Our Lady of Sorrows – 5th Sorrow: At the Cross of Her Son

I found this hymn today. It is a part of the Liturgy of Our Lady of Sorrows. Being that it is her Feast Day I thought I would share it. It describes Virgin Mary standing at the cross of her Son weeping for him, in the hymn we implore her to allow us to join her in her sorrow. It is quite beautiful.

While she means so much more to me than I've yet been able to write, and may never be able to write, here is a part of what she means to me. Loyalty & Piety to her God, accepting a journey so important she accepted it knowing the grief it would cause, strength in the face of that grief. The 5th Sorrow is watching her son die, grief beyond words for any parent, and she stood there with strength.

#i have never been particularly a believer but my gradnparents on both sides were catholic #my grandma on my moms side used to take me to church and the church near her house was dedicated to our lady of sorrows #at first i was terrified of her #but eventually i realized how cool she was. openly crying with tears going down her face and the seven knives in her heart #she was pain itself. she was hurt and angry #thats why saurom's maryam resonates so much with me #it is the music dedicated to our lady of sorrows #to her love and her despair and her hurt and her anger

The warm November air was a stark difference to your normal bone-biting winds and thicker sweaters. A zip-up over your shirt was the only needed jacket to keep any possible shivers at bay.

The four of you stood outside the stone building. Students walk from the parking lot and through the open green doors. Heads and eyes turned and stared, small whispers could be heard with the flowing wind carrying their words.

“Come on. Gotta head to the office.” Your hands pressing into Will and El’s (who you have to start calling Jane now) shoulders to get their feet moving. Jonathan stayed by your side behind the two, his eyes squinting against the sunny sky.

The office wasn’t hard to find. Just a few feet inside and a quick turn to your right and it was easy going from there. They gave your schedules, Will and ‘Jane’ having almost the same schedule so they could stick together which you were thankful for. You only had one class with Jonathan and it was a woodshop class.

“Do I have to take woodshop? Nothing else open?” Hoping for something that didn’t require heavy tools. The office lady just shook her head with a bored expression.

“Now I’ll have someone take all of you to your respective classes. It’s an outdoor school so different subjects are in different buildings.” And that was all she said before two other women walked over and separated our group.

El and Will looked at you and Jonathan with anxiety spiking their eyes. “We’ll meet at lunch. It’ll be okay.” Giving them encouraging words for a parting gift.

Your guide led you and Jonathan out of the main building and into the courtyard before heading to a new building. A few doors down she opened the door which allowed for the loud noise of saws, hammers, and other woodworking noises to enter the hallway. She talked to the teacher and introduced the both of us to Mr. Harris.

“Which ones older?” Was his first question out his mouth. You both shared a quick look before Jonathan pointed at himself. “Okay, you’re Byers one and she’s Byers two. Easier than first names.” You scrunch your brows at the logic.

Mr. Harris looked around the small room before pointing at a table with one kid in colorful clothing and long hair. “Eh, both of you just sit with Argyle.”

“That’s his last name?” A slip of your tongue. Mr. Harris just huffed a laugh, “No, can’t pronounce his last name. Still weird to be named Argyle, but I don’t judge.” He definitely judged secretly.

The two of you left the man behind and walked up to the sandy square table. The boy had his head down before looking up and sending the both of you a wide smile. “Ah, friends! Welcome, Welcome. This is Argyle Island, I’m the owner of Argyle.”

Jonathan dropped his bag to the floor and then sat on his stool. You held yours in your lap with tapping feet on the floor. “I’m Jonathan and this is my sister, (Y/n).” Jonathan makes quick introductions as you observe the space.

“Cool, amigo. Wished I had siblings, be super dope.”

“Oh, it’s not. Trust me, I wish I was an only sibling. Or at least it was just my younger siblings, he’s a pain in the ass.” Poking mindless fun at Jonathan who just rolled his eyes and deeply sighed.

im terrible at ranking so ill turn to opinions hmmmm

My favorite mcr album changed by day hour minute but i think i wanna talk about.....bullets....yeah bc bullets is so insane as just a sheer proof of concept, like an expression of raw skill and talent that was growing within this band. Rays guitar work alone was enough for it to make complete sense for major labels to be knocking at the bands door begging to suck them off and then they also had GERARD!!! And this was even before mikey really could write bass parts and frank was still not really in the band like its just ray gerard and geoff (and otter who wrote drum parts that r cool but also somehow out of his skill range? girl you MADE THEM). The fact that vampires not onky exists but was like the second or third song written? Like before mcr gerard either never wrote music or wrote shitty three chord throwaway punk that existed as an excuse to print band stickers and arent even good enough to save on tape and then you decide to start writing for real to cope with major national level trauma and your first song is SKYLINES??? and youre next songs are VAMPIRES and OUR LADY OF SORROWS???? and oh my god the vocals gerard gives on the albuk as a completely untrained vocalist who did one musical once in middle school and otherwise never sang professionally unless you count crazy kids song in breakfast monkey. and then you hear the vocals on fucking vampires???? Like gerard doesnt exactly sing like celine dion on bullets but the raw harmony work and ability to PERFORM and really stretch the emotions of a song and do whatever strange or vulnerable thing is needed to sell the track. Theres still few songs more affecting than early sunsets. Like i fully think gerard is probably the strongest vocalist in the emo scene just because of their ability to completely and utterly sell you on the songs emotions (not just anyone can sing im not okay and get away with it) and thats before all the developing technical talents both already present like how gerard can just toss a melody onto a track without thinking about it or the fact gerard did a lot of the base writing for mcr while fucking barely knowing guitar how did that even work girl. Like i havent even mentioned the lyrics??? How do you. Like you can tell both that gerard never learned how to write songs and also that gerard listens to so much music that he can just fake it anywayyheres like 2 songs with actual choruses on the album and neither of them are the self proclaimed pop song h4h which opens with a queen riff?????? ans then is like a hardcore version of a beatles pop song????dont talk to me about drowning lessons. deomolition lovers!?!?! half of these songs are just poems that gerard hammered into songs and theyre so like. genuinely so incredible and they work??like the album works! as a cohesive piece! it coheres!

and thats the first album. Id say my favorite ts album is probably evermore though i might actually have less to say on it just bc i havent had it since 2015. Evermore is just so....ANGSTY!!! it feels like a complete fulfillment of what she was exploring on folklore with the fictional framing devices and keeping the songs clearly personal while also removing herself in a way she never really has before. It feels like a level of introspection through art that taylor has always been both pushing towards and shying away from because too much introspection or strangeness or even pulling away from the diaristic idea too much never worked with where taylor was at with her career. Evermore had a new collaborator, and the massive success of folklore as well as the continued quarantine gave her both an unprescedented level of artistic isolation personal confidence and professional security that allowed her to just go "fuck it" and write fucking. cowboy like me and dorothea and coney island and closure and she GOT AWAY WITH IT!!! like the albums been out for 3 years or something like that and I still feel like i havent fully processed its existence despite listening to it constantly. It truly felt like she was unshacked and was able to write about herself while also completely pulling away from any sort of literal Truth and going crazy with concept and the way she writes feels so unconstrained from the rules she would sometimes set for herself, it felt like a natural evolution from the freedom she felt jumping into the lover era but its past the honeymoon phase and like it is pop music but its also not scared to be...not pop music if that makes sense? She really fully settles into folk as a genre for the first time and it lets her writing flourish. Songs with no choruses songs with barely any structure at all lyrics that stretch at the ends of verses and fun bouncy wordplay and just allowing herself into a characters life and seeing how it fits her. She has some straight up ren faire tracks on here liek willow is just a collection of similies and metaphors she likes smushed together over a lute and its so GOOD. It feels like she was allowed to really live in adulthood as a woman in her early thirties who creates art because she loves it and because it keeps her alive ALSO proof that she needs to keep collaborating w new ppl bc whenever she does you can feel her pushing herself harder and she becomes so willing to try these new kind of weird things that she may have never tried otherwise aughhhh!!!! i didnt even talk about coney island!!!! I love how moody and dour the whole project is it feels like November where fall drags you into a cold unforgiving winter and you're just trying to survive with your sanity and any of your personal relationships intact. its so!!! tbh its SO new england also which makes me biased. ok thats all

(Also known as "No, I was not there, but I already make these recaps for my friends so why not post them here too". Warning that these are just the parts that I found most interesting, not necessarily a full summary of the shows)

Description:

A version of Michaelangelo's Pieta in which Cheerleader-Dress Gerard is in the place of Mary, holding Parade-Jacket Gerard in place of Jesus. In the background there are dimly lit outdoor blachers.

Statement:

Michaelangelo is a son of a bitch and the original pose is way more complicated than I imagined when I decided to do this piece.

Traditionally the Pieta symbolizes both grief and hope. The Saviour is dead, but he had to die. Mary mourns her son, but she knew it had to be this way. It was fated, his death saves us all. So the story goes. Gerard is done being a martyr, the old MCR is dead and thats indescribably for the best! It's been so transformative to see them all together again, healthy and happy and performing on their own terms. Especially with Gerard, it's so hopeful to see someone you've looked up to for so long make it through the other side.

So I bought a 7 Sorrows Chaplet. I was extremely hesitant to buy the one I wanted due to this:

I abhor missionary work. Like genuinely loath it. I actively avoided using ethnologue as a source because of how much I hate it. Nor would I ever donate to Samaritan's Purse or Salvation Army. But I was pleasantly surprised to find this:

"nor use aid to induce a person to change religion" thats what I needed to hear, in order to feel comfortable buying the chaplet. Hopefully they are true to their word— I would hope Christians would be.

"seek for our work to be our testimony" <- thats the proper way to 'evangelize' in my opinion. Show the love of Jesus Christ, let people see that you are doing amazing work because of him, and if they want to ask you about it then you can say "I do this because my Christian values teach me so." If the person wants to know more so be it, if they don't want to know more respect it. This is how I wanted to evangelize when I was a Christian but my church shamed me for it not being rigorous enough, I wasn't actively spreading the Good News, I wasn't fulfilling The Great Commission. Ugh.

Anyways, its nice to know part of my purchase went to an aid program that I hope is honest and helpful.

I basically just held my breath and jumped in the deep end of the pool with Our Lady of Sorrows veneration by this purchase .... without any idea how to swim. I'm hoping the chaplet will be a physical reminder and give me a reason to actually start instead of just thinking about it.

Danger Days has a special place in my heart too, the lore behind it is just so good to get lost into (it reminds me a lot of the untouchable gang, but like. A LOT!! Song recs: Bulletproof heart, DESTROYA, Summertime)

Anddddd I don't know if you're ready for this lmao but you should check out Frank Iero's solo project Stomachaches, that album also sounds like a mental breakdown. It reminds me of 58 and Generation Swine in a weird way (please listen to it and tell me I'm not the only one shshhdhdj)

i actually checked out stomachaches before others because your description made me curious and. yeah. it's a hot mess 😂 it has its charm tho.
