty. And then! the kiss and the eye contact and the silent agreement? that tiny, decisive nod?? WHOA. I've seen half-naked make-out scenes that weren't as charged as this. Incredible.

I'm ever more worried for next week because it looks like Ueangphueng and Moey are going to get in bad bad trouble :(

Ok but in all seriousness I don't know how I feel about this episode. Like...it's brilliantly painful writing and horror isn't supposed to make you happy. Some of the later episodes of TMA reduced me to tears and I'm not mad about that.

But I kind of hate it. I hate seeing hope weaponized, I hate that Seb's father was right. I know it do be like that...but it shouldn't be. And I also know art isn't necessarily prescriptive. Every story imparts information but not every story gives good advice. Some storytellers give bad advice on purpose expecting the audience to push back. Some storytellers demand you look at the ugly truth and make your own decisions what you want to do about it. Some storytellers want you to feel bad, not out of malice but to provoke a more active response.

And I still fuuuucking hate it so so much. Some part of me actively refuses the moral of the story. Fuck you silt verses I'm gonna keep hoping even if it literally kills me. Even if people use that hope to use me. Because even if the bad guy says it, he's not wrong, we do need hope. And even if Seb does come to a bad end, he's not wrong, we should take rest and joy where we can.

But like...yeah that can absolutely be used against you. And you can't ever fully trust that the thing that seems good for you is. And you can't know that you're not a brain in a jar.

And I manage that possibility by ignoring it. Until I have enough evidence to prove something is bad for me, is fake, is hurting me or others, it's unsustainable to simply never let myself enjoy anything. Hell, I'm not even sure if I can fully accept the ending as a bad one. I know it's supposed to be. They're trapped in an illusion forever. But like...imagining myself in their place, assuming I was leaving behind a similarly isolated and aimless life....I don't know. Yeah it wouldn't be my choice but I didn't choose to be born in Canada either and I'm not mad about that.

I guess I don't have any good advice either. Show's over go home.

Okay this episode was EVERYTHING I hoped it would be. Stupid miscommunications, the fake couple argument, deciding they don’t feel like getting divorced AND going off into the sunset. Literally checked off EVERYTHING i had in my list of hopes for this ep (all it was missing was the cheesy romance disney ass music at the end). I wouldn’t have wanted it to turn out any other way and it cracks me tf up they still dont realize theyre married to EACH OTHER. Now, will this continue into other episodes like how we saw the ending of Pardon Our Dust didn’t seem to stay canon? Idk! I doubt its ever going to be brought up again. But in my heart and mind Beavis and Butthead are now legally married, love wins or something :] somebody go update the wiki 

So happy to see this episode finally come full circle :]

OH YEAH AND WE'RE ON A GREAT STREAK OF NO PISS DRINKING.

OVERALL STILL NO MISSES, every episode has managed to make me laugh the video segments literally had me almost falling over this time. such a great day to be a beavis and butthead fan :]

B5 s03e03: A Day In The Strife previous episode • table of contents

Transport Dionysius has been waiting over an hour to dock! With how much foreshadowing is done by the names of ships in this, the B5 crew are probably battening down all the hatches and hiding all the wine and sundry other intoxicants. 

Sheridan's tactic of cooling off violently angry people by freaking them out is a great tactic. I've used it myself from time to time! When it works, it's always a rush. 

Ohhhhh, dang!! Someone's here to replace G'Kar as Ambassador! I wonder if they're collaborators, or if they're pretending to be collaborators. They could be great allies or a great torment for G'Kar.

The new opening is so dramatic. I would say cheesy, except it grips me, and I like cheese anyway. I notice that all the main B5 crew, and Delenn and Lennier all look firmly into the camera and give a little nod. Then Zack Allen and Londo stare dead into the camera. But! Interestingly! Vir and G'Kar both come into frame looking away from the camera, then turning their heads to stare directly into it. The movements are so distinct and patterned, it's got to be intentional. I wonder if Vir will work with G'Kar this season. And if Zack Allen with with Londo, or they'll have related arcs in some way.

Ambassador Na'Far draws a terrifying and brutal day to day life on Narn. The resistance is active and killing Centauri regularly, and for every Centauri killed, five hundred Narn are executed. There must be just...mass slaughter. Every day. I'm sure Na'Far does want to save as many Narn lives as possible, and I'm also sure that he was instructed to request G'Kar's extradition. This meeting was a good way of serving both goals: alert the Captain to ongoing ground conditions on Narn, and officially request G'Kar's sanctuary be terminated, on behalf of the Centauri warlords. 

Happy and charmed to see Garibaldi and Franklin continue to hang out and be friendly! Having regular, quiet dinners together, as bros do. And it's good to see the senior staff hanging out! Ivanova joining them to swap gossip intel, and then actually listening to the classified information from Sheridan's file that Garibaldi hacked is too good. 

Franklin returns from the bathroom to flirt with Garibaldi before heterosexually dancing away. 

Ambassador Na'Far reporting as ordered to Londo Mollari is so horrible. What is wrooooong with him treating and talking to Na'Far this way, fuuuuck. Vir has the sense to be obviously horrified. And he's gotten quite comfortable with confronting his boss - good for him. Horrifying subject content. 

New ship! First Contact, presumably. Interesting! A fun, sci-fi moment amidst the war drama. 

Londo complaining about Delenn and everyone disapproving of him, and also calling in the favor Delenn owes him. And hah! What a favor! He wants Vir to be appointed to Minbar as Ambassador from Centauri and described him with such ringing terms as "most inoffensive," "keeps to himself," and "wouldn't even spy on your government." lmaoooooo. Londo is right that Vir is liable to get himself yoinked home in an unpleasant fashion if he opposes the Narn genocide too loudly. 

If Londo seeing his own youth in Vir is in any way accurate, then he changed dramatically and horribly over the course of his life. A good reminder that life really is all about choices, and you can make new ones anytime. If only Londo would make some new choices! He seems blind to his own opportunities, deep in the Sunk Cost Fallacy.

"Sometimes I miss that we don't talk anymore, Delenn." "We never really talked, Londo." "No, I suppose not."

wow. So darkly sad. There is something sad (although mostly pathetic) about how Londo is so desperately lonely now that no one will hang out with him anymore. He is the architect of all his own woes.

Another totally heterosexual dinner date between Garibaldi and Franklin. This time, Garibaldi cooked and had Dr Franklin over! Slash mental health intervention? Steven has a legal prescription for stims because he has to work 36 hour shifts. And Garibaldi has feelings. And Steven has very defensive feelings, so Garibaldi's probably onto something.

This is an extraordinary level of kind, gentle, thoughtful, concern between men. I love the tenderness. What an excellent plot to put in. Love seeing people try to be good to each other and build bonds and reach out. Funny that the concern is that Dr Franklin is doing too much space coke, though.

We have now seen Na'Far twice, and now his assistant. And!! I didn't realize! But he's Narn that Sheridan met while kidnapped onto the fight-to-the-death alien ship! I also love his and Sheridan's friendship. He wants to repay Sheridan for rescuing him, by being his bodyguard.  "Here is a man who will live to be a hundred and fifty." Hah!

The alien ship is indeed a probe, and it's running an intelligence test on the B5-ers. They provide correct answers, or the probe with blow up and take B5 with it. That's a high stakes first contact! And! One of the things they're offering to induce the humans to want to try to answer the questions, is another panacea. There were two or three panacea episodes so far, I was wondering if the theme would come back.

So far they seem to be saying "Panaceas are always sought after, but in reality there is no magical elixir for all medical ills."

Oh, Na'Far really did come here argue with G'Kar! no thank you!! G'Kar has been up to a lot. He is organizing a lot of resistance. He is organizing food drops -- the Centauri are not importing enough for everyone. 

Both Na'Far and G'Kar are being relatively reasonable. Except for Na'Far seemingly genuinely thinking that if G'Kar were to return to Narn, that he wouldn't be harmed. 

Dr Franklin is doing space coke! but as he said - he has to be alert on long shifts and he has to do emergency surgery. Unhealthy? Probably. Necessary to work those long hours? Definitely. Bad situation with no good choices. 

Vir, while unhappy about Londo arranging his promotion and transfer, but perks up when Londo says "In time women may even come to find you attractive." 

Oof, Na'Far is not finding the B5 Narn to be friendly. I hope G'Kar doesn't actually end up imprisoned on Narn! I'd rather hang with him on B5. 

Dang! Sheridan! Rude! Ivanova is not to be insulted, she is to be cherished. 

Garibaldi is being very decent. And rationally clear-eyed. He does not want G'Kar to return. 

"My fate is in the hands of G'Quan. What must happen, will happen. Thank you for your concern Mr Garibaldi. Good night."

Well, now I think he has some sort of plan! I don't want to think that he would be giving up, so I must believe he has a plan. 

Dr Franklin! Another round of space coke?! He's just reamed out a respected colleague on earth, and now he's got a surgery to perform. Uhhh, personally I'd rather my surgeon nap a little first. 

Huh, odd sequence of events here. I do think that it's an odd set-up for a technologically advanced species to go around threatening species and blowing them up if they aren't advanced enough. But it did blow up  like it was charging weapons to attack B5 and the data transfer made it....self-destruct instead? Anyway. peculiar! I hope there's follow-up! 

Na'Far did not persuade the B5 Narnuan people that G'Kar should be sacrificed for the faint hope that their families might not be harmed, and they want G'Kar to stay. Including the bodyguard guy! Good on them. I'm very glad G'Kar is staying. 

Garibaldi and Dr Franklin are having their third dinner date in this episode alone. Partner says "of course there's an AA episode in a 90s tv show," which I guess seems like it could be. I'll take some genuine-seeming friendships with male support networks where I can find 'em, though.

Bye, Vir! He really is leaving! I hope he'll be back more, too. Would he be in the title sequence if he was leaving the show after the third episode??

Overall, a lot happened! I wonder how Na'Far will fit into future episodes. I hope Vir comes back! And as always, I hope that Londo will get a fucking grip on himself and start making some baby steps towards doing the right thing. Because his current rational of "If I don't do the wrong thing, someone else will, and get the credit for it, while I lose out," is terrible. And he's been mired in it for awhile.

So, have you watched the new Doctor Who episodes? What do you think of them if yes?

I LOVED IT ALL SO MUCH

Hugely relieved that the nostalgia tour is now over; I don't think my neurons could tolerate much more of it

I think my favourite is still The Star Beast because I enjoy when Doctor Who gets all hamfisted about social issues. I'm a sucker for that!!

But oh man, oh man, the Giggles!!! The music sequence! The ending!!! AHHHHH

And then the fucking. The direction on Wild Blue Yonder, fuuuuck. Like, I expected the actors to be amazing; it's Tennant and Tate. To describe them as "good actors" does not capture the skill that they have specifically in working together.

But I was blown away by how well it was directed!! The fucking scenes where you as an audience member are realizing "wait, that's not how the Doctor talks to Donna normally.... WAIT THAT'S NOT THE DOCTOR AT ALL" just. Delicious. Perfectly done. Which is extra wild to me when looking at the dirctero's other credits which are ummm. Not that good, shall we say.

And THEN you find out that the torso-and-head framing of each camera shot was So On Purpose and it just!!!

It was all so good.

Oh man, I know I'm the specific target demographic being pandered to (queer millennials who loved Eccleston, obsessed over Tennant, enjoyed Smith, wandered off during Capaldi, and bounced off Whittaker).

I was always going to love it. It's designed to make me love it!

it's designed to bait with nostalgia. I know that. I recognize it.

But the thing is? Oh my god, the thing is, instead of a nasty little trap, the bait was just to get you SO HYPE for Gatwa.

And it worked. I'm so much more excited for his run than I was beforehand. Like. WAY more hype.

I was excited enough for him that I knew I would watch his Christmas special and probably the first 1-3 episodes of his run.

Now? Just from the little sample we got of the way Gatwa will be carrying this role, in the context of the more child-friendly* approach that earmarks Davies as a Doctor Who showrunner?

I'm SO fucking COMMITTED. I wanna see where they take him. I have always preferred the... the times when DW is like... Cringe? But earnestly cringe? Hamfisted social messages. Monsters that sound absurd until you see then. Monsters that stay absurd even as you're hooked. AMVs as threats.

All that shit is MADE to please me specifically.

AND BUDDY!!!!!!!!!! I AM PLEASED!!!!!!!!!!

I cannot WAIT to see the Situations they're going to put Gatwa's doctor in and watch him get out of them. He has the perfect level of charismatic charm and genuine emotion.

Normally I need to see the Doctor and his Companion interact before I can get a sense of the pathos the actor will bring to the role and how they work off the writing and direction.

But shiiiiiiit, Gatwa came out swinging and I already have SUCH high hopes.

And this hasn't even gotten to how fuckin' diverse the backgrounders were in these specials. They really said, "okay, we have filled these scenes out with too many unmarked people, we need to dial that down." And I know, I know, packing your background with diverse actors (race, gender, ability, etc) while you foreground two white, abled actors that were brought in specifically to be nostalgia bait is, like, on paper it's a bad look.

But they gave those backgrounders each a lot more charm and character in their writing than I was expecting. Everything from Sgt Singh's suspicion loosening to military obedience and Shirley saying "don't make me the problem just go" to Rose reframing her mother's tic into a statement of her own independent power.

(Yes I know Davies has a thing about how he writes moms but listen I'm going to let him have that one)

And fuuuuuuck meeeeee, but they just KEEP saying trans rights, even after The Star Beast ended.

I just really, really enjoyed all 3 so much.

*Child-friendly isn't the right term, but I've gotten through the whole post and I can't figure out better phrasing. What I mean is, under Moffat and Chibnall, Doctor Who was not for children. The show didn't go out of its way to exclude them, but it certainly didn't try to provide education, entertainment or even engagement for them.

Doctor Who is not "a kids show" but critically, it shouldn't be "an adult show" either. It functions at its best as a family show. Something you can watch with your parents and your kids both on the same couch, and everyone enjoy it. This is an absurdly difficult line to walk. It's why Disney had so many years of failure before the renaissance.

And one of the ways people fail to walk that line is by treating children as an afterthought (Chibnall), or not at all (Moffat). Meanwhile, Davies's previous stint as Showrunner did a phenomenal job of bringing up The Horrors in ways that would put adults on edge while letting Children also enjoy the ride.

And the same is true of these 3 episodes.

I think "can kids get really into it too" is an extremely important benchmark for this type of scifi (and, I think it's part of why many modern Star Trek properties are so fucking tedious).
